Presidential
Palaces
at Tikrit

Iraq's decision to bar access by UNSCOM weapons inspectors to three Presidential Palaces at Tikrit spurred the February 1998 showdown between the United States and Iraq.

Tikrit is also Saddam Hussein's hometown, and a center of power for the family networks crucial to his government.

Iraqi opposition sources report that the Salahudin General Establishment near Tikrit manufactured mechanical parts used in chemical and biological warfare engineering.
