Got Plans?
With the Entertainment Guide Staff
washingtonpost.com

Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002; 1 p.m. ET

Every Thursday at 1 p.m. ET, washingtonpost.com's Entertainment Guide experts share their best bets for local flavor, great dates and family fun. Got plans? Great. Need plans? Just ask. We have the skinny on the bars and clubs, concerts, kitchens, theaters and special events that keep life interesting. We're going out gurus, and we're at your service.

Of course, we're happy to answer questions about local entertainment, but we need to hear from you, too. Introduce us to the coolest DJ or the fastest bartender you've encountered. Sound off on the week's best concert or the city's best burger. Tell us about the best place to amuse little kids or a big art fan. Together we can plan fun ways to spend weekdays, weekends, dates and holidays. The pleasure is ours, and yours.

Each week a different guru will act as host or hostess, but the entire staff is at your service. If you're looking for more ideas, see the Entertainment Guide.

The transcript follows.

Editor's Note: Washingtonpost.com moderators retain editorial control over Live Online discussions and choose the most relevant questions for guests and hosts; guests and hosts can decline to answer questions.

The Going Out Gurus: The Gurus are skittish today. Joe is up to his elbows in mince pies; Kate and Maura are at work on their letters to Santa; Rhome and Jen are under the tree squeezing packages; Anne's nibbling the shingles off the gingerbread house and Fritz is singing carols outside Food Lion. Yes, it's a busy time for us. But so it is for you. Let's hear what you're up to, what your plans are and how we can improve them. And while you wait in line, check out our Holiday Guide. It's positively a-bulge with goodies.

College Park, Md.: Are there any 18-and-over or under-21 New Year's Eve events?

The Going Out Gurus: Hello, CP. There are a lot of New Year's Eve questions here, but I'll take yours first. (Everyone else, settle down. I'll be with you soon.)

Anyway, CP, if you're under 21, you can choose from the following: Stardust at Insomnia (DJs, sorta like the Zoo), Emmitt Swimming at the 9:30 Club (rock) or Peaches O'Dell and Her Orchestra, plus assorted DJs at the Black Cat (swing, rock, etc.) That's what I have right now. If anything else comes in, I'll post it. Swear. -- Fritz

Alexandria, Va.: Be a dear and tell us an update on the Metro Cafe, and in particular Panic. That's my Christmas wish!

Also, is there a "britpop" night at Marx Cafe?

The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Alexandria. I think I posted this last week, but the owners of the Metro are still looking for a new space and hope to have something done early in the new year. Panic, according to DJ Pogo, will restart in a soon-to-open club in January. I can't say where yet. But when I can, I will.

Now, as for Britpop at Marx, try Friday nights for "Taking the Piss," when you'll hear loads of great British music from the '60s to the present day. No dancefloor, though. -- Fritz

Cube farm, Washington, D.C.: Any ideas where can I find cheap men's flip-flop sandals at this time of year? Everywhere I've looked, it's nothing but fuzzy slippers and winter boots.

The Going Out Gurus: I bet you'll strike gold at Target, Rite Aid or K-Mart. - Rhome

Washington, D.C.: I saw a giant pink Neon "home" sign on F Street between 9th and 10th the other day. A quick search of your entertainment page let me know it was a new club in the area, but gave no details. Is it related at all to the superclub in London where Oakenfold is the Director of Music? Is it worth checking out? For the record, I love the DJs at ESL, and avoid clubs with decade/genre-themed dance floors. Thanks and Merry Holidays!

The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Washington. I've been to Home, but haven't visited often enough to write a full review. (I'll be back there this weekend, so you can have something next week.) It's no connection to the Oakenfold club, unfortunately.

If you don't like themed clubs, this might not be for you. Each floor has a separate "Home" theme -- the basement, the attic, the guest suite, etc. Different DJs on different floors. Very lux decor, plenty of couches and pricey drinks. Owned and promoted by the guys behind Sole and a couple other local clubs.

Anyone else have opinions on Home? -- Fritz

D.C. Wahoo: Hi Gurus, need some help from the chatters. Where in the city are U.Va. alum watching the bowl game next Saturday? Note: We can't go - our game sold out in six days, sans e-mail from coach and AD begging us to please, please buy tickets.

The Going Out Gurus: Hello, DCW. Not sure where Virginia fans hang out to watch football, but I'm sure there are a few alums out there who can direct you to the right spot. Anyone??

Washington, D.C.: Do you know if Rendenvous is doing anything for New Years? Every time I call, no one answers. I'm hoping that its like any night, no cover with good music.

If that falls through, any other fun places to hit on New Years in Adams Morgan/Dupont? I'd rather not spend $80 to get into a bar.

Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Beli told me last week that they're being rented out for a private party. Sorry folks. Oh, and I won't be there the next two weeks because of holidays. Just so y'all know. As for other free/cheap options in AM, all we can confirm is Asylum, no one else has answered our queries yet. - Rhome

Arlington, Va.: I'm desperate for your help, GoGs! I've been calling all sorts of day spas for a massage, but don't know where to go. Okay, so at this point I sound like a spoiled princess, but the massage is actually for my new bf to help him de-stress. Where can I take him that's clean, relaxing, semi-unisex for under $70 in Northern Virginia or D.C.? On a Saturday evening? Also, I want to take him to a low-key relaxing dinner afterwards. See, even though the GoGs don't specialize in day spas, there is an element of going out here afterall.

I'm begging you, please, please help me out on this one.

The Going Out Gurus: Arlington, the begging isn't necessary. Circe Aveda in Old Town offers an hour-long full body massage for $70 even. There are a few cheaper options, but not full body and I imagine prices are similar at Aveda's Georgetown location. The spa at the Four Seasons runs $65 for 30 minutes and Sports Club/LA comes in at $60 for a mere 25 minutes. Hope that helps. -- Maura

Bethesda, Md.: So, does the new supermarket in Bethesda have a "singles" aisle yet?

The Going Out Gurus: All I know Bethesda is that someone stole my cart on my visit. If there's a friendly crowd I've yet to find it. Joe, on the other hand, has far better luck making friends in supermarkets. -- Maura

Arlington, Va.: I'm looking for something fairly low-key for New Year's. Nothing too dressy or outrageously overpriced I'm a fan of Dr. Dremo's and Whitlow's in Arlingon -- any idea about their New Year's parties? Or anything else that you know of in Arlington or D.C.? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Dremo's and Whitlow's are both in our New Year's Eve event listings, Arlington. Both are fairly cheap ($15 and $20, respectively), neither has a dress code or open bar. Dremo's has a DJ, buffet and gives you a coupon for a free drink. Whitlow's has the Worrystones (local rock) and a buffet. I think they're pretty equal, so it comes down to music and the type of crowd you want. -- Fritz

Washington, D.C.: Happy Holidays, GOGs! To celebrate the season, my BF and I are going to an 8:30 p.m. show at the Kennedy Center on Sunday. Do you have any suggestions for a nice and romantic or fun, but not too pricey restaurant to go to before the show? Thanks for your help!

The Going Out Gurus: Our Kate is a big fan recently of the Kennedy Centre's very own Roof Terrace Restaurant. Otherwise, there's the Brasserie just down the ramp. Or in Foggy Bottom (with a complimentary shuttle to and from the show) is Marcel's. -- Alexa

Silver Spring, Md.: I would like to propose to my girlfriend on New Year's Eve. Can you recommend somewhere that is romantic and dressy?

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Silver Spring. I assume you mean that you want to propose at a romantic restaurant (if I'm wrong, please write in again and I'll come up with other ideas). Here's a nifty trick: type romantic into our search box, and you get this great list of romantic restaurants. Scan it and see what appeals to you. I (Jen) would personally recommend 1789 or Cafe Bethesda, as both are on the dressy side. Only issue with Cafe Bethesda is that it's on the smallish side, so you might not have a ton of privacy. Then again, it might be kind of cool if you get engaged and everyone in the restaurant applauds like they did in the movie "Moonstruck." Best of luck.

Re: DC Wahoo: I know Cavaliers convene at some Crystal City sports bar...and a bunch of us live in north Arlington so there may be a crowd at Mister Day's or some other tragic place.

McMullen will be a steal in the second round.

The Going Out Gurus: So if you can't make the Crystal City Sports Pub (see my previous answer), head for Mr. Days. Okay? -- Fritz

Somewhere, USA: I'm planning on taking the Metro shuttle bus from the Greenbelt station to BWI on Saturday. I was wondering if you've heard anything about how popular it is? Will I be able to count on fitting on the first bus that comes, or should I give myself extra time in case everyone else in the city has the same plan as me? The bus only runs every 45 minutes or so, and since it's supposed to be one of the busiest travel days, I don't want to miss my flight, but my trek that day is going to be long and drawn out enough (flying to the West coast with a layover in Denver) that I'd like to minimize time if I could. Whaddya think?

The Going Out Gurus: I've taken this shuttle quite often over the past year and a half but never around Christmas time. From my experience it's still a relatively underused service, folks' eyes light up when they find out about it so the secret isn't fully out yet. I've never been on a B30 that was even approaching full. I'm always one to err on the side of caution though, especially with travel where Murphy's Law always seems to be in effect. Give yourself a buffer of one bus trip just in case. - Rhome

Arlington, Va.: Will the museums be open on Christmas Day and New Year's Day? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Arlington, most museums will be closed for Christmas, but New Years Day finds open doors at the Holocaust Museum and Smithsonain museums, including the National Zoo. -- Maura

Washington DC: This is regarding the massage question,
If you want to pay for a cheap Full Body massage you can check out your local Gym. (Washington Sports Club, Golds Gym) Price at these gyms are usually reasonable and you don't have to have a membership at the gym to use the service.

The Going Out Gurus: More massage options.

Spa Seeker: Try the Red Door Salon by Elizabeth Arden in Mazza Galleria.

The Going Out Gurus: Elizabeth Arden for the bf? If he's willing...

Washington, D.C.: Are there any good Thai restaraunts in downtown/near the Warner Theatre? Or should I just head up to Dupont?

The Going Out Gurus: You might want to run along to Ten Penh (at 10th and Penn -- geddit?). Pan Asian and tip-top. -- Alexa

Adams Morgan, Washington, D.C.: Hey GOG's. Do you happen to know if the Reef is planning anything special for this New Year's eve?
Or part two of the question: what Adams Morgan bars will not be doing reserve in advance events?

Thansk -- y'all are the best!

The Going Out Gurus: Hey AM,
The Reef is closed for a private party, although they may yet be taking reservations for later in the night. Watch this space.

Asylum is open for business as usual. And loads of spots -- Millie and Al's, Toledo, Fasika's, Chief Ike's, etc. -- won't be selling tickets in advance, if at all. (So far, Heaven is the only one that's charging more if you buy tickets at the door.) Still waiting to hear back from a few spots, though, like Tom Tom and Felix/Spy Lounge. -- Fritz

Washington, D.C.: I'm planning on seeing the Chocolate Nutcracker on Saturday at the Lincoln Theater. Have you heard any reviews about the show? Can you purchase tickets on the day of the show at the Lincoln Theater? Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, D.C. I (Jen) haven't heard any specific reviews of "Chocolate Nutcracker," but it sounds like great fun to me. Any show that includes break-dancing is always a winner in my book. And you should have no trouble getting tickets the day of the show. At least so says the woman at the Lincoln Theater box office. Have a great time.

Date Tip: She works in Federal Triangle, I work in Farragut West. I need good options for both a drinks date and a dinner date. I just moved here so I don't know the area too well. Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: Alrighty DT, how date-y do you dare to go? You could have a lively little supper at the bar of DC Coast. Sexier, of course, would be Carribbean cocktails and spicy nibbles at the palm-y Ortanique. You could get down and sudsy with burgers and beers at Stoney's, it's a dive, but that can be a kick when you're looking for something casual -- the atmos, not the relationship gutterbrains. -- Kate

Arlington, Va.: What type of music does the lounge at Ortanique play? Also, what do you think of it for dinner as well as for hanging out later. Is it a lounge or a dance club, or a combination of the two? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Depends on the night, Arlington. There's live salsa on Fridays, jazz and blues on Thursday and Saturday, and reggae on New Year's Eve. It's not really a dance club -- they only clear tables for salsa night, so the upstairs is more of a lounge than anything else. Tom Sietsema liked the food and both Eric Brace and I love the drinks and atmosphere, so there are your endorsements. -- Fritz

Washington, D.C.: Hi Gurus -- happy holidays! Wondering if anyone has been to the new Brick's Tavern in Cleveland Park? I thought I remembered something mentioned in last week's chat. What did you think? Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: Happy holidays, DC. This is Anne, and I was in a packed Brick's a few Fridays ago. I'll try again to give it a fair shot, but it wasn't what I had hoped for. I wanted it to be an inexpensive place to eat before the Uptown, or an easy way for families to unwind after a day at the zoo, and the food is too pricey for what you get to hit that demographic. I think if all you want is a place to meet friends, drink beer, maybe have some basic apps or a sub before going elsewhere, it will do -- especially if you want to watch TV while you're doing all that. The ratio of TV sets to square footage (in a tiny space) is ungainly.

Mount Vernon, Va.: Re: Museums.

I believe Mount Vernon is open on Chrismas Day. My Jewish uncle has a tradition of taking my cousin there each year to get a break from all the Christmas mayhem.

The Going Out Gurus: You're right. Great call. Mount Vernon is open -- and decorated -- for Christmas and New Year's Day. If you're lucky you may even get some cider and a copy of Martha's cake recipe. -- Maura

Follow up to my Marx Cafe question: I had heard that there's a Liverpudlian DJ on Wednesdays. Is that the case? And the lack of dance floor is fine. I mean, the Mousetrap has become so trendy, I don't know if I'm a poser any more.

The Going Out Gurus: Ohhhhh. SophiafromLondon (I mean, SophiafromSouthport) was DJing there on Thursdays, but I'm not sure if she has a regular gig.

When I have a Friday night free, I like going and hanging at the bar at Marx with a half-liter of Jever (or DeKoninck, these days) and just listening to the DJs. Good, surprising stuff. -- Fritz

Men's Spa: There is a place called the Grooming Lounge on L Street that is essentially a men's spa. It's a bit on the expensive side (massage is $90), seems like a cool place. Web site is www.groominglounge.com

The Going Out Gurus: There's the stuff.

Upper Georgetown: Any suggestions or recommendations on where I can take salsa lessons on either a Friday or Saturday night?

The Going Out Gurus: Habana Village. Habana Village. Habana Village. -- Fritz and Rhome

Maryland: Please HELP! I want to suprise my husband with a night out at a comedy club, preferably an open-mike one. Anywhere in D.C. area would work. Please give me some suggestions, thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Can you wait until Jan. 21 (you can get tickets in advance, if you're looking for a present) because DC's best comedy club, the Improv is hosting their 5th annual open mike night on Jan. 21. It's such a rarity, and farly well-known on the stand-up circuit that people (read: class clowns) really do jockey to play here. It should be as good a night of open mike that you'll find around town. Tickets are $12 a piece, and they sell out. -- Kate

For Arlington who needs a spa: It's on the pricy side, but I have been to Andre Chreky downtown and know that they offer a wide range of services, are very professional and clean, and have always been very nice (even though I'd never been to a spa, and had no clue what to ask for)! Try their Web site!

The Going Out Gurus: Here you go Arlington:

Christmas Crazies: This may be a little out of your vertical, but perhaps you'll have ideas.

I am sending out Christmas cards and alas have run out. Where can I find some more nice ones at this late date?

Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Janet here. I just bought some last week at Olsson's at Courthouse, which had a good selection both in variety and price. I think I remember that Barnes & Noble had some, too.

Alexandria, Va.: I'm a divorced woman in my forties trying to get out of the house and PARTICIPATE, but I'm finding that a lot of book groups, church groups, etc., in my area are mostly composed of retired women! Do you know of any clubs for hiking or dining out that are actually intended for middle-aged folks?

The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Alexandria, the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club has hikes geared for all ages, from moms with toddlers to 90-year-olds. If you're interested, call the leader and ask about the intensity of the hike. You'll find a range of ages, but a consistent fitness level. As for book groups, I've seen fliers at Borders recently encouraging people to start their own ... so you could find ages that appeal. But I'd think Politics and Prose, with its an abundance of groups, would have an option you'd enjoy. -- Anne

Preggie in Ashburn, Va.: Gurus,

I LOVE all your great ideas for New Year's Eve, but this year I will be four months pregnant for the holiday. I still like to have a good time (sans alcohol) and don't mind going into D.C. or Arlington. Do you have any ideas that may be fun for my husband and I, but would definately include some necessary things for a pregnant lady -- food, a place to sit when necessary, food, a fun place when sober, maybe not too much smoke, and did I mention food. Thanks a lot guys!

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, preggie. I (Jen) suggest you scan our list of New Year's Eve parties and see what appeals to you. At first glance, I'd recommend the event at Clarendon Ballroom (there will be food, and it's large enough that you hopefully could escape heavy smokers), or maybe Strike Bethesda (though I'm not sure bowling is mentioned in "What to Expect When You're Expecting.") Look around here and see what you find. Have fun with almost-baby New Year.

Washington, D.C.: Where, oh where, are the tacky Chrismas lights hiding? I'm not talking about the "official" displays like Watkins Park, but about houses with inflatable Santas and flashing lights on every available surface. An hour of driving around Capitol Hill yielded two decked out houses and a few tasteful displays of white lights. Does anyone know of a great neighborhood (preferably in the city or nearby) that goes all out? Even one street would do a lot for my holiday spirit! Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: If'n the sheer wealth of ticky-tacky lights at the mother of all local displays fails to entice (and light nuts would be stoopit to miss this freebie), then the drive out to Kensington should be good. I've seen nuts lights displays in Falls Church in past years too. -- Kate

Dupont Circle, Washington, D.C.: Joining a group of friends for Aerosmith at MCI on Saturday. Any suggestions on a place to meet up beforehand?

The Going Out Gurus: What are you looking for? Drinks? Food?

Springfield, Va.: There are lots of newyears options listed in the entertainment guide but most of them start at 100 bucks per person. Of the reasonably priced ones what would you choose Tequila Grill, Recessions or something else entirely? I have never been to either of the places that I mentioned so I don't really know what to expect. What hotels are close by (walking distance) to these bars?

Where will you almighty Gurus be on Newyears eve?

Thanks for your help and happy holidays to all.

The Going Out Gurus: Okay, Springfield. This is advice from the heart: I wouldn't go anywhere on New Year's Eve if I hadn't been there before (hotel parties are an exception). Honestly, I'm not sure how those parties are gonna be, or who they'll draw (although the Grill will have a nice college-age crowd). I prefer to go to a place I know, or hang out with a bunch of friends at a bar/club we've been to. That way, you don't get any nasty surprises. (I've had a few of those.)

Not everything is expensive - Off the top of my head, Dr. Dremo's is $15, Whitlow's is $20, Chief Ike's is $20, Club Heaven is $20, Asylum is free, Home (if you want a superclub) is $30, as is the VIP club. Now, most of these places don't have black-tie requirements or open bars (VIP is an exception), but you get what you pay for.

Whatever bar/club you choose, most have done a deal with a nearby hotel for discounted rates. Be sure to ask when buying your tickets.

And what are WE doing? Joe's going to be in his house, with the lights out, sitting in a corner -- alone, and still worrying about Y2K. Rhome will be home, too, because "I don't have a gig and I don't have a woman. I can't even watch the ball drop, cuz my TV's broken." Alexa's going to be under her duvet at home.

Damn, this is getting depressing.

Well, at least Maura's going out - although it's none of your business where - and Jen's gonna be watching the Peach Bowl. Kate's not sure. I'm gonna be party hopping. So there's hope... -- Fritz

Northern Virginia: My mom and some of her friends (60-something?) will be in town to house and cat sit while we run and hide for the week of December 22. She should be pretty up on the big galleries (Corcoran, Phillips, NGA). What other exciting items might I mention to them to amuse themselves during the stay?

Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: NoVa, sounds like you've planned well already. There are great shows at the Phillips and National Gallery -- Bonnard and Trompe L'Oeil. And the Corcoran's biennial is , provided Mom's game for something a little trippy. Otherwise, along the holiday theme, let them explore local holiday lights or the displays at Union Station and . Theater tickets would be a treat, South Pacific is garnering raves (including those from guru Kate). -- Maura

Springfield, Va.: Last minute shopper. What are some reputable jewelry stores in Alexandria? Something with a selection of gemstone earrings, perhaps? Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: There's a store called Gold Works-David Martin Design on 1400 King Street that gets high marks from people around here. I'd try there, at least to start.

Arlington, Va.: Is Washington Improv Theater's show appropriate for all family members? I heard it was really funny and I'm looking for something to do with parents in from out of town, but don't want to take them to something that might be more than "PG-13."

The Going Out Gurus: This is Anne, and yes, I think WIT is safe for parents. The troupe is certainly no Cherry Red Productions. The only unknown, of course, is the audience, who shout out suggestions for the next scene, and the crowd can sometimes be bawdy.

New Year's Eve in Adams Morgan: The Reef is closed (all of it) for a private party.

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, but I've talked to people there who said they might be taking reservations for later in the evening. Call and ask for yourself if you don't believe me. -- Fritz

Takoma Park, Md.: Oh great Going Out Gurus,

I am looking for a venue to have an Oscars party. The ideal venue would hold approximately 200 people in a cafe or restaurant-style setting complete with waitstaff and food service. Of course, there would have to be plenty of televisions around or one big television projecting the events on a screen big enough for everyone to see. Metro accessible is desired. Do you have any ideas?

The Going Out Gurus: I (Jen) am already very excited for this year's Oscars, so I commend you for thinking ahead. As you may know, there are annual Oscar parties at Visions and the Arlington Cinema and Drafthouse. But it sounds like you want to privately host something, in which case my friend Fritz recommends the F Street Sports Bar. It's in the MCI Center, and definitely has plenty of TVs. It's also a cool, large space, so it might work nicely. Call and see if they're down with letting you reserve the space.

Alexandria, Va.: There's a massage school that offers hour-long massages by its students for $40. Not sure of the exact name, maybe AK Massage School or something like that. Think it's in Maryland.

The Going Out Gurus: That's definitely a good price. Sounds like the equivalent of hair stylists in training. Which could or could not be a good thing.

Downtown Charley Brown: Hi GOGs,

I've reserved a deluxe king room at the new Madera Hotel for New Year's Eve, to give my visiting honey room to stretch his 6'3" frame. I see that the other Kimpton hotels lounges (Rouge and Topaz) are partying that night, any news on this new one?

The Going Out Gurus: Sorry, DCB. No major party planned at Firefly, although they'll have a special NYE dinner menu, etc. It's on the wrong side of the circle for the whole Rouge-Topaz-Helix shebang. -- Fritz

Adams Morgan, Washington, D.C. : Is there an all-you-can-eat sushi place in D.C.? I used to go all the time with my friends in New York, but I haven't seen anything like it since I moved to these parts.

The Going Out Gurus: Let's ask the group...

Glover Park, Washington, D.C.: Hi Gurus,

I have a question about tipping etiquette. Usually when I am sitting at the bar and I leave a tip after each drink, the bartender picks it up pretty soon and says thank you. Sometimes though, bartenders will just leave my dollar or whatever the tip is sitting on the bar. When I order another drink, I am not sure if I should tip again or if this is the bartender's way of saying they don't want my tip. If a bartender leaves my tip on the bar, should I continue to tip? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Hey GP,
I usually add it to the existing tip and then nudge it over to the bartender's side of the bar, near the rail. I know some bartenders don't pick up tips if you're sitting at the bar b/c they consider it rude to do so. I think it really depends on if you're paying as you go or running a tab.

Anyone else? -- Fritz

Re: Bricks: My friends and I stopped in right after it opened because we were looking for a bite to eat in the neighborhood. They lost points right off the bat by not telling us that they didn't yet have their liquor license until after we sat down. We stayed anyway. Disappointing from start to finish -- bad pizzas, bad sandwiches. Lame atmosphere. We won't be back.

The Going Out Gurus: Wow. Not even after it settles in?

Somewhere, USA: GOGs -- I need your date advice! I have a blind date TOMORROW night! Apparently he likes jazz, the outdoors, art (like the Phillips Collection, I guess) and he rides his bike everywhere (even though he has a car).

I want to avoid a high-pressured weird club vibe -- because it will only be us and it's a blind date. So we need to do something where we can chat, but also have an activity just in case things head south. I will be wearing jeans and a sweater. It must be relatively inexpensive too.

Any ideas?

The Going Out Gurus: Second week in a row this lands in my lap, I smell a conspiracy. How about DJ Dredd at Aroma. Nice tunes, sip on a libation or two, y'all can 'conversate' (yes, that is a verb). Let us know how it goes. I'm not giving out anymore dating advice without a promise of a follow up status report, never did hear back from last week's contestant. - Rhome

Arlington, Va.: Hello! I have my mom, sister, and brother coming in town for Christmas and need help on what to do (I'm new and clueless). My mom doesn't like bars, us kids are in our 20s, I have to work half a day on Tuesday, and they're leaving Wednesday. They're going to "do D.C." while I'm at work, but any suggestions on fun, creative, and interesting things to do Christmas? Cheap and economical is always best, but I don't want to be so cheap that it's lame. Thanks, and Happy Holidays to everyone!

The Going Out Gurus: Can't you send them down to the Mall? It's a free visual feast, all-you-can-look-at for no charge, and even if they've been before, suggest something new. They've probably never seen the knock out photo show at the National Museum of African Art (just look at the these!); Julia Child's kitchen; or the baby elephant at the Zoo.

If you're looking for something to do in the evenings why not put yourself at a table in the center of the buzz at Zaytinya? It's not too expensive and it's chic too. What about "Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" at the Uptown (biggest, baddest screen in town) -- book your tickets in advance. -- Kate

Arlington, Va.: Hi,

I think you should have a new section called "date night." For couples who still want to go out and have a good time but are past clubbing and getting wasted.

Cheers,
Erin

The Going Out Gurus: Very innerresting Erin. I'd like to hear more about what you'd like or expect to find in this section. Drop me an e-mail: kate.gibbs@washingtonpost.com.

Alexandria, Va.: Hey gurus, thanks for always being here with such great suggestions. Now for something I have not seen before in the chats. Does anyone know where/how to get a horse and carriage ride downtown? Thinking about taking my girlfrined by the monuments, the tree, etc. I've seen them in NYC, Annapolis, Old Town and countless other spots, but never downtown. If anyone can throw out suggestions, tht would be awesome.

The Going Out Gurus: Charley Horse Carriage Company offers rides through Dec. 31, in the evenings until 11 p.m. You can meet them on the west side of the Capitol. It's $10 per person; call 202/488-1155 for reservations. -- Anne

K Street, Washington, D.C.: What happened to living for today? New Year's sooo far away; what I want to know is where I should head for happy hour tonight downtown! Free food would be a plus. Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: It's Thursday, so there are free tacos at the Front Page and a bunch of bottle specials. Or you can try the free wings at the Art Gallery Grille and $3.25 drinks. They're not great, but they'll fill you up. -- Fritz

Dupont Cirlce, Washington, D.C.: Hi Gurus,

Do you know if the "Lord of the Rings" shows in the area have been sold out? I want to go tonight, but don't want to wait in the madness of a 100-person line a la Uptown.

The Going Out Gurus: Tonight's shows at the Uptown are sold out, but I believe you could get tickets to shows elsewhere, depending on how far you want to journey. You might try taking the Metro to United Artists Bethesda and seeing it there. (Here's the complete list of theaters showing "The Two Towers," if you want other options.) Or you could hold out a little longer and see it later at the Uptown (I believe there are still tickets for this weekend's matinees, but not the evening shows), which is what I recommend. It's the type of film that really should be seen in the grandest setting possible. If you simply can't wait, do try to order advance tickets for one of tonight's screenings. Otherwise you might be out of luck.

The Going Out Gurus: Holiday lights tip for folks looking for the kilowatt draining gaudy displays... for all my PG County peoples. Heading north on 201 near College Park, head east on Good Luck Road. You'll see the house on your left. These folks go nuts on almost every holiday of the year, of course they do it up big for Christmas. - Rhome

Chinatown bus to New York City for DMB at MSG?: Can the Gurus help me out?

I'd like to save some duckets by taking the Chinatown bus to New York City on Saturday. Any links to time schedules and what not?

Greyhound is 45 bucks one way, cripes.

Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: Sorry Greyhound rider, I've not gotten around to it yet, but I will have a report in the new year. Part of my trouble are the odd departure times (from DC), last time I called it was 4 a.m. or 2 p.m. I agree, it's bogus that Greyhound costs so much, but you are buying a guaranteed seat and unlimited round the clock departures and arrivals. I will follow up, or my name's not -- Kate

Washington, D.C.: Anywhere in the district for Iowa fans to watch the Orange Bowl?

The Going Out Gurus: Hmmmm. Washington, the "official" Iowa alumni are heading for the Crystal City Sports Pub. If you don't mind being in mixed company, most bars will be showing it. You might try the Grand Slam Sports Bar in the Grand Hyatt at Metro Center. -- Fritz

Downtown Thai: Tehn Penn is pan-Asian, not really Thai. Try Haad Thai on 11th street, across from the old convention center. It is in the same building as the downtown Capital City Brewery.

The Going Out Gurus: Did I not say pan Asian?

Bethesda, Md.: Any idea of New Year's Eve events in my area? Looking for something relatively cheap and not too dressy.

The Going Out Gurus: Bethesda, up your way you'll find Rock Bottom Strike Bethesda offer New Year's options. -- Maura

Gangs of D.C.: Where is "Gangs of New York" playing in our area? Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: It's showing at numerous places, including: Loews Georgetown (good excuse to visit this new theater, which is quite nice); Loews Rio, AMC Courthouse and a number of other spots. I'd link you to all the showtimes, but we're having technical difficulties at the moment, which I'm sure (are you listening, movie showtime gods?) will be fixed very soon.
I (Jen) generally recommend the movie, though it does have its flaws. But Daniel Day Lewis is a joy to watch, and I now have newfound lust ... I mean, uh, respect ... for Leonardo DiCaprio.

Need hair help!: Any suggestions for a decently priced (i.e., $35-45) haircut/good stylist in Arlington or Tysons Corner? I need hair help stat!

The Going Out Gurus: How about PR @ Partners Xchange, an offshoot of PR @ Partners. They have locations in Chantilly and Alexandria, and cuts start at $30.

Bethesda, Md.: I'm a 23-year-old looking for a good time -- live music and good beer on tap. I go to Georgetown, Adams Morgan, Capitol Hill and Bethesda (home base) pretty regularly. Suggestions? I've caught some nice reggae in Adams Morgan. Jazz, blues or bluegrass are all good options.

The Going Out Gurus: Hey Bethesda,
That's a pretty good combination you have there. There aren't many jazz spots with good beer, although Ortanique on Thurs/Sat comes close, and Bohemian Caverns has a decent selection. But some of my favorite places for jazz and bluegrass - HR-57, Madam's Organ, Cafe Toulouse, Twins - have no beer or "eh" beer on tap. You might try the Saloon in Georgetown. On the first Thursday of the month, guitarist Tom Principato (swing, jazz, blues) plays at the Brickskeller, and there are special draft beers available for the night. You might want to check that out. -- Fritz

Lights and Sushi: There is an all-you-can-eat sushi place in Rosslyn. It's pretty good.

And apparently the Gurus are smoking crack if you consider the Temple the mother of all light displays. While it's not "local" the miracle on 34th St. in Baltimore's Hampden neighborhood is the mother, father and baby jesus of all light displays. The Travel section did a blurb on it a couple of weeks ago.

The Going Out Gurus: Where's the love? I stand my by "mother" of local lights display. I'm thinking this is no more than 30 minutes from any reader and it's free, and you get to oggle it all with the Mormon Temple in the near background. I won't go into detes about their having more than 300,000 bulbs, etc. Technically Watkins Park has more lights (a hot half-million) but there is a fee. That said, the whoo-ha in Baltimore is a wonder, (not local, hon) but something for the true fan. -- Kate

Washington, DC: Regarding Marx Cafe and Britpop (it's called "Taking the Piss" there), the next night for that will be Jan. 17. Tomorrow night we're running the Jamaican Soundclash there (I'm one of the deejays at Marx on Friday's)

Mark

The Going Out Gurus: Ah. Cheers. -- Fritz

Date night: I second Erin's idea. A lot of times I have a question, but I don't want to go clubbing around the city.

The Going Out Gurus: Okay, so let me -- or any of us for that matter --know what you'd like to see. If you tell us, we will build it and you will come, or something like that. Jsut drop an e-mail. -- Kate

Manassas, Va.: Getting ready to move, and I have a question that may be more Miss Manners than Going Out: is it presumptuous for us to throw ourselves a housewarming party once we get settled? We'd like to welcome our old friends into our new space -- and invite new friends -- but didn't know if this falls into the bridal shower category, where you're supposed to wait for someone else to honor you with it. I doubt anyone will want to "honor" us, but would be happy to play hostess. What do you all think? Any good party ideas?

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Manassas. I don't think it's all presumptuous of you to throw yourselves a housewarming party. It's a great way to show your friends your new digs and welcome them in. You really don't need a theme other than that.

Washington, DC: I'm going to the Aerosmith concert on Saturday followed by a trip to Dream. I want to wear jeans to the concert, but I heard that Dream has a strict "no jeans" policy, even for women. What are some good alternatives?

The Going Out Gurus: Uh ... Aerosmith and Dream. You sound pretty diverse, Washington, which we like. Are you looking for an upscale dance party with no dress code? Hmmm. You can wear jeans to Home, the new nightclub on F Street. It's not the same as dream, but the experience might be close. -- Fritz

Rockville, Md.: I'm looking for a good place to take horesback riding lessons (preferably western-style vs. English style) in western Montgomery County (Potomac/Rockville/ Gaithersburg area). Are these places open year round? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Rockville, try this: call 301-977-8010. This is Anne, and I have a tip they offer Western lessons. But I'd called the major MoCo stables for your and they're all English. Another tip: try the tack shop called The Surrey, 10107 River Road, Potomac, and pick up a magazine there that lists local stables who give lessons. My guess is that you'll need to try Frederick County.

washington dc: A group of friends were thinking about going to the VIP club for New Years, but we've never been there and $30 seems to good to be true. Is this a fun place, and what's the crowd like?

The Going Out Gurus: I know, Washington, but my sources at the club tell me that it *IS* true. It's a four-floor dance club that's gonna get crowded - there aren't a lot of seats - kind of upscale, will attract a mix of 20-and-30something professionals, as well as salsa dancers. It should be a fun night. I know loads of people who are considering it. -- Fritz

The Going Out Gurus: Happy and safe hols folks. We'll be back with you Jan. 2. Same time.
