Got Plans?
With the Entertainment Guide Staff
washingtonpost.com

Thursday, May 8, 2003; 1 p.m. ET

Every Thursday at 1 p.m. ET, washingtonpost.com's Entertainment Guide experts share their best bets for local flavor, great dates and family fun. Got plans? Great. Need plans? Just ask. We have the skinny on the bars and clubs, concerts, kitchens, theaters and special events that keep life interesting. We're going out gurus, and we're at your service.

Of course, we're happy to answer questions about local entertainment, but we need to hear from you, too. Introduce us to the coolest DJ or the fastest bartender you've encountered. Sound off on the week's best concert or the city's best burger. Tell us about the best place to amuse little kids or a big art fan. Together we can plan fun ways to spend weekdays, weekends, dates and holidays. The pleasure is ours, and yours.

Each week a different guru will act as host or hostess, but the entire staff is at your service. If you're looking for more ideas, see the Entertainment Guide.

Submit your questions and comments before or during the discussion.

Editor's Note: Washingtonpost.com moderators retain editorial control over Live Online discussions and choose the most relevant questions for guests and hosts; guests and hosts can decline to answer questions.

The Going Out Gurus: Welcome back to another feisty edition of Got Plans? So what's on your minds today? Is it "The Matrix: Reloaded"? Springsteen tickets? Or do you just want to know what's happening this week in nightlife? Whatever your question or concern, we're here for you (though not in a Dr. Phil kind of way). Alexa, Maura, Joe, Fritz, Kate, Anne and I (Jen) are at the ready. Hit us with your best shots.

K Street, Washington, D.C.: Gurus, College roommate in town this weekend. Need your thumbs up/down on the following: Margaret Bourke White at the Phillips, Lebanese Taverna in Woodley Park. Thanks for your help. These chats make long days pass faster!

The Going Out Gurus: K Street, sounds like a great plan. Are you sure you need us? The Bourke-White show is definitely worth a visit -- and only one week left! My Phillips ritual usually includes a stop at Teaism, but I don't think you can go wrong with Lebanese Taverna. Have fun. -- Maura

Burke, Va.: Hi Gurus. I'm trying to find this Italian restaurant in D.C. somewhere. Heard a LOT of great things about it, but it has a strange name -- Beupa de Beco (spelling?!) or something like that. I'm probably not even close to the right spelling, but I've heard people just rave about it! Have you heard of this place? And how do you spell it?!

Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: It's called Buca di Beppo, my friend. And, if you like big, hefty, saucy pastas, you'll be grand. -- Alexa

Silver Spring, Md.: Hi Gurus. Have you ever been to the happy hour at Maggiano's in Friendship Heights? How is it? Keep up the good work!

The Going Out Gurus: No, I haven't. But let's ask the group...

Downtown, Washington, D.C.: Hi all! I have a friend coming to town for a visit tomorrow, and I'd like to take her around the Mall and have lunch at Zaytinya. I haven't tried it yet, but I hear it's fantastic. Is it too busy at lunch, though? What's your experience there with the lunch crowd? Thank you for your thoughts.

The Going Out Gurus: No. You must go to Zaytinya. It's big and exciting. Lots going on. You'll love it. -- Alexa

Downtown Cube: Hi GoGs:

Was just looking over your brunch feature and noticed that you didn't list one of my faves -- Sunday drag brunch at Chaos. It's all you can eat and never crowded. Any reason it's not listed?

Also, yet another new place opened up in MCI-area -- Matchbox! Stumbled in there last week and found some great brick oven pizza and a cool lounge-type atmosphere. Working downtown may soon not be so bad after all.

The Going Out Gurus: Indeed. Matchbox is a fine little place that we shall go back to again and again. The sausage pizza is king. And those mini burgers! -- Alexa

Arlington, VA: I'm submitting this in advance because I have a meeting during the chat, and I'm hoping your "guru knowledge" will be able to help me out here...

Mom is coming down for the weekend, and we were planning on a Sunday brunch. I read the recommendations in the brunch section for Mother's Day, but don't like the sound (or price) of many of them. I heard Gordon Biersch has one with a blues band and make-your-own bloody mary bar, which she is sure to love. Anyone ever been? Good food? I don't want her Mother's Day celebration to be a disappointment.

Thanks for the help!

The Going Out Gurus: I've been a few times, Arlington, and the swingin' blues band -- Big Joe and the Big Three Combo, I believe -- is the best reason to go. The make-your-own bloody bar isn't unlimited. I think they were like $6 each or so, as the bar uses Absolut Peppar vodka. I like the pancakes and waffles, and the eggs were above average.

I'm sure mom will love it. -- Fritz

Clyde's, Washington, D.C.: You enjoy the baseball encyclopedia, Fritz? Huge fan of the back bar at Clyde's.

The Going Out Gurus: Yeah, I like baseball trivia. Bartender of the Month Bob Stahl really had me on that question about back-to-back MVP's at each position. I totally blanked on Joe Morgan and Hal Newhouser (even though my dad's a Tigers fan from Detroit).

And Clyde's is worth a visit even if you don't like baseball trivia, especially during happy hour. -- Fritz

Alexandria, Va.: Where's a good place for Mother's Day Brunch. I want A LOT of selection including omelettes and waffles to prime rib and ham. I'm willing to go for anything up to $60/person. I also want a nice, formal setting, with some nice music, too.

The Going Out Gurus: Here's our brunch guide. Have a little look at it. But from what you say, I bet you might like B. Smith's or Georgia Brown's. Huge buffets, both, and under $25 per head. -- Alexa

Arlington, Va.: Any more info on the "Screen on the Green?" Is it going to happen this year?

The Going Out Gurus: Screen on the Green is on for five weeks this summer -- Monday nights at the Washington Monument grounds, starting July 14. We should know what the movies are in a few days. -- Anne

Dupont Circle: I've absolutely loved these chats--they give me so many ideas for things to do in Washington. But I'm moving to Chicago at the end of the month and I was wondering if you know of any websites that do similar online chats. Metromix.com is the best Chicago city guide I can find, but I don't think they have on-line, real-time gurus like you guys.

The Going Out Gurus: Hi Dupont. As for Chicago, I think you're right: No gurus in sight. Neither Metromix nor the SunTimes -- Red Streak and all -- does online entertainment chats. That said, I think your best bet for windy city info, at least, is Metromix. -- Maura

Georgetown, Washington, D.C.: Hi Gurus, I am interested in taking a wine class this summer and would love some suggestions. I want an introductory course, and would prefer not to be the youngest by 20 years (I'm 24). Do you know if any colleges or local wine stores offer them? I would prefer to stay in the District if possible. Thanks

The Going Out Gurus: Hi Georgetown. You've got a few options on wine classes: the Washington Wine Academy, DC's Wine Brats and the Wine Tasting Association. I'm checking out the Wine Tasting Association's horseback riding/winery tour next weekend. I'll keep you posted on the turnout. -- Maura

Dupont Circle, Washington, D.C.: Which of the many Ethiopian places in Adams Morgan is the best these days? My mom wants to experience this cuisine for Mother's Day and it's been ages since I've been to any of them.

The Going Out Gurus: Meskerem?

The Hill: Hey Jen, any word on Screen on the Green yet?

The Going Out Gurus: Anne and I are on the case, and have confirmed that Screen on the Green will return this summer. We're still waiting to confirm dates and other details. We'll pass that info on as soon as we have it.
Also, for the reader who asked which theaters in the area are THX-certified, here's your long-awaited list. (If you want a tutorial on what it means to be THX-certified, go to thx.com.) -- Jen

Arlington, Va.: Any word on the Radiohead/Polyphonic Spree rumors that were mentioned last week?

The Going Out Gurus: Hi Arlington. No word on the rumors, but it seems extremely unlikely to me that Radiohead will play at the Polyphonic Spree shows. It's more likely that Radiohead will just announce its own shows at some point. - Joe

Capitol Hill, Washington, D.C.: Has anyone been to see the play "1776" at Ford's Theatre?

The Going Out Gurus: I (Jen) haven't seen it, but The Post's Peter Marks gave it a pleasant review. Anyone else have an opinion on our singing founding fathers?

Washington, D.C.: Hey Gurus, always love your advice.

Suggestions for happy hour tomorrow? Looking for cheap beer, a fun social 20-something crowd, in the District. Tried MCCXXIII last week for their $15 open bar and loved it, just want something a little more casual this time around. Also, Fritz, do you need an apprentice or something? You have the best job in the world, I aspire to be you.

Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Washington. I was at McFadden's last Friday for their happy hour. Very social crowd, and an open bar for a $5 cover, I believe. (Open bar is from 6-7, and I was there earlier, but forgot to get in on the deal.) Mackey's, Madhatter and Lucky Bar should also fill your needs. -- Fritz

Meridian Hill, Washington, D.C.: I love all the new stores popping up in Adams Morgan and the U Street corridor. There's also a store in Georgetown that opened a month ago -- Sugar. YAY! Finally. I stopped in at NANA on U off of 16th -- new and vintage in a basement store -- cool decor. Owner was very cool. She said she's been open one month. Good bags, jewelry, ponytail holders, dresses, and women's boyshort/camisole sets. Also, Shake Your Booty is open on Tuesday during the month of May. I heard they're going to do special promotions on Saturdays in the evening. Does all of this sound about right to ya'll?

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, Sugar (1633 Wisconsin Ave, NW 202/333-5331)is super cute -- home for the moment to some strapless dresses by Ruth ($106-ish) that are absolutely adorable. Sugar also carried Tibi, Cynthia Steffe, Beth Bowley, Derrick Green and Fever jeans and half a dozen other New York labels.

NANA wasn't open the last time I walked by but it's looks to be a welcome twin to Wild Women Wear Red further down the block. I just called Erin at Shake Your Booty and yes not only is the shop open on Tuesdays this month but she and the girls will be hosting "parties" between 7 and 9 p.m. on Saturdays. While Erin hasn't finalized the details, there will be off-beat sales along the lines of "15% off everything pink," she suggested. That's not a given, just a tease of what you'll find. Sounds to me like you're a shoe in for Janet's Sales and Discoveries column and the Home weekly e-mail that she sends to her friends. -- Kate

Ellicott City, Md.: GOG: I am taking my sister out for dinner today. We were thinking Chinese. Where could we go for good but cheap Chinese around the College Park area? And what would be your definition of cheap (i.e. for two people: under $20 or $30, etc.)?

The Going Out Gurus: How's about A&J in Rockville? Cheap and good. Under $20. -- Alexa

Washington, D.C.: Anybody know where to get a good wiffleball game? Always play with a bunch of friends, usually with more beers than actual playing, but would love to hear of a wiffleball tourney or something. A friend in California says they have a huge on in San Francisco at Golden Gate Park every year. Any ideas?

The Going Out Gurus: Other states do have leagues that play with that trademarked die-cut plastic ball ... do Maryland and Virginia? Batters, I'm pitching this question to you. -- Anne

K Street, Washington, D.C.: Have any of you all been to see "Shear Madness" at the Kennedy Center? Worth it to take out of town guests? THANKS!

The Going Out Gurus: I (Jen) actually took an out-of-town crew to see "Shear Madness" a few years ago, and they definitely enjoyed it. (If you can tell the crew to mention your guests' names in the show, they'll like it even more.) As far as whether or not your companions will dig it, it depends on what they're hoping to get out of it. If they just want to see a basic entertaining show, it's a good bet. If you want to show them the finest theater D.C. has to offer, I'd look for something else at the Kennedy Center, Studio, Arena or any of the many other excellent theater companies in the area.

McPherson Square, Washington, D.C.: Hi GOGs,

Two questions please.

I am really itching to get my groove on this weekend. I want a place where I can dance to some good hip-hop, house, and even brit-pop -- just good stuff, you know? For example, Pharcyde, Tribe, Garbage, Blur. You know, all the goodies. Where to go? Any of those chic chic clubs good?

Also, I recently did the Woodley Park house tour and enjoyed it a lot. Do you know the details for the Adams Morgan one? Or any other tours focusing on D.C. architecture?

Thanks for your consistent help gurus. You rock!

The Going Out Gurus: Ah, McP, you'd like something that mixes genres? Good luck. It's getting harder and harder to find clubs that mix anything beyond salsa and commercial hip-hop. I think Dream and VIP are great at what they do, but you'll hear more Wayne Wonder than Pharcyde. At the Black Cat, it's Britpop upstairs and more dance music downstairs -- electronic dance music, I'm told.

Let's see if anyone else can suggest a place that meets your requirements.

As for the second part of your question, Maura adds:

Here are upcoming house tours. The DC Heritage Foundation and Washington Walks offer weekly tours of neighborhoods and don't forget the new City Museum. Formerly the Historical Society of Washington, the City Museum will offer all sorts of tours and events. We can't wait.

Wine Lover in Washington, D.C.: Hey Gurus! Thanks for all of your tips, tricks, kibbles, and bits. On the last Monday of every month, Chef Geoff's reduces their select wines by 50 percent. I hear there are a few other places in town that often offer half-price wine nights. Any ideas which ones those are so we can get in on a great deal? Cheers!

The Going Out Gurus: WL, The Little Fountain Cafe has half price wine nights on Wednesdays -- we think -- and for a small fee at the Evening Star Cafe, Kate believes you can bring a bottle in from the wine shop next door. Good deals all around. -- Maura

D.C. Summer Sessions . . .: What gives, Gurus? You guys hear anything about Sessions for this summer? Or was it just some kind of one-off?

Oh, and what are some other cool District events that combine the outdoors, music and drinkin'?

The Going Out Gurus: There hasn't been a word about DC Summer Sessions for this year, so it may have been abandoned altogether (the old web site no longer works). That's one less outdoor music and drinking option for the summer.

- Joe

Arlington, VA: Hey Gurus,

My boyfriend and I like to meet for lunch occasionally. He works in the Federal Triangle area, and we prefer to go some place within walking distance (Chinatown is about as far as we're willing to go in one direction). He is not very adventurous when it comes to "exotic" cuisines and prefers a "meat and potatoes" kind of menu, whereas I like to try new places whenever possible. Can you recommend some interesting lunch places in the area that won't bankrupt us (no more than $30 for lunch)? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: You might like Matchbox. It's new, has pizzas, burgers, grilled meats and the like. -- Alexa

Fairfax, Va.: How does some one contact you to invite you to a new event in D.C.?

The Going Out Gurus: First of all, we attend the opening of envelopes so a new event in D.C. would be a treat. The best way to get in touch with us, wholly or on a G by G basis, is to go to the help desk -- you'll find it on our front in the "Talk to Us" box. -- Kate

Link Please!: I can't find a review of "Rent" on your site that was at the Warner Theater last week. I saw it and am curious as to a professional's opinion! Thank you!

The Going Out Gurus: It's not on the site anymore because the show's left town. If you e-mail me, I'll send you the text of the review from February's production (same cast, I believe). I'd paste it in here but don't want to bog down the chat with a long post.
No one from the paper reviewed it last week because the show was just here in February. I saw it, though, and have to say I was a bit disappointed. Some changes were made (talking between songs that I don't remember from previous productions). Plus, personally, I was a little distracted by the constant screaming from the "Rent"-head contingent. I'm all for enthusiastic theater-goers, but there's gotta be moderation, kids. And that's one to grow on. -- Jen

Weekend Getaways: Hey GOG's, love the chats. This isn't really a going out question but I was hoping you might have some ideas for us. My boyfriend and I are dying to get out of town for Memorial Day weekend, but we're both low on cash and need to do something really cheap. We want to go somewhere relaxing, but not too desolate where there's nothing to do. We could be up for camping or heading somewhere uncrowded where the hotel rooms will be cheap. Any ideas?

The Going Out Gurus: Be prepared, WG, because Memorial Day weekend probably means crowds ... at least on the roads, so avoid heading east to beaches. Check out the Escapes archives in the Travel section for some ideas. Here's some campground options in Maryland and Virginia. Who has an uncrowded weekend retreat to share? -- Anne

Alexandria, Va. 22314: Again, how old are you guys? Do you have a reason for NEVER answering this question? I have submitted it at least 10 times. Are you embarassed?

The Going Out Gurus: Relax stalker. We actually answered this a few weeks ago. We range in age from 27 to 37. Now, how old are you? Are you embarrassed?

Rockville, Md.: Someone is taking me to Cafe Bethesda tommorow night for b-day? I've heard its pricey... is there a dress code? Also, what's the food like? I looked up the review on your site but its rather old.

Oh, and Bucca Di Beppo, run, the other way, as fast as you can. I had the worst meal of my life there and had the rudest waiter!

The Going Out Gurus: Hi Rockville. Cafe Bethesda is a sweet -- and consistently tasty -- spot for a little celebration. It's a little on the fancy side, but you don't need to dress up too much (for him, no jacket required).

And yes, stay away from the Bucca. -- Maura

Arlington, VA: Okay, I keep hearing about how a must-do thing is to have drinks on the deck of the Hotel Washington? Is this view really worth it? Are drink prices there really outrageous? Is this a fancy place, or could I come in business casual (more towards casual) clothes?

The Going Out Gurus: By all means, Arlington, go in business casual clothes. The view is great if you're from the area, because as often as we all go by the monuments and the White House, they look different -- more serene, even -- when you aren't viewing them from the street. Now, drinks are kind of overpriced ($6 for a gin and tonic, I think), but you can just do for one cocktail and say you've done it. -- Fritz

Adams Morgan, Washington, D.C.: Hey Fritz, what do you think of the Chinatown Hooters? I think it rules. We split out of RFD the other night and headed across the street. It's like walking into a different world, sans pretentious yuppies.

The Going Out Gurus: Ha. You know, Adams Morgan, I wrote my review of Hooters under similar circumstances. Sometimes, you really just want cold beer and wings. -- Fritz

Re: Cheap wine: If memory serves, Sam & Harry's wine list is half-price on the weekends from Memorial Day til Sept... Call and check but it's a GREAT deal - splurge without going crazy or try out a $100 bottle you would never get otherwise. And Lavandou in Cleveland Park has BYOB with no corkage fee on one night a week (Wed?) - I'd call and check.

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks, Cheap Wine. I did call and check. That half price bottle special at Sam and Harry's usually begins weekends after July 4. And Lavandou offers no corkage fees on byob's every Monday night. -- Maura

DC Cube: I saw the movies for Screen on the Green listed in OnTap last week. Get with it, gurus! They start July 9 and include "An American In Paris," "A Streetcar Named Desire," "A Patch of Blue," "The Maltese Falcon," and "Meet Me In St. Louis."

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for passing this along. Until I get an official word from the organizers as to the line-up, though, I can't post the Screen on the Green info. This schedule may be accurate (and I hope it is, because it sounds good) but I'm waiting for word from the horse's mouth, so to speak, before confirming. Now, why the horse didn't speak to us sooner, I have no idea. -- Jen

"Lilya 4-Ever": Love the chats, Gurus. Will the film be playing anywhere else but the American Film Institute (too far)?

The Going Out Gurus: As far as I know, this was only playing at the AFI last week. I say was because I believe it's gone as of tomorrow. -- Jen

Curious Neighbor: What's been going on at MCCXXIII on Wednesday evenings? The last two weeks when I've been walking home around 6:00 or 6:30, there have been lines out the door.

The Going Out Gurus: That's Flirt, a happy hour with an open bar and free buffet. I was in last night, sipping on a snifter of Courvoisier and snacking on rice and peas and warm bread. Celebs like Michael Jordan and P. Diddy have stopped in. Really fun night, and I'll be writing more about it soon. -- Fritz

Re: the Hotel Washington: I always found it cool to see the snipers on top of The White House from that vantage point. I think the view lives up to all its hype.

The Going Out Gurus: True.

Eastern Market, Washington, D.C.: I wanted to check out the new steakhouse on the Hill, Charlie Palmer's, Saturday night (its opening night). I called that afternoon for reservations and they said they were booked, but to stop by in case there were any cancellations. Wife and I got there and the place was half empty. They said they didn't have any cancellations, but could seat us in the lounge area. We declined and went to The District Chophouse instead (which was very good). Out of curiosity, we stopped back on the way home and the place was still half-empty. Since there are almost always no-shows, don't you think they should have seated us?

The Going Out Gurus: Yes.

Possible Mother's Day Brunch: Cheesecake Factory often has a Sunday brunch and maybe this weekend they will cater to moms everywhere...now I think it is overpriced and full of pretentious Chevy Chase teenagers, but it is an option for what one poster wanted.

The Going Out Gurus: A vote for cheescake.

Washington, D.C.: A couple of my friends and I are a bit tight on money. What can we do in D.C. that requires little money spending? Are there any free or cheap concerts, festivals, or food? Remember... free is good!

The Going Out Gurus: Free and cheap IS good. In fact, we're such fans of spendthrifery, we built a page dedicated to helping you find ways to save money.

Free and cheap concerts are on the horizon. Our summer guide launches on Monday and it's stacked with ideas like Shakespeare Free for All (a worthy "Hamlet," trust me) and outdoor movie festivals. A connected friend assures me that sponsorship for Screen on the Green has been secured and that the popular movies on the Mall series will be coming back. There are free movies almost nightly that the Library of Congress. They are mid-way through a series of "Pre-Code Musicals" from the early 1930s (where the chorus girls get almost naughty.) Festivals can be a deal, but again, there are more and more as the summer season unfolds.

This weekend, the annual sheepdog and border collie trials at beautiful yellow Oatlands south of Leesburg will set you back only $8. Free food is harder to find, but there are deals. Our Fritz has written a bit for tomorrow's Weekend section about the reduced-priced happy hours specials at Hotels Topaz, Rouge and Helix.

Last weekend, I dorked it up playing serious mini golf at Lake Ridge Park in Woodbridge, VA. 18 holes are $3. Amature par is, I believe, 45. -- Kate

Springfield, Va.: Are there any Scottish bars in the D.C. area?

The Going Out Gurus: Well, the Royal Mile Pub in Wheaton has a huge selection of single malt Scotch. It's worth a trip on Thursday nights for the Scotch tastings.

Avoid the dreadful Scottish place in Old Town. Alexa and I agree you'll be much happier that way. -- Fritz

$60 brunch: I say go to Melrose. Really classy setting and excellent food. It's my brunch spot when the parents come to town. But it's kind of late for Mother's Day and they may be full. Still, it's the best.

The Going Out Gurus: Classy. Yes. And I should know.

Eastern Market house tour: Thanks for those suggestions. Do you have more info, times, price, etc for this weekend?

The Going Out Gurus: Yes I do. Tickets are $30 a piece! And are available from a kiosk in Eastern Market on Saturday and Sunday. The hours are Saturday, 5-8 p.m., Sunday from noon until 5. There will be transportation provided on Sunday only. -- Kate

Washington, D.C.: GURUS!!

This isn't your usual area, but you guys are musical. Anyway, does anyone know where I can take a relatively cheap guitar lesson? By relatively cheap, I mean less than $40 per half hour. Thank you!

The Going Out Gurus: Hello DC. Have you tried the House of Musical Traditions in Takoma Park. They might have listings of guitar teachers. Can anyone else recommend a place. -- Joe

Arlington, Va.: Aren't those movies the same from last year or two years ago. I know for a fact I watched "The Maltese Falcon" at Screens on the Green in the last two years.

The Going Out Gurus: This is what I mean about verifying from the horse's mouth. I (Jen) still don't have information from the organizers about what this year's line-up is. Anne and I expect to have it soon. Once we do, we'll let you know. I wouldn't think they'd want to screen movies they've just recently shown. (Now that you mention it, that line-up did sound familiar...)

Washington, D.C.: Hello,
I was walking down 35th (I think) in Georgetown, and I came across two little Italian restaurants, Paper Moon and Restaurant Filomena. They are so much cheaper than the rest of the places in Georgetown, and they are so cute. Does anyone know if they have good food? I always like to find new places in that area, especially if they don't break the bank. Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Hello, Washington. I was at Paper Moon not too long ago and had a rather lovely lunch, but nothing extraordinary. It's consistently good, which is more than you can say for some of its pricier neighbors. -- Maura

Wine Tasting in Baltimore, Md.: Just a heads-up for chatters and wine drinkers that might live closer to Baltimore -- D.C. WineBrats is hosting a wine tasting with Mondavi Winery in Baltimore next Wednesday. Mondavi is launching their new line, Select Vineyard Series, with an "essence tasting" at the Havana Club. Check out our website, http://dc.winebrats.org, for all the details.

Thanks, Gurus!

The Going Out Gurus: Since you asked, here's the plug.

Re: wine lover: Every Sunday, Clyde's of Georgetown has half priced bottles of wine.

The Going Out Gurus: More deals.

I'd rather be on a beach...: Okay Gurus-- best margaritas in D.C.?

The Going Out Gurus: We were just talking about this (again) earlier in the week. Kim O'Donnel and I collaborated on a list a while back, but it doesn't appear to be on the site any longer. I like the ones at Vida (they have a huge tequila list), but know many people who prefer the swirled ones at Lauriol Plaza and Cactus Cantina. I had a good one with blood orange juice at 15 ria, but purists might scoff.

Now, let's ask the crowd where they go. Crowd? -- Fritz

U Street: On last week's chat, someone mentioned a Starbuck's at 13th and U streets. I live at 13th and U streets, and I see no Starbucks. I'm terribly confused....

The Going Out Gurus: I think they meant 16th and U.

First year in Washington, D.C.: I'm looking for some good reasons NOT to go out of town for Fourth of July weekend. Is Independence Day in the Capitol something special, or not so much and ok to miss?

Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Watching the fireworks from the Washington Monument grounds is something you must do at least once if you live here. Where else can you celebrate the country's birth while surrounded by monuments to the thinkers who made it happen? The sea of humanity covering the Mall, the multitudes of people there from all over the world, is a compelling scene for me. If that's not persuasive, it's a big enough deal to be broadcast on public television and in streaming video on our site. -- Anne

Alexandria, Va.: Hi. I have a friend in town that loves sushi. Do you have any recommendations on where to take her tonight, preferably in the Northern Virginia area or D.C.? I did a search for sushi, but didn't come up with any recommendations -- just a list. Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: A search for 'sushi' brings up a list of 50 or so. If you organize the list by clicking on "our picks," you get this. Tons of recommendations there.

To McP: The DJ at Kingpin spins great hip-hop on Saturday nights (none of that mainstream hip-pop). Not much room for dancing though.

The Going Out Gurus: Yep. There's good ska there, too. But what about the rest of the requirements?

Mt. Pleasant sniffin out some sushi: Awright. What's the word on the new takeout sushi joint in Adams Morgan? Seems a bit sketchy to me.

The Going Out Gurus: You know, Mt.P, I've been twice and dig Pacific. The fish is fresh, and they just nabbed one of the sushi chefs from Uni to make your maki. I remember the chef saying they make their own soy sauce and prepare their own rice. The menu is short, but if you ask nicely, they can alter the rolls or nigiri for you. Be sure to ask about specials, and go early for the happy hour Kirin. -- Fritz

On the U St. stores...: I just want to second that - I walked by the stretch of stores the other night by Black Cat and wanted to lick the window - those stores look fantastic!!!

The Going Out Gurus: Go Mama Go! and Home Rule really rock the block.

Best Margaritas: La Loma on the Senate side on Capitol Hill. And they are so friendly.

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks.

New York, N.Y.: In D.C. last weekend (my old stomping grounds). Made it to Savino's. (New since I've been away.) What's the deal with their $25 gold-speckled martini. Waitress said it had "secret bar ingredients" in it. Is it worth the hefty tab?

The Going Out Gurus: Not really. I've tasted it, and wasn't really blown away. I don't think Tom Sietsema was, either. (Drinking gold flakes makes me think of college-era shots with Goldschlager.)

At Savino's, I'm much more impressed with the Lychee and Blood Orange "martinis." -- Fritz

Uptown: Re: 1223 on Wednesday nights. Wow, that was a good looking crowd last night! I was meaning to ask what was up there. Watching from a plastic outdoor chair next door at Lucky Bar, I was wishing was on the other side of the chain border.

The Going Out Gurus: Well, you should have, Uptown. Maybe I'll see you there next week? I'll be in the buffet line. -- Fritz

Embarrassed: I'm embarrassed to ask this, but I sorta want to see the American Idol tour when it comes to DC. Where and when is it and are tickets on sale yet?

The Going Out Gurus: Embarrassed, you should be ashamed of yourself. Still nothing official but it looks like the tour will be in town July 28. No location has been announced yet. And tickets are not on sale yet either. -- Joe

Margaritas: I recently went to Alero for the first time and was impressed by their excellent margaritas. Also, i used to do happy hour at tequilla grill (slightly embarrassed to admit that) but thought their nachos and margaritas used to be pretty good. Stopped in there a couple weeks ago and - EW! They now top all their margaritas with a hefty dash of orange juice!

The Going Out Gurus: You all love your margaritas. I'll post a few responses here, and will keep them in mind for our margarita guide.

Bethesda, Md.: Cactus Canitina swirly margaritas are by far the best in town

Paper Moon -- I agree with it's consistency, that has always been my problem with places in Georgetown. Took my mom there she liked it because it was not too crowded and noisy.

Sushi -- Bonsai in Shirlington is the best I have found.

The Going Out Gurus: Bethesda, full of helpful hints.

Margaritas: ...are my most favorite drink! Agree that the swirls from Cactus and Lauriol are good. Guapo's has some good, VERY strong margaritas, so be careful. Cafe Deluxe lets you top your margarita with interesting additions such as sangria or chambord... really good and I always get asked what I am drinking by others. Austin Grill has good strawberry margaritas, the lime ones can be very sour. Cheers!

The Going Out Gurus:

Margaritas: Do NOT get them at Alamo Grill. Yuck. However, ironically since it is a chain, the one's at Chevy's are quite good.

The Going Out Gurus:

Farragut Area, D.C.: Help! It’s my boss' birthday next Monday and we are stumped as to what to do. Last year, we took him to an O's game, so we obviously want to do something different. Some things to keep in mind: not too expensive, if the location is not close to downtown then it will have to be after 5:00, and there are 8 of us in our office.

Thanks .

The Going Out Gurus: Have a pool party -- just two stops from Farragut West. Continental is new and offers happy hour deals every weekday. And ladies play free on Mondays. -- Anne

Washington, D.C.: Hello, gurus. Some of my European friends who live in DC and don't get outside the city much want me to show them some of our area's finest American kitsch -- things they can do only in America, or things that are really American. I'm thinking of taking them to some Virginia diner and then maybe bowling. Or to watch donuts being made at Krispy Kreme. I figured y'all would have some brilliant ideas I hadn't thought of...

The Going Out Gurus: Bob & Edith's is a good place to start or finish as they never close. Beers and a movie up the street at the Arlington Cinema n' Draft House is fun too. They're showing "Two Towers" and my current crush, "Old School."

Anne visited the new Krispy Kreme recently and says it's missing some of the charm of the old location. Hells bells, the doughnuts are still supafresh.

Do you have wheels? Mount Vernon is a goodie, very earnestly American. You could have a tremendous time loafing around any one of the small historic towns not 100 miles away. I was lucky enough to play mini golf at Putt Putt in Fredricksburg, VA. They have the full set-up with waterfalls and unfortunate concrete animals. Fred also brags Confederate Cemetary and legions of pretty shops, including a drug store on the main drag that pulls sodas. The town's jewel is Carl's the frozen custard stand at 2200 Princess Anne's Street where the only mistake I made was ordering a small cone. A large sets you back $2.19.

Lemme know where you get to. -- Kate

re twelve twenty three: Dude, just stay at Lucky Bar. You'll get plenty of hot chick spillover from 1223 by the end of the night, you wont wait in line and pay a small fortune, and you won't be dressed up like a tool.

The Going Out Gurus: A small fortune? Even if you don't have the e-mail invite, the cover is like $5 and includes an OPEN BAR with Courvoisier, Belvedere, Absolut, Hennessey, etc. All you do is tip until 9 p.m. or so. (Of course, then you'll start paying a small fortune ...)

P.S. There's really nothing wrong with wearing a suit or a nice shirt and slacks after work, is there? -- Fritz

RE: Savino's Gold Martini: Thanks for the low down. Got that Maria and Brittany?

The Going Out Gurus: Yeah, got that?

In defense of Alamo Grill Margaritas: They have cheap-o 3 dollar happy hour margaritas, but these are frozen.

the ones on the rcks aren't that bad for 5 bucks.

Rio Grande in Bethesda has awesome margaritas but are a complete rip off at around 9 bucks (yet I almost always have one, cos I am a sucker).

The Going Out Gurus: More margaritas coming through ...

Matrix: I heard it's showing on IMAX a couple weeks after it opens in regular theaters. Do you know if any of our IMAX theaters will show it?

The Going Out Gurus: Still waiting to hear whether it will show in D.C. My most recent information (from Warner Bros.) is that the IMAX version will open six weeks after the regular one (so around late June) and they're still negotiating which venues will carry it. I (Jen) will let you know more once I know more.

HELP needed in Gaithersburg, Md.!: I need some suggestions. I'm doing some last minute planning for dinner on Mother's Day. What are some of your favorite restaurants in Bethesda (any cuisine, price no factor)? I wanted to go to Addie's but they're all booked, unfortunately.

Another question: A group of us friends (age in the late 20s) will be getting together the weekend of May 17th to celebrate a friend's birthday. Some people are from out of town. We've done all the museum sights, and have hit Adams Morgon and bethesda. Would like to try something new this time around. Suggestions for day time activities? How about night-time? We enjoy good drinks, laid-back atmosphere (not too shi-shi), and dancing. Last time around hit Adams Morgon and had a blast, but want to try something new. Suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Gaithersburg, for Mom, I'd try Grapeseed, Black's (same owners as Addies), La Ferme (in Chevy Chase, close enough). Jaleo, Green Papaya and Persimmon are also good bets.

As for your out of town guests, you could try Wine in the Woods during the day. And for your evening, head down to U Street if you haven't already checked out Kuna, Local 16 or Saint Ex. Depending on your mood, round out your evening at the Studio Theater or the Black Cat. They'll be impressed. -- Maura

Arlington, VA: Iota has half price bottles and glasses of wine on Monday nights. The deal includes everything but "reserve" wines. It is a great deal!

The Going Out Gurus: We like it.

Surlygirl: I won a free pass to the "Chicago" sing-a-long tonight at Loews Georgetown. Show's at 7:30, but what time should we get there to ensure that we get decent seats?

The Going Out Gurus: Because this was a promotional event, there may be tons of people there. In these situations, I always err on the side of caution and get there an hour or so beforehand. Now if this were a "Moulin Rouge" sing-a-long, I might be camping out the night before. Have fun! -- Jen

Arlington, Va: Hey Gurus. About the upcoming Bruce concert at FedEx field -- I saw him last summer at MCI. Will the show basically be the same? (not that the Boss isn't worth seeing twice, of course).

The Going Out Gurus: Hello Arlington, this is Joe. I hope the show changes a bit for the outdoor venues. Maybe he'll play a little longer. I saw four shows last year and so I'm looking for something different.

Vienna, Va.: Hi gurus. Have you guys heard anything about a theater group called Cherry Red Productions at the Source Theatre on 14th. I recently won tix to a performance and wanted some scoop.
Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: Cherry Red is not-quite-famous for it's off-kilter, dirty bertie rep productions. On offer these days, "What's the Frequency, Kenneth?" a drama based on the real-life mugging of Dan Rather and a burlesque show that starts after midnight on Saturdays. There are usually references to poop and plenty of four-letter words (some familiar) at Cherry Red shows. "Vaudeville Night Acts" might be liberal with a nipple or two. Lord knows what "Penetrator" brings to life. How can you pick just one? -- Kate

Margaritas....or Martinis..: Where can you get the best martinis in town?

The Going Out Gurus: Here's a short list to start: Ozio, Felix, Topaz, Helix Lounge, Lounge 201, Sam and Harry's, Degrees (at the Ritz Carlton) ...

God, I'm so bored...: I am a DC native so I have literally been there, done that. My fiance (also a native) and I are sick to death of the martini/wine tasting/cigar bar/club scene (not a very original thing anymore) - we want to do something fun this weekend without leaving the area. Annapolis is an option, but there are only so many crabs we can eat and so much beer we can drink (well...). PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE can someone suggest something FUN to do this weekend? We know all the bars, we still do happy hours, so how about something with a twist? (please no murder mystery dinners, we're in our early 30s, not 50s). Thanks, guys! You're great!

The Going Out Gurus: Do you want bars or is it the bar scene you're sick of? If it's the latter, pack a picnic and head to the Baltimore Blues Festival in Patterson Park this weekend for a change of scene. If you need honesty in a bar, I love Renzo's in Silver Spring. Visions (only partially a bar) is hosting the 48 Hour Film Project through tomorrow night. I can't promise it will be fun, but it will definitely be different. -- Anne

washingon, dc: The link to the description of Flirt says its for African American professionals. Would they hate on a white girl like me?

The Going Out Gurus: Not as long as you like hip-hop and don't hate on anyone else. I've seen white folks there before (I was far from the only one last night) without it being a big deal. Same when I used to go to the happy hour at the Gardens. I mean, Harrison Ford went there. -- Fritz

Uptown: Being a woman, I'm not exactly seeking "hot chick spill over."

The Going Out Gurus: There has to be some hot dude spill over as well. It's not all one-way traffic at Flirt.

American Idol: According to their website, tickets go on sale May 17. I'm embarrassed too, but I'm going.

The Going Out Gurus: And there you have it, folks.

She gets better every week...: And now Kate admits to liking "Old School".....

The Going Out Gurus: Admits? I'd be watching it right now if it wasn't for this lame chat. Will was good, but Vince was sublime. Now, put on your earmuffs!

Music lessons!: You gurus are always overlooking the only community music school in the area-- Levine School of Music. Locations in NW DC, MD, and VA.

www.levineschool.org

The Going Out Gurus: We've just officially stopped overlooking it.

I'm Not Alexandria, Va.: But I'm 42, hope I'm not too old for this chat. I still do have a life, even at this advanced age.

The Going Out Gurus: Hey, there's no age requirement for this chat. There is, however, a height requirement: "You must be this tall to participate in Got Plans?" I (Jen) barely made the cut.

Arlington, VA: Gurus! Thanks to your tech. department for changing the entertainment guide so the search criterion doesn't change everytime you mouse over restaurants or bars. That was such a pain! It's so much better now.

The Going Out Gurus: We haven't got time for that pain anymore. Glad you like the change.

Happy Hour Help! (please?): Gurus,

A few of us are considering trying to hit ESL around 6 p.m. tomorrow for a low-key happy hour, but since it's casual Friday at the office we weren't sure if their "no jeans" policy would be in effect that early in the evening, or if there would be a cover. Any advice?

Also, what's the best time to hit 201? I tried to go on a Saturday, before your feature ran, and there wasn't a seat in the house!

Thanks Gurus!

The Going Out Gurus: The "no jeans" policy is always at the doorman's discretion, whether it's 6 p.m. or 1 a.m. I'd play it safe and dress well. I hate taking chances when I'm with a group meeting at ESL or anywhere with a dress code.

As for 201, I like early at happy hour (say, at 5) or later, maybe 7:15-7:30. That's when you'll have your best chance of finding a seat. Also, I really don't love the back room, but there are often more open seats there than in the front. -- Fritz

Adams: excuse me? Indiana Jones was at Repub. Gardens?

what?

The Going Out Gurus: Yeah. A few years ago. Marc Barnes has the photos.

Washington, DC: Are you working on a directory of summer concerts (indoor and out)? Thanks for a great chat!!

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, we are working on a summer guide, which includes a concert and movie guide. It's coming very soon. Patience, darlin', patience.

McLean, Va.: I'm eight-and-a-half months pregnant and my husband and I are thinking of planning a nice weekend before the baby arrives. I am not allowed to travel more than an hour away. We were thinking of going to the Laurel Brigade Inn in old town Leesburg for dinner and maybe spend the night. I'm not sure they do dinner anymore and can't find a good website. Do you know if they do dinner and do you recommend them? Any other local, but not too expensive, B&B's you'd recommend for dinner and a night out before the baby turns our lives upside down?

The Going Out Gurus: If your getaway can be an urban one, listen up, because my knowledge of cheap B&Bs is limited to the District. I've put my parents up at Kalorama Guest House, and it's a sweet deal. It's one operation, but they have a location in Woodley Park, too. Rooms are charming, big and come with a guaranteed parking space. -- Anne

Arlington, Va.: Where is a good place for a martini in Georgetown? I have heard about Ozio's but we are not really into that crowd I don't think. Looking for a place that is not overly expensive, not overly trendy, and more casual where two people can sit and talk and hear each other. Any ideas? If you can add in a piano player than you are truly the gods of going out.

The Going Out Gurus: The Four Seasons isn't overly trendy, has average prices for martinis (under $10) and a piano player. You might want to at least stop by the Ritz in Georgetown for one drink, just so you can see the gorgeous interior. -- Fritz

Cleveland Park: Alero margaritas? Yuck. Had one last night and almost gagged on all the sour mix.

Now JALEO margaritas... those are the best.

The Going Out Gurus: More-garitas.

Adams Morgan, Washington, D.C.: What's the latest on Fort Reno 2003? When does it start? When is the line-up announced?

The Going Out Gurus: Hey A-M. They're still working on the lineups, but the first show is on June 21 (yes, a Saturday), then Mondays and Thursdays until August.

No, there's no date for Fugazi yet.

Dupont Circle, Washington, D.C.: So, my two pals and I -- all 30-ish singles -- have given up the online dating ship. Now I think we ought to trawl local happy hours for new folks to know et al. Note that this is not desperation, merely an activity that may end up with one or more of us getting a nice date with a nice fella.

I've not been to, well, any D.C. happy hours -- from FOTZ and Smithsonian to McFaddens and MCCXXIII. Where should we embark on our search for intelligent-and-fun-and-cute male life?

The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Dupont. I'm all for going to events like Fonz and 1869 Society and Smithsonian young benefactors. Instant conversation opportunites abound, and I know some people who find it easier to mingle with the opposite sex at those events instead of casually eyeing someone from across the room at McFaddens or getting freaky on the dance floor at the VIP Club. Just one guy's opinion, though. -- Fritz

W-DC: Gurus--do you guys know any graduates of the local DJ school Metatrack Studio (http://www.metatrackstudios.com/)?

Sounds well suited for turntable enthusiasts who are scared to chuck down the coin for decks of their own.

The Going Out Gurus: Sadly, Metatrack has closed because the owner is moving to Spain. But I know a few people who took lessons there. It's a real shame. -- Fritz

WDC: The new Ritz in Georgetown makes a really good grapefruit margarita. They only use fresh lime juice which is key.

The Going Out Gurus: More...

Petworth: I like the margaritas at mixtec

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks, Pet.

Arlington, Va.: Hello...

I just relocated here from New York, N.Y. about two months ago and I've been putting off a lot of important things, like getting my hair cut. Gotta do it now -- people are asking me if I wanna play hackey-sack, if you know what I mean. Is there any place in the area where a male can get a fairly enlightened haircut on a Saturday or Sunday without having to book weeks in advance? I don't need a spa treatment or seaweed smoothie as part of the deal; just need a good cut.

The Going Out Gurus: It's not close to your hood, but in Dupont Circle is a place called VSL (1607 Connecticut Ave. 202/332-3757). My well-groomed friend Pierre recommends VSL and the product prolific Roche Salon in Georgetown. VSL is a haircut cafeteria: strictly no frills. They cut an army of heads, mostly mens, every day. Appointments are unneccesary, you'll wait ten minutes max. Your whole hairy affair can come to an end for $23. Then you'll be free (and groomed) to explore the sincere delights in and around the Dupont/Adams Morgan corridor. -- Kate

The Going Out Gurus: Our hour runneth over, so we're out of here. We're so glad we had this time together. See you next week.
