The Going Out Gurus: Rhomie-Rhome's in the house... Hello all, 'tis Thursday again and Joe, Jen, Kate, Anne, Maura and Alexa are at the ready. First of all, for all my peoples asking about New Year's events, hold tight! We admire your advance planning acumen but we can't add stuff sooner than the events are submitted. You know we won't leave you hanging, just keep checking every day. For now, try solidifying those plans for how you're going to get your turkey on. Fritz just tossed me a hot tip too, seems like Recessions might be the new cheapest happy hour in DC - $1.50 drafts, $2.50 rail drinks from 5 to close. Okay, the queue is getting deep, time to dig in.
Capitol Hill, Washington, D.C.: If you could pick any museum to visit this weekend which one would it be? The Going Out Gurus: Capitol Hill - I hope to check out the paintings of Cecily Brown at the Hirshhorn. While there, I'll take a second look at Arte Povera, one of the most compelling shows of the season. Give them a try. -- Maura
Glover Park, Washington, D.C.: I've been hearing about a new dance club opening up in Georgetown somewhere. Any insight about when and where (or is this just a rumor)? The Going Out Gurus: Well, Glover Park, the only "new" club with dancing in G'town is 1206, which took over the old Champions space last month. They have DJs on both floors, and the downstairs level, which features hip-hop (I heard, Tribe, Run DMC, etc.), usually has folks dancing. But I'm not impressed with the place yet -- It looks like Champions with the sports gear removed. Check it out and let us know what you think. -- Fritz
Washington, D.C.: I am looking for a place where about six to eight people can go for a late New Year's Eve dinner. Looking to spend less that $75/person. any suggestions? Is there a place on the Entertainment Guide that has a listing? The Going Out Gurus: Washington DC, we've just finished getting the scoop on Thanksgiving at restaurants. I don't know much yet about New Year. Can you hang on for a week when I'll know a lot more. In the meantime, though, I expect that most hotel restaurants will be celebrating. -- Alexa
Washington, DC: Really, $1.50 drafts 'till close? Sure they're not 8-ounces or something? The Going Out Gurus: I was there at happy hour last night, Washington, and I assure you they're 14 or 16-ounce mugs. (You can have a 26-ounce mug for $2.75, though.) I was talking to the owner/bartender, and he told me that it's a introductory offer; they'll probably run that special "for a few months, at least." And the menu says "Happy Hour 5 p.m. - closing" on the front, so you've got the offer in writing. -- Fritz
Alexandria, Va.: Is everyone excited about the Bond movie as I am? The Going Out Gurus: Not sure, Alexandria. Desson Howe's review of "Die Another Day" indicates it's just more recycled Bond-aphelia without anything fresh. But of course, you may beg to differ. Personally, I'm much more excited to see Nicolas Cage get back to his wacky guy roots in "Adaptation." -- Jen
Alexandria, Va.: Hey Gurus! Okay, I know that there are several restaurants offering Thanksgiving meals on the actual day of Thanksgiving, but are there any places serving or offering for take-out Thanksgiving meals this weekend? I am celebrating with my boyfriend on Saturday before I go out of town to celebrate with my family. Thanks! The Going Out Gurus: Alexandria, I saw your question and instantly thought of this. The Grill Restaurant at the Ritz-Carlton in DC is offering high-end "leftovers" the few days after Thanksgiving, for $20 per person. And don't forget that stores like Safeway etc., and maybe even Fresh Fields offer their Thanksgiving and Christmas picnics greatly reduced once the day is done. -- Alexa
chicken digits at recessions: battered and fried, with fries. good stuff. The Going Out Gurus: Yep. I had the battered and fried broccoli. Oh, wait. I forgot to mention the food specials - a selected appetizer or two is $2.50 (changes daily). It's bar food, not haute cuisine, but I had a few drinks and a snack and got out of there for under $9 (excluding tip.) -- Fritz
Washington, D.C.: Hi GoGs! My 19-year-old brother is visiting me for Thanksgiving. I thought we'd make it a non-traditional Turkey Day and head down to the Smithsonian. Any museum events that day? The quandary is what to do for lunch. Is anything besides the museum cafes open that day? Thanks a bunch. The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Washington. All the Smithsonian museums will be open that day. As for exhibits, they've got a lot to pick from: the aforementioned Hirshhorn shows, "Through My Father's Eyes" at American History, IMAX and "Sensuous and Sacred" at the Sackler. The Smithsonian Castle restaurant offers a Thanksgiving meal, but if you want to wander off-Mall, Alexa says 701's turkey treats may be a good bet -- $32 per person, I believe. -- Maura
Computer Land, Washington, D.C.: Hey Gurus! I have a friend driving into town for a medical visit around 21st and Penn, NW. Looking for a decent lunch place where we can meet that doesn't involve driving (for him) and is convenient to metro (for me). Can you help, can you help? Many thanks! The Going Out Gurus: Computerland, you could certainly have a nice lunch at Kinkead's, or a nice but extremely casual (almost fast) lunch at the Burro. There are other places, but those two I like best. -- Alexa
Fritz's beaujolais party: How was the Bistro Du Coin? See Fritz I told you you should have gone to Les Halles, you could have bumped into (no pun intnded) Wendy Reiger of NBC 4. The Going Out Gurus: Let me sum it up for you: Packed, crazy, the ketchup song, attractive women dancing on the bar, free wine flowing (and spilling) everywhere, french hip-hop, Tony Williams telling me, "This [Beaujolais Nouveau] isn't bad this year. I've had some before that was [shakes head]." I've seen Wendy out before. Kinda funny. Was she, um, behaving herself? -- Fritz
Dancing like Tony Williams: A lot of people claim to be terrible dancers. Do you think this is mostly a confidence issue or just a bunch of people with no skills? The Going Out Gurus: Hey, this is Joe and the problem isn't with people who claim to be terrible dancers. It's the people who are confident that they're great dancers and really are terrible. I happen to know I'm a lousy dancer, so I try not to subject anyone around to the pain of having to watch me dance. I wish a few more people would be as considerate.
Great Mills, Md.: My wife wants me to take her to a murder mystery dinner theater for her birthday. Do you guys know where any thing like this would be around here. Every time I look up theaters all I get is stuff like Fords Theater, National Theater. Thanks for the help! The Going Out Gurus: Take a look in the Guide to the Lively Arts in the Weekend section; there are a couple of places listed there. One is the Blair Mansion in Silver Spring. I (Jen) went to a murder mystery event there several years ago and had an enjoyable time. The group Murder Upon Request also does a regular murder mystery gig on weekends at the Arlington Hilton -- you can call 703/379-8108 to find out more. I'm sure there are other places. All you Agatha Christie-lovin' Got Plans readers, feel free to chime in.
Washington, D.C.: With college basketball season beginning, is there a list of bars that show the games? Specifically, I am looking for ACC and Wake Forest games. Thanks! The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Washington. Last season, Crystal City Sports Pub was the local ACC headquarters. I know Wake had some alumni meetups there last season, but they also ran game-watching parties at the Rock (which, sadly, closed in August). You can also try Summers or the Grand Slam Sports Bar. -- Fritz
Washington, D.C.: Looking for a nice/fancy/romantic restaurant to celebrate a special occasion with a special someone. Any thoughts? The Going Out Gurus: Washington, nice/fancy/romantic isn't much to go on, but I'll throw out some places I'd go. Neyla's always on the list, so's the Tabard. And here's our list of romantic spots generally. -- Alexa
Alexandria, Va.: All-knowing Gurus, Do you know of any James Bond-themed events this weekend to go along with the release of new movie? Thanks! The Going Out Gurus: Fritz tells me he heard that Spy Lounge might be doing something, but we're not sure what. I just called there and got the answering machine. If I hear back during the discussion, I'll give you the 411. -- Jen
Recessions: Has the bar moved? Every time I've been in there it's been empty, dark and depressing. The jukebox also sucks. There are much better places to spend a happy hour. The Going Out Gurus: Yeah. It was in the dark, dank room in the basement of the Commerce Building (1700 K), and it's now moved to a bright, well-lit basement next to Mackey's on L. (1823 L St. NW). No jukebox now. No dancefloor or all-you-can-drink nights, either. Sorry, college students. -- Fritz
Alexandria, Va.: We're going to GW to catch the filming of "Crossfire" on Wednesday, and are looking for some chill places near GW or in Georgetown to eat and drink before and after the show. Any suggestions? The Going Out Gurus: Hi Alexandria. As for before the show, I'll let you in on one of Kate and my faves -- Taberna del Alabardero. The bar is teeny-tiny, so it only works if you're a small number, but Manolo will surely treat you well. -- Maura
Adams Morgan, Washington, D.C.: Missed the Beaujolais party at Bistrot du Coin last night (bummer!) Know about anything happening tonight or over the weekend? The Going Out Gurus: Yep. Check out the party tonight at the French Embassy's La Maison Francaise. I believe they are having specials at Mon Ami Gabi in Bethesda all weekend, too. -- Fritz
Rosslyn, Va.: Any word on when the Pershing Ice Rink (Federal Triangle) will open? The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Rosslyn. The Pershing Park Ice Rink is open now and will be through mid-March. This season's hours (soon to be updated on the site) are 10 a.m. - 11 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m. to midnight Friday-Saturday and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday. -- Anne
Dear Fritz,: I must remind you that you are my D.C. drinking hero. Some in this town choose Air Jordan as their hero, nope, mine is Fritz! I look up to you. The Going Out Gurus: Awww. Thanks, Mom.
Rockville, Md.: Dear GoGs, My parents will be visiting me for Christmas. They will be here from Dec. 19-29. I am looking for ideas of fun things to do with them. In a nutshell, they love jazz and gospel music -- and do not speak English. What ideas come to your minds? The Going Out Gurus: Hi Rockville, This is Joe and I recommend taking them to Blues Alley in Georgetown or Twins on U St. Or if they're a little more adventurous, maybe HR-59 on 14th St. The language won't be a barrier, because most of these places will have artists playing instrumental jazz. As far as gospel goes, we have a list somewhere of gospel events, especially ones related to the holidays. It should be up shortly. Any one out there want to offer more suggestions.
Washington, D.C.: Quick question: Do you know of a comprehensive list of bars/restaurants that have space for private parties? I'm not looking to take over an entire bar, but it'd be nice to have an area for our group to congregate. Thanks! The Going Out Gurus: Doesn't a private party mean you take over a whole spot? I recently looked into doing one myself and the folks at Bossa will let you get the whole top floor for you and your crew, gotta negotiate the fee though. Other than that, put 'party' into the search engine and... BAM! - Rhome
Re: Basketball: Not to sound like a bitter basketball widow or anything, but have you ever been in a bar (with TVs of course) that WASN'T showing ACC games? I'd say finding a game-less bar is a way bigger challenge. The Going Out Gurus: True. Which is why I like most of the hotel bars these days -- no televisions. (And cocktails, of course.) -- Fritz
ACC Hoops: I've seen Wake alum watching hoops at the Big Hunt. I'm going to go over there this season to watch Virginia beat them. The Going Out Gurus: Okay. Have fun beating up on the Cavs. We would join you, but Rhome and I will be busy supporting the NCAA CHAMPIONS this season. -- Fritz
Washington, D.C.: So how does one get to be a GoG, anyways? Are you all hiring? The Going Out Gurus: Hey DC, this is Joe and we all got our jobs here through the prison's placement program. We get to keep them as long as we keep meeting all of our probation requirements. I don't think we're hiring unless one of us gets fired. And that could happen at any moment. In fact, I see my boss approaching my desk right now.
Kalorama, Washington, D.C.: (1) Will any theaters be showing the first "Lord of the Rings" before/while the second one comes out for those of us who missed it? (2) Any suggestions on the best museum atriums/alcoves/etc. to take a laptop to (other than National Gallery) as an alternative to working while people-watching in a cafe? (3) Fritz! We need more people to go to Bohemian Caverns for their new Tuesday Belgian beer happy hour so it doesn't get cancelled -- great atmosphere, great beer, great prices (maybe if we can pack the house they'll offer us a live band, too). Thanks GOGs! The Going Out Gurus: Hello, Kalorama. As far as I (Jen) know, theaters won't be showing "Fellowship of the Ring" prior to or concurrently with "The Two Towers." However, you can always watch it on DVD. In fact, if you get that new huge box set and start watching it this very second, you might finish before "Two Towers" comes out on the 18th. (FYI, "Lord of the Rings" people: Several local theaters are already selling advance tickets to "Two Towers." We'll have info about it on the site shortly.) As to the second part of your question, Maura suggests the Hirshhorn as a potential laptop spot. If others have ideas, please thrown 'em out there. And Fritz hears you knockin' about the happy hour, too. Thanks.
Takoma Park, Md.: I think someone asked about this a few weeks ago, but I heard the new lounge at the Washington Plaza Hotel is having some kind of party tonight. Have you heard anything about this? The Going Out Gurus: It's a new '60s/lounge/bossa nova/groove party tonight at the WP International bar, from 10 until close. I'll probably be there for a while, hoping that the bar finally has settled down and gotten its act together. Service and bartending have been pretty spotty on my visits. -- Fritz
Baltimore, Md.: Shameless plug for Sunday night's show at the 9:30 by Saint Etienne, the absolute best pop band you've never heard of. The Going Out Gurus: Hi Baltimore, Joe here. Shameless plug is ok. We're big fans of SE. Just a reminder though that this show starts late. 10 p.m. doors, I think.
Washington D.C.: I am relatively new to town, living with three guys on the hill. I'm 23 and single and want to meet fun, interesting people. The only places, bar's I've seen were the one's with the best happy hours (my roomate's suggestion's of course). Can you suggest places on the weekend where are new, single girl can meet people? The Going Out Gurus: Um... anywhere the music is good and fits your style/tastes. What are you into? I always answer questions like these by telling people to wander about areas (like Adams Morgan) that have a lot going on and poke your head into anywhere the vibe reaches out to you. Be adventurous! Try just going out without a plan and seeing where the evening takes you. Off the top I can tell you to try out Aroma, it's quite the mingle-fest with nice tunes, great libations and no pick-up sleaze, even though folks are trying to meet people. Just my opinion of the place, I'm not a lady though so I haven't been hit on. - Rhome
Centreville, Va.: Are there still any stands open where you can buy farm pumpkins and apples, or did they mostly close after Halloween? The Going Out Gurus: Because the growing season is over, many of the farms are closed or taking a breather before they reopen for Christmas tree sales. But Burke Nursery and Garden Centre, 9401 Burke Rd., Burke, 703/323-1188 is still open with pumpkins and apples. Potomac Vegetable Farm (four miles west of Tysons Corner on Route 7, 703/759-2119) is open Sunday afternoons only in November, selling apples, swwet potatoes and squash. -- Anne
I'm Thrifty: Hi! I want to go thrift store shopping this Sunday. Will places be open? I keep hearing about this Meeps place, Where is it? Any other recommendations? Thanks! The Going Out Gurus: Thrifty, Meeps -- at 15th and U -- will be open Sunday as will Secondi. Check out our complete list right here. Not sure exactly what you're looking for, but hope one fits. -- Maura
9:30 Club?: Hey, I was wondering what your thoughts were on Galactic, the band playing this weekend at the 9:30 Club? What type of vibe do they put out? Good show? Thanks! The Going Out Gurus: All I know is that they're a jam band and Joe doesn't like jam bands so he passed this on to me. I know Trouble Funk is also playing too so that's reason enough to go. Comments from the class? - Rhome
Washington, D.C.: To the private party questioner: Check out Aroma in Cleveland Park. They'll let you reserve their back room (no fee!), but you'll have to give it up after about 10 p.m. or so. Good way to gather friends together, though. The Going Out Gurus: Yep, yep.
Holiday Hair Help: Not sure if this is the right chat for my question, but I was thinking someone might be able to point me in the right direction. I need a hair stylist who is good with up-dos in the Bethesda, Rockville, Chevy Chase, Md., area. I have a black tie party to go to and need a swanky up-do to go along with it, but I need a recommendation first. The Going Out Gurus: Hey, holiday hair. I (Jen) recommend making an appointment at Jolie in Bethesda with a woman named Taryn. She did my up-do for my wedding -- took me somewhat last minute because my original stylist was a dud, and did a fantastic job despite the fact that I was a nervous wreck while sitting in her chair. I know some Got Plans readers have had Jolie issues in the past, but on the up-do front, I think Taryn will hook ya.
Holiday help, please!?: Gurus: I know this might seem a bit obscure, but I'm hoping you can help me. I'm trying to find D.C.-related holiday cards. Something hip, fun, creative, and not homey or trite (photo of the White House/ Capitol building covered in snow). I've checked the Smithsonian shop online (too religious) and the Building Museum but haven't had any luck. Do you have any idea where I might be able to find some well designed D.C. related holiday cards? Thank you SO much for any leads! You guys rock. The Going Out Gurus: HHP, I haven't been scouting holiday cards quite yet, but try some smaller museums like the Corcoran and the Phillips. Lots of non-profits create holiday cards and local ones may carry a Washington theme. Start calling some of your favorite charities and find out. -- Maura
Washington, D.C.: Am suddenly faced with spending Turkey week alone in D.C. -- boyfriend sent on a last minute business trip, and I REFUSE to face traffic/airports. Any suggestions for keeping a 30-something gal busy and entertained in the District? Have thought of volunteering on Thanksgiving day, but would also like to capitalize on the virtually deserted city to check out some great museums, singles-friendly bars, etc. The Going Out Gurus: Lucky you, D.C. This is the time to go to the movies, the museums, the bookshops -- and just chill out. I like to go to movies by myself -- no chompy popcorn eating, you get to sit where you want to sit. Pick a flick that your boyfriend wouldn't, maybe "Far from Heaven" or "Real Women Have Curves" both easy diversions you can enjoy while flying solo. Museums are easy for one too: the Pierre Bonnard show at the Phillips or Arte Povera at the Hirshhorn. There are a host of excellent new cookbooks this season -- browse the shelves at your favorite big bookstore and make holiday gifts -- or follow Kim O'D's forth-coming biscotti recipe with her step-by-step video. If you'd like to volunteer, call DC Cares (202/298-7378) and they'll hook you up. If you'd like to treat yourself to a drink afterward, head to bartender who'll treat you like gold, like one of these? -- Kate
The Going Out Gurus: Um... excuse me for a minute please... TERPS, FOOL!!! WHUTWHUTWHUT!!??!!! Thank you, we now return you to your regularly scheduled chat. - Rhome
The Going Out Gurus: Here is my big list of places where you can reserve a room for a private party. -- Fritz
Washington, D.C.: The Written Word or The Chocolate Moose might have interesting holiday cards. They may or may not be D.C.-related but they are definitely interesting. The Going Out Gurus: Yes, Washington. I like Periwinkle too.
Washington, D.C.: What's the lingo for ordering a glass of whiskey in a bar? Does it involve singles, doubles, fingers? The Going Out Gurus: I just say "Whisky (or name of brand), rocks." That usually works. "Fingers" is usually just in detective/police novels. -- Fritz
Washington, D.C.: All this time I thought Rhome was a girl. Like "Rhome and Michelle's High School Reunion." The Going Out Gurus: Dag... either I had some sort of air of mystery surrounding me or I'm just not asserting my masculinity enough. Is everyone laughing at me behind my back?!? The 'e' is silent by the way, like the 'h'. - Rhome
Washington, D.C.: Hello Gurus! Please help -- I need to plan brunch on Sunday for four hip ladies in their late 20s/early 30s. We are looking for a place on Capital Hill -- I have been to Bistro Bis and wanted to try something new. Any suggestions? Thanks. The Going Out Gurus: Your best bet after Bis girls is Montmartre, a sweet little French bistro. Granted it will be more lunchy than brunchy, but expect to see a quiche, an omelette etc. on the day's list. -- Alexa
Graham Webb International Academy of Hair: Has anyone ever been here? I'm going for highlights ($25 partial, $40 full) and I want to know what I'm in for. I used to go to Vidal Sassoon Academy in London when I was there as a student; is it like this? Or is it like Hair Cuttery and I will walk out of there in tears (been there)? I've only been to Elizabeth Arden for highlights around here (I beg, borrow, and steal the money in order to go twice a year) so that is sort of the "standard" I am using as a premise. Help please? Anyone? Thanks. The Going Out Gurus: Haven't been. But can tell you that our server at Local 16 last week works there. A friend complemented her on her cut and highlights and she gave us the skinny. Sounds like a great deal to me. I don't remember her name, but, if you care, contact me at maura.mccarthy@washingtonpost.com and I'll find out.
Bethesda, MD: Hi GOGs! Any fun festivals (indoor or outdoor) to hit out in the suburbs (MD or VA) this Sunday? I have a friend coming into town and we've got some time to kill Sunday before her flight back. Thanks! The Going Out Gurus: Hi Bethesda. A lot of the festival-y events are Saturday this weekend, but Sunday from noon-5 there's a Jewish Folk Arts festival at the University of Maryland - Shady Grove campus. You can catch a shuttle from Shady Grove Metro. It's $15 to get in for the ethnic food, klezmer music and workshops. Or, you can be crafty at the Sugarloaf Festival, which ends for the season Sunday. I (Anne) must also recommend Art-o-Matic for your festivaling needs. It's not suburban, but it is an adventure.
Re: Les Halles Beaujolais: Yea Fritz, she was behaving herself, unfortunately. I was gonna wave her over to our table when she was hanging with the WTOP dude, then she left. But damn good steak, fries, and salad that I had for dinner! The Going Out Gurus: And I missed all the madness too, I must live the beaujolais vicariously through this chat. Who's got more dirt to dish? - Rhome
Murder Mystery: The one at Dave and Buster's at White Flint is lots of fun! You can also win a Power Card! The Going Out Gurus: Well, okay, but willingly going to Dave and Buster's in the mall, is a bit of a mystery to me.
Rockville, Md.: Hi, I was wondering if you had any information on the swing dancing at That's Amore in Rockville. A friend of mine says that have dance contests there. What's the cover, how's the floor, what's the ratio of leaders to followers, who's the DJ/band? The Going Out Gurus: That's interesting. I could be wrong, but I think they're confusing That's Amore (Wednesdays, no cover, small floor, James Bazen big band) with Timpano Italian Chophouse (third Thursday of the month, no cover, large floor, Radio King Orchestra, dance lessons with Marc and Ellen, regular dance contests). -- Fritz
Washington, D.C.: Do you know of a safe bar in College Park one can watch the NCAA CHAMPIONS burn down their campus after losing to Duke this year? Thanks! The Going Out Gurus: Probably the front deck at the Cornerstone. Good view, centrally located at the intersection of Knox Road and Route 1. Best draft beer selection in College Park, too. -- Fritz
Go 'Hoos!: Down with the Terps. If I have to read another front sports page Washington Post story about how some Terps athelete got a paper cut and can't play, while Virginia is off beating the No. 1 team in the nation again with barely any press coverage, I will vomit -- directly on the paper. The Going Out Gurus: Enjoy vomiting. Seriously, Wahoo, you can't fault the Post for covering the Terps. For God's sake, we Maryland fans have walked through the valley of darkness for hundreds of years waiting for decent teams. Let us enjoy the fact that our teams rock, and quit your bellyaching. Oh, in addition to being a Terps fan, I'm also a William & Mary alum. And we don't take kindly to complaining Cavaliers. It doesn't reflect well on Mr. Thomas Jefferson. He went to William & Mary, and then I think he founded some other university ... what was it, again? (Now I'm really gonna get it.) -- Jen
Washington, D.C.: Galactic is actually one of the best shows around. They are a New Orleans style jazz funk fusion type of thing. They are kind of a jam band but not in the typical "Phish" sense. I would highly suggest going. The Going Out Gurus: One vote of confidence for Galactic. Speaking of New Orleans funk, here's a tip since I just saw this cat recently and he seems to have a following. - Rhome
Bethesda, Md.: Hi, I've been traveling all this week and will be returning home this Friday. What exciting events are happening in the D.C. area that are worth checking out? The Going Out Gurus: Depends what thrills you, Beth: Get your flashdance on at Tequila Grill's "Giant '80s Bash" or tuck into the long-standing late night steak/frites special at Bistro Francais. Alternatively, dry clean your black t'neck and head to the 9:30 on Sunday night for Saint Etienne's shushed synthy pop. Too shushed? Peter Gabriel (and his white weirdy beardy) at MCI, also Sunday. -- Kate
Alexandria, Va.: Who cares how good the Bond movie is? I just want to sit and stare at Pierce Brosnan for two hours. Can't beat a hunky Irishman (and yes, he's Irish, not English, thank God). The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Alexandria, no one's blaming you. I (Jen) have a feeling plenty of people will pony up the cash to stare at Ms. Halle Berry for a couple of hours, too.
Pentagon City, Va.: Friends coming in from all over the country this weekend. Trying to figure out where to take them. All are early 20s and work in the entertainment industry. I haven't seen them for a while so we want some place in the District where we can sit and talk or dance if we want to. 18th Street Lounge/Dragonfly/Red -- suggestions? The Going Out Gurus: Sounds like you got the right ones already. I'd have said those unless you put in some other details. - Rhome
Arlington, Va.: I have a group of friends coming in for a wedding in Richmond then Saturday night in D.C. They're coming from New York and L.A. and are some of my dearest friends so I really want to show them a good time. I was thinking about going to 18th St and hitting up the variety of establishments that are in walking distance of one another. I've done that with great results, but it was on a Thursday so I don't know how packed they are on a Saturday or what the covers would be. Any insight? The Going Out Gurus: It can be done. Just GO EARLY. The 'hood gets packed on weekends. Chief Ike's, Felix/Spy Lounge and the Blue Room are the only spots that are free on Thursday night but have covers on the weekends. -- Fritz
Washington, D.C.: I'm looking to try a new sushi happy hour. Have been to Cafe Asia. Wondering whether anyone has anything to say about either Uni or Benkay. The Going Out Gurus: Haven't been to Benkay, but I'm an occasional regular at Uni. I think it's the best sushi happy hour around. $1 nigiri, cheap rolls and $3 Kirin and sake martinis. -- Fritz
Area Crafting Groups?: Love the discussions, GOGs! Question on crafting: I'm a late-20s woman who has discovered the joys of needlework -- cross-stitch, crocheting, knitting, but it seems like I'm the only one my age who is into it. Surely this can't be so! Are there any 21st-century equivalents of quilting/sewing bees or groups I could join to get tips, exchange patterns, and engage in a little female bonding? I want to bust that stereotype that crafters are middle-aged or elderly and spend their time making irrelevant items like tea cozies or dog clothes. Any insights? The Going Out Gurus: Yes folks, let's get away from brunches, booze, and booty shaking for a sec and delve into some other leisure possibilities. I know a young lady who makes the flyest knit caps, bags, scarves and other accessories, even business card holders (I'm going to get her to hook me up for this coming winter) so you're not the only non-grandmotherly crafter about. I'll ask her how she hooks up with fellow needle jockeys and also throw this one out to the group now. - Rhome
Arlington, Va.: What's the scoop on the midnight movie at Visions on Saturday nights? A friend and I are heading there after Art-O-Matic (per Kate's suggestion, we're going to try and find the secret party room) and have never been. Is the movie crowded? (This week it's "Animal House.") What's the deal with the keg -- does it empty out quickly? Any suggestions? The Going Out Gurus: Fat, drunk, and stupid is no way to go through life, son. But don't take Dean Wormer's advice, take mine: "Kick the Keg" at Visions is a kick and a half. It's ten bucks, 21+ only, and the sign don't lie: it's unlimited beers until the keg which is rolled into the theater is kicked. There will be plenty, or rather, there is usually plenty, but with "Animal House" comes the "Animal House" crowd. The movie can be crowded -- buy tickets in advance and have a (kegless) beer in the lounge beforehand. -- Kate
Arlington, Va.: A friend from Australia is coming on Friday, and he's never seen D.C. before. We're planning to spend the day doing touristy stuff, which will probably mean a walk around the Mall to see the monuments, and then what? Have any suggestions of new exhibits? Sites that aren't on the "typical tourist" platter? A good restaurant for lunch? A pub for drinks? Think cheap, within Metro distance, and fun! Thanks, Gurus! The Going Out Gurus: Arlington, sounds like you've got the top spots down. As for exhibits Arte Povera, Pierre Bonnard and Trompe L'Oeil are some of your best bets. Off the typical tourist platter, check out our "You haven't lived here..." roundup. Good restaurants near the Mall include Teaism, Jaleo, Zaytinya. Also near the Mall, for cheap beers, District Chophouse has plenty at happy hour, if a less than pleasing atmosphere. Or head up to the Hill and dive into the Tune Inn. Hope you both have fun. -- Maura
Washington, D.C.: Hey gurus! Any word on the 2 skinnee J's concert this weekend at Dream? Do you have to buy tickets in advance or will you get to see the band for the usual cover? Thanks, y'all rock! The Going Out Gurus: Hey, D.C. I see you can't deny the irresistable force, either. As we both know, it's the Js (and this barbecue) that truly will rock. They'll be performing songs from their new album on the main floor, starting around 10:30. I (Anne) will see you there. If you go to the Dream Web site and sign up for the guest list, you can get in free until 11. If not, it's a $10 cover. Bring it on, bring it on, bring it on.
Washington, D.C.: Does anyone know where you can buy Hanger One vodka? I've seen it at all the Kimpton Hotels, but yet have to find it in a liquor store. That stuff rocks. Also digging the Hendricks gin. The Going Out Gurus: That's the best flavored vodka on the market, so you'd figure it would be easy to find. But noooo. Try Ace Beverage on New Mexico Avenue NW, says Rachel Sergi, the manager at Bar Rouge. (She got me hooked on Hanger One earlier this year when she was working at Toka Cafe.) The distributor in Washington is Wine Bow, if you want your local liquor store to order some for you. As for Hendricks .... mmmmmmmm. -- Fritz
Capitol Hill, Washington, D.C.: My husband and I checked out Poste last weekend and had a great time. We're now inspired to check out some other new bars. Is there a great lounge-y bar where you can actually sit down and have a conversation without yelling? Here's what we're looking for: great drinks, comfortable atmosphere, reasonable noise level. The Going Out Gurus: A quick and varied three-fer: Rendezvous (can get kinda loud on weekends though), Staccato, Helix - Rhome
Washington, D.C.: Just moved to D.C. from Connecticut and I am afraid I will miss all the UCONN basketball games (both men's and women's) this season. Any clue as to where I can catch them in the city or in Arlington? Thanks -- Go Huskies! The Going Out Gurus: Don't worry, D.C. All your fellow Huskies will be gathering at the Grand Slam Sports Bar in the Grand Hyatt downtown and Grevey's Sports Bar in Fairfax. (Women's games are only at Grand Slam.) -- Fritz
Dupont, Washington D.C. -- YOU GUYS ROCK!: Gurus, Any idea where I can catch Duende Cameron, that fab guitar quartet that used to play at the Chi Cha Lounge on Monday nights? Apparently they don't do so anymore. Love da chat. The Going Out Gurus: I heard that they're now performing on weekends at Cafe Salsa in Old Town Alexandria. -- Fritz
Washington, D.C.: Hello everybody, What are some good good jazz joints for hanging out at the bar (not at a table like stodgy effetes), with a good scene of attractive people. Twins jazz, Bohemian? Dish it to me crazy. The Going Out Gurus: I've been seeing whole crews of ridiculously fine women at U-topia as of late. Are you paying attention chatter from Maryland Suburbs? Nice grub, fly atmosphere, good music, laid-back and cozy. - Rhome
Petworth, Washington, D.C.: Try to Library of Congress gift shop, or the Smithsonian's gift shop in the castle for those D.C.-themed holiday cards. Or the Trover Shop on Capitol Hill sometimes has them too. The Going Out Gurus: Our friend had no luck at the Smithsonian, but LOC and Trover are fine ideas. Thanks.
Caps Fan: Is there any place near MCI to get a bite before the game that doesn't have a line out the door? The Going Out Gurus: Not really. You might try the bar menu at the Hotel Monaco's Poste, though. Not too pricey (like $8-10 for burgers or steak frites), but seating in the bar is limited. -- Fritz
I'm right behind you, Jen: I'm a William and Mary Alum married to a RABID Terp. Gator Bowl anyone? The Going Out Gurus: See, that's what you have to love about the Tribe. No matter what you say, there's an alumnus out there who's got your back. And I'm married to a Terp, too, my friend. -- Jen
801 Penn: For the person interested in knitting, I saw a sign tacked up in the Penn Quarter Teaism that mentioned a knitting group. I'm not sure if it's still there, but if you go and check out the things tacked up on the wall, perhaps you'll find it. The Going Out Gurus: Worth a try. I know internet newsgroups and message boards are a good source too. You're bound to find folks in the immediate area. - Rhome
Washington, D.C.: For holiday hair help she should try Paula at PR and Partners in Bethesda. She did my sister's hair in an up-do -- a very original take but still classy and pretty. The Going Out Gurus: Another suggestion -- thanks, D.C.
Re: Good brunch: You might not think about it when you first think BRUNCH, but Mezze has an excelent brunch. I took a 20-person group there, got the entire top floor, and enjoyed really good, very well priced food. To top it off, we all had loads of bloodies and mimosas. They added in the large group gratuity of 18 percent I think and you know what it cost us all? Only $13 a piece! After great food and tons of Sunday morning liquid happiness. Highly recommend it. The Going Out Gurus: That's what I'm talking about. We can dig it. - Rhome
Cleveland Park, Washington, D.C.: Headed out with two girlfriends (all of us in our late 20s) Saturday night to celebrate one's holiday return from the biz school grind. We're starting at Cafe Citron, and usually wind up at Lucky Bar, 18th Street Lounge, or Madam's Orga. I am DESPERATE for a new suggestion (not for Citron, though; I'm always happy to hang out there). Thoughts? The Going Out Gurus: Try walking in the other direction, Cleveland Park. Maybe Firefly, Savino's, Kramerbooks (the bar is usually happening on Saturday), Biddy Mulligan's, Gazuza and Bistrot du Coin? -- Fritz
Washington, D.C.: I would add Helix to the list for the person who has the entertainment friends coming in to town. Spacious, funky and the changing wall colors make people's moods go kind of wild. Was there last week and never experienced anything like that in a D.C. bar. No, I wasn't on anything either. The Going Out Gurus: More field reports. Keep 'em coming. - Rhome
NCAA Champions: NCAA Champions NCAA Champions NCAA Champions. Keep saying it - it's the first and last time you'll ever be able to make that claim. I just can't wait to beat up on the Terps at Scott Stadium this weekend. The Going Out Gurus: We were NCAA champions in basketball. This weekend's game is football. So I'm failing to see the connection here. Come on now, UVA, you're smart enough to know that. Unless your grades were inflated. (I kid because I love. My brother went to UVA, so I have some respect. Some.) -- Jen
Government Tool: Hey Guys, I remember hearing a while back there was a Ethiopian food hall on U Street that had good DJs playing there on Friday nights. Can you refresh my short-term memory? The Going Out Gurus: That was, um, D.C.'s Finest, on like 9th and U? 10th and U? Anyway, Rhome and I are pretty certain they've stopped doing DJ nights. Sorry. What about Fasika's? They have both on the weekends. -- Fritz
Re: Vomiting on the Post: And while I'm a WVU alumn (he he he...you chokey Hokies) I totally understand why the 'Terps are front and center on the Post all the time and THE University is not. College Park is a wee bit closer to DC than Charlottesville is. The Post is essentially the 'Terps local paper. Now if you want to vomit on something, let's vomit on the fact that Starbucks is coming to Adams Morgan! The Going Out Gurus: Well-put. There are plenty of UVA fans and alums here, but the Post is the Terps' paper. Bottom line. And I think I speak for all of us when I say that there's enough vomit in this world. Let's be a force for change and avoid barfing on both newspapers and establishments that sell lattes. -- Jen
Blacksburg, Va.: This is completely off topic, but the arguing between Terps and Wahoos (or any other ACC teams) is humoring me. Anyway, all the anti-wahoo's out there may appriciate this: www.bwmb.org -- the wahoo pep band is auctioning themselves off on ebay, and the hokies are trying to buy them. The Going Out Gurus: All team rivalries aside, that is pretty darn funny, Blacksburg.
D.C. Holiday Cards: Both Barnes & Noble and Borders have D.C.-themed holiday cards (for ex -- picture of the Capitol covered in snow, etc.). The Going Out Gurus: More help from the class coming through.
Dupont Circle, Washington, D.C.: Going out tonight around Arlington with friends. Thinking of dinner and then maybe Clarendon Ballroom. Any suggestions for a restaurant within walking distance? Preferably a steak and potatoes kind of place. Or anywhere else in the area to dance? The Going Out Gurus: Well, there's not much in that neighborhood for steak and potatoes (we'd send you down to Ray's the Steaks, between Court House and Rosslyn). Your best bets there are Vietnamese, chili (Hard Times Cafe) or general Americana (Whitlow's on Wilson). Joe also likes the food at Iota. As for dancing, there's a band at Clarendon Grill tonight, so that might be an option. Nowhere else, really. -- Fritz
Re: D.C.-themed holiday cards: I found some great holiday cards at Eastern Market a few Sundays ago. The two options were -- Eastern Market with snow and the Capitol with snow and kids sledding, etc. Super cute, and a good price. The Going Out Gurus: Local artist?
Re: Area crafting groups: To the 20-something crafter - you're not alone! I'm 25 and like to knit/crochet...whenever I get supplies I'm always surrounded by these granny types at the craft store and I'd like to break this mold. Gurus - if you find out info on any such groups, please post on this thread. Thanks! The Going Out Gurus: Just because crafts folk can come from all age groups doesn't mean we don't have love for grannies. A granny scarf is always warmer anyway, they put extra love in them. - Rhome
Washington, D.C.: Any recommendations for non-smoking bar areas? I go out a few or more nights a week and sometimes it feels like I still smoke. I enjoy Poste, Soussi, the Brick, Marx, anywhere cool and comfy. Thanks! The Going Out Gurus: Hmmmm. Well, non-smoking bars are hard to come by. Try Chez Antoine in Adams Morgan, which is non-smoking, or the Lost Dog cafe in Arlington. The bar at the Sports Club L.A. is non-smoking, but I don't really think it's all that comfy. -- Fritz
Mclean, Va.: I will be entertaining a 16-year-old girl, a 13-year-old girl, and a 11-year-old boy this weekend. What's going on in D.C., Virginia, etc., that could possibly entertain them? Ideas, suggestions, etc., are greatly appreciated! The Going Out Gurus: Hi, McLean. Anne here, putting my teenager hat on. Here's a couple ideas: get advance tickets for the Spy Museum, or get them to visit an art museum: the Corcoran Gallery -- you can get a deal with the "family" admission. I bet the girls will get a kick out of Judith Leiber's beaded handbags, and Joan Miro's primary-colored sculptures have an easy appeal for almost anyone. I'd also recommend the Renwick Gallery up the street; George Catlin and His Indian Gallery is also very accessible. I bet your young friends are intrigued by the details of jewelry and decoration in the portraits, the artifacts of weapons and a lacrosse stick, as well as the adventurous spirit that led Catlin to explore the West and be a primary advocate for national parks. The street hockey games going on between the Renwick and the White House are a free attraction. Follow up by walking up the street to Dupont for hot drinks -- the older girls may enjoy people-watching. The bribe (if needed) for all that culture: let them loose amid Georgetown shopping or score tickets for Bond on opening weekend.
Washington, D.C.: My roommates and I live up in Glover Park near Austin Grill, Busara, etc. We would love to have a bar to just hang out at in the area, but the Grog and Tankard (often with a cover) seems to be the only bar between Georgetown and the Zebra Lounge. Any reason there are so many restaurants but still no good place to just grab a drink or two? Are we missing something? The Going Out Gurus: Nope. I like the bars at Heritage India and Busara, but there's no real bar around there. Just gentlemen's clubs. -- Fritz
Washington, D.C.: "Just my opinion of the place, I'm not a lady though so I haven't been hit on. -- Rhome " Funny, all this time of reading this chat I thought you were a chick. The Going Out Gurus: I hope you're in the minority.
Adams Morgan: I don't want to give out her phone number on the Internet, but Mary Belcher is a local artist who does awesome water colors of DC and the neighborhoods (I've actually got several of Adams Morgan in my apartment) and I know the last time we talked she was working on holiday cards. She's at Eastern Market on Sundays. There are lots of other artists at Eastern Market who will have holiday cards...just know that they will probably be a bit more expensive than the generic card store kind The Going Out Gurus: It's all good though, you get what you pay for. Support local artists! - Rhome
Washington, D.C.: Hi, I heard that Badlands is now named Apex. Is it still the same club? Is it still fun? Thanks! The Going Out Gurus: It's pretty much still the same place, Washington. Still has the video lounge, still has a huge dance floor, still does liquid ladies, still 18 and over. Not really sure about the name change, as it still has the same owner. -- Fritz
Arlington, Va.: Though I'm of no relation to Mrs. Robinson, I'd like to know of any 18 and up places where gals in their mid-20s would feel comfortable going. My 19-year-old bro will be town Saturday night, and we want take him out. It doesn't matter if we go dancing or someplace to chill, as long as he can go home with some good stories (and I can possibly get some blackmail on him). Any suggestions? The Going Out Gurus: Check our list of Where to go when you're under 21, but, sadly, you're not going to be able to take him many places that aren't huge dance clubs. Good luck. -- Fritz
Boo hoo wahoo: How many UVA students does it take to screw in a light bulb? One. One to hold the bulb and the world to revolve around them to screw it in. Ahahhahaha. The Going Out Gurus: And what's the deal with wearing blazers and ties to football games? Weird. And on that note, we're out. Terps represent. Check y'all out next week.
