Map The Nuclear Balance in Asia
With the recent tests by India and Pakistan, many observers believe that the world's greatest potential for nuclear conflict now lies in South Asia.
Source: Carnegie Endowment for International Peace *Note: Despite the recent tests by both India and Pakistan, the two countries are not technically recognized as "declared nuclear powers" under the 1968 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), hence the designation as "self-declared" powers. "Declared nuclear powers" are those who have agreed to the terms and obligations of the treaty. © Copyright 1998 The Washington Post Company
