Got Plans?
With the Entertainment Guide Staff
washingtonpost.com

Thursday, May 29, 2003; 1 p.m. ET

Every Thursday at 1 p.m. ET, washingtonpost.com's Entertainment Guide experts share their best bets for local flavor, great dates and family fun. Got plans? Great. Need plans? Just ask. We have the skinny on the bars and clubs, concerts, kitchens, theaters and special events that keep life interesting. We're going out gurus, and we're at your service.

Of course, we're happy to answer questions about local entertainment, but we need to hear from you, too. Introduce us to the coolest DJ or the fastest bartender you've encountered. Sound off on the week's best concert or the city's best burger. Tell us about the best place to amuse little kids or a big art fan. Together we can plan fun ways to spend weekdays, weekends, dates and holidays. The pleasure is ours, and yours.

Each week a different guru will act as host or hostess, but the entire staff is at your service. If you're looking for more ideas, see the Entertainment Guide.

Submit your questions and comments before or during the discussion.

Editor's Note: Washingtonpost.com moderators retain editorial control over Live Online discussions and choose the most relevant questions for guests and hosts; guests and hosts can decline to answer questions.

The Going Out Gurus: Welcome home fun fans! It's time for another hour of first class, Grade A, shiny, sexy going out advice. On today's panel includes but is not limited to Alexa, Anne, Fritz, Janet, Jen, Joe, Maura, me (Kate) and you, you, you and especially you. Because you think of everything: Do you know that less than 2 days remain to nominate your 50 favorite spots in our second annual Best Bests Reacher's Choice contest? Categories include: Best Bar, Most Romantic Restaurant, Best Place to Hold a Batchlorette Party, Best Women's Clothing Shop. Nominate in even one category and you're eligible to win $100 (yes, ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS!) to spend as you wish. We'll (truthfully I'll) count the votes and then it's up to you to vote for your Best Bets in June and July. So chop, chop.

Uptown: What would be your choice for a "cost is no option" dinner tonight in NW DC? We'd like something with the fun atmosphere of Cafe Milano...or maybe a non-chain steakhouse...or...? I'm open to suggestion. Best areas include Dupont, Downtown and Foggy Bottom. Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: I don't think there's anywhere in this city quite like Cafe Milano. But if it were moi, I'd go somewhere like Cafe Atlantico or Zaytinya or Oceanaire or Johnny's Half Shell. -- Alexa

Silver Spring, Md.: Hi Gurus. I will be celebrating my 30th birthday at the end of the summer, and want to take a two-night, inexpensive ($200-$300) trip with some friends. I'm looking for someplace where six girls can have some fun! Any ideas?

The Going Out Gurus: hello Silver Spring. So many choices for you. How about Nashville? You can usually fly there on the cheap on Southwest. And it's a pretty great town for a two-night visit. Even if you don't like country music. Vegas is another option if you're looking for something wonderfully tacky and bizarre and fun. Closer by, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh are both easily driveable and great cities with completely different charms. Any of those work for you? - Joe

Alexandria: So what's the scoop on McFadden's... do they really have an open bar or is it a myth?

The Going Out Gurus: Well, they did have one, Alexandria. I sat down with the owners of McFadden's the other day, and they've scaled back a number of their promotions in recent weeks after -- let me put this delicately -- discussions with neighborhood groups. No more open bar on Thursdays. They've even banned women from dancing on the bar. There are still numerous promotions: $2 Sam Adams on Thursday, $1 drinks for women between 7 and 10 p.m. (free for nurses and flight attendants all night) on Wednesday, $5 pitchers and 10 cent wings on Monday. -- Fritz

Washington, D.C.: I've got some co-workers coming in from California for business in the late evening on Sunday night. Can you suggest a restaurant in the Dupont Circle area that is a nice place but also ideal for travel-weary people?

The Going Out Gurus: If I were in that neighborhood and travel weary, I'd like to find myself on one of the sofas at the Tabard Inn, or snug at Firfly -- Alexa

Washington, D.C.: What do you guys think of Juste Lounge on a Friday night for happy hour, and where would you suggest to go afterwards to party hard?

The Going Out Gurus: Washington, you don't need to go anywhere else. I love Juste Lounge for its happy hour martinis and live music (usually neo-soul and jazz). After 9, they have DJs spinning hip-hop and R&B, and the party gets started downstairs. -- Fritz

Washington, D.C.: My dear GOGs, perhaps you can answer a question that's been bugging me: Where was the old Crow Bar? I used to go there when I was a wee lad with my friend who went to GW. I remember it being off of K (K and 21st? 20th?) but whatever has replaced it did a good job of hiding the fact that it's a new building. Nobody else seems to remember either. Help me, GOGs, you're my only hope!

The Going Out Gurus: Ah, the Crow Bar. That brings back memories of my early 20s. I used to love that place. If memory serves (and it doesn't always), I think it was near the corner of 20th and L. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong. -- Jen

Market lover seeks more: I love Eastern Market on the weekend - the crafts, the flowers, the fresh food! Are there any other markets worth visiting (I know about the Georgetown flea market and the Courthouse farmer's market already)?

The Going Out Gurus: Here's a slew of farmers markets for you. Readers, where are your favorites?

Rosslyn, VA: Hey GOGs,
I was out with a bunch of friends, drunk, last saturday night in Dupont circle. It was about 2:30 am and we were hungry so we went on the hunt for some eats. First thought was Kramerbooks but when we got there, not only did they demand that everyone order something, everyone would have to shell out 12 bucks for even a simple meal when all we wanted was a 4 dollar plate of flapjacks. We ended up leaving afterwords and headed to P Street where the pickin's were also pretty slim. Alberto's was open but only had two greasy pizzas to offer slices from. We ended up at D.C. cafe which was cramped and just a little shady. Why doesn't Dupont have more late night cheap dining options where we can sit down, get served, be drunk and enjoy cheap food?

The Going Out Gurus: This sounds like an issue the DC city council should take up at its next meeting. No places for drunks to fill up on food in Dupont late at night?? What kind of city is this anyway?!! - Joe

DC birthday girl: Hello!

Next week (Friday) I'm turning 28 and would like to invite about 20 friends (of which hopefully about 12 will come) to a long, leisurely dinner somewhere in town. Best place would have a patio (it will be nice by then, darn it!) and would let us linger. Any thoughts?

The Going Out Gurus: Chef Geoff's, Poste, the Tabard Inn, Iron Gate have particularly pretty patios, I think. Anyone else want to contribute their faves, help a girl out? -- Alexa.

Arlington, VA: Are Thursdays at 5 under a new promotion now? Does this change their no dress code policy? Thanks for the help

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, Arlington. Thursdays, now called "Swank," run by Mad Power Unit, who co-promote Flirt at MCCXXIII. But wait -- jeans and sneakers are welcome at Swank, I'm told. No change there -- Five has never had a dress code.

By the way, if you like hip-hop, you'd be crazy to miss Gang Starr at Five tonight. It's free! It's not too jiggy! What more do you want? -- Fritz (channeling Rhomey-Rhome)

Arlington, Va.: I have some questions about bachelorette partying -- no, not the usual about bars. I think I have dinner and night life taken care of! However, we are trying to arrange a daytime activity (preferrably a "girly" one) and the only ideas I have are: (1) going to Made by You and doing the pottery thing (I hear they will let you bring wine) or (2) going for manicures or something. (anyone have a great manicure place?) Any other suggestions? Note: there will be about 8-10 girls. THANKS!

The Going Out Gurus: Either of those ideas sound like fun. You could also have afternoon tea, or do a full spa day somewhere. A lot of places offer packages -- massage, facial and manicure, for example -- and might even be willing to give a special discount to a large group. I did this with a small group of girlfriends in lieu of a bachelorette party, and everyone enjoyed it. -- Jen

The Triumvirate: Are those three hot Russian lifeguards coming back to the Washington Hilton on Connecticut Ave?

If so I'll make haste to reserve my spot by the lifeguard stand...

The Going Out Gurus: You can only be referring to the XXX's -- I haven't yet been able to "make out" their forms through the recent sheets of rain. I promise to stay on top of this. -- Kate

I GOT THE HORSE RIGHT HERE: I need to place a bet on the Belmont.

NO - It's not addictive gambling, but my beloved really feels like Funny Cide will pull it off, and I want to support her vision.

But the closest place I found to by a ticket is in Frederick, and I'm in Virginia. Please help.

The Going Out Gurus: Put the house on Funny Cide. Your house, that is. Not ours. We don't support this kind of thing, but you're not using your internet to its full capacity if you haven't yet located one of many legal online gambling sites. Time to start Googling.

re: cheap trips: You can do a lot more on $200-$300 than you think. Esp if you share hotel rooms with friends. Check out www.travelzoo.com for some really, really, hot deals (eg. roundtrip to bahamas airfare for $256 incl taxes) and also www.biddingfortravel.com for priceline tix and hotel deals (people post the deals they get on priceline and advise you how to find the same -- i found a $28/nt hilton deal on there). Also, if you're looking to go a more traditional route and don't want to priceline it, www.hotels.com has excellent deals (i found st. gregory's suite in dc for $80/nt there even though the going rate was $250). www.hotwire.com is great too. At these rates, you can easily afford either a really cool destination, or at least a posh hotel.

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for the cheap tips, cheap trips.

Silver Spring, Maryland: Is your El Cheapo Weekend Guide for those with little cash available in Downloadable form? I wanted to distribute it to our volunteer student interns. My El Cheapo federal agency doesn't provide any funds to pay or otherwise entertain our interns so I thought they might find your guide useful. If things get tight they can use it as a blanket to ward off the night chill.

The Going Out Gurus: Bless you, Silver Spring. You're the kind of person I would have welcomed as an intern coordinator in summers past.

When we made The Interns' Guide this year, we included a printable .pdf document that listed some of our favorite specials for each night of the week. (You can print it here.)

(Or, if you have last Friday's paper around, a condensed version ran as the cover story in Weekend.) -- Fritz

Dolla' Drinkee, DC: Fritz, can you re-post that link about bars w/ cheap $1-$2 beers? Many thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: No worries. Now get crackin'. -- Fritz

Alexandria: I think it is a travesty that the you do not have any information amongst your resturant listings about the best Italian restuarant in Virginia... La Piazza. It's located across from the Braddock Road metro and owned and operated by a young Italian couple. I highly reccomend their Buccatini, Involtini d'Melazzane, and their cheesy fried olives. Check it out!

The Going Out Gurus: Travesty, I'm not sure what you mean. The review is here (found by typing La Piazza into the search box). Yes, I've heard plenty of praise for this little spot, but have found it disappointing nonetheless. -- Alexa

Find a class?: My dream of carving a pagan god from the palm tree I stole out of the dumpster at Seacrets (Ocean City) is predicated on finding a wood carving class.

Can you help?

I'm thinking more "carving" than sculpting, as I wish to portray a certain crude tribal charm. But mostly I need some limited technique on which end of what kind of chisel to hold and how not to smash my thumb.

a will consider carving a pagan guru in appreciation for your assistance.

The Going Out Gurus: Is the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria convenient? Or would you prefer Glen Echo? The latter tends to be less expensive, but both have good instructors. I took a welding class/metal sculpture class at the Torp (all classes are sponsored by the Art League) about four years ago, had a blast AND did not scorch myself.

I will hold you to the pagan guru promise. I have always fancied myself a tiki . . . - Kate

Arlington, VA: Does anyone know of a place to pick your own strawberries?

Shouldn't they be in season about now?

The Going Out Gurus: You're right, the season is just beginning, Arlington. I just talked to Mark Zurschmeide at Great Country Farms in Loudoun County, and he says you can come this weekend, for "there's red in all of the fields," and he predicts this will be the biggest crop in 10 years. He also expects to have the later-blooming varieties into July. I've been wanting to pick too, but it's just so rainy. Here's some farms where you can pick your own. (By the way, you can always find this info in the Summer Guide.) -- Anne

Silver Spring, MD: Any word on the "steelo" at Toka? How about Le Tarbouche? Holla back!

The Going Out Gurus: Don't know about Toka, but I have made it to the Inkwell, Saturday nights at Le Tarbouche. It's promoted by the Usual Suspectz, who do One at the Saint, and it attracts a similarly well-dressed African-American clientele for martinis and dancing to hip-hop. (I thought the DJ was only average, though. Maybe he was having an off night?) Anyway, it's a enjoyable way to spend Saturday, and certainly more intimate than, say, the VIP Club. -- Fritz

Late Night Food: In Dupont, try Trio's for pizza or Annie's for steak/eggs.

Ben's Chilli Bowl on U and 12th is also open late night. Not expensive at all!

The Going Out Gurus: God, I don't know what I would do without Ben's some weekends. Also, y'all can't forget Yum's. For late night takeaway, it's gotta be the wings with fried rice and the good Mumbo sauce. -- Fritz

Alexandria, VA: Hi there. I still feel new to this area b/c I haven't met people that I feel in tune with. Jsut a few, but you need more than 2 friends. So, I am interested in some outdoor clubs/rec leagues. Does anyone know about any of the outdoor hiking clubs the Post has listed in the Entertainment section? I am 29, not "hip and trendy", but not matronly, and would like to have a chance to meet people that are open minded adn fun. Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: I think you'll find exactly that at these hiking clubs. Why not give it a go? At worst, you'll have spent a day amid new scenery and worked up a happy sweat. Pick a club, and then come back and tell us how it was. Any hiking readers want to share a mountaintop (or down-in-the-valley) experience? -- Anne

DC: Do any of you know anything about the little restaurant that's in an alley across the street from the TAbard Inn? It looks cozy and romantic.

The Going Out Gurus: It's the Iron Gate. Lovely twinkly garden. Food mediocre. -- Alexa

Washington, DC: All-knowing gurus - I need your help!

It's my husband's 30th birthday on June 7th and the one thing he wants to do is to go to the beach. I'm thinking we can either drive to a beach and spend the day in the sun or use priceline for a (very) cheap room the weekend and spend two days and one night either in Southern Jersey or in Delaware (or both?). I read your beach guide but I'm still having trouble figuring out which beach to go to (I'm thinking Dewey's out - we're not into the frat party atomosphere - but we do like to drink and socialize at night). But then I'm second guessing myself with issues such as:
1. the weather
2. the weather
3. my very small budget
4. the weather
5. the weather

Can you suggest something beach-like for the budget and perhaps weather challenged?

The Going Out Gurus: You're in luck, D.C. A lot of beach places still consider that weekend to be off-season, so you'll generally find lower prices around that time. I (Jen) am a sucker for the Delaware beaches, and it sounds like Rehoboth might be a good bet for you. If it rains, there are still plenty of shops and restaurants within walking distance and it's a bit more subdued than Dewey (not that Dewey is really all that out of control to begin with.) Search around on the Web for hotels. If you don't need a place with an ocean view (and it sounds like you're willing to forego that), you can find a decent room for between $100 and $150, or possibly even less. There may be some along Route 1 that cost around $75 a night. Good luck. -- Jen

Alexandria: Do they still have the Delaplane Strawberry Festival? (Went 15 years ago). If so, do you know when?

The Going Out Gurus: Oh this stings: You just missed it Alex., it was last week.

Georgetown: Re: late nighe eating..... I agree that DC is a late night waste land, but my friends and I make due with the Diner (although if you wait until you get kicked out of bars at 3 there tends to be a wait), auo pied' coushon (spelled completely wrong, French place at Wisconsin and P- foods not very good, but as I said, we are making due) and of course Pizza Mart.

The Going Out Gurus: With late night spelling too!

re: late night in dupont: It's a walk, I know, but the Diner in Adams Morgan fits the bill. It's open 24 hours, and the poster should check out their diner's bill of rights. It's exactly what s/he's asking for.

The Going Out Gurus: Late night ideas coming in...

Late night dining:: Annie's Paramount Steakhouse on 17th!
Those burgers are mighty delish at 3am.

The Going Out Gurus: More...

re: Belmont bet: Go to Laurel Park - easy to get to off 95. Be warned though, they'll probably charge you 3 bucks to get in. That's better than forking over a credit card and a minimum account on a Web site though. Plus, you can enjoy the lovely festival that is the full-timers betting on the simulcast races. You'll think you're in a Guy Ritchie flick, 'cept no one looks like Brad Pitt.

The Going Out Gurus: Indeed, it's the saddest happiest horseiest place in town.

Dupont, Washington, DC: Hi I remember someone in the last couple weeks asking about the new Cantina Marina. I went there Monday afternoon for lunch and drink and it was not what I was expecting at all. It is on the water behind the Odyssey building. It's basically a small circular elevated shack and a sizeable patio area below. The patio area bartendars are Patrice and Bernie, the old bartender/manager from Topaz, who are great. Of course Monday afternoon they were not there, the patio was closed, and the shack was well, a shack. The food is minimal and sort of "eh", the beer selection is small and all served in cans and plastic cups, and I didn't get to assess the liquor situation. It might be more fun with lots of people out on the patio, but so far I am dubious to return.

The Going Out Gurus: Dupont, I have the same feelings you do. I was there on a Wednesday afternoon two or three weeks ago (when the sun was poking out), and it was essentially an empty patio on the waterfront. The bartenders are great, but I paid $6 for a can of Tecate (I was running a tab and had no idea a can of Mexican beer could be so expensive). They're trying to avoid glass falling in the water, I was told, but still ... The menu is still coming together, as is the decor. It really, really has potential. I'm curious to see what happens when the heat wave hits. -- Fritz

P.S. -- Those mosquitos on the Washington Channel are huge.

Wolf Trap: Went to see Anita Baker over the weekend and loved the show. The whole atmosphere rocked with the pinic baskets and wine. Only thing - it was cold.

The Going Out Gurus: And now you're giving us the best that you got!

Rockville, MD: At the Georgetown movie theatre the other night they showed an ad for an Ethiopian restaurant on M and I think 29th or 30th. I can't remember the name...do you know anything about it?

What happened to the Red Sea?

The Going Out Gurus: I think that's Zed's -- Alexa

Uptown: For GREAT manicures and pedicures, go to Georgetown nails. It's upstairs like a lot of other nail salons, but once inside, you'll see that it's very different. Not cheap, but they are awesome. 202-965-2715/on Wisconsin right by the Social Safeway, same side of the street as Bistro Lepic and Starbucks

The Going Out Gurus: Nice tips, Uptown.

Re: Late Night Eats in Dupont: The options for cheap eats in Dupont are slim late night, but not completely missing. Moby Dick south of the circle at 18th & N is open Friday and Sat night until 4am or something rather late. I have eaten there numerous times after partying. For American go to Annie's where you can get breakfast, steak, crab imperial, the menu is huge and far reaching. The food's not bad for late night. On Fri, Sat, and I think Thur they are open 24 hrs. It's not $4 flapjacks but you won't get there anywhere in NW DC.

The Going Out Gurus: More from the night kitchen ...

Washington, DC: For drunk late Saturday night dining (an issue near and dear to my heart) I head to Bistrot du Coin, they serve real dinner, not just pizza, until 1 a.m., at least. Steak frites, mussels, stinky french cheese. Or the Diner in Adams Morgan if your group of friends is cheap, and/or on the rowdy side.

The Going Out Gurus: And more. The lack of choice is disappointing, no?

Wahington DC: On June 7, 2003, the Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund will once again bring together diverse communities from across the DC area for its 8th Annual “Hoop Dreams” Charity 3-on-3 Charity Basketball Tournament. Play will begin at 9AM in the streets at 5th and G Streets, NW, outside the National Building Museum and GAO, one block east of the MCI Center.
This year’s tournament is much more than just hoops and exciting competition. Local celebrities including NBA and WNBA stars are scheduled to visit. Other activities will include the sponsor & special guest ceremony and celebrity game with these festivities starting at Noon. Spectators can try their skills with 3 point and foul shot contests and other games at the Sprite Escalade Court and there will be a Youth Sports Arena for children ages 9 and up.
The tournament will feature a “double elimination format.” All players must be 15 years of age as of Saturday, June 7th. Registration is $75 per team, $30 for a “student team.” Student teams much include a minimum of three players who are currently enrolled in high school, and who are 18 or under as of June 7th, or the $75 fee applies. All teams must have three players minimum, and five maximum to register. Proceeds benefit academic college scholarships and support programs for D.C. public high school students. The first 128 teams to register will be accepted. To register a team or find more information, please visit the Hoop Dreams website at www.hoopdreams.org.
Come out and enjoy the day and support a great cause!

The Going Out Gurus: Consider this plug slam dunked.

Washington, DC: Rosslyn brings up a good point about DC eateries - the utter lack of casual, cheap, late night (or anytime) food. The Diner is always packed, so why aren't there more places like it? Who wants to drive to the suburbs just to get an omelette?

The Going Out Gurus: Downtown restaurants may want to take note of all this clamoring.

Shakespeare Fan: What's the story with the free shakespeare theater? Is it tough to get tickets to today's show, is the performance any good, etc.?

The Going Out Gurus: The Free for All is put on by Shakespeare Theatre. This year they're doing a previously well-received version of "Hamlet," definitely worth seeing, especially for free. As far as tickets go, you may have an easier time getting them on not-so-nice days like today. (They sometimes cancel performances if there's a major downpour or potentially dangerous thunder and lightning. If there's just a light drizzle, though, the show will probably go on.) If you can't get to The Post, Carter Barron or the Shakespeare Theatre to get tickets, you can try filling out this online form. Hope that helps. -- Jen

Beer Beer Beer Beer Beer: Fritz, any good summer brews out there? Haven't had a chance to sample many, but'll I'll be at the Ram's Head in Savage Mill to try theirs tonight (free glass at happy hour).

The Going Out Gurus: I really, really wish I could join you tonight for the free beer/bratwurst tonight at Rams Head (Annapolis, Savage, take your pick). Let us know how it is.

As far as summer brews, let's see: Jason at Gordon Biersch sent word that he tapped a new Blonde Bock for the summer; I had a great glass (or two) of the Capitol Kolsch at the Capital City Brewing Company in Shirlington last night (It's made with 18 percent wheat, and wonderfully refreshing); The Paulaner Heffweissen was new at Cafe Mozart a week or two ago ...

Anyone else tasted a good light summer beer lately? -- Fritz

Not Cheap, Just Smart: People remember that when you travel to use your AAA or Government ID to get cheaper hotel rates.

The Going Out Gurus: Good point. AAA will save you every time. Thanks.

re: Yums: Fritz, I went there today and had a steak and cheese and got the wings like y'all say. Do they neglect to fully pluck the feathers off them? There was something stringy on all of them wings. I like my food fried fo sure. it was fun to watch them make the steak and cheese too.

The Going Out Gurus: Ha ha ha. Which Yum's was this?

Newly engaged!!!: Hey Gurus! Back before Diamond Day, I remember wistfully reading your special wedding edition online chat. Can you provide a link to that? Thanks oodles and oodles!!

The Going Out Gurus: Here it is. And congratulations on your significant jewelry.

Capital Heights, MD: I have a question maybe someone can help me with, I am having a bbq this weekend, and want to play some games in order to avoid anyone just sitting around looking or being bored - any thoughts?

The Going Out Gurus: Frisbee, softball, badminton? If the ground is damp and no one wants to go mud-sliding, the party might move indoors. That's when uncoordinated people like me cheer for games. You don't need to make contributions to the Milton Bradley empire, either. Teams are fun for Celebrity: ask everyone to write 10 celebrities on little scraps of paper, then drop them in a hat. One person draws a name and describes the person, trying to get the team to guess. The more obscure names, the better, because you have to go the sounds-like route. Dictionary is cheap too: one person picks a word; everyone writes a definition, including one correct one, then you guess which is the right one. Maura and Kate are old hands at the Movie Game: name an actor and go around the circle, naming films s/he's been in. When you can't think of one, you're out, and we play that sequels don't count. This may lead to startling revelations, like the fact that your most macho tough-guy friend watched "How to Make an American Quilt." Readers, what's your game? -- Anne

Crystal City, VA: Hi Gurus... I was wondering, maybe I have missed it somewhere, if the Jazz in the Sculpture Garden on Friday Nights is going to start again soon. My co-workers and I really enjoyed that last year... Thanks

The Going Out Gurus: Hello Crystal City. Jazz in the Sculpture Garden starts back up on June 26 and runs every Thursday night through Aug. 28. Music starts at 5:30 p.m. - Joe

Giveth, not taketh: Just wanted to give well-deserved props to Flat Top Grill in Ballston. Went there recently with a friend who has severe food allergies in a few major categories. When they found out, the hostess produced a two-sided page that listed which sauces and foods are "safe" for virtually every conceivable intolerance out there. Making your own grill at FT is always a safe bet for dining; they made it even safer for even the most challenged diners.

The Going Out Gurus: A good tip-off for allergics.

Re: Cantina Marina: Patrice from Topaz is bartending there? I love her. Do you think she'll marry me?

The Going Out Gurus: That's between you and Patrice.

best of's: Hi Gurus! I've looked and looked, but for the life of me, I can't find the page where you all answered questions that are asked all the time. Did I dream it?

The Going Out Gurus: Maybe you are thinking of our Frequently Asked Questions page? You can get here from the Help Desk in the right blue column of the Entertainment Guide -- below the quote from the chat.

Arlington, VA: Any word on if DC Sessions will be back this summer?

The Going Out Gurus: Hello Arlington, DC Sessions has been replaced this year by "Live on Penn" Shows will be on Saturdays beginning July 5 and running through Sept. 6. No schedule yet, but look for some big names. Tickets for these shows are $3.

Uptown: If only Chipotle were a late-night kind of place...

The Going Out Gurus: If only.

Seeing a man about a horse:
Regarding the bet on Funny Cide, part of the magic is having an actual ticket to hold on to (I'm trying to simulate the idea of being there).

I appreciate that you "don't support this kind of thing." I hope to model myself on the high moral standards of a guru (one day).

The Going Out Gurus: Well, saying we don't support it, doesn't mean that we don't do it. We just feel guilty about squandering millions of dollars on our betting habits while preaching virtue. Sort of like our good friend and gambling buddy Bill Bennett.

Washington, DC: Hey Gurus, I have a question about Kobe beef. Are there any restaurants that serve it in DC, and is it as good as people proclaim it to be? I missed Tom Sistema's chat yesterday, but am hoping that one of you will also know. Thank you!

The Going Out Gurus: Both Cafe Japone and Signatures have Kobe. -- Alexa

McLean, Virginia: Any suggestions for a couple that would like to enjoy a slightly relaxing but somewhat interesting evening? It has to be in Northern Virginia this Saturday night. Any dinner and show suggestions. He's a vegetarian. Price really isn't a consideration.

The Going Out Gurus: Have you ever been to Jammin' Java? If not, that might be a good change of pace for you. The menu doesn't include full-blown entrees, but they have soups, salads and sandwiches, some of which, I believe, are vegetarian-friendly. -- Jen

About Tabard Inn's patio...: Word of advice to the chica looking for a place to dine on the patio with semi-large group. Although Tabard's patio is quite lovely, everytime I've called for reservations, they tell me they don't take them for a specific area. Meaning, no patio guarantee.

The Going Out Gurus: Plink. Plink.

Jack Johnson: I see that he is coming to Bull Run. How can I get tickets without paying the evil TicketMaster enterprise?

The Going Out Gurus: You could knock over an unsuspecting fan and take the tickets from his or her pocket before the show starts. Or you could buy from a scalper. Or you could pray really, really hard. - Joe

Washington DC: Can you tell us more about Snap at the Washington Plaza Hotel? As in, what time does it start - the music and drink specials (Is it really 10pm? Thats late) Can you hear people well? What time should one get there to get a seat? What are the drink specials?

The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Washington -- in warmer weather, the party is moving outside to the pool (weather permitting), which has a new tiki decor. I heard the Ian Svenonious of the Make Up and the Scene Creamers is DJing tonight, spinning soul, funk, '60s garage and other music, starting at 9 p.m.

In case of bad weather, the whole shebang moves back inside.

I haven't been to the outdoor party yet (I'm waiting for good weather), but the indoor Snap! has never been too loud. Crowded, yes. -- Fritz

Palisades, DC: Greetings GOG's!

I'm curious if the Screen on the Green is happening this summer, and - if so - what's the theme for the season? Thanks!, but looking for some other options.

Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Here's the skinny on Screen on the Green. If you're looking for other outdoor film fest options (because who doesn't want to be outside in the beautiful weather we've been having?), NIH's film fest happens later in the summer. Silverdocs, coming in June, also sounds like a great event. -- Jen

BBQ: Quarters makes every party special.

The Going Out Gurus: No they don't, silly. Cupcakes make parties special as do fireworks, monkeys (as available), fresh flowers, superb burgers and singalongs (you must get "The Family Band" kit from Restoration Hardware).

Alex, VA: Not to be total stick in the mud, but the person who uses a gov id for personal travel could find themselves in some massive, massive trouble if caught.

The Going Out Gurus: We're not condoning any misuse of government IDs. But we do encourage the use of AAA member discounts. Thanks for the warning, Alex.

Re: Wood Turning Class: My father-in-law teaches a class through Fairfax County (I think in the Lee District area).

Check the local adult ed programs offered by the counties.

The Going Out Gurus: Very helpful.

Cheaphotels: Another link you may wish to try is travelcoupons.com. or roomsaver.com. They feature the coupons you find at the rest stops up and down the interstate.

Down side is acceptance of coupons is based on hotel occupancy - so if its a high volume weekend, the hotel may not honor the coupon.

The Going Out Gurus: We're game for a gamble. Thanks ch.

K Street: Where do you recommend a solo 39 year old go in West End/Georgetown/Downtown to have a drink and very good bar food?

The Ritz (West End & G'town) are great, Matchbox is worth the effort - but looking for new places. Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: Glad you like the Ritz in G'town, K Street. I stopped in last night for a few cocktails, and it's highly recommended (even if they're $12 a piece).

The upstairs wine bar at Bistro Lepic is a fantastic spot. You probably already know this, but the happy hour bar menu at McCormick and Schmick's is excellent, and certainly not too young. And while it's not really "bar food" per se, I love the stylish upstairs bar at Oceanaire. -- Fritz

Scott (13th & Mass.): Best sandwiches in DC has got to be AKA Friscos on Wisc and Van Ness. Only open at lunch and will knock your socks off.

Has anyone tried the pizza from Matchbox? I used to go to Cafe di Mama on Conn. & Albemarle but it closed. DC pizza sucks.

The Going Out Gurus: Scott. You can read some of my sandwich thoughts here. As for Matchbox, I was delighted with it. Don't be too harsh on DC's pies. -- Alexa

Bethesda, MD: For the woman who wants to celebrate her 30th with a vacation w/friends, I would also suggest Williamsburg, VA for a weekend trip! There's tons to do including historic sites, good restaurants, and fun nightlife options. Plus, they can hit Busch Gardens during the day!

The Going Out Gurus: I bet Jen would agree with you too.

Late nite eats: Head to 14th and U to the fabulous "24/7". Nothing is better after last call then one of their fantastic felafels!

The Going Out Gurus: Now that sounds like a great idea.

K St.: Hi Gurus! A friend is getting married in DC next month and wants to find a "nice" but affordable place to take her mom, mother-in-law-to-be, grandmother, and herself to get manicures the day before the wedding...Atmosphere is important since the extended family will be in tow. Any ideas for a quality manicure in a nice setting that won't break the bank? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Janet tells me that Nail Spa, on upper Connecticut Ave., might be a good bet. Anyone else have ideas?

G-Town late eats: Go to Fassikas (sp) on M St. for your
late-night lebneh fix.

The Going Out Gurus: The a. to your late-night lebneh q.

Arlington, Va.: You don't need a new Guru, do you?

I'm recently laid off. What do the Gurus suggest for cheap (free) daytime entertainment? I'll probably hit the museums for the first time in a few years, but what options am I not thinking of? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: This goes out to Arlington and the I-have-Friday-off luckyduck. Everything is cheaper and less crowded during the weekdays, so luxuriate in how jealous everyone else will be. Excellent call on museums. What about getting tickets go up in the Washington Monument? Arlington Cemetery is a powerful place to visit, and a must if you haven't been there. And don't forget about midday movies. Commercial theaters have cheap matinees, and the Library of Congress and the National Archives often have noontime films and/or speakers. And with summer coming up, there's lots of free noontime concerts. Check our Summer Concert Guide tomorrow for the details. If I were you and had tomorrow off, I'd guarantee free tickets for Hamlet first and then head to the City Museum to avoid the crowds. -- Anne

Oakton, VA: Oh please take my question!!!!

My hubby and I are going to the Louisiana Swamp Romp at Wolftrap on Sunday for the first time. Hubby thinks that there will be food (good ol' cajun cookin) there, but I'm not so sure. What can we expect?

Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Hello Oakton,

Just got off the phone with my good friends at Wolf Trap and they assure me that there'll be all kinds of great Louisiana food for Swamp Romp. Enjoy it. - Joe

Horse Player: If the person wants to place a bet on Funny Cide, s/he should go to Rosecroft Raceway. You'll be able to bet the Belmont the night before and then watch it at home that Saturday. Go Funny Cide!!!!

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks HP. We'll pass it on.

One year ideas?: Any not-outrageously-expensive ideas for a one-year anniversary next week? Prefer in DC/metro accessible. thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Seeing a show might be a nice way to celebrate. You could go to the aforementioned Free for All. Or maybe to see something at Millennium Stage. Also, take a look at our cheap tickets feature. One of those discount programs might work for you, and that would allow you to catch a show without spending too much cash. -- Jen

harDCore: how old are you people, 5?

"Cupcakes make parties special as do fireworks, monkeys (as available), fresh flowers, superb burgers and singalongs (you must get "The Family Band" kit from Restoration Hardware)."

The Going Out Gurus: Sorry. The second half of my answer "self-peircing, permanent tattooing, homemade vodka guzzling and quantity vomitting" seems to have been cut off. Must be having technical issues. Mea culpa. -- Kate

Tysons Corner, VA: Gogs, as always, I love the chats.

Two questions:

1.I'm heading to Restaurant Seven on Rt 7 in Tysons tonight and was wondering if you had the chance to try this place out yet, and if so, how was it? Also, what is the dress code like... should I dress as if I can afford the meal ($30 avg entree price!), or would business casual be suitable.

2. What would you consider the best place to eat in Tysons that offers reasonably priced GOOD food that doesn't ooooooooooz with pretentiousness. (or should I say older business types who are trying to make multi-million dollar deals over dinner)

Thanks so much, you guys are the best!

The Going Out Gurus: I liked Restaurant Seven when I went. The thing about it is that it's sort of two restaurants in one -- a more casual mood with menu to match in front, a posher scene, fancier eats in the back. Which were you going to? Either way, I think biz casual is fine. I have to say I don't tend to go to Tyson's for dinner -- partly for the reason you mention, partly because it's not very pretty and mainly 'cause it's a drag to get to. -- Alexa

Arlington, VA: Help! I need to come up with a few restaurant choices to have a rehearsal dinner. We were thinking Italian or American with a separate room available to us. Most of the guests will be staying in the Georgetown area. Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Arlington: Did you take a look at this?

French Late Eats: Bistro Francais on M St is open late - maybe until 2am? I think after 10pm they have a three course meal for $20 ish . . .I think wine can be one of your courses. . .

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, yes. Bistro Francais stays up late.

Greenback blues: Tell me more about the $15 happy hour at that place on Conn Avenue...

The Going Out Gurus: You mean MCCXXIII? The deal is this: a $15 cover charge gets you access to a premium open bar from 6 to 9 on Thursdays and 5 to 9 on Fridays. It draws a young professional crowd -- 20s to mid30s -- and can be a good time. Sometimes, though, it's too crowded and loud. That's when no amount of free Absolut could get me through the night ... -- Fritz

Re: Kobe Beef: Here's a link for info on kobe beef. Make sure the place you get it from is selling real kobe, some places will sell other pieces of Wagyu (the cattle breed from which kobe comes) and call it kobe or some places will sell this new American kobe. To really understand if kobe is worth it you have to eat real kobe. Mind you, it is very expensive.

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks Kobe One.

re: BBQ Games: If you have lawn space, Croquet & Bocci are fun (and can easily be found at Target.. or a yard sale).

Wiffle ball is a big hit w/my crowd.. tho we had to change the rules a bit -- hitting a homer over the fence is an out (gets tiresome climbing that fence).

The Going Out Gurus: Careful, HarDCore might spaz. I bought my croquet set for $3 at a garage sale, but there's an awfully slick kit available for about $70 at Target, nice wedding/birthday gift. -- Kate

Former midwesterner: The best BBQ game, without a doubt, is cornhole. It's like horseshoes, but you try to get beanbags through a hole in a target. It's twenty times more fun than it sounds, and it's w/ teams. The sets go under the brand name "baggo"- don't try to google cornhole, you've been warned.

The Going Out Gurus: Sounds unspeakably pervy.

DC: GOGs, hook me up. What are the good dancing options in Adams Morgan tonight? Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: On Thursday? Ummmmm... hip-hop at Chief Ike's? '80s at Heaven and Hell? Cheesy pop music at Crush?

harDCore: Kate - I prefer Quality vomiting over Quantity. Although I never yack, because I prefer good earthy herbs over any spirit.

The Going Out Gurus: You are a true man of taste.

re :my yums lunch : 14th and P nw

i'm saving the chicken wings and givin them to my fiance.

The Going Out Gurus: I'm not sure I would touch cold (or reheated) Yum's. It's a dish best served "fresh."

Just so you know....: Internet Gambling is illegal.

The Going Out Gurus: If only you could see our red faces.
And our huge winnings!

Tysons Corner, Va., but just for work: How much fun is Marrakesh, really? I'm going with three friends tonight for dinner for a celebration and I want to know what to expect. We're up for some cool belly dancing and fun food. Is that about right?

BTW, Fritz, you rock. Went to Helix last week on your recommendation and it totally rocks. Way chill and super fun. Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: The food isn't going to blow you away, but with the dancers, does it really need to? You're in for a fun night.

Glad you liked Helix. -- Fritz

Rosslyn, Va.: Hi GoGs! It's my 10-year college reunion this weekend, agh! How did we get so old? Anyway, a bunch of friends want to get together for dinner before the big party on Saturday night on campus at Georgetown. Can you suggest a place that can accomodate about 14 people within walking distance to the university. The Tombs and F Scotts are going to be too crowded/noisy and Clyde's is booked. We're hoping for someplace not too expensive, but a little nicer than Pizzeria Uno's. Suggestions for a crowd pleaser? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: How about Neyla? Alexa tells me (Jen) there's a center table there that could nicely accommodate your group if you can get a reservation. (P.S.: next year it will be ten years since I graduated college. And yes, it is completely alarming.)

Lunch Break 20230: No question here, just a comment: the Beck show last night at Wolf Trap was quite outstanding. Tight band, great songs, some beat boxing hip hop, jordache jeans, and glow-in-the-dark lab coats. A great live performance.

The Going Out Gurus: I couldn't agree more, LB. It was amazing. The man is self-made DJ -- his lungs and vocal chords spin out whatever artist/genre he wants to channel, and I'm starting to think he, and not Eminem, is Elvis reincarnated ... who else can mix country, R&B hair metal rock, Michael Jackson/Travolta-punctuated dance moves? Was he the impetus for alt-country? I mean, back in the day, I thought "Loser" was true modernism, but he takes it all and mixes it together, but I can't tell whether he's gone post-ironic. The '80s jeans shout-outs and the Temptations-esque dance moves with the guitarists was definitely played for laughs, but sometimes he played a chord, then slid into a groove with seemingly sincere satisfaction. The "Two Turntables" penultimate finale with samples from "Hot in Herre" knocked me out. That was a show worth the wait in the parking lot. -- Anne

Tap room in Clarendon: Any word on this tap room opening up next to the containter store in clarendon? I'm thirsty.

The Going Out Gurus: It's Harry's Tap Room, run by the company that owns Sam and Harry's. Supposed to open this summer. But with the outstanding beer selection at Galaxy Hut, how could anyone in that neighborhood be thirsty? -- Fritz

washington dc: Can you clarify what the drink specials are (and what time they start) at Snap? If there are none, is it a pretty reasonably priced event?

The Going Out Gurus: Sure. I spoke to the manager today. Every week, one of the specialty cocktails is knocked down to around $5 (it can vary) for the duration of the evening. Otherwise, beers are $4-5, and cocktails are $6-10 (more if you want a supersize martini, for example). -- Fritz

I luv Takoma Park: I love the Takoma Park market for all its kids and dogs, the banjo player, sidewalk chalk drawings, breakfast at Mark's or the Savory or even a coffee and sweet from a stand--plus it has all the organic veggies you want, two flower stalls, organic meats and cheeses and breads, people selling plants, eggs, beeswax products, baked goods, and pierogies. What more could you could want? It's even Metro accessible!

The Going Out Gurus: What more, indeed. We heart Takoma Park.

The Mall, Washington, D.C.: Hi, I work near 21st and Constitution Avenue and can't find a place that's relatively close and not a college dive for a decent after-work happy hour. Please help with suggestions!

The Going Out Gurus: In that neighborhood, I'd have to go with The Exchange. Good happy hour specials and a large patio, if the sun ever comes out. -- Fritz

Arlington, Va.: My husband's 50th birthday is coming up this winter (which limits options)and I need ideas for a suprise party for him. I'd like to have something more entertaining than just a band and a party -- either something really fun and entertaining (can be casual) or a great view or SOMETHING! Must be able to accomodate around 100 people. He loves golf, but that time of year doesn't lend itself to anything like that (I checked - there are no indoor mini golf ranges). Someone mentioned something like Rock N' Bowl -- but that's only in New Orleans. I'd love something different and memorable. ALL SUGGESTIONS GRATEFULLY ACCEPTED!

The Going Out Gurus: Strike Bethesda could spare you some lanes, if you book ahead. Also, there's the more low-key Bop -n- Bowl.

Woodley Park: What's shiny about the advice? Can Kate type every week?

The Going Out Gurus: It's the extra Bling! that makes our advice so shiny. We'll all keep typing as long as you keep asking, and nominating. Thanks everybody.

See you next Thursday.

Kate, Duck Duck Goose: How can you forget our Duck Duck Goose Escapade last summer??

The Going Out Gurus: PS. Never.
