There is at least one "declared" Presidential Palace at Mosul, as well as regional headquarters for a string of factories stretching down Route 1 and the key railroad lines to Baghdad. The Al Kindl and Jaber bin Hayan factories manufactured chemicals used in purifying uranium ore, while the Al Jazirah factory at Skarkat, south of Mosul, produced chemical weapons.

The allies heavily bombed Al Jazirah during the 1991 war. Other chemical manufacturing continues along the Mosul / Baghdad corridor under the general oversight of UNSCOM arms inspectors.
