This military air base is one of three airfields built along Iraq'a most important oil pipelines. They are positioned to launch attacks on Israel by way of Syria or Jordan, or to defend Iraq from Israeli raids, such as the 1981 attack that destroyed Iraq's atomic reactor at Osiraq.
