This military air base and its associated radar and communication facilities were built near an important pumping center on oil pipelines, running from Iraq's northern oil fields through Syria to ports on the Mediterranean Sea. It became an important target for U.S. F-117 "Stealth" fighter attacks in the opening days of the 1991 war, according to military analysts. The U.S. conducted some 47 raids, effectively closing the H-2 military air base for the duration of the war. Nevertheless, air fields and communication links can be restored if the targeted country retains access to world markets.
