Got Plans?
With the Entertainment Guide Staff
washingtonpost.com

Thursday, Feb. 13, 2003; 1 p.m. ET

Every Thursday at 1 p.m. ET, washingtonpost.com's Entertainment Guide experts share their best bets for local flavor, great dates and family fun. Got plans? Great. Need plans? Just ask. We have the skinny on the bars and clubs, concerts, kitchens, theaters and special events that keep life interesting. We're going out gurus, and we're at your service.

Of course, we're happy to answer questions about local entertainment, but we need to hear from you, too. Introduce us to the coolest DJ or the fastest bartender you've encountered. Sound off on the week's best concert or the city's best burger. Tell us about the best place to amuse little kids or a big art fan. Together we can plan fun ways to spend weekdays, weekends, dates and holidays. The pleasure is ours, and yours.

Each week a different guru will act as host or hostess, but the entire staff is at your service. If you're looking for more ideas, see the Entertainment Guide.

Submit your questions and comments before or during the discussion.

The transcript follows.

Editor's Note: Washingtonpost.com moderators retain editorial control over Live Online discussions and choose the most relevant questions for guests and hosts; guests and hosts can decline to answer questions.

The Going Out Gurus: Welcome to this pre-Valentine's, pre-President's Day, pre-snow-and-sleet storm edition of "Got Plans?" I, Jen Chaney, am playing hostess this week, but I'm joined by most of the usual crew -- Anne, Fritz, Rhome, Joe, Maura and Alexa. Before we start, make sure you take a look at our Valentine's guide before you bombard us with Valentine's questions. You may be able to find some of the answers you seek in that handy little guide. Now, on with the chat. We're heartbreakers, dream-makers and love-takers, and we're ready for your questions.

Lookin' Out on Farragut Square: I recently saw something on TV that showed all these people sitting around learning how to make martinis and other mixed drinks. At the end of their "class" they were able to enjoy the finished products.

I'm looking for something like that-- a bartender class designed for those of us who just want to entertain and impress our friends without having to consult a drink book every 10 seconds. I don't want a two-week course that professional bartenders must take.

Does anything like this exist in the DC area?

The Going Out Gurus: Hey, FS. You'll find occasional courses offered by the D.C. Society of Young Professionals (www.dcyoungpro.com) and TasteDC (www.tastedc.com). They usually have bartenders from Ozio or Felix teach you how to make seasonal drinks. I went to one at Ozio and thought it was pretty cool, if a bit methodical. -- Fritz

Friend: My friends and I have been looking for a coffee shop that stay open late into the night -- most of the ones we've seen close by 11 p.m. EVEN on the weekends! We're new to the area and are wondering if there are even any in Northern Virginia.

And, oh yes, a couple of weeks ago we went to Jaleo near the MCI Center and had a GREAT time -- great food and great atmosphere!

Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Hello friend. Have you been to Misha's? in Old Town. That stays open til about midnight, I think. There's also St. Elmo's in Del Ray though I'm not certain how late they close. I'm drawing a blank at the mo for others, but I'm chime back in once my brain gets rolling. -- Alexa.

Washington, D.C.: Are you guys still horny about RFD? I certainly love it too, but I'd appreciate it if someone staged a buffalo wing intervention and taught them how to make palatable wings. Still, if I have to get by with the cheese and fruit plate and a bushelfull of Duvel, I'll be just fine.

The Going Out Gurus: Yeah, Washington. I like R.F.D. -- for the beer. But I doubt I'm going in on a game night anytime soon, because the bar gets so swamped. The cheese platters and burgers are great, though. And I heard they'll have JHB Oakham on cask this weekend, too. -- Fritz

Washington, DC: What is your locale of choice to drink away the terror threat, and get stupid singing karaoke?

Also-- any word on 201 on the Hill?

The Going Out Gurus: Hey DC, this is Joe and we've spent all morning wrapping up our cubicles in plastic and duct tape, so we'll be drinking in safety at our desks until they sound the all clear. Fritz will be answering your 201 question shortly.

Drinking in the U.K.?: This may be a little off-topic, but Fritz, I saw your comment last week re: 24-hour drinking in the U.K. I was wondering if you know how soon is "soon" -- I'm going in mid-April. Will I be so lucky? Those pubs close early!

The Going Out Gurus: Not anytime soon, I'm afraid. What you need to do is hit the pubs until 11 or so, and then get yourself over to one of the late-night bars, like Zeta in the London Hilton, or Che, or a nice spot with a 2 or 3 a.m. license. Pick up a copy of the Sauce Guide to Bars and Pubs at Smith's or Waterstone's and they'll give you the lowdown. -- Fritz

Arlington, Va.: I am looking for a laid back lounge for some after dinner drinks on Valentine's Day. We are having dinner at Ruth's Chris -- 9:30. I am aware of 18th St. Lounge, Chi-Cha, and the other better known places in the Dupont/Adams Morgan area. But I am looking for something that won't be as crowded and a little more intimate. I have also considered a nice hotel lounge as well. Any ideas?

The Going Out Gurus: Soussi won't be as packed at the places you mentioned. You might also try Bossa or Helix, although I expect any chill lounge will be swarmed on the 14th. It's amateur night at lounges as well as restaurants. -- Fritz

Jonzen for Popeyes again: I figure i'm gonna treat myself to some Popeyes tommorow.

Do i get strips or spicy chicken?
And does anyone know if the Popeyes on 14th up from Thomas Circle takes credit cards?

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, it's Joe here. Rhome and I battled to answer this one. I can't imagine anyone choosing strips over the spicy chicken. Don't know if they take credit cards, but they should establish a frequent fryer program. Oh man, that was lame. Sorry.

Not intended to be a V-day question, but..: I was wondering if you knew of any restaurants by the Birchmere. I did use your site, but it didn't show much. I'm looking for something fairly reasonable, and since the show I'm seeing is tomorrow, some place that won't be totally booked for early dinners.
Thanks a bunch.

The Going Out Gurus: Are you looking for somewhere within walking distance, in which case you are limited to RT's or the Wafle (sic) House? Better choices further in towards Alexandria along Mount Vernon Ave. are places like the Evening Star and Majestic Lounge, Taqueria Poblano, Los Amigos, Fireflies. -- Alexa

U St., D.C.: Good googly moogly! Can someone please tell me what happened to the Duke Ellington mural at 13th and U? I live right around the corner and just realized it's not there! Also, are there any jazz shows I shouldn't miss coming up in the next month? Many thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: So sad U Street, makes a brother want to shed a tear. It looks like U Street now has a big open gash, a sign of its soul being leached out. Nicole Miller wrote about this some time ago but it was removed in advance of development going up on that block (retail or condo's or something). There has been talk of putting it back up elsewhere but that hasn't been confirmed. - Rhome

Daytona 500: Is there a sports bar around that caters to NASCAR fans? It's time for Daytona, the first sign of spring!

The Going Out Gurus: Summers shows most NASCAR events (if they don't conflict too heavily with college basketball or soccer), and even had drink specials last year. And for some reason, I want to say Uncle Jed's Roadhouse as well. Anyone else want to chime in? -- Fritz

Washington, D.C.: Hello
I have such the hankering to go cross country skiing -- but I don't know where to begin to look for ski rentals and/or places to ski. I'd like it to be within an hour from the city. Do you guys know where I can start my search? Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, DC. Allegany Expeditions will rent you skis for New Germany State Park in Maryland. They offer lessons at $15 an hour, too. Give 'em a call at 800-819-5170. Any other skiers out there have suggestions?

From Last Week: Weren't one of you going to the new all-night party at Singapore Bistro? What was it like? Crowd, music, etc.?

The Going Out Gurus: Yeah, I went. It was fun, actually. They just move all the furniture on the top floor to create a dance area, with space to lounge on the second and a full sushi bar on the first floor. The music was trance, house and commercial hip-hop, and while the crowd had an Asian flavor, it was fairly diverse. And it goes until 5 a.m. with no cover. -- Fritz

Bethesda, MD: Gurus, this is probably a question for Rhome - my man, I'm from the ATL, and while the DC club scene is good, I miss getting krunk to the Dirty South sound. DJ's up here play some, but its just part of the mix. Any clubs/dj's up here have a particular affinity for the dirty dirty? I'm talking 'bout like Trick, Cash Money crew, Project Pat type stuff.

The Going Out Gurus: Hey cuz, you've pretty much nailed it. In the big party-centric and jiggified spots you'll get sections of a night's mix devoted to southern sounds but I don't think you'll get any more than that anywhere else. Has anyone out there been some where and heard DJ Screw, L'il Flip, Three Six and Field Mob most of the night? - Rhome

Girls' Weekend: One of my good friends is coming into town this weekend. We were hoping to get out of the city and have a nice weekend getaway for catching up. But everything is centered around couples and romance. Do you have any suggestions for a weekend trip that won't be so "Valentiney" but rather perfect for two single ladies?

The Going Out Gurus: GW, not sure what you're game for, maybe try your luck in Atlantic City? Closer to home there's plenty to do in Baltimore or Charlottesville. Or pamper yourselves with a little spa getaway. -- Maura

Arlington, Va.: Oh wise gurus...answer me this. Which bars are best for PDA? If my valentine and I were to, say, get a wee bit frisky...where would you recommend? And by wee bit, I mean nothing illegal of course. Any place that you can think of that's dimly lit, inexpensive, and somewhat PDA-friendly? Much, much heartfelt thanks in advance.

The Going Out Gurus: I tend to see a lot of smooch-em ups going on at Chi-Cha but I'm sure a lot of folks will have that same idea tomorrow. The upper loft at Blue Room works well too but you have to grab that tiny prime bit of real estate early in the night. It's more fun if you get creative and think outside the box anyway. Readers? - Rhome

Washington, DC: I really want those front-row seats to Rent tomorrow...How early do you think I need to go wait to snag a coupla tickets?

The Going Out Gurus: Hey, D.C. We've gotten a couple of questions about this. The wristband distribution begins at 10 a.m., so if you really, really want them, I'd say get there around 8. Bear in mind, getting there early only guarantees that you may receive one of the 70 wristbands. You still have to come back later for the drawing, and there's no guarantee you'll be one of the numbers drawn. But let's throw this to the masses: has anyone out there done this front row "Rent" thing? And how early did people line-up? (If you don't know what we're talking about, click here and scroll down to find out about this process.)

Winchester, Va.: I'm going to the 9:30 to see Vince Gill on Sunday and was wondering if you can tell me how early we need to get there to grab seats upstairs? I would imagine there will be a crowd. Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: Hi Winchester, this is Joe and there are so few seats at the upstairs bar (maybe just a dozen) that you basically have to be there when they open the doors. For Sunday's show that means 7 p.m. And you might even want to get there earlier than that.

Washington, D.C.: My friends and I are trying to save money. Do you know of any free/inexpensive festivals or shows we should catch this weekend?

The Going Out Gurus: Washington, our free and cheap guide may have all the answers for you. As for President's weekend in particular there's Alexandria's Washington Birthday Parade and Mount Vernon celebration. The Millennium Stage has bluegrass this weekend and of course most of those museums are free or at least quite cheap. -- Maura

Fantasieland, Deutschland: Ach, so. Liebe Fritz, will you be my Valentine?

The Going Out Gurus: Vielleicht. Gehen Sie zum Brickskeller am Dienstag?

Arlington, Va.: Hi,

What can you tell me about the Clark Street Playhouse? What's the dress code? Are there any good restaurants between the Crystal City Metro station and the theatre? Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: I (Jen) have to admit that I haven't been to Clark Street. Anyone out there willing to help this Arlington theater-goer?

Arlington,VA: Gurus,
Can you throw this one out to all the female poster out there? When it comes to chocolates, is Godiva the hands down winner? Or would a box of Whitmans do the job as well? Are there any other chocolate alternatives I'm missing here?

The Going Out Gurus: Arlington. Forget about both and head off to Kingsbury Chocolates on King Street in Old Town for something that's infinitely superior. In fact, all you love birds out there would do well to listen to my best tip of the day. For about $2, you can buy a single, pink-dusted, rose-scented truffle that comes sitting on a real rose petal in its own little box. How deliciously perfect is that. Give the box-of-chox a miss altogether. -- Alexa

Alexandria, Va.: Getting out of dodge for the weekend, spending three days in Williamsburg. What the heck is there to do after dark down there, anyway?

The Going Out Gurus: You use the word heck as if there is nothing to do in the Burg. I (Jen) have answered this question many times, so I'll give you a brief rundown. You can hang out at Paul's Deli or the Green Leafe or one of the Colonial taverns (Chowning's or Gambol's), or you could catch a movie at the Williamsburg Theatre on Duke of Gloucester Street, which is very cool. There are also some cute coffee chops in the D.O.G. street area, but the names escape me. Anyway, this should be a start.

Adams Morgan, Washington, D.C.: So Fritz, get some sleep Friday night before Arsenal/Manchester United? Or just keep it rolling and drink till Cap Lounge opens at 7 a.m. Saturday?

The Going Out Gurus: I have no idea. I was thinking about staying home, laying in bed and listening to it on my computer, but I'll probably try to grab a catnap somewhere in there.

Out of towners: So, where are the best places to watch the missles in Washington being deployed?

The Going Out Gurus: Oh man, people are always asking us this question. We have great views from our office, but it's not like we can invite everyone over.

Washington, D.C.: Dying of curosity here...does anyone know about "Home" near 9th and G? All lit up in neon with a keyhole as the logo. Restaurant? Bar? Club?

The Going Out Gurus: Did you try putting it in the search box, Washington? It should be listed under Bars/Clubs. Anyway, here's my review, which ran in the Weekend section last month. -- Fritz

Washington, D.C.: Yesterday there was an online article about various places around town that serve fondue -- but now I can't find the article! I tried typing "fondue" into the entertainment page search engine, but I still could not find it. Can you provide a link? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Here.

For: Drinkin in the UK: Til the pub hours change, you might want to try the Packenham Arms, 1 Packenham St. WC1, which has seven real ales on tap, good food, and is open til 1:30 (special license). Handy to Bloomsbury/British Museum area.

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks. I'll put that in my tip sheet. At school, we used to go to the Flintlock and Firkin on Tottenham Court Rd. near the University of London because it also had a late license. Alas, it closed a year or two ago. -- Fritz

Re: Rent: Back in the day when they had an actual line for front row tickets, I started waiting in line around 3 a.m. for a matinee show - and I wasn't the first one there (probably around the 5th if I recall correctly). Now that it's all pretty much left to chance, I don't think it's worth it to wait in line for hours just to get a wristband. PLUS, this particular touring production didn't get a very good review from Peter Marks, just FYI.

The Going Out Gurus: I (Jen) don't think Peter Marks panned it, but you all can judge for yourselves. Here's his review. And thanks for the line-up info. I agree that since it's a drawing, it doesn't seem worth it to wait for too long, especially in cold weather.

re: Coffee Houses: If you count Cosi as a coffee house, those all stay open till 2 or so I think. And you can have the delicious smores.

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, Cosi. Cozy.

Help with Grandparents: What can one do with visiting grandparents? They're not into fancy restaurants, movies that are "sexy," and we've exhausted most of the well-known museum options on previous visits. In the past, they enjoyed Old Town, the IMAX thing, and the botanical gardens near the Capitol. They're in their 80s, which limits excessive trekking around, even though they're in great shape. I'm looking for one cool place to visit or one cool thing to do, so as not to tire them out, but still make them feel like they experienced something fun. I'm particularly struggling because of the weather forecast-- looks like outdoor activities are not a good idea this weekend.

The Going Out Gurus: Have they been to the National Museum of African Art? With Saturday's free concert and the several new exhibits there, you could easily have a special afternoon indoors. But if the weather is clear and they'd like a chance to stretch their legs, stroll the grounds or tour the main house at Mount Vernon. With Washington's birthday this weekend, there's lots of events happening, plus admission is free this Monday. -- Anne

Ballston re: arlington after-dinner drinks: For the Arlington folks looking for after V-day drinks in dupont circle... I know of nowhere more romantic and chill for after dinner drinks than Tabard Inn. Find yourself a cozy sofa and canoodle.

I also love it for a first or second date - great for quiet conversation. And a reasonably priced cheese plate!

Skip the swanky loud lounges and head to the Tabard, trust me.

The Going Out Gurus: Yeah, Ballston. But I've been there on V-Day weekend. Everyone seems to think the way you (and I) do, and there are no couches to be had. Now, NEXT weekend ... -- Fritz

Bethesda, MD: Hi Gurus!

My husband and I are planning on going to the US botanical gardens either Saturday or Sunday, we haven't been before. Where nearby, or close to a Metro stop, would be a good place to have lunch? We want something causal, fairly inexpensive, and yummy. We are open to most all kinds of food, ethnic food is great, and we are not big meat-eaters - often we end up eating vegetarian dishes, depending on what appeals.

I love your chats! You guys always have great ideas, and I'm hoping you can help me out this time!

Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Hi Bethesda. I think you'll enjoy the Botanic Garden. It's the perfect time of year to stop in to our little urban oasis. Finding eats nearby means either walking up to Capitol Hill or walking to the other side of the Mall. For Saturday lunch, I'd stick with the latter and give the Pavillon Cafe (in the National Gallery's Sculpture Garden), Teaism, Jaleo, or -- just a couple blocks further -- Zaytinya. You could walk to any and just hop on another Metro stop closer by to take you back Bethesda way. Enjoy. -- Maura

Washington, D.C.: gurus, dumb questions, but: dress code at bossa? jeans ok? how about kicks? what would you recommend?

The Going Out Gurus: I've never worn anything but jeans and sneakers there and never had a problem. You won't either. -- Fritz

Washington, DC: For Arlington theatergoer, Clark Street Playhouse is pretty laid-back. I think jeans are totally acceptable.

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for the info.

WDC: Re: Skiing:

The Washingtonpost.com travel section has a good Mid-Atlantic Ski Guide. I was up at Whitetail last weekend, and it was perfect with the fresh natural snow, although I didn't realize it was in a dry county and there would be no alcohol.

The Going Out Gurus: Why, yes they do and here it is.

Washington, DC: Do all of the gurus have honeys for Valentine's?

The Going Out Gurus: Fritz, Alexa, Jen, and Anne are all honeyed up.

Capitol Hill: Hey GoGs!

Just wanted to let you know that you should definitely check out Lounge 201. I went on Tuesday night and had a GREAT time (if too many White Cosmos)! The front room was nice, but I really liked hanging out in the back room with those nifty seats.

I hope this one lasts - Cap. Hill needs a refuge from the unwashed (Hill staffer dollar beer) masses. I'm looking forward to going back!

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks, CH. Maura and I were by with friends on Tuesday, and had a few drinks and a really nice time. I enjoyed the pseudo-Art Deco design and the high booths (but honestly, they got when I walked in to the intro to Lionel Hampton's "Flyin' Home").

Maura loved New York Martinis, I like the Gibson (mmm ... cocktail onions) and Manhattan. All drinks start at $10, as do most of the flatbreads and burgers, so staffers should bring their boss (or a favorite lobbyist).

I agree that it's a great addition to the Hill though, and I'm looking forward to going back soon so I can write it up. -- Fritz

Washington, DC: Any idea when Abraham Lincoln's summer home will be open for the public?

The Going Out Gurus: Not for a few more years, Washington. For updates check in with the National Trust for Historic Preservation. They're overseeing the restoration of what will be called the President Lincoln and Soldiers' Home National Monument. -- Maura

Bethesda: Do you know whether the East Coast Jazz Festival in Rockville this weekend is a worthy event? Their website (www.fmjseastcoastjazz.com)is showing lots of performers -- but I am new to the area and never heard of any of them. Any recommendations?

The Going Out Gurus: Richard Harrington has a nice long preview in tomorrow's Weekend section. But you can't go wrong with Keter Betts or Buck Hill.

Re: Arlington, PDA: As part of a crazy-in-love couple, I enjoy the hand holding and kissypoo and all that, but please stay home. It is ridiculously disrespectful to the parties nearby to get all gropeful in public, regardless of the holiday. And let's not forget how important it is to show some respect to your intended grope-ee. Isn't it nicer to keep some things private in a relationship?

The Going Out Gurus: We've got a lot coming in about this and I admit I've been grossed out by some things I've seen so I will have to issue the official Rhomie-Rhome PDA Manifesto (it's so sad that it has come to this... why, people WHY?!?).
- Really folks, a few affectionate smooch-em ups are just fine in public. I'm the biggest cynic around but have we all become haters to such a high degree?
- Open mouthed face sucking is not acceptable though.
- No groping or removal of clothing.
- No invading of anyone else's personal space or otherwise adversely affecting the vibe of the spot where you happen to be.
- All rules are suspended if you can grab some space that is dimly lit or secluded so you won't draw attention to yourselves. Gotta have some excitement in our lives that isn't terrorist related, no?

Alexandria, VA: Can you guys confirm that the Guinness Toast is next Friday? I've seen ads in the free weekly papers by Murphy's and other places mentioning it but I couldn't find the official website that I've seen in years past.

The Going Out Gurus: Yes. The annual Guinness Pointless Marketing Exercise and Toast is on the 21st. -- Fritz

Duke: No way! I can't believe it's gone.
How does one "put up" a mural once it's gone?

The Going Out Gurus: I believe it consisted of sectional panels. Doesn't soothe the hurt that much though. - Rhome

Arlington, VA: Hi Gurus!

My family will be in town all day Sunday, and the weather forecast sounds disheartening. They've visited several times already, and have done most of the "DC Tour" to the hilt. Rather than make mealtimes the focal points of the day, are there any special events going on this weekend, in DC or the vacinity- that would entertain a group with ages ranging from 14-50?

Thanks!!

The Going Out Gurus: It's not the typical concert setting, but the East Coast Jazz festival in Rockville this weekend offers concerts from noon-5:30 Sunday, and many events are free. Tickets are still available for Rent at the Warner Theatre -- check the link there for detailed info on how to get reduced price tickets. Basically, it involves a lot of standing in line, so you could make that into a special event for your fam. -- Anne

Washington, D.C.: We are a group of 10 very low-paid interns who received a gift of $200 and would like to go out for a nice dinner together -- we rarely go out and don't know many good restaurants. We would like a place that can accomodate 10 people, has a comfortable atmosphere, good food and good value -- i.e. around $10 dinners so that we can provide a nice tip and maybe get beverages. We like ethnic foods but would like a range of options that are either near Mt. Pleasant/Columbia Heights or near a Metro stop. Is that a tall order? Thanks for your help!

The Going Out Gurus: Ten people for $200. Let's think. How's about the Austin Grill (fill up on those delicious chips), Pho 75, Cafe Asia? -- Alexa

re: coffeehouses: In Ballston, the Cosi on Fairfax Ave. stays open late on weekends. And if you metro into the District, there's Kramerbooks (Dupont Metro, open 24 hrs on weekends) & Soho Tea & Coffee (Dupont Metro, open till 4 am on wkd). I know they're not in NoVa, but both of those are really really close to the Metro.

The Going Out Gurus: More on this topic.

Washington DC: How about the National Building Museum for the visiting grandparents? Close to the Metro, terrific space, great exhibits, but less crowded and demanding than the Smithsonians. Afterwards, relax in their courtyard cafe or metro over to Union Station for more dining options (or the Smithsonian Postal Museum, which is just next door).

The Going Out Gurus: Great idea, DC. It's so beautiful and expansive inside.

Alexandria, Va.: Hey Gurus,

Thoughts on Helix tomorrow night around 8-8:30 p.m. for two couples. Think we'll be able to snag one of the little tables? Also, never had any of the food at Helix. Think we can make a light meal out of the appetizers or should we just down a couple of drinks and head elsewhere for a meal?

The Going Out Gurus: Hey Alexandria,
I was there two Fridays ago, and 8 p.m. should be fine for a table. You can certainly just have apps for dinner -- the corn dogs and house-made chips with blue cheese dip are my favorites. There's nothing huge on the menu besides steak and burgers, so you can snack away while having a few yummy (and highly potent) cocktails. -- Fritz

Petworth: Obscure but cool things to do with visiting Grandparents: Far too many people never see the off-the-mall stuff.

So, can I suggest the Building Museum, the Frederick Douglas House (way neat place), the Octagon, and perhaps the Arboretum (I can't spell!)

Live theater can also be good for them. Millenium Stage? Or, I believe Ford's has something playing right now. Double bonus there - history and theater.

The Going Out Gurus: Another vote for the Building Museum.

Wesley Heights, Washington, D.C.: One of my favorite things about visiting New York is the cheap nail salons on every corner offering $10 manicures and $15 pedicures. I'm so fed up with the high prices in D.C. Are there any good cheap salons within District limits that I don't know about?

The Going Out Gurus: Wesley Heights, I'm a fan of Nail Avenue up by Van Ness, any other ideas out there? -- Maura

Arlington, Va.: My boyfriend is taking me to a performance at Ford's Theatre on Sunday afternoon for my birthday, yeah! We are looking for a nice resturaunt to go to afterwards that is in walking distance (since it is supposed to be a winter disaster here?!). I was wondering if you all had any suggestions. We are pretty much up for anything.

The Going Out Gurus: Have a look-see here. A little roundup of pre-theatre eats.

LeDroit Park: re: Ellington Mural

Lots of chatter about this lately on community listserves. Councilman Graham sez the mural WILL be relocated soon, somewhere on U Street.

Let's hope!

The Going Out Gurus: That'll work, but what about the Madam's Organ sign?

Washington, DC: What's the scoop on the singles wine tasting at the Washington Wine Academy?

The Going Out Gurus: Washington, we've got the skinny on the Washington Wine Academy Event right here. "Come Wine With Us, as it's called, is geared to singles and hosted by the Post's Michael Franz. We'd vouch for him anyday. -- Maura

Gaithersburg, MD: Love the chat! Can you name some good martini bars in DC? What do you guys think about Savino's in Dupont? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: I like Savino's, especially their new (well, new in December) cocktail menu. My favorite martinis at the moment are at the International Bar, Helix, Aroma, Off the Record and Gazuza. The cocktail lists at 15ria, Topaz and the new Lounge 201 are good for experimenting.

But honestly, a Martini is gin and vermouth. That's it. -- Fritz

Washington, D.C.: Been attempting to get in touch with the Uptown for several days with no luck. Will they be showing the movie "Gods and Generals" when it opens for release Feb. 21?

The Going Out Gurus: Just called the Uptown -- they don't know what will run next, but the woman there said it's definitely not "Gods and Generals." So I guess "Two Towers" will be there a while longer, which makes sense since it was nominated this week for an Oscar for Best Picture. -- Jen

Arlington, Va.: Submitting this early in hope that you great gurus can help me out!!! My boyfriend and I are going to Boston this weekend for a romantic getaway. Do you have any recommendations on some great restaurants (doesn't matter what type of food!) that won't break our budget?? What about bars/lounges to check out? Thanks!!!!

The Going Out Gurus: Try the Golden Temple in Brookline. Chic decor and well-regarded food. They had a great dj when I was last there (Johan?) playing soulful house, downtempo and nu-jazz flavors. The drinks are killer though, big exotic almost tropical concoctions that pack a wallop. - Rhome

Silver Spring, Md.: Hey Gurus, I am looking for good Czech or Russian food around DC, possibly even a bar where a good crowd of Russians or Czechs hang out (my boyfriend is Czech). Any ideas?

The Going Out Gurus: Hey Silver Spring. Go to Maxim's. It can be a little expensive if you go deep into the menu, but they have really good vodka and cheap traditional Russian dishes. It has a good rep with Russian Ex-Pats, too. -- Fritz

Rockville MD: Clark Stree Playhouse. Casual atmosphere, it is in a somewhat seedy part of Crystal City so no need to dress to impress. Saw a Hamburger Hamlet on the way from metro.

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for the tip. But does any part of Crystal City really qualify as seedy? Maybe sketchy, or another adjective that begins with "s" and ends with "y," but seedy?

Attention 10 Interns: Your best bet (and the best bang for your buck) is Buca di Beppo. You only need to order one entree for every three people. That leaves plenty of $$$ for wine and dessert.

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for the tip.

Washington, DC: Hi.
I need help! I'm 34 and recently single after a four-year relationship. Most of my friends have paired up or moved away. I'm not complaining - I love being single, or I will just as soon as I figure out where the single people my age are? I've gone back to all my old haunts - I'm either too old or they are gone. Single 35 and ups? Where are you? Where do you go in the DC/VA areas? Thanks!!!!

The Going Out Gurus: Hi Washington -- and to the other reader with a similar situation. You're right, the old haunts probably aren't the answer. Is there anything you've been wanting to try -- art classes, cooking classes? There are always book clubs to join (try your nearest bookstore) or give some group volunteering a shot. You can't go wrong there. -- Maura

V Day Tip!: Armand's Pizza has heart shaped pizza. So cute!

The Going Out Gurus: Except that it's Armand's pizza.

Arlington, Va.: Hey GoGs! Question pour vous. I love Singh Thai. I love the food, atmosphere, service, and price! Most affordable ethnic (i.e., non-Western-European) restaurants seem to be lacking in atmosphere. What are some of the area's best cheap restaurants that don't scrimp on ambiance?

The Going Out Gurus: If you like Sing Thai, you'd probably also really like Neisha Thai on Route 7 at Baileys Crossroads. A sweet, funky little place. Reasonable. Tasty. -- Alexa

Nail Salon: I am a huge fan of Ace Nails at 17th and R. Manicures are $10, but pedis are a bit more at $25. They are nice, it's really clean, and it is easy to get an appointment...

The Going Out Gurus: Tips.

Dulles VA: Hi, my office would like to find a cheap place to have happy hour somewhere in the Reston-Tysons area. Any thoughts? Margaritas would be tops.

The Going Out Gurus: On the Border in Tysons has a killer happy hour special -- margaritas, Coronas and nachos, I think. -- Fritz

Seedy Crystal City: Perhaps if you live in Rockville, there are also seedy parts of Bethesda?

The Going Out Gurus: Oh, Bethesda's not seedy. But Potomac? That place is seed-o-rama.

Dupont Circle, Washington, D.C.: I seriously considered not reading the chat today, for fear of seeing too many Valentine's-related questions. I broke up with my boyfriend two months ago, and all of my single friends are out of town tomorrow night. What's a girl to do?

The Going Out Gurus: Treat yourself, Dupont, and start early. Our readers' favorite salon, Andre Chreky, is open til 8, still taking appointments for haircuts or a mani/pedi (til 5:30). I (Anne) love Trim, which is open til 7, and their happy staff also has a chair available for you. The next seat you'll want is at Aroma. Get there before 7, talk to either of our Bartenders of the Month there, and "they will make everything better," promises Fritz.

Washington, DC: The National Cathedral would be a good place to tour with grandparents.

The Going Out Gurus: Nice idea, Washington.

Nails: Q-West on 18th street does a nice pedi for around 20 bucks, and I think the mani is even cheaper..

The Going Out Gurus: And our friend Kim O'D endorses Nail Villa in Georgetown.

Visions, DC: Know anything about Vision on Friday nights at UP on F Street? They have some DJs lined up there...but I have never been. What is the atmosphere like? General impressions?

The Going Out Gurus: It was my understanding that Vision Fridays ended because of, um, differences with the management, and Volume Saturdays (the d'n'b night) were going monthly. I swear, that place is constantly churning its schedule. Not a good sign. -- Fritz

Petworth, Washington, DC: So, I have a movie question.

Some theaters release their times well in advance, allowing me to plan. Others, well, others not so much.

Lately, I've noticed that Loew's is especially bad about this, and getting worse. It's reached the point where if I sync my Vindigo before 5 PM on Friday, I don't have movies for the weekend! And they are the only ones who are really bad about that.

I know they know what will be showing, as it's in the Weekend section. It's on their own Web site.

But I use my handspring to plan my movie viewing, especially if I'm out and about, and just decide to go to a movie. So Loew's is losing a lot of my business.

Why is this happening? What can I do?

The Going Out Gurus: That is frustrating, Petworth. I (Jen) am not sure how the Vindigo thing works, but I know we get our showtimes through a feed from an outside company. So it could be that Loews isn't sending their times to the Vindigo feed, or whoever handles the Vindigo feed is messing up and not sending those times. As for what you can do, I honestly don't know. Use the Web instead? That's about the best thing I can advise. Maybe someone who deals with Vindigo movie times will see this and take note.

Washington, DC: Hey gurus! Need a place some fellow single coworkers and I can go and chill out for happy hour tomorrow without dealing with too much V-day stuff. Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Asylum has $.50 tacos and dead cheap beers from 5-9. I guarantee you there will not be hearts and roses there. Heck, I might even go. -- Fritz

Washington, DC: Any word on the new H&M stores that are supposed to open soon in the area? I've never been to one but am dying to see what all the fuss is about. Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: The Georgetown one says Spring 2003, but don't get too excited for the selection or for opening on time. -- Maura

London late: Mash on Great Portland (near Oxford Circus) is a pretty good place for drinking till about 1:30. Brew their own beer and its a nice looking young crowd. Convenient for night buses too.

The Going Out Gurus: You're a bigger fan than I, but yes, they're also open late. -- Fritz

The Going Out Gurus: That wraps things up for this week. Thanks for your questions, and sorry we couldn't get to all of them. Now here's one final Valentine's Day tip: if you still haven't gotten a card for your sweetheart, make one out of duct tape! It's the Valentine that keeps on giving. See you next week.
