Mother Teresa in Baltimore

From News Services and Staff Reports
Thursday, May 30 1996; Page B07

About 1,000 people crowded into Baltimore's Basilica of the Assumption yesterday for a glimpse of Mother Teresa and to hear Cardinal William Keeler give a special Mass at which 35 Missionaries of Charity nuns renewed their vows.

Mother Teresa, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 for her work with the poor, swayed slightly as she stood before the nuns, listening to each one renew her vows to the religious community Mother Teresa founded 25 years ago in Calcutta.

But when the 85-year-old Catholic nun spoke to the congregation, her voice was strong and unfaltering. She asked the families of Baltimore to pray for the nuns of the Missionaries of Charity and "give us some of your daughters" so they can continue to serve the poor.

Mother Teresa also stopped by the Gift of Hope, a hospice for people with AIDS that she dedicated during her last visit to Baltimore in 1992.
