Got plans? Great. Need plans? Just ask. We have the skinny on the bars and clubs, concerts, kitchens, theaters and special events that keep life interesting. We're going out gurus, and we're at your service. Of course, we're happy to answer questions about local entertainment, but we need to hear from you, too. Introduce us to the coolest DJ or the fastest bartender you've encountered. Sound off on the week's best concert or the city's best burger. Tell us about the best place to amuse little kids or a big art fan. Together we can plan fun ways to spend weekdays, weekends, dates and holidays. The pleasure is ours, and yours. Each week a different guru will act as host or hostess, but the entire staff is at your service. If you're looking for more ideas, see the Entertainment Guide. The Going Out Gurus: I just had the strangest dream, and you were in it ... As you can see, friends, we've decorated the Entertainment Guide for the holidays. In addition to our Holiday Guide (the Mall of America of recipies, events, decorating tips, discussions, gift ideas), Maura has prepared what is fast becoming her annual specialty: the slide show and video (starring Barney Bush) of the White House decorations. And get a load of her tour guide! The whole fam-damn-ily is here today: Rhome, Jen, Maura, Joe, Alexa, Anne, Fritz and me, Kate. Ask all you want about holiday theater, museums, movies, New Year's Eve parties. And of course, we're always happy to tailor your weekend. What are you looking for, fruit cakes?
North of Farragut: Our department is having a holiday lunch next Thursday. Looking for a fun place that takes reservations (our party will be about a dozen). Budget is not to restrictive, but definitely nicely under 50 per person. Any suggestions? The Going Out Gurus: It's a pity you couldn't go for an early dinner at Butterfield 9 where, for $48 a head, you can sup on holiday treats from Queen Victoria's times -- goose, figgy pud etc. How festive is that. Firefly might hold you all and be fun. They even have a private room, if a bit pokey. -- Alexa
U Streeter: I'm looking to put together a small, laid back pre-Christmas outing for a group of friends. Can you tell me a little more about the Washington Improv Theater's holiday show? Is there a bar at the DCAC? Do performances usually sell-out? Basically, do you think it is worth the $10? Thanks! The Going Out Gurus: Hi, U Streeter. I'm not sure how often performances sell out, but Anne tells me that Washington Improv is fantastic, so it sounds like it's more than worth the $10. Don't think there's a bar at the Arts Center, but they may serve wine or other beverages at the performance. If you really need to know for sure, call and ask: 202/462-7833. Otherwise, you could always get drinks after the show since you'll be steps away from a gazillion bars. Have a great time. -- Jen
Washington, DC: My friend and I are planning to celebrate the end of exams with a nice dinner next week. We have it narrowed down to Nora and Georgia Brown's. What do you think of these two restaurants? Thanks! The Going Out Gurus: Why have you narrowed it down to these? Are you up for other suggestions?
Washington, DC: Hi Going Out Gurus -- my lawschool pals and I are in need of your advice. We'd like to host a Sunday brunch for our families (about 60-70 people) the morning of our graduation in May 2003. Do you know of any restaurants etc. in the city that would accomodate us -any small restaurants on the Hill or Dupont that would let us reserve their whole space? Any thoughts from readers who have done the same? The Going Out Gurus: Good for you for planning ahead, D.C. For starters, take a look at this feature on private dining spots. I know the title refers to rehearsal dinners, but the restaurants mentioned can accommodate any type of private party, and there are several in D.C. that might appeal to you. This list is by no means all-inconclusive, of course, so I'm sure there are plenty of other places to consider, too. Chatters, anyone care to help our soon-to-be law degree-holding friend?
Georgetown, Washington, D.C.: Going to Les Mis next Wednesday and want to grab a bite before the show, any suggestions other than what's listed on the site? Any new restaurants near the National Theater? The Going Out Gurus: Chef Geoff's has just opened another branch right around the corner. Fancy the sound of that?
Warming by the fireplace: In response to last weeks list of restraunts that had fireplaces, I feel you've missed a great place by forgetting Stardust in Old Town Alexandria. We went there the first time this past Friday, the food was excellent and the two fireplaces and starry sky painted on the ceiling made it become a unique eating experience. I loved it and would definatly go back. They will also write a special message in chalk on the sidewalk in front, perfect for a birthday, anniversary or if you have a guest in town. The Going Out Gurus: Right-e-o.
The Hill: I'm looking for a specialty beer shop where I can buy one or two bottles of Belgian beer to put in my brother's stocking this year. I thought there was a place in Courthouse, but I can't find it anymore. Any ideas? The Going Out Gurus: Hello, Hill. My favorite place to pick up large bottles of Delirium Noel (the holiday version of Delirium Tremens) and Chimay Grand Reserve is near Courthouse -- the Fresh Fields on Wilson Blvd. But I also buy my Belgian beers at several other places, including Fresh Fields in Vienna, which has a great selection and knowledgeable staff, and the old standby: Chevy Chase Wine and Spirits, the best place to buy beer in D.C. Period. -- Fritz
Washington, DC: Hi Gurus! It's a friend's bday today and we're taking her out w/ "the girls" tonight. She requested somewhere w/ fun dining, drinks, and dancing. We're thinkink Cafe Citron. would that work or any other ideas? Preferably in the Dupont, Farragut, Adams Morgan area. THANKS! The Going Out Gurus: Hi Washington. I think Citron should suit you well. Another option for dancing might be Habana Village. Have fun. -- Maura
20007: Hello hep cats, I'm looking for a place to play darts.. upper NW preferred. 4 Ps is ok but lacking in atmosphere. I used to go to Atomic, but the clientele seem a little... strange for my taste. But I loved everything else about it, jukebox, drinks, tenders. Anything along those lines where I won't be the only non-regular, and I don't have to get in the middle of drunken college kids romantic entanglements? Thanks. The Going Out Gurus: Hello 20007, this is Joe and first I have to point out that when you said you loved the tenders at Atomic, Alexa thought you were talking about chicken tenders. I'm pretty sure you mean bartenders. Help settle that for us. As for darts, have you tried Buffalo Billiards in Dupont? Also, I remember going to a great place on Colorado near 14th St NW next to the old location for Twins Lounge. The name is escaping me right now, but it was a serious dart place. I'll try to think of it before the hour's up.
Del Ray, VA: Hi, I'm planning to stand in line tomorrow for tickets to the Messiah sing-along at the Kennedy Center. Does anyone know how early I should get there, and how quickly the line moves once it opens at 10 am? Thanks!! The Going Out Gurus: Button up, Del Ray. Some people get in line for tickets as early as 6 a.m. (Think thermoses, lawn chairs, and early Friday night bedtimes -- ruining the idea of getting there at 9:55 a.m.) If you're serious about getting in to this terrific concert (and I highly recommend that you go, if only this once), get in line by at least 9 a.m. Once the ticket counter opens (at 10), then the line snakes inside, where at least it's warm. There are few places to sit. Bring a book or a walkman or be prepared to talk to your neighbor. Oh, it's only two tickets per-person, and beware of the self-imposed "line" police, there's at least one every few feet. I do my best to ignore them. -- Kate
Alexandria, VA: I am not able to "go home" for Christmas this year, and would like to use my time to volunteer. Can you recommend any organizations who could use an extra hand on Christmas day? The Going Out Gurus: Very generous of you, Alexandria! The program that jumps to my mind is the DCJCC's community service project on Dec. 25. They have 62 activities you can choose from. If you're interested in keeping that volunteer spirit going, check our Holiday Guide. On the lower right side of the page, put your mouse over the Community section. It's full of organizations that would like your help. -- Anne
Rockville, Md.: I have read on here about a movie theater that is in MoCo or NW that has liquor, leather seats, etc. My mom is coming next weekend and this sounds just up our alley! Something to do after brunch on a Sunday! THANKS for your help ALWAYS! The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Rockville. I believe you are thinking of the AMC Mazza Gallerie's Club Cinema in Friendship Heights, which does have leather seats and alcoholic drinks at its private snack bar. Unfortunately, as far as I know, the theater only screen films in the evening. So you might have to make it a nighttime activity instead. It's definitely a nice treat for a special occasion, but prepare to drop some dough. The last time I saw a movie at "The Club" it cost $13.
Alexandria: First of all, I would like to thank the Post's Paul Farhi, for his article pointing out how wimpy Washingtonians are when it comes to winter weather. It can be pretty pathetic at times! Also, I wanted to know where I can get a good, non-traditional brunch in the VA or DC area. I want more than omlette stations and blintzes - I want something exotic! Can you help me? The Going Out Gurus: Alexandria, the fattest, most exotic brunch in town might be the suckling pig brunch at Gabriel. It runs around $50 per person, I think. Otherwise, also exotic are Cafe Atlantico's Latin dim sum brunch, the brunches at both the Bombay Club and Heritage India. -- Alexa
Rosslyn: Everyone in DC seems to poo-poo the rasied dougnut, especially the KK variety--as if it were dropped like manna unto Washingtonians or something. What gives? Gimme a good place to get a cake doughnut!! The Going Out Gurus: I don't like cake doughnuts so I don't pay attention. Let's ask the dough nuts at home.
FL lover!: Hope to see everyone at Joe Theismann's to watch Florida kick some Maryland butt on Saturday! GO GATORS!! The Going Out Gurus: Mother, is that you?
Exam dinner:: Georgia Brown is waaay overpriced for what youget, as is Nora. Go to Al Tiramisu for the same prices but much better quality and atmosphere! The Going Out Gurus: Some advice coming in.
Bethesda, MD: Hey guys, thanks for being here. Love the chats. My little brother turns 21 Friday and we're going to celebrate in Adams Morgan. Can you suggest some good bars (maybe some that would impress him) We'll be with a group of about 15 people. Thanks! The Going Out Gurus: Sorry, Bethesda, I'm going to have to say your idea isn't a great one. FIFTEEN PEOPLE on a FRIDAY NIGHT in ADAMS MORGAN??? You're not going to impress him. In fact, you might not be able to get your whole group into the same bar at once. I mean, look, 15 people is like one third or one quarter of the (legal) capacity at Toledo Lounge, for example. And think how long it's going to take to check all those IDs. Okay, maybe I'm being harsh. But the only time I've ever managed to have a good time with a group that large was on a weeknight, or on a weekend at one of the mega-clubs like Dream or VIP, because they have space for your group to hang out together. That said, a group of 15 might be able to hang out together at Tom Tom, Brass Monkey or Heaven and Hell, but none of those places will knock his socks off -- okay, upstairs at Tom Tom is kind of cool. Maybe Soussi. The Reef is out for waiting-in-line and because they let in three people at once on weekends. So is Spy Lounge. Maybe you can take over Whisper, because I never see more than like five people there, but it won't impress anyone. Sorry I'm not more optimistic about your plans, Bethesda, but that's a big group for a weekend night, when it seems like the entire world descends upon Adams Morgan. -- Fritz
Metro Center: Dear GoGs, I checked the Holiday Guide and there is not much going on between 12/18 and 01/01 (except if you are ready to spend a lot). How can I best enjoy the Holidays with my out of town folks ? (We're ready to go to any DC suburb to enjoy free or cheap concerts). Do you know of any gospel concerts or gospel brunch ? Any event at one of the many embassies? Many thanks in advance. The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Metro Center. In some ways, you're right. With Thanksgiving late in the month this year, the December season of events has been compressed. Many concerts are wrapping up this weekend. But you still have lots of (inexpensive) choices: pack a carload for a road trip through winter wonderland after you take in a concert (scroll toward the bottom of this list for your dates): I get a kick out the Rockville concert band, and the Navy Band at DAR will pack a big sound, too. And don't forget what's right nearby: all through the month, you can hear free concerts at the Pageant of Peace, and Millennium Stage has many holiday-themed shows too.
Logan Circle: Gurus, Was thinking of checking out Red Cherry Production's "Dingleberries" on Saturday -- have any of you seen it? Will I need to get tickets in advance? I saw their "Spamlet" play a few months back and got tickets right before the show, but apparently was one of the last ones able to do so. But they also said that was one of their better-performing plays. The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Jen here. I have not seen Cherry Red's latest, nor have I heard anything about it. (People, feel free to chime in with a mini-review if you've checked it out.) I suspect there was more demand for "Spamlet," so you should be able to get tickets at the door, especially if you see "Dingleberries" on a Sunday night, when it may be less crowded. But if you have any concerns, I say get tickets in advance. Better to be safe than sorry. (You may not know this, but I invented that expression.)
Need pre-party plans please!!: Good afternoon Gurus! I am attending an office party with a friend this evening. The problem: We both leave work at 5, but the festivities don't begin until 6:30. Would you suggest some low-key places to have a couple of drinks beforehand, preferably within the Mall/Metro Center/Federal Triangle area? Thank you very much!! The Going Out Gurus: Pre-party planner, by the Mall the bars at Ten Penh or Poste might do. Or move on over to Le Bar, nearer Metro Center. -- Maura
I like beer.: To the Belgian Beer Buyer: Try Total Beverage (sometimes called Total Wine) they have TONS of beer by the bottle. I know there is one located in Alexandria and one in McLean. The Going Out Gurus: Yeah, but the by-the-bottle selection is pretty bad, and the Belgians are limited. I've looked at the ones in McLean and (I think) Fairfax. Great place to buy cases of beer, though. -- Fritz
Washington, DC: I have a group of friends coming in to town for New Year's Eve. We're planning on cooking up a big feast and eating and drinking at my house. We'd like to go out dancing later in the evening, preferably in a venue with more 30-somethings than 20-somethings. The catch - several of my guests are back in grad school (read: broke). Any suggestions? The Going Out Gurus: You have to look at it from a business perspective. NYE is pretty much the biggest night of the year for businesses to pull the jack move on revelers. They know folks are out prowling for a good time, they know purse strings are looser from all the merriment, and they know that they won't be able to rake in that much dough at once on any other night of the year. Even if they don't have some specific NYE "event", any place with even the most meager square-footage of dancefloor space is going to hit folks with inflation at the door. 'Tis not a good night for the broke. Which reminds me, I think I'm staying home with a few close friends. Last year I slid up in Andalu and had a great time, but I also heard all the folks getting turned away from the $100 and champagne mega-events encountering $50 door damage for the tiny spot we were in... and I couldn't even be mad. Supply and demand. - Rhome
dc: do u know where coldplay are staying when they come to dc to play the mci center tomorrow? The Going Out Gurus: Oh yes. We know. We're really not supposed to tell. But the first word begins with Motel. And the second word begins with an 8.
Logan Circle: OK, haven't asked this one in a while, but: Metro Cafe re-location? Where? When? How? Who? Why not? The Going Out Gurus: They're looking. We ran into Mick and Dennis (Metro owners) at Marx Cafe a few weeks back, and they're still trying to find the right space. They've been close a few times, but nothing has worked out in the end. In the meantime, though, look out for the rebirth of Panic early next year in a soon-to-open space. That's all I can say for now, until Pogo says otherwise. -- Fritz
NY, NY: I have a Williamsburg question for the William and Mary alums out there. I will be heading down to Williamsburg in a week for my family's yearly pre-Christmas weekend and last minute shopping fest. I want to meet a friend for drinks Friday night and would love suggestions for a place to go (that is within walking distance of Williamsburg Lodge). Will be having dinner at the Trellis that evening, but don't remember the bar area as being very large. Sorry this is rather long and rambling. Thanks for any suggestions and Happy Holidays! The Going Out Gurus: Hello, NY. I (Jen) believe you are right about The Trellis, I don't recall much of a bar area either. The first two options that come to mind are the taverns (maybe Gambols or Chownings) but it may be tough to go in there and get a quick, casual drink. (I've always gotten a table and stayed a while.) But you could always call ahead and find out whether you can just do a pop in. (Be careful that you don't get sucked into singing rousing tunes with the folks in colonial garb. This might make you late for dinner.) My second thought is Berrett's, the seafood restaurant that's right off Duke of Gloucester Street, not too far from the Lodge or the Trellis. I believe they have a reasonably decent bar. Or, if you really want to go swank, you could have drinks at the Williamburg Inn, but I've never had the cash to go in there so I have no idea what the bar area is like. I throw this question out to my fellow William & Mary alums, who may also have suggestions. Members of the Tribe, a little help?
Capital HIll: Submitting this early in hopes that you might be able to use your super powers to check this out. Went to the ice rink at 14th & Penn. this weekend (which is listed both online and mentioned in the print edition in the recent past). And drove past it earlier this week. Only problem: no ice rink! What happened? I have been skating there in years past and enjoyed it. Is it permanently closed, never to reopen? The Going Out Gurus: No worries, CH. Pershing Park Ice Rink is closed right now. But they'll be open Saturday, through the end of February. -- Anne
Capitol Hill, DC: I'm having a party tonight-- wanna come? And for the mistletoe-seeker from last week, I found mine at Acacia, on H Street, between 14th and 15th Also, I am headed to my company Christmas party soon at the Westin Embassy Row, and have decided to treat myself and bunk down there. If the party is not-so-fun, are there any fun mixed-crowded bars within stumbling distance? Thanks! The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for the tips. By the by, how much did you shell out of the mistletoe? The Westin is a stone's throw from the Briskeller, (screaming) Mimi's and Cafe Japone (where you could throw down some karaoke). Also, you're not too far from Gazuza, Cafe Citron or Biddy Mulligan's in the Jurys Hotel. -- Kate
Alexandria: Another suggestion for volunteering on Xmas Day is Food and Friends in D.C. They can always use volunteers to help prepare and/or deliver holiday meals to their clients. The Going Out Gurus: Cheers Alex.
Eastport Yacht Club Boat Parade: I'm thinking about going to the boat parade in Annapolis on Saturday, but I'm wondering if its worth braving the crowds, or if people have tips for how early to get there, where to stand, etc. (30,000 people is a big crowd for such a small space). The Going Out Gurus: Any Annapolis readers care to drop this boat fan a line?
Adams Morgan : Hi GOG's -- LOVE the chat. It's my first time submitting but I have a lunch meeting so I gotta do it early. My friend's birthday is coming up and she really likes the Reef. I was wondering if you can call ahead and reserve one of those giant booths for the night. I figured if anyone knew it would be you! Thanks! The Going Out Gurus: It's worth calling the Reef to ask, especially if she's a regular and some of the bartenders/owners know her by sight. Seriously. They do private parties, and I know a few people who've managed to reserve tables there, but they were cozy with the right people, or spent a lot of time at the bar. -- Fritz
Washington, DC: All knowing gurus, where can I find a good selection of new and used vinyl (albums, not clothing) in the city? Preferably near Dupont... thanks! The Going Out Gurus: Capitol City Records on U. St. Orpheus out here in Arlington on Wilson Blvd. CD/Game Exchange in Adams Morgan and Tenleytown, although they don't rep the vinyl as well as say, Record & Tape Exchange used to (R.I.P.) The used part and the geographic constraint are key here, otherwise I could send you to many more places. What genres are you looking for? The U. Street weekend flea market that moved to 14th after the big crater replaced the parking lot often has a few old heads that you can dicker down on wax. - Rhome
Washington, DC: Where is the best place in DC to watch the UMCP soccer game tomorrow night? The Going Out Gurus: Lucky Bar is showing it live at 5 p.m., and a lot of soccer-watching regulars are going. I might even be there to root for my Terps. -- Fritz
D.C.: Do you have any recommendations for restaurants with live jazz music? What about places/shows with jazz Christmas music? Thanks! The Going Out Gurus: Hi DC, this is Joe and there are a few restaurants with live jazz music including Blues Alley, Twins and Bohemian Caverns. Check out this monthly roundup of jazz shows for some ideas about holiday music events.
Dupont Circle: So many holiday parties coming up, so little ideas for fun (and inexpensive) hostess gifts. Suggestions for something other than the standard bottle of wine/basket of candy/flowers? The Going Out Gurus: Candles and soaps are standards, but always useful. How about some wine accessories, like a bottle pump wine stopper or coasters to sop up that ring? -- Maura
Alexandria, Va.: Hi, I was wondering if you could help me out. I'm going to my first Kennedy Center performance on Saturday night and was trying to figure the best way to get there. My parents are staying at the Grand Hyatt, so we either take a cab, a limo, metro, or drive. Any suggestions? Any good limo services that specialize at the KC? Not looking to spend a ton of money, but if it's worth it then so be it. Thanks! The Going Out Gurus: If you're really interested in the limo idea, you might ask at the Hyatt whether they have any limo or luxury shuttle services with whom they work regularly (and that might give you a ride at a discount). Barring that, I say you cab it or take Metro. You can Metro to Foggy Bottom, then take the free shuttle that transports Kennedy Center patrons to the front door. (It leaves every 15 minutes, so the wait shouldn't be too long.) Driving isn't bad either, but with the construction that's going on, it might be more of a hassle than it's worth, especially when a taxi or Metro is so easy. Hope that helps. -- Jen
Baltimore, Md.: Fritz (and anybody else), what's you're favorite holiday beer this year? I'm suprised by Clipper City Winter Ale. Normally I'm not a fan of this brewery but this beer is tasty and affordable. Any places where I can find winter beers on tap? And any sightings of the Fuller's winter ale? Thanks The Going Out Gurus: On draft, I love the Delirium Noel (at Chez Antoine) and Young's Winter Warmer Ale (at Bedrock Billiards). Gordon Biersch's Winterbock isn't bad, either. In terms of local brews, I think Clipper City Winter is always good. Nice and malty, if I remember last year's batch correctly. Other perennial favorites include Anderson Valley (which I just saw on draft somewhere) and Sierra Nevada's Celebration Ale. Have to say I'm lukewarm on other winter beers so far. Anyone else? -- Fritz
Mt. Pleasant, Washington, D.C.: My boyfriend loves nothing more than Fat Tire beer. Sadly, it seems unfindable in the D.C. area. But if anyone knows where I might be able to pick up a bottle or take him for a pint for Christmas, it would be you Gurus. Thanks! The Going Out Gurus: They usually don't ship it east of the Rockies (for freshness reasons), although I've heard that some has shown up at Chevy Chase in years past. No idea about this year, though. -- Fritz
Arlington: Eggnog and, more importantly, wassail (hot wine and apple juice with spices). Anyone servin' it up good around here? The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Arlington. Maura, here. I know the Round Robin bar at the Willard has been serving a number of holiday concoctions. Any readers out there have recommended spots for holiday spirits?
Belgian Beers at Fresh Fields, Clarendon: We were there on a friday night and there was lots of food samplings going on. I'd never had a belgian beer before that night. the guy in the beer section had a bottle opener and paper cups. Any bottle we pointed at, he'd open and we'd try. I'm going out for Chimay on tap tonight. Belgian beers are sooo good. I got hooked. The Going Out Gurus: Yes! Just be warned that Chimay is off at Galaxy Hut (or was last night). Try Dr. Dremo's or head downtown to the Reef, Chez Antoine or Marx Cafe. -- Fritz
Mt Pleasant's gotta do AM on Fri...: Yikes-o-rama. Don't ask. So if the girl of honor wants to do Madam's Organ, what time should we get there to avoid the rib-cage crush (there's 4 or 5 people)? The Going Out Gurus: Is it possible for you to get there at 9? (And leave by 11?)
New Year's Eve: Hello, I was thinking of going to one of those hotel parties and getting a room for the night.. What are they like? (Besides the Young Professionals, which is out). Would two 20-somethings have fun there, or would we be the youngest by a decade? Would it matter? Are the bars rail drinks and packed 3-deep with people? How's the food? Sorry to bombard, it's just that they seem like something that looks cool from a distance, but is different close up. Thanks a bunch. The Going Out Gurus: Hey New Years, The crowd is older at the Euronet function (older 20s, many young-to-mid 30s), but the other ones draw a predominantly 20something crowd, especially the National Millennium at the Grand Hyatt. Many of these places were packed a year or two ago, and some promoters are assuring me that they'll have many more bar stations, etc., than they did in years past. I assume we'll find out on Jan. 1, right? -- Fritz
Mistletoed: Going price of mistletoe: Five dollars for a box of five pieces. I'll spend that much for a kiss anyday. Does that sound desperate? The Going Out Gurus: Not around here.
I Found Mistletoe @: The nursery on River Road at the MD/DC state line, right across from Fresh Fields...The name escapes me but it cost less than $3 and lasts for up to 3 weeks if kept in the fridge. Love the chats...Thanks! The Going Out Gurus: A bargain! Well done. Now, remember the name of the nursery!
Silver Spring: Hey Gurus, you guys are my heroes. Here's the situation: my friend is flying in from England for the holidays and we want to go out somewhere nice for dinner on New Year's Eve. We're both vegetarians and adventurous eaters. Can you recommend someplace fun? (It doesn't have to be a completely vegetarian menu, but enough to give us some options). The Going Out Gurus: Hi, SS. I (Anne) called Asia Nora and also Raku in Bethesda, and both have open slots for dinner on New Year's Eve. Asia Nora will have the regular menu and also a chef's menu -- say your prayers that they serve the pear tart with lavender ice cream. The Bethesda Raku does share a bit of the noise factor with its sister in Dupont, but it's not as cramped, and perhaps even more inventive. Neither are all-out vegetarian, but they're both smart places with good options.
William and Mary Bar: For the person looking for a bar in Williamsburg-if you don't mind hanging out w/students and townies, you could try the Green Leafe. It's a really nice bar/pub atmosphere! The Going Out Gurus: Go to the head of the class.
New York, NY: Re: New Year's Eve ... Do you think the trend this year will be as I have found it to be in the past - to be more chill and just kicking it at home rather than huge shindigs? I personally am looking forward to coming back to DC/VA and just hanging with friends. The Going Out Gurus: Well, we're happy you're headed our way. And I think you might be right. While there are a number of bigger bashes, most people I know are sterring towards something more low key this NYE. Of course, we could just be getting old, New York. Nah. -- Maura
Arlington, VA: Oh wise gurus- I need your help! I am planning a 30th b-day party for 10- including a 1 and 3 year old. The guests don't drink, don't smoke (what do they do?). Most events seem to be oriented around playing family-fun type games at home. The birthday girl can't take it- needs to be out to celebrate. How can I please them all? (They suggested Chuck E Cheese- because the kids would like it.) The birthday girl likes skee-ball- but I can't wrap my head around this for a 30th B-day. Any help for a fun Virginia early dinner/activity would be appreciated!! The Going Out Gurus: Does the birthday happen to be on a Wednesday? If so, I suggest the Broad Street Grill in Falls Church where from 6 to 8 p.m. every Wednesday, a clown comes in to entertain the kids. Have a look, too, at this listof kid-friendly spots. What about the dinner theatre idea? There's one of those in Alexandria. Don't know how good, mind you. But anything's better than Chuck e Cheese. That makes me want to groan. -- Alexa
Cleveland Park, Washington, DC: New to DC. In your opinion, what are the top three "must-do" holiday events to experience a real DC Christmas? The Going Out Gurus: Welcome to the neighborhood, CP. Conveniently for you, we have a page of our favorite events, with links to see a longer list. But readers, we're eager to hear from you. Anything missing from this list?
Alexandria: For the person wondering about the boat parade in Annapolis: I don't know if they are sort of the same thing, but I went to the boat parade in Old Town and was disappointed. Starbucks was giving away free hot chocolate but other than that there was not much happening. There was very little ceremony or festiviies involved, so it was pretty much a let down. The Going Out Gurus: The story from Alexandria.
U Street: Something a little different guys, please help!! I am looking for a reference for a good acupuncturist. Its not exactly "going out" but you post questions about spa's and stuff, so...? I'm looking for someone who could help with pain from an injury as opposed to relaxation or something more cosmetic. Thanks so much, you guys do a great job! The Going Out Gurus: Hello U Street, this is Joe and I went to see a Dr. Hu on K St near 17th this summer for an ankle injury that was taking forever to heal. She came highly recommended to me. Her number is 202-466-6936. I only ended up going once though and I don't think that's long enough to know whether it has done any good. I did feel pretty relaxed when I left though.
The Going Out Gurus: Update: A friend has messaged me to remind me The very, very tasty (and spicy) Anderson Valley Winter Solstace beer is on draft at the Reef. Go try it. You won't be sorry (if you like Xmas beers). -- Fritz
New Year's Eve!: Hi Gurus -- Thanks a ton for putting up that list of restaurants with special menus, etc. on New Year's Eve. In general, are these restaurants staying open late to celebrate the holiday? As in, if we reserve a table for the 9:00 seating, can we assume we'll be able to spend the rest of hte evening there, or will we have to go elsewhere if we want to have a late night? Thanks! The Going Out Gurus: Those places will certainly be open past midnight. But perhaps not as late as you would like. My guess is they'd boot you around 1.
yo fritz: my drinking hero, have you tried the dominion winter ale yet? I think dominion needs to open up their own brewpub in arlington. The Going Out Gurus: Thanks. I have, and it was good, but didn't knock me over. That said, I had it in a bottle, not on draft, so I might be missing something. I heard that Dominion was thisclose to opening a brewpub inside the beltway, but it didn't pan out. Same with a new Ram's Head. Too, too bad. -- Fritz
Dupont/Adams Morgan: Any suggestions for a low-key Sunday afternoon date in my area? In the spring or summer just going for a walk to the White House or something would be nice, but in this weather I think something indoors would be called for. The Going Out Gurus: I don't know how I ended up being the dating Guru... I think I got I just got hosed. Umm, okay... museums? Wait, I just came up with something fly, if you use this I must be credited. Head over to a coffee shop/cafe with a chessboard. Word! How about used bookstore browsing? If you want something other than nerd dates, maybe our readers can help. - Rhome
Bethesda, Md.: Hello Gurus, love the advice. Here's my problem: I am planning a special night for my girlfriend and my one-year anniversary on Dec. 20. I have dinner planned at our favorite place until about 9 p.m. but am stumped as to what to do afterwards. My girlfriend mentioned some Christmas lights festival at Bull Run or something. I'm a native Washingtonian but have never heard of this. Can you help me with a couple good ideas for 9 p.m. or so on a Friday night. Thanks! The Going Out Gurus: Bethesda, help me (Maura) here. Where is your favorite place? Let me know and we'll do our best.
Dupont Circle, Washington, D.C.: Hi Gurus! I know that you must get thoroughly tired of pre-wedding questions, but I've got one for you that I don't think I've seen answered. I'm hosting a bridal shower for a friend of mine in January. There will be about 15 women of all ages (we're talking 14 through 64) and interests. Now, here are the constraints. My apartment is tiny (TINY!) and definitely won't hold this crowd in any sort of style. Constraint number two is that I'm veering towards broke. I thought about holding a shower in a private space at a restaurant (see your earlier response!) but I can't afford to host the whole thing and I don't really want to do the restaurant bit. Finally, last constraint is that I'd like to actually Do Something for this bridal shower -- maybe a cooking class? Or a jewelry-making class? So given this mess of a situation, do you have any brilliant ideas that will get these women out of my apartment and doing something fun without breaking the bank? And if I do a cooking class or something, do I cover the full cost or is it okay to ask people to pick up their own portion as part of their gift to the bride? Thanks SO much! The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Dupont. I (Jen) like the idea of a shower that involves doing something, a much better alternative to sitting around awkwardly and munching on Triscuits. Have you looked into hosting it at Made By You? There are several locations in the D.C. area, and I believe they host parties, including bridal showers. Plus each one of you will have the opportunity to make something for the bride, maybe a piece of pottery that represents what you wish for her in her marriage or something. A cooking class also sounds like great fun, but I suspect it will be much more expensive. And as far as paying goes, I think it's certainly appropriate to at least ask the bridesmaids to help pick up the cost. Whenever I've hosted showers, several of us try to pitch in so that one person doesn't bear the burden of paying for everything. Depending on how expensive it is, you might also ask others to help out, too, though I'd be a little hesitant to ask everyone to cough up money on the invitations. ("Come to a bridal shower. Cost: $25. Oh, and BYOB.") Most people probably won't mind pitching in, but the Miss Manners in me insists that you seek out the extra cash in a more subtle way, perhaps by enlisting the help of bridesmaids or the bride's mom (moms are good at getting money from people). Good luck.
cubicle-ville: Getting a bunch of people together for drinks, etc. on Friday night. What do you think of Tryst in terms of space/atmosphere? The Going Out Gurus: The couches are comfy, the snacks are tasty. The soy mochas are the good goodness indeed, highly recommended. The only problem is that on a Friday night Tryst can become a victim of its own popularity, you might have trouble carving out a bit of space. Arrive early and hold down squatter's rights for the rest of your crew. - Rhome
Mistletoe: Merrifield Garden Center (locations in Fairfax and Merrifield) has mistletoe bunches for about $2. The Going Out Gurus: Does it get any better than this? Thanks
Beltsville, Md.: Hey Gurus! You guys are great! Love the chat! Have you guys heard of any speed dating groups in the area? I'm a busy professional and I'm interested in meeting new people. Thanks! The Going Out Gurus: HeyBeltsville: speeddating? yeahwe'veheardofit. cansomeonehelpbeltsvilleoutwithspecifics? andhurryup,we'vegotthingstodo.
Vienna, Va: For the 'Burg person looking to meet for drinks: I think there is another place behind Barrett's called Season's Cafe - they have a bar and its close to the Williamsburg Lodge. Or, walk a little farther and do it right and go to the Leafe. Its just down Richmond Rd (probably a block from Confusion Corner at the end of Colonial Williamsburg). I think the 'Ho House has a bar - but I don't remember it being all that great. Man....it makes me want to go back (sigh!). A class of 95 alumnus The Going Out Gurus: Forgot about Seasons. Good call. The Leafe is a good option, too, though a little farther of a walk. And there's always Paul's Deli, located next door to Green Leafe and one of my top five favorite places in the world. Thanks, Vienna, for the suggestions.
Washington, D.C.: What's the crowd going to be like at VIP New Years Eve? Any idea? Also, they've said that they have discounts at hotels, but numerous phone calls and emails (all unanswered) to them have turned up nothing. Thanks for the help. The Going Out Gurus: If I was in their casino room, I'd lay down money that it's going to be the same crowd that packs the VIP Club every Friday night: young professionals, 20somthings and early-30somethings out for a good time. And hey, they have the Sugar Hill Gang and an open bar. Sounds good to me. As far as hotels, I was told the names of a few they were going to "work with," but haven't heard back officially. As far as I know, though, they're still insisting something will be worked out. I'll post something when we get it. -- Fritz
Darts: Kokopooli's has darts and an interesting but fun atmosphere...Where else has Toto's Africa on the juke box? The Going Out Gurus: All the better to deceipher the lyrics: (The wild dogs cry out in the night/ As they grow restless longing for some solitary company /I know that I must do what's right/As sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serangetti/I seek to cure what's deep inside, frightened of this thing that I've become ...)
Annapolis Boat Parade: I've been in years past. The sailboats slowly mosey down ego alley and there can be some pretty impressive stuff, but it's mainly about who you're with. It's crowded but I've always been able to see (and I'm short). Be sure to bundle up! The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for the tip!
Arlington, VA: Do you guys have any suggestions for those of us wanting a low key New Year's Eve? Preferrably at a bar not hosting a huge party that you have to pay lots of money for tickets? Thanks! The Going Out Gurus: Of course, Arlington. I'm adding things to our database as I get them, but there are plenty of low-key things coming my way. All the locations of the Capitol City Brewing Company, for example, have a $5 cover and a champagne toast at midnight. No DJs, no balloon drops - just a place to hang with friends. Rock Bottom Arlington has a $15 cover, with live music and food and drink specials. Most of the divey bars (Dan's Cafe, Zack's, the Raven, etc.) won't have a cover, but won't have anything special, either. That might be just what you're looking for. -- Fritz
Bizarre Guy: What's the strangest, most off-the-wall question someone's ever asked you in these chats? The Going Out Gurus: Ah, glad you asked Bizarre Guy. I remember in one of our chats in the late 70s someone asked if Fritz was going to grow up to write about drinking (he was just three then). We thought that was bizarre at the time. Actually, because of questions a few weeks ago we found out that a lot of readers of this chat thought Rhome was a woman. Hopefully that's all been cleared up. Anyway, we like bizarre questions. The more bizarre the better in fact. So fire away.
Glover Park, DC: Afternoon GoG's, Going to a private party Friday night being thrown at Signatures downtown on Pennsylvania. Any insight on what kind of place is it? Thanks! The Going Out Gurus: Stuffy and expensive?
Rockville, MD: Looking for a place for beginners to go salsa dancing where not coming with a partner wouldn't be a big deal. The Going Out Gurus: Any of the places that have lessons will not blink an eye at a salsa solo mission. Head out to Zanzibar and Habana Village. - Rhome
birthday gathering: Hello GOGS! Some friends and I will gather next Wednesday to celebrate another friend's birthday. Do you have any ideas as to where we can go in the Dupont Circle/Adams Morgan area for a good dinner (Thai or Indian, though we're open to other options)? The birthday girl has also asked for a nice jazzy type of place afterwards. Thanks! The Going Out Gurus: Thaiphoon is fun.
WDC: You gurus have thrown off the page formatting with your cleverly unspaced answer to speed dating. Now the side column ads are covering up the discussion! Can something be done to make things right? The Going Out Gurus: We'll make the fix as soon as the discussion is over.
Washington, D.C.: I heard there's going to be a big benefit at the Zebra Bar and Lounge at The Sports Club/L.A. in Washington, D.C. for "Cheers for Children." Dominique Dawes and Mike Wilbon are going to be there as guest bartenders! It's going to be a great time for a wonderful cause. The Going Out Gurus: Yep. There's more info on the Bars and Clubs section, or just click here. I'll probably be there for a while, asking Wilbon for something complicated. -- Fritz
Not a Grinch in Arlington, Va.: My husband and I are looking for a place to go out to spend an evening and are finding that a lot of places are noisy, smoky, crowded, hurried and full of children! But we're not ready to resort to the early-bird special, we want to stay out and enjoy ourselves! Any recommendations? The Going Out Gurus: Type "smoke free" into the search box, and you'll find 5 bars with easy-to-breathe air. We'll be adding one more shortly -- the bar inside Sports Club L.A. Kid-free? I (Anne) hope that if you go to a bar, or go out late at night, that should be a given.
New Year's Eve: My friends and I are looking for something fun to do NYE, have looked at the one price, all you can eat/drink/party places at the hotels downtown and stuff. Are these worth it? What kind of crowd do they draw? We'd like a "normal", not too young, not too euro, nto too cheesy place. any ideas? THANKS! The Going Out Gurus: Hmmm...I tend to think these NYE all-in-one deals at the Ritz or Hyatt lean a little cheesy and they don't come cheap. The Helix/Rouge/Topaz fest might suit you better, but drinks aren't included, just discounted. How about something like the DC Wine Brats fest at Toka. -- Maura
To Bethesda, Md.: My two cents (which, considering our economy now, isn't much): Why don't you take your newly legal brother to Georgetown instead? Sure, it can get crowded, but not nearly as intolerable as Adams Morgan. Just a thought. The Going Out Gurus: True, true, true. Or Dupont, for that matter. Or 18th and M. Now those bars will impress him.
Re: Boat Parade in Annapolis: The boat parade in Annapolis is a great time. Yes it is crowded but there is plenty of room to stand sit along ego alley to watch the long parade of boats. Get there early and have a drink at one of the bars and then wander outside for the parade. The Going Out Gurus: More props for the parade!
Washington, DC: Help me, gurus. I've got a first date, and with this weather he suggested going someplace for warm winter drinks. Any ideas that aren't too cozy or romantic for a first date (thought Tabard Inn might fall into that category)? My other thought is to defy the weather and get a mojito. The Going Out Gurus: In the words of Digital Underground, "Doowutchyalike". Who says you can't have a mojito in winter? Fritz did a hot drink story a while back and we'll revive it, just watch this space and his bars/clubs page. Now that you mention it, I wouldn't mind having something steamy now with a belt of Kahlua or Irish Creme. - Rhome
Washington, DC: Hey Gurus: Do you know of any places that offer cooking courses? I cannot seem to find any listings except for one pricy place in Bethesda. Thanks The Going Out Gurus: Type in "cooking classes" into the search box and look at what you get -- pippin' fresh!
The Going Out Gurus: Yes, we know Joe broke the chat and it's now hard to read. We'll fix it in a few minutes, okay?
Petworth: For amazingly good, house make, real yummy solid cake doughnuts, head up to Colorado Kitchen (a theme!) for brunch. Soooooo good! The Going Out Gurus: It wouldn't be Got Plans without you, Pet.
Washington, DC: Haydee's in Mt. Pleasant has Toto's Africa on the jukebox. Besides that song, it's all spanish (salsa/merengue/cumbia). But someone must have a soft spot for the Toto. The Going Out Gurus: Ahhh, Haydee's. That's a cool little joint, but I never noticed the Toto. I think I have another reason to go back... -- Fritz
Petworth: The serious darts place was Gaffney's (later Caffney's) at Colorado and Longfellow. I don't think that it's there any more, but if it is, I want to know. They also had cheap beer, and ok pool table, and a cool pinball machine! (But I didn't see it when I went to Colorado Kitchen the other day, and I think that was the same block. I had forgotten all about Gaffney's until that night!) The Going Out Gurus: thanks Petworth, that was the place. I wonder if it's still there. It was a great place.
Technical Problems: Okay this has happened before and it's beyond annoying! The ad for the ski and golf place keeps overlapping with the responses. As if dealing with the incessant pop-up ads on the Post site wasn't enough, when this happens, it makes me forever glad that I have a subscription to the actual paper. Can you do something about that? I'm using Internet Explorer on a PC. The Going Out Gurus: Sorry about that. Fritz is on the fix. Sometimes a broken link in the chat will set that off and more than sometimes, I (Maura) am the guilty party, but this time I'm pointing the finger at Joe.
The Going Out Gurus: Hey,it's Joe and I just want to say I don't think I broke the chat. I blame everyone else.
16th & P Streets, Washington, DC: I was just wondering what is everyone's favorite DC holiday activity? Has anyone been to the White House Christmas Tree concerts? Are they as whack as Whitney thinks of crack? The Going Out Gurus: My favorite holiday activities were in church because our choir used to get busy! Big up Holy Comforter St. Cyprian. I used to do the Pershing Ice Rink too, and sometimes volunteer at S.O.M.E. I like Christmas in DC. - Rhome
Lets Go Caps!: Any bars in Ballston/Arlington off the Orange Line that show Caps games? Thinking about canceling cable since they are rasing the price again. So I'll need to go out to see live games and watch them at bars. The Going Out Gurus: Well, I'd just go down to Old Town and watch the games at Bugsy's, Bryan Watson's hockey-centric sports bar, I've heard you can see them at Mr. Days in Clarendon. -- Fritz
The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for the tips -- especially the word about prices slashed, slashed, slashed on mistletoe. Have a happy weekend and come back next weekend -- come back in 5 minutes and we'll have fixed the ad.
