Al Qaim refined raw uranium ore into "yellowcake," used as a precursor for atomic reactors or nuclear weapons, according to UNSCOM inspectors. Iraq mined its own ore at the Akashat mine and imported uranium ore from abroad. Iraq has said that all yellowcake uranium used in its atomic programs came from the Al Qaim refinery; UNSCOM has said that it regards that claim as unproven.
