LONG-RANGE MISSILE
Purpose: To destroy or deliver chemical agents to land-based targets.
How it works: In 1991, U.S. investigators learned that Iraq was seeking the capability of launching such missiles as far as 3,000 kilometers -- the distance between Baghdad and Paris. Possible targets of such a missile include Rome, Moscow, Karachi, Pakistan, Cairo. The United States is out of range.
Secondary use: Inspectors also learned that Iraq had warheads containing the biological weapon anthrax, and that it was prepared to use them.
