Got Plans?
With the Entertainment Guide Staff
washingtonpost.com

Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003; 1 p.m. ET

Every Thursday at 1 p.m. ET, washingtonpost.com's Entertainment Guide experts share their best bets for local flavor, great dates and family fun. Got plans? Great. Need plans? Just ask. We have the skinny on the bars and clubs, concerts, kitchens, theaters and special events that keep life interesting. We're going out gurus, and we're at your service.

Of course, we're happy to answer questions about local entertainment, but we need to hear from you, too. Introduce us to the coolest DJ or the fastest bartender you've encountered. Sound off on the week's best concert or the city's best burger. Tell us about the best place to amuse little kids or a big art fan. Together we can plan fun ways to spend weekdays, weekends, dates and holidays. The pleasure is ours, and yours.

Each week a different guru will act as host or hostess, but the entire staff is at your service. If you're looking for more ideas, see the Entertainment Guide.

Submit your questions and comments before or during the discussion.

The transcript follows.

The Going Out Gurus: Welcome to the chat. We're having slight difficulties on our end, but we're all here: Maura, Kate, Alexa, Joe, Rhome, Jen and me (Fritz). So fire away, but please be as specific as possible with those questions, okay? Help us help you.

The chat might wobble but it won't fall down...

Alexandria, VA: Going to the Caps game Saturday night. Friends want to go to District Chophouse beforehand because they think it's "nice". I thought it was a brewpub. None of us have ever been.

Who's right here?

The Going Out Gurus: You both are. It's a very upscale, classy steakhouse that happens to brew its own beer upstairs. The Brewer's Lounge (upstairs) is more laid back than the Art Deco dining area. -- Fritz

Washington, DC: Am looking for a good place to see live acoustic/rock music in DC on Saturday night - bands or solos. Have already tried 930 and Black Cat, but nothing appealing. Iota is the last resort, as it's a little too far to drive. Any suggestions?

The Going Out Gurus: Hello DC, this is Joe and I have to say it is sort of a grim weekend for live music in DC. Nothing looks too appealing. But you might try the Velvet Lounge if you've never been there. Or Madam's Organ in Adams Morgan for blues on Saturday. As far as Iota goes, it is only a three minute drive from Georgetown, so it's really not that far away.

Washington DC : hey going out all stars,
i need to think of a happy hour choice in AM. how's reef early on? someplace fun, i need to break my rut on the kung fu knee of your experience.

The Going Out Gurus: Kind of empty, Washington. Too be honest, while I like the price break ($1 off everything), I find it sleepy at times. It was better during the summer, when the roof got hopping early on. Rendezvous is good for $2 beers, although it's also slow to pick up. If you want a crwod, head for Rocky's, which has food and drink specials. -- Fritz

New movie theatres around 10th and E, N.W.: I heard several years ago that new movie theatres were planned around 10th and E.

Was that plan scrapped? Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: I (Jen) remember hearing that, too, but never heard anything further. I think (and could be wrong) that the arrival of the Loews Georgetown theater took the place of whatever was planned at 10th and E. If anyone else knows something more about this, please give a shout out.

College Park, Md.: Already thinking about Valentine's Day (about 5 weeks away). What cool ideas do you have for a couple in their early twenties? Either places to eat or things to do. Would like to spend under $100 for the evening.

The Going Out Gurus: College Park. Whooaa horsey. Five weeks is a long time. We've only just taken Fritz down off the tree. I've heard Valentine plans from one restaurant so far. Why not start thinking about the fabulous meal you could cook at home for $100 bucks, or take a cooking lesson together? -- Alexa

Bowie, Md.: Hi Gurus-
A bunch of us are heading to Cafe Citron tomorrow nite after dinner for some drinks and dancing. The Post's review says there is a late nite happy hour. What's the scene like?

The Going Out Gurus: Bowie, Cafe Citron will likely be packed tomorrow night, but there won't be any late-night happy hour, I'm afraid. That's only Monday through Wednesday. Don't worry, you'll still have fun. -- Maura

Springfield, Va.: If you had to pick a D.C. restaurant with great atmosphere (for me, that's a place that's funky yet intimate) where you could linger for an enjoyable meal, what would you pick? Let's stay at $20 entree or less.

The Going Out Gurus: I think we need a little clarification on "funky," Springfield.

Bethesda, Md: Places in Virginia where the police won't bust you for having a couple of beers?

The Going Out Gurus: Anywhere but Fairfax County.

Washington, D.C.: I have a friend coming to visit from the deep south. Where should I take him to make him feel the most comfortable? Needless to say, he's not interested in the hippest places.

The Going Out Gurus: Actually, need more to say, not less. Are you looking for a restaurant, a club, a bar? What kind of things does he like? That would help us give you a better answer. I'm just guessing here -- you want to show off your city, but don't want to make him stand in line to get in somewhere with a dress code, maybe? How about a table at Carpool, or beer and a show at Iota. I'm not saying these are unhip, just that they're comfortable. If those won't work, write back. -- Anne

Bethesda, MD: Hey Gurus,

Does anyone know what the next movie that will be playing at the Uptown be (and when)?

The Going Out Gurus: Oh, you impatient kids. I (Jen) just called the Uptown and the lady I spoke with did not know. I'm guessing they'll ride "The Two Towers" train for a while (and rightly so). Don't expect anything new for another few weeks.

Silver Spring MD: Erykah Badu is playing a show at Dream at end of Jan. and the tickets are selling for $10 on ticketmaster, my question is do you have to pay the admission fee to get into Dream on top of the ticket price?
Thanks- love the chats..

The Going Out Gurus: That's actually not a dumb question, "you know how it get in the club" (c) Beanie Siegel. Anyway, breathe easy, your Ticketmaster ticket will get you in without additional inflation at the door. - Rhome

Alexandria, Va.: Brrrr. I hate January. Gurus and Others: My friends and I have decided to start a book club, has anyone read anything good lately?

Also, my favorite drink in the world is the dirty martini. Where can I get the best one?

The Going Out Gurus: For dirti martinis: In your neck of the woods, try Morrison House. Otherwise, try Black Cat, Aroma and McCormick and Schmicks says Fritz.

And books, well the gurus do pick one up once in a while: Kate says "Eva Moves the Furniture" made her cry and she's a toughie. Janet liked Donna Tartt's "Little Friend" and "Spies" by Michael Frayn. Alexa, the sick-o, is enjoying some "Complications" by Atul Gawande while Rhome finished James Baldwin's "Nobody Knows My Name" (after he reread his Tolkien books). Joe calls for -- and I heartily second -- Ian McEwan's "Atonement." -- Maura

Fairfax, VA: What is the scene like at Dragonfly. I am heading there tonight with some friends, and wanted to know what to expect. Loungy is what I am guessing...is there a dance floor, DJ, and can I wear jeans (the nice new "trendy" kind)?

The Going Out Gurus: You guessed well, Fairfax. DJs (house), not a lot of room to dance, decent sushi (not great) and I'm not sure I'd rock the jeans at Dragonfly, although if you're female, you can probably get away with it. (I've worn jeans, but it was for the Tuesday night drum'n'bass event, which is less strict than the weekend.) -- Fritz

U Street NW: The 10th and E location was abandoned. It was going to be built by Landmark Theatres, but that company went through bankruptcy. But they did end up building a theatre in Bethesda instead. By the way, I love the new Georgetown theatre. I used to see most of my movies in Dupont Circle, but the Georgetown theatre is so much better.

The Going Out Gurus: That's what it was -- Landmark up and moved to Bethesda. Thanks for refreshing my fuzzy memory. I (Jen) also like the Loews Georgetown, thought it would be nice if Loews wouldn't continue to close movie theaters around here. (See upcoming posting for details...)

Dupont Circle, Washington, D.C.: This is more of a pre-going out question, but perhaps the squeaky-clean GOGs can help:
I live in D.C. and drive a car. I like to keep my car clean, particularly after a nasty D.C. snowstorm. I do not like to pay $18+ to have it washed by one of those Wash-n-go places that do a mediocre job at best. I'm looking for a good old do-it-yourself carwash, the kind where you put in $1.50 in quarters and have 5 minutes worth of high-powered spray. SURELY one of these exists in the District (I refuse to drive to the suburbs to wash my car).

Any suggestions?

The Going Out Gurus: That big intersection of New York and West Virginia avenues has a couple giant gas stations with clean-your-own carwashes, I think. They have lots of space to spread out. That's what jumps to my mind first. Other readers, any ideas?

Columbia Heights, DC: OK, not really a going out question, but I had to tell someone.

I just saw the compliment man on Ct. Avenue near Dupont Circle. It was the real deal.

Nice to have a bit of DC color back. Look for him in AdMo soon.

A nice surprise on a great day.

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks, Columbia Heights. I like your sexy shoes!

Washington DC: Am I crazy or was there a City Musuem (around China Town) which opened recently or is plan to open in Spring 2003? I swear I walked by it and/or the sign for the City Musuem. Everyone looks at me like they have no idea what I am talking about. I couldn't find it anywhere. Please let me know if anyone has a clue. Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: Can't vouch for your sanity, but yes, there will be a City Museum (formerly the Historical Society of Washington DC) in spring of 2003. It will be in the old Carnegie Library at Mt. Vernon Square, next to Chinatown. We plan to give you the best sneak peek we can, so stay tuned. -- Maura

Shaw, Washington, D.C.: My husband and I are looking for a sorta funky, artsy dinner theatre in the District. Any suggestions? Also, now that Dragonfly and 18th Street Lounge have been infiltrated with Northern Virginians (yes, I'm a city snob), what is your pick for a yet undiscovered, laid back place to grab a drink and hear some good music, live or otherwise. Thanks gurus!!

The Going Out Gurus: Hey Shaw, you know better than to string "funky" and "dinner theater" together? I'm not sure that exists. Anywhere. Period. There is plenty of great local theater and it sounds like you and your husband are up for exploring beyond Arena, etc. Read Jen's round up of monthly highlights. What about "Shakespeare's Villains" at Studio or I saw "MacHomer" last year and it's flat out great. I'm intrigued by "The Unexpected Man" and hope to check it out this weekend.

Have you been to Signal 66? Not theater per say but a cavalcade of people make it something to see, not to mention the art on the walls. There's an opening on Friday. As for undiscovered, what about something that may be new to you: like HR-57 or a DJ night like Filler? -- Kate

Arlington, Va.: Any word on if anything will happen with the Pentagon City theatres and if any other theatres are going to open in the D.C. area in the next year or two?

The Going Out Gurus: Not sure what's going on with Pentagon City theaters, other than they seem to be closed for good. If they reopen, I (Jen) would imagine another chain besides Loews would have to step in to pick up the pieces. As far as other theaters, hopefully the Avalon will be reopening sometime this year. And the AFI's Silver Theater in Silver Spring is slated to open this year, too. Also just heard that AMC is opening another big 'ol multiplex in Columbia, which isn't quite D.C. but it's not too, too far. So plenty of stuff is happening.

Silver Spring, Md.: Are you familiar with any good restaurants that serve as a nice compromise for couples with and without children (that is, a place where a childless couple doesn't have to sacrifice all taste/quality to spend time with friends with kids, but where the kids can be kids)?

The Going Out Gurus: Silver Spring, there's a place in Falls Church called the Broad Street Grill where I think all the kids sit at one table and are kept amused. It might be only one night a week (Wednesday?). This is a tricky one especially in winter when outdoor options are out. I'd say 2 Amys always seems to have a good mix of adults and kids and seems to have a less uptight, more European attitude towards the young folk. -- Alexa

Rockville, Maryland: Saw last week's post about recommendations for dining/drinking near MCI Center. Any of those places vegetarian friendly? Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: First choice: Zaytinya. It's new, glamorous and has a long page of vegetarian tapas choices. Jaleo and Austin Grill (veggie burritos) are other good veg options. Note: few of these take reservations after 5-6, so if there's an event at MCI, come early or plan to wait a long time. -- Anne

Newbie in Va.: Hey Gurus,
Just wanted to ask what the dress code is like at Home. I thought I heard it's not too strict; like you can wear nice jeans and stuff.
Thanks for the info.

The Going Out Gurus: Yes. You can wear "neat" jeans, but leave the boots, sneakers and athletic wear at your own home, okay? -- Fritz

Poor in Washington, D.C.: Do you have suggestions for activities besides mueseums to do without spending any money? We've already seen the mounuments and all of that.

The Going Out Gurus: Indeedy. Here's my new baby: the Deals, Specials and Free Stuff page. I hope to grow it this year, make it big and strong and cheap, so help me out. Drop me a line (kate.gibbs@washingtonpost.com) and tell me what you're looking for. -- Kate

Arlington, VA: Re: "funky but intimate" - c'mon, I don't believe for a second that none of you Gurus could work with this one. Unfortunately I can't think of many places that fit both categories. Funky, yes: Luna Grill & Diner on Connecticut, maybe Cafe Luna and Skewers on P St., Spices (funky chopsticks, no?), Iota and Lost Dog Cafe in Arlington. But of those places, only maybe the P St. ones or Iota would be a nice place to linger. I look forward to seeing someone else's better answers.

The Going Out Gurus: I look forward to calling you Smarty Pants.

Roller Rinks?: Dear Gurus: Please help! I have the urge to relive my preteen years of roller skating under flashing lights to tunes like Centerfold and Gloria. Is there anywhere in the DC metro area where a 30-something gal could find such an experience? I'll even settle for contemporary music instead of the classics of the 80s! Thank you!

The Going Out Gurus: God bless you, roller rinks. I (Jen) have also experienced the roller boogie blues, but there is a cure (and it doesn't have to involve watching the movie "Xanadu," though I certainly encourage that). Take a look at this story I wrote about roller-skating. Scroll to the bottom, and you'll see a listing of roller rinks that should suit your needs. You may want to call these places just to double check their hours, etc. because I wrote this story a year ago and things may have changed. But I'm pretty sure the Rockville Skate Center still does an adult skate night complete with '70s and '80s music. And if skating to "Word Up" doesn't satisfy you, I don't know what will.

Metro Center: Hey Gurus! Have you guys heard of that club, Home? Have any of you been there yet? I didn't find a review in the Entertainment section, so just checking to see what your impressions are.

Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: There's a short writeup on the site, MC, but my longer report is in tomorrow's Weekend section. I like it - the two-and-a-half floors that everyone can get to, any - a good mix of a lounge and a dance club, and much more intimate than Platinum or VIP. I really liked the cozy Skynear couches in the main room, and the warren-like basement. You might want to check it out tonight - ladies are free all night and Moet is $6 per glass. -- Fritz

Washington,DC: Want to plan a group birthday dinner next weekend for my boyfriend. He is from New York originally and likes seafood, etc... Was thinking of Oceanaire?? Also, the place has to be good for groups? Any suggestions? Thank you!

The Going Out Gurus: Oh yes, Washington, that's a great place to go for a birthday. Fine for groups, feels splashy, fun. Push the old boat out. -- Alexa

Resist generalizations!: Hi,
Didn't we already have the New Year's Resolution to avoid bashing "Northern Virginians" and the like? It's only January 9 - are we over the goodwill already? I for one am sick of it.
- Faithful reader from a close-in 'burb

The Going Out Gurus: There was good will to begin with?

Just kidding. Play nice, people.

Moving to Courthouse: looks like a great area, any definate places to become a regular? other than dremos, 4 coursts, and the bagel shop, thats all i'm familar with. (gua rapo was ok)

does summers show nhl hockey games?

The Going Out Gurus: We gurus hang at Courthouse in the daylight hours -- when we have to -- so we'll do our best to help. A few of us, but not Joe, just enjoyed a delicious lunch from Sawatdee. You could also try the Village Bistro, Ray's the Steaks or Singh Thai. The Saturday farmer's market and antiques market may merit regular visits. Greenberry Coffee & Tea seems pretty tasty. Oh, and yes, we believe that Summers does show NHL hockey. -- Maura

Re Shaw:: For the record, I'm offended by the suggestion that VA residents are somehow less hip than Washingtonians when they go to nice places in the district.

The Going Out Gurus: Yeah. I was born and raised in P.G. County, and I like to think that makes me more hip than folks who grew up in Capitol Hood - I mean, on Capitol Hill. -- Fritz

Washington, D.C.: I have a friend who has an independent film he'd like to show here in DC. I checked with Arlington Cinema and Drafthouse (which would be ideal) but it was way too expensive to rent out. Do you know of any other places in DC where we could pull something like this off? We're looking for a place that can accomodate around 200 people and that is possibly near bars where we can have an afterparty. Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: Give Visions a try. They definitely do rentals, and their rates may be more reasonable. If you're willing to travel outside of the city, there's the Sterling Cinema and Drafthouse, which I believe can also handle private parties. -- Jen

Do-it-Yourself Car Wash: There's a self-serve car wash just off of Logan Circle, on Rhode Island at 10th or 11th Streets, NW.

The Going Out Gurus: Much closer to Dupont. Thanks, DIY.

Washington, DC: Has there been any word from the VIP Club since the disaster of a New Year's Eve??

The washpost comment section has got a ton of comments. Everyone is true, I was there.

The Going Out Gurus: No official statement or that sort of thing, but it's certainly cost them customers, and, while this might not be related, some of the folks who helped promote VIP Fridays - as well as the New Year's Eve fiasco - just went to another club.

For those who are curious, read the (admittedly bias) user reviews on the VIP Club's page.

Dupont: The new Georgetown theater's got comfy seats and all, but what up with the prices? Holy mackerel! The matinee price is only for the first show of the day, after which it's NINE smackers, not counting parking! (Yes, a movie at 1:00pm was nine dollars.)

I'd frankly prefer to spend a reasonable amount of money at the theaters with the profoundly uncomfortable seats and small screens (but neat movie offerings) that keep getting shut down.

The Going Out Gurus: Ooh, I (Jen) didn't know they only do the matinee discount for the first show of the day. That's a sneaky new trick some theaters are playing -- Landmark in Bethesda does the same thing. I think D.C. should have both options: older theaters with cheap prices, and nice, state-of-the-art cinemas that may be a bit pricier. That way people have a choice. In the city proper, there haven't been very many theater choices period, and I think that stinks. I hope that changes.

Fairfax, Va.: Hello! I'm hoping you can help! Where can a group of 30-something women, married (read: not looking to hook up), full time moms (read: we need to let off some steam) go for drinks and dancing where we can act like idiots on the dance floor, but we won't be the oldest ones there? We're going this Saturday night, if that makes a difference.

Please, you are our only hope! Sadly, we're clueless! THANKS!

The Going Out Gurus: Fairfax, if you're really looking to dance you can try eCiti or Polly Esthers. It goes against every fiber of my being to recommend the latter to anyone, but Fritz says if you want to act like an idiot, it's the place to be. Hope you have fun. -- Maura

Arlington, Va.: What do you all know about The Big Flea in Chantilly this weekend? Will I really be able to find some good flea market "finds" or is it going to be full of overpriced junk that really isn't worth the trip?
Thanks in advance!

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Arlington,

Janet here. I have to confess that I personally haven't been to one of these. However, I have heard good things, and in the case of flea markets like this, you just never know until you go.

Good hunting and gathering!!

georgetown, dc: some friends and i would love to hear some good jazz sat. night and would preferably like to stay in the district although somewhere in arlington isn't out of reach. we have an under 21 year old and not a lot of cash. any suggestions??

also, shameless plug here, but i ate at "flat top" in ballston for the first time the other night and it was AMAZING! great food (especially if you're a veggie) and a fun, interactive eating experience. plus, the service was terrific, especially the bartender.

okay, thanks for any advice you have for me re: jazz, gurus!

The Going Out Gurus: hello Georgetown, this is Joe. Why don't you try HR-57 on 14th Street. Not sure about their under-21 policy, but it is cheap and laid back.

Potomac, Md.: In response to the comments last week about the overabundance of commercials and previews before movies –- I would like to recommend Kentlands Stadium 8 in Gaithersburg. They never show ads and they show just one preview per film. In addition, they always start the films on time, the crowds are usually well behaved, and it’s clean. I will go out of my way to see a movie at Kentlands. It is a bit of a trip from the city, but in my opinion it’s well worth it to only have to sit through one preview.

The Going Out Gurus: I (Jen) also like the Kentlands theater. It has an old-timey feel (at least as far as the exterior goes) and it's one of the few theaters around that's run by a local, independent company. It has gotten a little worn for wear since it opened a few years back, but I still think it's a decent place. Thanks for the two cents, Potomac.

Love them Djs in DC: Hi all, Was wondering if you knew much about Confusion (at Black Cat). Would like to try it this weekend but wasn't sure about the music or crowd. When does it get happening and do people dance (and is the music dance-y)? Thanks!
Brie

The Going Out Gurus: Full disclosure: I guest DJed at Confusion last month, although unbilled.

Now, I can tell you that yes, people dance at Confusion (although not 'til later in the night), and the music is a mix of old '80s, synthpop, Britpop, garage, funk and what have you. It kind be kind of chaotic, but you'll certainly find a reason to move your hips. -- Fritz

DC: Why list your names? As if anyone cares.

The Going Out Gurus: Aw, that makes us feel bad. Doesn't anyone care.

Baltimore, MD: My boyfriend and I want a good, fun, relaxing roadtrip for next weekend. Maybe something outdoors. We could leave Friday morning and do not need to be back until Monday afternoon. Ideas please.

The Going Out Gurus: Wow, you have lots of time. Have you looked at the Escapes column? Skim the headlines and see if anything grabs your fancy. Or, if you have a particular state that you want to visit, you can search that way too. This time of year, maybe you want a ski trip? Myself, I'd go as far south (read: warm) as possible. -- Anne

DC Improv?: What is the deal w/ attending a show at the DC Improv? Do you have to eat there at the 8 p.m. shows? Thanks

The Going Out Gurus: Unless something has changed, no, you don't have to eat there. (This is America, man. We don't HAVE to do anything.) If you pay for tickets to the show, you've fulfilled your monetary obligation. -- Jen

DC Transplant from GA: "Needless to say, he's not interested in the hippest places."

Holy freakin' stereotypes Batman!

The Going Out Gurus: I know. I was gonna recommend Cooter's Place. Maybe they're into the Dukes of Hazzard? -- Fritz

Perpetual Single Girl-ville, DC: I'm always out and about (bars, sporting events, etc) and see lots of guys that I would like to approach. If I waited for them, I'd be an old maid-- oh wait I am, but a happy independant one.

Can you help me with a good warm-up line (other than "Hi, my name is") so I don't look like a dork or desparate?

The Going Out Gurus: I like this one, I heartily salute your take charge spirit. It sure takes the load off of us fellas who always have the Spectre of Potential Rejection breathing down our necks. But come on now, dudes always have the burden of coming up with a winning opener, do you think I can summarize the science in a neat package for you just because you've decided to cross over? As long as you don't say anything dreadfully ignorant, you don't have something hanging out of your nose, your breath doesn't stink and you just exude your normal confident, pleasant, sincere personality (I'm assuming you have one) you'll do fine breaking the ice with us. Lines are for fishing. - Rhome

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, Maura broke the chat. We'll fix it later this afternoon.

Mt Pleasant's gotta know what to eat: Will any of you guys be taking advantage of restaurant week? And if so, where? I've never been to any of the participating ooh la la places and am willing to try anything, but of course I want it to be wallet-worthwhile.

P.S. In yesterday's dining chat, someone asked Sietsema which places would offer the best bangs for the buck, but of course he avoided answering in kind of a flippant way. I trust that you might have more concrete suggestions....?

The Going Out Gurus: Mt. Pleasant, If I were you, I'd go somewhere new and ritzy. My guess is that these places might be trying harder than others to pull new people in. Just a theory. So in that vein, I might go to Zola or Poste or 15 ria or Firefly. Otherwise, I'd head to Neyla, Equinox, Bistro Bis... -- Alexa

Funky Yet Intimate: Little Fountain Cafe! That place is a gem - cozy and unique atmosphere, great food, and reasonable prices.

The Going Out Gurus: All that and more!

Re: Names: I care! I like to see who the advice is coming from. This person wants you to pretend like you are one big "voice" with no differing opinions. Anyway, I LIKE seeing the names.

The Going Out Gurus: See someone cares! Thanks. Plus, you're sure to get differing opinions because we can't stand one another.

Arlington, Va.: Hello --

I've heard that Andre Chreky is doing his annual Salon-a-thon January 18-19, but before I call for an appointment I wondered if you guys could fill me in on the drill -- first, do I have any shot of getting a slot so late in the game, and more importantly. are the prices the same as normal or do people pay more (since there are "celebrity" stylists)? I'm willing to pay a little extra since it's for charity, but I don't know what's "expected" and don't want to be caught short (I generally have more of a "Bubbles" budget).

The Going Out Gurus: Hi Arlington, the Salon-A-Thon is indeed a 24-hour event and there are celebrity stylists coming from NYC spots like Bumble & Bumble. Call now and book your slot -- I like the idea of getting my hair cut at 10 p.m. (as long as I tape "The Osbournes").

During the Salon-A-Thon, all services are available (cutting, waxing, coloring, pedicuring, etc.). Salon prices are the same ($40-$60 for a cut; $75 with Andre himself; "celebs" are more) and all the proceeds from the services and the silent auction go to Children's Hospital. In fact the Salon perfers you bring your check book on the 18-19th so you make out the amount directly to Children's Hospital. Cool, no? -- Kate

Rollerskating and Courthouse : Ahem, I think "Funkytown" is the ultimate rollerskating song (but only if you have a giant purple comb sticking out of the back pocket of your dark wash Gloria Vanderbilt jeans).

I lived in the Courthouse neighborhood for three years before buying a house. Lots of great cheap places to become a regular:
Galaxy Hut
Faccia Luna
Hard Times
Little Viet Garden
Queen Bee
Joseph's
IOTA
Circo
Guajillo when the service is good
and of course, Pines of Florence for cheap red-sauce Italian food.

In fact I was driving through the hood yesterday, and it looked like the Rhodeside Grill was boarded up. Any scoop?

The Going Out Gurus: True, true, true. And you have us for neighbors!

Washington, DC: Georgetown theatre: Apparently the employees of that theatre don't know that the matinee price is only for the first show on weekends either. Because I was there last Saturday for the 2nd show and they charged me the matinee price.

The Going Out Gurus: Hmmm, this is interesting. I (Jen) also just checked fandango, and they are charging matinee prices for any show before 6. So maybe our angry friend was overcharged. If so, I suggest, he or she search for that ticket stub and try to get a refund. In the meantime, I'll look into this and see if I can figure out what the story is. I'll have an answer soon, certainly in time for next week's "Got Plans?"

Falls Church, VA: Hi Gurus! Great chat! (Although, Lay off the No. VA bashing, people.)

Anybody have suggestions for a place that is fun, cheap, and in Northern Virginia? Is there any such place? Decent food wouldn't hurt either.

The Going Out Gurus: Hey Falls Church, how about Whiteys. I was just there the other night for the first time in years and I forgot what a good, divey place it is. Country music on the jukebox. Cheap beer. And I had a great sandwich to boot. - Joe

Downtown DC: Some friends and I were planning on going out dancing at dream tomorrow night, and heard that Usher is performing there. Is this true? I hope not...

The Going Out Gurus: Yes. Upstairs. You might want to skip it if you can't stand sappy R&B vocals.

Washington, D.C.: Any word on the new Melting Pot in DC? Is it open yet?

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, it's open. And it's an enormous amount of food. -- Alexa

Arlington, Va.: Just met a great guy and although we've been out a few times, it's been as part of a group every time. Where can we go to get better acquainted one-on-one? We both like live music and food.

The Going Out Gurus: Any table for two ensures that you'll have time to talk and learn more about him. Use our restaurants or music events search to find a cuisine/concert that appeals to both of you. If that goes well, try ice-skating, where the slick surface could sweep you off your feet and into each other's arms. The outdoor rink at the Sculpture Garden or, nearer you, at Pentagon Row might do the trick. -- Anne

Madison, Wis.: Hey Gurus -- I'm (hopefully) moving out to D.C. soon with a new job, and I wanted to know where's a good place for a pint of Guinness -- the type of place where they take 119.3 seconds to pour it and there's the logo "stamped" in the foam. A friend who spend a semester in Dublin just got a new job downtown, and I'd like to celebrate our move up from interns to salary men. Downtown or Maryland would be preferable.

The Going Out Gurus: Congrats, Madison. The best pint of the black stuff I've had recently was at Biddy Mulligan's in Dupont Circle, although it probably won't impress anyone who's familiar with Dublin. Fado pours a good pint, too.

In Maryland, I'd send to Mrs. O'Leary's Irish Pub in Gaithersburg. Friendly little place with great bartenders.

Oh, and sadly, if it's crowded at happy hour or the weekend, no one is going to take two minutes to pour your Guinness. -- Fritz

Washington, D.C.: Hi,

My mother is in town this weekend, what should I do with her? She lives in a big city and has been here many times so no need to do the tourist stuff nor any need to take her to a show. Are there any interesting tours or exhibits happening?

The Going Out Gurus: Washington, not sure when mom was last in town, but you could catch the final days of Pierre Bonnard at the Phillips or -- should she be game for something hipper -- Arte Povera at the Hirshhorn. For tours about town, check in with the DC Heritage Foundation for this weekend's schedule. Of course, remember you haven't lived in Washington if you haven't clicked here. -- Maura

Silver Spring, Md.: Hi Gurus. Do you know of any social organizations in this area for young (under 35) African Americans? I went to a D.C. Young Professionals event, but there really weren't a lot of black people there. Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Fritz and I both are of the mind that young african american professionals don't have an umbrella group here but that folks find each other through those networking type happy hour events at Cada Vez, Dream, etc. We could be wrong though. Audience input? I did see something on urbanhangsuite.com about a northern virginia group similar to what you're looking for. - Rhome

Arlington, Va.: Hey,

I'd like to think that I've gotten pretty good at this "going out in D.C." thing, but this weekend I'm going into unknown territory. I am headed to Richmond for about 24 hours, to see an Art Nouveau exhibit at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. I will be spending a night downtown and would like to hit a good restaurant and a fun bar while in town. Walking distance would be nice, but not necessary. In terms of restaurants, I'm thinking a cheap, eclectic cafe with yummy food, nothing too fancy. My friend will be happy if after dinner we end up someplace with a good beer selection and with less than 50 percent of the guys in the room wearing baseball caps. I'm partial to live music myself, and have looked up the schedule at Alley Katz, which has "Emily Easterling and special guests" -- means nothing to me, and I can't find anything online. Anything come to mind with regard to either a laid-back place for dinner or a place to chill afterwards? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: I (Jen) was just in Richmond over the holidays visiting relatives, and we went to Carytown, which is a cool area of of the city -- lot of funky shops and a most excellent used CD/record store. I must confess that I didn't check out the bar and restaurant scene while there, but it seemed like a vibrant part of town, the type of place where you could park and walk until you find something cool. Having said that, I've also heard that Alley Katz is cool, though I don't know anything about Emily Easterling. If other Richmond-folk have suggestions, speak now.

se dc: is there a wine bar in this city? i mean, a place that has an extensive list and is dedicated specifically to wine, not just a restaurant that just happens to have "good wines".

The Going Out Gurus: Oh yes there is! Have you been to Mendicino Grill or Tahoga in G'town? Grapeseed in Bethesda. These three all sport American-centric lists. If you'd prefer something more global, look at downtown D.C.'s numerous ritzy restaurants: Galileo's list is a(n Italian) beach read. Perhaps you should take advantage of "Restaurant Week" and explore menus and by-the-glass pairs? -- Kate

why the gurus put their names down: what if someone asks where to buy high heels and pumps with sun dresses and jen answers. people might think it was rhome and that rhome was a chick.

rhome is a dude

The Going Out Gurus: word.

Capitol Hill, Washington, D.C.: Hi Gurus, Do you know anything about Lounge 201 (I think that's what it's called) on Massachusetts and Second St. in Capitol Hill? Looks really swanky. It's about time Capitol Hill got an upscale lounge. Do you know anything about it -- when it'll open, what it will be like, will it serve food, etc.? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Last I heard, Capitol Hill, it was supposed to open this month. But they said that last month and, I think, the month before. It's owned by the same guy as Red River Grill. No word yet on food.

What about the upstairs lounge at Politiki? The one with the "no athletic wear" policy? -- Fritz

For folks looking for things to do, : chekc out http://www.residentassociate.org

It is the site for the Smithsonian's Resident Associate programs. I finally joined because I was going to so many, it saved me $$. The programs vary from cooking with Roberto Donna to the Preservation Hall Jazz Band to Second City Comedy live to lectures and talks on things from Einstein to Jack the Ripper. There are over 1500 programs a YEAR! It really is incredible and is fun to go throughout the year but is also a great idea to take visitors to show off all the stuff we have to do around here.

The Going Out Gurus: You're right, a great idea for visitors too. Thanks.

DC: I can't find the VIP gossip? any help?

The Going Out Gurus: Read away - with a grain of salt.

Baby Shower Help: Hope you can help with this. I need to find a unique way to plan an intimate baby shower, since the mom-to-be doesn't really have many girlfriends or family nearby. I was thinking about having a nice lunch at a restaurant with a small group. Any other ideas are much appreciated!

The Going Out Gurus: I suggested this a couple weeks ago as a bridal shower option, but I'm sure it would work just as well for a nice baby shower -- how about taking the group to Made By You, where you could all make something for the little one or the mom? If you want to do the restaurant thing, you could also try taking everyone to afternoon tea. Just make sure mom orders decaf. Good luck. -- Jen

Alexandria, VA: Every single person in DC is undeniably hip, trendy and cool, and the rest of us lounging in the burbs are blubbering unfashionable idiots.

The Going Out Gurus: That why we all moved into the city. Well, except Rhome, who moved out to P.G., and Jenn, who got married.

Re: Guiness: In VA, if you are willing to travel.

Old Brogue in Great Falls and Kirkpatricks in Ashburn take their time pouring their Guiness.

The Going Out Gurus: Ah, right. The Old Brogue. I've never had the Guinness there, though, as they have the Kasteel (Belgian) and Old Speckled Hen (English) on draft, and that's more than enough for me. -- Fritz

Rockville, Md: Where is Nation and who is Abril Lavigne?
My 17 year old daughter wants to go with a bunch of friends Sunday night. Please answer

The Going Out Gurus: Hello Rockville, this is Joe and Avril Lavigne is a young (17 or 18 years old) singer/songwriter/rocker who's been getting a lot of airplay and attention for her album "Let Go" which came out last year. Nation is a large club near the Navy Yard. The show is on Sunday and I think the doors open early (5:30 p.m. or so).

Arlington, Va: First off, no self-respecting Guinness lover would go anywhere near a place that
put any sort of logo or picture on the top of their pint.

Secondly, since I'm married to an Irishman who hangs out with mainly other Irishman, I feel qualified to agree with the Gurus' assessment that Biddy Mulligan's does pull a good pint, as does Fados. It really isn't that much different from the stuff you get in Ireland (I was there 2 days ago), ever since Guinness spent about a year training bar staff in America how to pull a pint.

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks, Arlington. It's nice to know someone agrees with me. -- Fritz

DC: This is more of a Tom question, but I missed yesterday's chat.

My grandfather (pretty cool guy) is coming to visit me and wants to go out for Chinese food (although he said Thai is good too). I would really like to take him to Chinatown, but don't know of any good chinese retaurants there.

Any ideas would be great.

The Going Out Gurus: DC, dare I say that you might be better served outside of China Town. Mr. Chen's Organic Chinese Cuisine is an interesting spot on Connecticut. Also Yanyu (but expensive); A & J in Rockville is great for dim sum. -- Alexa

Alexandria: My new years resolution is to learn a new language. I want to study dutch, but can't afford an expensive berlitz course. Any places where learning a language in class or conversational form is more affordable? Thanks and happy new year.

The Going Out Gurus: I'll highly recommend the USDA's Graduate School. You don't need to work for the government to take courses there, and the instructors are generally good. Check http://grad.usda.gov/ but the spring semester might have already started. -- Fritz

Museum Newcomer: Just want to say thanks for the museum suggestions from last weeks chat. We ended up going on a fabulous tour at the National Art museum and walked through the National History one, too. It really makes me appreciate all of the free opportunities our city has to offer and I'll try to take more advantage of them! Promise!

The Going Out Gurus: Aw shucks. I'm delighted. Just in case you're bold enough to do it again this month, you should know that in honor of their 10th anniversary, the US Holocaust Memorial Museum does not required tickets this month. This is an exceptional museum, you must not miss this. -- Kate

NoVA: please don't wear heels and sundresses. Thank you.

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, even Rhome knows that.

Reston, VA: Where can a group of gals go dancing DC. We do not like the huge clubs such as five, vip or platinum. We enjoy popular music and do not like techno. Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: Chief Ike's Mambo Room and Crush come to mind, as do the basements at the Irish Times and the Guards on weekends. -- Fritz

Ballston re: bars and restuarants in Richmond: If you're downtown (I am guessing you'll be at the Omni, Marriott or - if you're lucky - the Jefferson) it's a hop skip and a jump down into the area knows as "Shockoe Bottom" or (slightly up the hill) "Shockoe Slip." You could walk easily from a couple of hotels, otherwise get their shuttle to drop you. That's sort of the Adams-Morgan of Richmond - tons of bars and restuarants, some cool, some packed with annoying college kids. It's been a while, but I used to dig Havana 59, a cuban bar/restaurant down in "The Bottom." Anyhoo, if you're downtown, that's your area. Just fruise around a see what strikes your fancy.

Carytown's best for shopping and more "hip" restaurants and is up the hill from downtown in the other direction. You'd def. need a cab.

There are also a few oldie but goodie bars along W Main St. headed up from downtown toward Carytown... used to love the Bamboo if that's still there. Just neighbrohood joints in "The Fan" - dives mainly, but fun.

The Going Out Gurus: Suggestions for our Richmond visitor. More are coming...

Glover Park, DC: Hi GoGs,
Quick question. I was driving down Connecticut Ave. in Cleveland Park and could swear I saw a new bar of some sort by Pho 79, Spices, etc. Did it take Aroma's old spot? Am I just completely out of the loop? Something called Bricks perhaps?

thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: No, Bricks has taken Coppi's Vigorelli's old spot. Anne and I just finished our joint review of it, and it's probably not worth your time. Sorry. -- Fritz

re: Richmond: My boyfriend went to school there for 4 years so I'm pretty familiar. Carytown (on Cary Street) is a very cute place and Plan 9 Records is excellent. My favorite little cafe is Strawberry Street Cafe, located on, you guessed it, Strawberry Street in the Fan. Very reasonable, cute place and good food. Also, Kuba Kuba on Lombardy and Park in the Fan is an excellent dive for Cuban food and has the best breakfasts! If you're staying in Downtown, a popular bar is Tobacco Company (not sure of the address). It's pretty big and has different rooms so you can probably avoid those baseball hat guys.

The Going Out Gurus: More Richmond stuff. Thanks, guys. (And yes, Plan 9 is excellent.)

Re: Richmond: The Bottoms Up restaurant in Richmond has really good pizza and a pretty good beer selection. I've been there several times and I recommend it, unfortunately I'm don't know the city well enough to tell you where it is exactly

The Going Out Gurus: And a third Richmond thought.

Guinness: Dude, stamping/drawing something (a shamrock) in the foam is cheesy!

Fritz, Fritz, Fritz...I cannot believe you missed some recommendations on the Guinness list, but I'm not going to say anything here 'cause I want to keep them all to myself (well me and the hep cats who already hang out there)

The Going Out Gurus: Hey, I didn't say those were the only places I've ever had a good pint. They were just suggestions.

Now, share. -- Fritz

Arlington, VA: The Improv has a minimum order policy printed on their menus. So do they not enforce that?

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, the Improv has a two item minimum (coffee, beer, burrito, dessert) -- or one double, which if I remember was the largest whiskey I've ever seen. I was lucky enough to witness it, and not receive it. -- Kate

Am I Too Late?: Help! I'm sure you get this all the time, but where can a few friends go for a good, casual brunch in the District on Sunday? We'll be at the Natural History Museum, etc. so closer to the Mall would be nice.

The Going Out Gurus: Not too late, just check out our guide too off the mall dining. Jaleo, Teaism and Austin Grill are all good bets. Have fun. -- Maura

Rockville, MD: Boyfriend and I like to eat out a lot, but also trying to save money. We go out in the Rockville/Bethesda/Chevy Chase area. Any ideas for places where he as a big time meat-eater and I as a non meat-eater can get a good (under $15 an entree meal)? Oh, he's also a pretty plain eater, while I'm a little more adventurous. We also love a good cocktail at dinner.

The Going Out Gurus: Perhaps a good bet for you two would be Clyde's. There's the hilarious new one -- Tower Oaks Lodge -- off Rockville Pike. It feels a bit like a nice retirement home in parts, but it has a pleasant bar or two and is choc full of nick-nacks. -- Alexa

suburban v. urban: ummm...then stop asking about dress codes every week!! fyi: no jeans, no athletic shoes. is that difficult?

if you have to ask, you probably can't get it.

The Going Out Gurus: not entirely. some places change their dress code depending on the night, the time, the event, etc. no harm in making sure you look okay. -- Fritz

re Rhodeside: Rhodeside is undergoing renovation of its bar area. They'll be back open soon, supposedly. I am on their mailing list and I got something from them yesterday explaining this! PS They also own Ragtime, down on Courthouse Road. That place is fun too!!

The Going Out Gurus: That explains it. Thanks.

Oi!: You know, everyone says you guys have the coolest jobs and while I'll admit what you do is fun, do you find yourselves banging your heads on your keyboard when people ask the same questions over and over again every week ("where can a group of....").

The Going Out Gurus: Oh man, we get this question all of the time and we're so sick of answering it. No, just kidding. We do have great jobs. And if we have to answer some of the same questions every week, well, damnit, that's the price we have to pay. Still, if anyone asks for a good restaurant near the MCI center one more time, .....

Annandale, VA: I am celebrating my last weekend in DC with a group of 8-10 (so Platinum is out) We are eating dinner at Reef. Afterwards, I want to go dancing to "cheesy" popular, hip - hop inspired music. NOT TRANCE. 80's 90's music okay, as long as it's TLC, Michael Jackson, Madonna, etc and not Wang Chung. The only place I know is Chief Ike's. Any other ideas. I don't want to have to boogie there on my last night but it seems my last resort. Please help. Want to leave dancing.

The Going Out Gurus: Crush is right across the street, and should fill your needs.

Georgetown Theater Policy: I was there last weekend and read the policy. The deal is: during the week, all movies before 6 sell for matinee price. On the weekend, it's only the first showing.

The Going Out Gurus: Well that might explain the discrepancy. Again, I'll look into this and clarify next week. -- Jen

Arlington VA: ...to the person who said Iota's too far away - it's only a couple blocks from the Clarendon metro (three metro stops west of DC (Foggy Bottom) on the blue/orange line). I live in Arlington and am so sick of my DC friends telling me I live too far away!

The Going Out Gurus: You're on the other side of the river. But hey, if the Metro goes there...

Petworth: I appear to be under some sort of brunch curse. That is, I can get good brunch only at a few places. Every time I try a new place, I cringe. And as I love brunch, this makes me sad.

Last week we had a most horrid experience at Colorado Kitchen. No, the food was good, except for one item that was messed up. It was the slow, nasty service, and the refusal to fix the bad item that made me nuts. Oh, and the refusal to remove it from the check. They lost 3 regulars that Sunday.

On the other hand, we hit the Reef for brunch a few weeks back, and it was great! The basket of pastries is rave-worthy.

I really do like brunch. And so, I'm looking for suggestions for other, non-cursed places.

Places we can get good brunch: Polly's, the Reef, Cafe La Ruche, Smithsonian Castle, Trio, Cafe Luna.

Places we have had bad brunch: Colorado Kitchen (good food, horrid service), Senses (again, good food, horrid service), Corcoran Gallery (bad food, good service - for a buffet)

I want to add to the roster of available brunches!

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks, Pet.

baby shower suggestion: What about at someone's home? This worked out perfectly for one of the activities we did at a recent shower- decorating onesies (babies go thru sooo many of these). It was fun to see the different personalities of the guests come out - some made simple designs (duck, rattle, etc.), while others got funky with peace signs, polka dots, etc. The onesies and fabric paint were pretty cheap to buy, and the mom-to-be got a whole wardrobe of onsies (in addition to the other gifts we all brought.)

The Going Out Gurus: Very true, no reason you can't do something like this on your own. Thanks for the suggestion.

Old Town, VA: Top three choices for happy hours in Dupont and Georgetown? Places to sit and appetizers available please.

The Going Out Gurus: Sure, OT.

Dupont:
Fox and Hounds, Cafe Citron, Uni: A Sushi Place.

Georgetown:
Clydes, Chadwick's, Mr. Smith's.

-- Fritz

Falls Church, Virginia: Hey Gurus!
I'm newly single again, just having broken up with my boyfriend-of-two-years, and need some suggestions for good places to meet guys. And times.

Organization suggestions are good, too- although I've already signed up with Single Volunteers of DC, so I don't need that one. Went to a DC Young Professionals event the other night, but not much selection there.

Any pointers?

The Going Out Gurus: It's 2003 now and it's all about Out With the Old, In With the New. Naw, for real, Carolyn Hax told me to tell you to slow your roll. - Rhome

Washington, D.C.: I have a crazy work schedule that makes me unavailable for dates until after 10 most nights...I want to get to know these guys without the effects of alcohol playing a major part, but I haven't come up with activities that don't center around bars...any suggestions? Its too late for dinner and a movie precludes conversation. Am I doomed?

The Going Out Gurus: Washington, we're all doomed. But if anyone has any really, really good ideas, we'd love to hear them.

9:30 Club: I saw Patty Smith perform at the 9:30 Club last week. She put on a great show, but it was so loud I couldn't stand it -- had to leave early! Have others experienced this at the 9:30 Club?

The Going Out Gurus: Hey, this is Joe and while I've been to lots of 9:30 shows, I've never had to walk out because it was too loud. I'm pretty sure the club sells earplugs for $1 or 2, so if you have the problem again, you should pick up a pair.

The District: Hmm... I just took a look at the VIP comments page, and there's something about all of those postings that seem rather suspicious. Does anyone else notice that all of the postings seem to be a little too consistent: exact same time periods waiting in line, no typos (which are usually pretty common), no change in typing style (i.e. people typing in all lowercase), and they're all anonymous posters. Don't get me wrong -- I wouldn't doubt the probability of a NYE fiasco as it's being described; but isn't the compition between all of those mega-swank type clubs pretty fierce? Is a whisper campaign totally outside the realm of possibility?

...Chalk it up to the cynic in me.

The Going Out Gurus: Yeah, District, but I know people who went and they told me pretty much the same things (endless lines, packed bars, etc.) but as one guy said, "You have to know those things are gong to happen at a huge club on New Year's Eve."

And I, too, am a cynic. -- Fritz

Arlington, VA: I think this answers several people's queries, actually: the Clarendon Ballroom is a great place for anyone who wants to go out dancing without feeling claustrophobic or like you're the only one there over 22. It's right by the Clarendon metro. They have cover bands sometimes, and a DJ who plays a lot of 70's and 80's.

The Going Out Gurus: Thought about that a few times today, Arlington, but I didn't answet the questions. Thanks for the reminder. -- Fritz

The Going Out Gurus: Okay, that was a busy chat. Thanks for all your questions and comments. We appreciate them all. We'll see you next week.

Oh, one more matter of business: When I was on vacation in December, one of the other Gurus explained that I was at Epcot and Daytona Beach with my family. This was, of course, a joke. Some people didn't realize that. My mother has asked me to explain that she would never, ever go to Daytona or Epcot.

Sorted. -- Fritz
