Got Plans?
With the Entertainment Guide Staff
washingtonpost.com

Thursday, June 05, 2003; 1:00 p.m ET

Every Thursday at 1 p.m. ET, washingtonpost.com's Entertainment Guide experts share their best bets for local flavor, great dates and family fun. Got plans? Great. Need plans? Just ask. We have the skinny on the bars and clubs, concerts, kitchens, theaters and special events that keep life interesting. We're going out gurus, and we're at your service.

Of course, we're happy to answer questions about local entertainment, but we need to hear from you, too. Introduce us to the coolest DJ or the fastest bartender you've encountered. Sound off on the week's best concert or the city's best burger. Tell us about the best place to amuse little kids or a big art fan. Together we can plan fun ways to spend weekdays, weekends, dates and holidays. The pleasure is ours, and yours.

Each week a different guru will act as host or hostess, but the entire staff is at your service. If you're looking for more ideas, see the Entertainment Guide.

The discussion ended at 2:15. The transcript follows.

Editor's Note: Washingtonpost.com moderators retain editorial control over Live Online discussions and choose the most relevant questions for guests and hosts; guests and hosts can decline to answer questions.

The Going Out Gurus: Ooops. We were so busy eating our lunches we quite forgot the time. So while Fritz polishes off the last of his mom's fruit cake, I'll say this: We missed you this week and we're glad you're back. We're all here (bar Rhome and Chaney), so let's start -- DJ are you listening? -- popping some questions...

________________________________________________

Rockville, Va.: I am jet-setting off to Vegas next weekend with a bunch of girlfriends and I am in dire need of some fun clothes! My problem is that I'm a size 16, too big for most regular size clothes and too small for the plus sizes. So finding a cute sundress or funky Vegas-worthy top has been difficult. What's a size 16 girl to do? Do you guys, or any clicksters, know of any stores that might be able to help me out?

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Rockville,

Vegas sounds as if it will be awesome. As for the fun clothes, the trick is to look for designers like Marina Rinaldi, Elisabeth and Liz Claiborne Woman, who specialize in plus-sizes. Fortunately, there are more and more department stores that are carrying these sizes. I know the Saks in Chevy Chase does carry plus-sizes, and I think they have a Marina Rinaldi department. By any chance do you subscribe to the magazine, Grace? It should be able to help you out with other shopping tips and trips.

The Going Out Gurus: For all of you White Stripes fans out there, tickets for the band's July 26 show at GW's Smith Center go on sale Saturday at 11 a.m. - Joe

________________________________________________

Silver Spring, Md.: Hey - you guys are great! Heard a rumor that there will be free shuttles running from the Vienna metro to the Virginia Wine Festival this weekend. By any chance do you know if that is true? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: No rumor at all, SS. It's a fact: The round-trip shuttle to Vintage Virginia Wine Festival costs $10 and departs from Vienna's south Kiss and Ride at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., returning at 4 and 6 p.m. Call 1-800-277-2675 (that spells "cork") to reserve your seat. -- Anne

________________________________________________

Washington, D.C.: Hey GOGs, I know you've answered beer geek questions before, but here is another. Where would you go to sample a variety of beers with a group of 6-10 friends? I'm thinking RFD or the Brickskller, but anything near Metro and after work is okay.

The Going Out Gurus: Either of those should be fine, Washington. You don't mention a day, but I might avoid the Brick on Friday nights if you have a group -- it gets crowded. R.F.D. should be fine now that most of the MCI Center teams are finished for the year. I was in after happy hour the other night for a pint of Old Engine Oil and service was friendly and fast. Empty tables and a back patio, too. You can also consider Tuesday's Belgian Beer Happy Hour at Bohemian Caverns. -- Fritz

________________________________________________

Washington DC: Hello gurus- Despite the never-ending rain (though it does look glorious out today, eh?), I am looking for a listing of the outdoor festivals, etc... such as the Washington Folk Festival, the Alexandria Red Corss festival, any street or music festivals. Will you be compiling a list of these for us?
thanks

The Going Out Gurus: Washington, we've already done it. Take a look at our list of summer festivals. Movies, music, Folklife -- we've got you covered. -- Maura

________________________________________________

Burke, VA: In case any people out there a lovers of good authentic Greek cuisine, the church I go to Saint Katherines is having a Greek Festival. They will have all sorts of foods and desserts, gifts, icons, books, greek dancing, and music this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. If you liked My Big Fat Greek Wedding then come and get a taste of it in person!! For directions you can go to their website: www.saint-katherines.org

The Going Out Gurus: Another festive idea.

________________________________________________

Washington, D.C.: Do you know anything about this new lounge in Adams Morgan called Sake, I think?

The Going Out Gurus: Saki is supposed to open next week in the old Showboat/Whisper/Dodgy Club space at the end of the 18th Street. It's going to be a sushi place and lounge with an "exotic" decor. We should have a review by the next edition of Got Plans. -- Fritz

________________________________________________

Dupont Circle, Washington, D.C.: Do you guys know of any good, relatively cheap picture and poster framing places in the area. Preferably anywhere in downtown or NW that is metro accessible. Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Dupont Circle,

I'm wracking my brain to think of a place that's downtown. There used to be a good frame shop on Columbia Rd. near 18th Street. I don't know whether the guy's still there, though.
If you can get yourself out to Tysons Corner, Foliograph is excellent.

________________________________________________

Washington, D.C.: Two of my girlfriends and I are looking for a fun place to have dinner on Saturday! Our priorities are fun cocktails, delicious food, good atmosphere--not to mellow and not too crazy. We're 30, all involved in relationships so not looking for a pickup scene, but a place to have some drinks, talk and have fun! I'm thinking of someplace along the lines of Cafe Atlantico, Bistrot du Coin or Ten Penh--but have already been to those places and would like to try something new. Thoughts?

The Going Out Gurus: I'd like to see you gals up at the bar at Zaytinya, or D.C. Coast or Poste or Zola. -- Alexa

________________________________________________

Centreville, Va.: Ok guys, here's a true stumper. A friend of mine is getting married in October, and it's up to me to find the ride. I want to rent something exotic, like a Rolls Royce, Dodge Viper, Porsche Convertible, that type of thing. All my Internet searching has come up with nothing. The wedding's in Charlottesville, but I'd be willing to rent from anywhere. Know anyone that'll lend me a Ferrari for a day?

The Going Out Gurus: Ferrari, I'm not so sure about, but I do know that a company called Alabaster Limousines of London -- that name oozes quality -- can a fleet of Rolls and Bentleys (www.rollsweddings.com). Also, American Eagle Limousine -- again, reaks of standards -- has a stretch MG, Ford Excusion with jacuzzi and Hummerzines; www.americaneaglelimo.com. If you need help choosing a quality company, contact www.limo.org.

I stand by the above. -- Kate

________________________________________________

For Rockville, VA: A lower cost option for a cute sundress in larger regular (but not quite plus) sizes is Old Navy. They have cute, fun strappy dresses in real people sizes both in stores and on-line.

The Going Out Gurus: Some help for Rocky.

________________________________________________

Fairfax, VA: What dance club has the hottest gay men?

The Going Out Gurus: The consensus among my friends seems to be that it's Lizard Lounge, Sundays at MCCXXIII. -- Fritz

________________________________________________

Georgetown, Washington, D.C.: My 18-year old brother is in town next weekend, and I'm struggling for ideas. I don't want him to think his big sister is lame and boring. He's not into museums, but likes live music, pool, etc. I'm looking for ideas in the city, preferably closer to the G'town area where we can relax, have a good time, and I can reconnect with my little brother before he goes to college.

The Going Out Gurus: Hello Georgetown, Why don't you take him to the Black Cat. Live music upstairs (and in the back room) and a pool table as well. - Joe

________________________________________________

Rosslyn, Arlington, Va.: Howdy Gurus! Too bad we're all inside and not able to enjoy this gorgeous (finally!) weather - and it's supposed to last through tomorrow! Right on!

Unfortunately, it's supposed to get dreary again this weekend. I've had reservations for over a month at a bed and breakfast in Charlottesville. Any ideas on things to do down there when it's rainy and overcast? I definitely want to hit up the historic sites if the weather holds up (U of V, Montichello, a winery, etc) - but we may have to improvise due to weather. Any suggestions for rainy-day activities!!??

Oh, and love the chats - you guys are great!!

The Going Out Gurus: Rosslyn, check out this list of Charlottesville must-sees, a couple might keep you out of the rain. -- Maura

________________________________________________

Alexandria VA: Is there anywhere in Virginia or DC where a New Orleans girl can find Abita Turbodog or Purple Haze, preferably to drink outside.

The Going Out Gurus: Alexandria, I was just talking about this with a New Orleans girl last night. Turbodog is currently on draft at Galaxy Hut, which has a tiny off-street patio. I know it was on at the Reef and Bedrock Billiards, but I think it's off. Call the Reef, because the rooftop is to die for when the weather's like this. -- Fritz

________________________________________________

RE: White Stripes: You can get tickets now online at ticketmaster, if you use the password "elephant"

The Going Out Gurus: ok, we haven't tried that yet, but we'll take your word for it. Thanks for the tip.

________________________________________________

Need to impress mom: Help! I was hoping to take my mom to Obelisk when she come up to visit in 2 weeks, but the Post has some mixed reviews... Is it worth it, or should I look around some more?

The Going Out Gurus: I'd go there in a hot second. -- Alexa

________________________________________________

Waterfalls: Probably won't happen this weekend but, if it ever stops raining, do you know of any waterfalls that people can swim in? I don't want a place littered with people if at all possible. Appreciate it!

The Going Out Gurus: Here's that story about waterfalls. Tell you what: since this is a popular request, I'll add that story and the story on Maryland and Virginia lakes to the Summer Guide when the chat is over. -- Anne

________________________________________________

Fairfax, Va.: Hye GoG's, I was wondering, have any of you been to the new Code DC night at Nation on Friday's? If so, how is it, how are the resident DJ's, crowd, etc? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: I wrote about Code for Weekend last month, Fairfax, and it was a mixed bag. The guest DJs are good -- Steve Lawler, tomorrow's Deep Dish -- and I like Dirty Handz's hip-hop mix in the front room. But the crowd was odd. It seemed like a mix of former Buzz regulars and dress-to-impress Dream denizens. The music was good, but energy was certainly lacking.

Still, how can you say no to late night with Deep Dish? -- Fritz

________________________________________________

Washington D.C.: Hello Gurus -
Have any of you been to a FONZ after hours Young Professionals event at the zoo? What are they like?

The Going Out Gurus: Washington, if you can, make a plan to check out next week's Croc the Casbah. Awful name, but tunes from Washington Social Club and chow from Lebanese Taverna can't be too bad.

My advice: If you go, bring friends. They're fun, but there's not much mingling. -- Maura

________________________________________________

Arlington, Va.: Help!! Going out with a new guy tonite - what is something fun and unique to do, in D.C. or close in? I'm thinking one step above dinner and drinks. Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: It's going to be a gorgeous night, would you consider picnicking at Wolf Trap with the Queen of Soul? You can order a picnic in advance from Wolf Trap's caterers, note: pricier than doing it yourself.

Sitting outside is the easiest way to step up dinner and drinks. Have you considered Taqueria Poblano (great margs) and sorbet at Del Ray Dreamery, both on Mount Vernon Ave. It's a bit rough around the edges but the beers are cold, the hush puppies fried and the crabs are "local" at the Quarter Deck.

Anyone else have an idea? -- Kate

________________________________________________

Farragut North, Washington, D.C.: What up, G's -- A gaggle of out-of-town friends will be here in DC this weekend, and one is particularly sensitive to cigarette smoke. I'm wracking my brain trying to figure out a hang out spot for after dinner drinks and conversation, but I'm drawing a blank. Any ideas?

The Going Out Gurus: In D.C.? Hmmm. If you're going to be in Old Town, Founders' Restaurant and (not quite a) Brewpub on King Street is smoke-free. There aren't many smoke-free bars in the city proper. I'd say you should examine the list of outdoor bars, as they're less smoky, in my opinion. Anyone want to suggest a good smoke-free spot in Washington? -- Fritz

________________________________________________

Adams Morgan, Washington, D.C.: Whisper isn't coming back? But it was doing so well there... Also, the Angry Inch seems next to go. Every time I walk by there there are roughly 3 people drinking, and I think 2 of them are barbacks. Have we finally been oversaturated w/ frat guy hangouts?

The Going Out Gurus: I dunno, Adams Morgan. Angry Inch seems to be doing okay on the weekends -- that upstairs certainly helps -- but you're right that the main area often looks empty during the week. In terms of oversaturation, well, I wouldn't want to open a hotel lounge these days. -- Fritz

Mt Pleasant can't decide....: Seems to be a great week for live music comin' up. I'm on a budget, though, so I don't have the funds for Theivery, Polyphonic, and Escobar. Is Polyphonic not to be missed or would it be better to just go see the good old Corp? The descriptions of Poly makes them seem a little bit like "Phish--The A Capella Album." Hmmmph...

The Going Out Gurus: Hello Mt. Pleasant. (by the way, have you ever heard Tuscadero's song "Mt Pleasant." If not, you should track it down.) Anyway, I'd say go for the Polyphonic Spree, just for the size and spectacle alone. I doubt that a group of two dozen can stay together for very long. If you go, try for Tuesday's show and get there in time for the very odd Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players. - Joe

________________________________________________

McLean, VA: What local vineyard has the best tours and picnic areas? I'm looking for somewhere within 1 hour of DC.

The Going Out Gurus: Readers, what's your pick of the wineries? Tell us your favorites.

________________________________________________

Washington, DC: Art Gurus! My mom is coming into town this weekend and I am scrambling to come up with some fun activities. Last visit, she was mighty impressed with the Edouard Vuillard exhibit. Anything of equal merit going on this weekend at the art scene? Many thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: The new retrospective of American modernist painter Marsden Hartley opens at the Phillips opens Saturday. And, since it's the Kalorama Museum Walk weekend, admission is free at the Phillips and nearby museums. Find details here. My favorite show of late just might be Robert Frank at the Corcoran with the accompanying photography exhibit "Both Sides of the Street." Glorious stuff. -- Maura

Re: DC beer geek: The Saloon on U Street is another good place with a great beer selection that could accomodate your party. I went there for the first time a few weeks ago, and I was pleasantly surprised at the variety and quality of their beers. This is just my humble opinion of course...

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, the Saloon has an excellent selection of Belgian, German and Austrian beers that you don't find everywhere else. Thanks, beer geek. -- Fritz

________________________________________________

Maryland: Do you know if there is still a shuttle running from Dupont Circle to Dream club? If yes, where can I find details?

The Going Out Gurus: I believe you can still get a shuttle to Dream on Saturdays. Check http://www.dcdream.com. -- Fritz

________________________________________________

Ananpolis, MD: Fritz - Just read your artcile on Annapolis - Although I was glad to see you mentioned Eastport and it's lack of tourist attractions (compared to downtown), you left off one of the best things to happen to West Street, right next to Sean Donlans...Tsunami. It's one of the only places in town (so far) where you can hear cool music, people don't wear flip flops and khakis and the food is pretty darn good too.

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks, Annapolis. I actually left off a bunch of places that are worth writing about (Tsunami, 49 West and Heroes, for starters) because of space. You're right: Tsunami is a pretty cool space. Everyone go check it out while you're enjoying this nice weather... -- Fritz

________________________________________________

Alexandria, Va.: Just thought you folks should mention that it is Pride Week right now with tons of stuff going on every night and this weekend.

The Going Out Gurus: Indeedy. It's is Pride Week. And in addition to Saturday's parade and the usual, unusual parties (check into the "tea dance" and Cobalt's Disco Ball), this year's Fest offers extras like a fairly substantial mini film fest. I'm psyched for "Tipping the Velvet," the BBC-sponsored, corset-ripping adaptation of Sarah Waters saucy novel. It's tomorrow night at 9. -- Kate

________________________________________________

Mt Pleasant: Thanks, I'll try to wrangle my funds for Theivery and Polyphonic. I miss Tuscadero.

The Going Out Gurus: Yeah, they should do a reunion show.

________________________________________________

No Smoking help: I do believe the Clarendon Ballroom is smoke-free yes/no?

The Going Out Gurus: Yes. But I wouldn't send anyone there for after-dinner drinks conversation on weekends. Would you? -- Fritz

________________________________________________

K street: You can rent a Viper at http://www.viperrent.com/ They are located in Maryland. They also may be able to point you in the right direction for other exotic rental companies.

The Going Out Gurus: Sounds 2 fast and yet fast enough. Cheers.

________________________________________________

Smoke free: Au contraire - there is Mr. Henrys' upstairs bar on the Hill. There's usually jazz there too.

The Going Out Gurus: Duh. With the fabulous Kevin Cordt quartet. I stand corrected (or at least blushing). -- Fritz

________________________________________________

Washington, D.C.: GOG's--Do you know anything about Nectar in Foggy Bottom?

The Going Out Gurus: Yes. I know that I liked Zuki Moon in that spot better. The food is mixed (some very delicious, some bland), and the service -- when we went -- seemed fussy and affected. Still, because the kitchen is so tiny, there is no walk-in fridge. Hence the use of only the freshest ingredients. -- Alexa.

________________________________________________

Adams Morgan, Washington, D.C.: What's the word on the Notorius night at Spy Lounge? I heard it's Britpop/new wave. Is it dancing, or just lounging and listening? What's the crowd like? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: There's not a lot of room to dance at Spy -- it's a bit narrow for that. The DJs are good, the drinks are a touch pricey, and there's supposedly a dress code (no sneakers, etc). Take that as you will. -- Fritz

________________________________________________

Reston, Va.: I'm so happy I finally have a chance to submit a question!! I love you guys!! My brother and sister-in-law are visiting this weekend. It's his first time to DC so the memorials are a must see. My problem is, last weekend I had visitors in which I did the same thing. Any advice to make it more enjoyable without sending them alone with a map and a smile.

The Going Out Gurus: Well, Reston, some overlap may be unavoidable. You might try hitting the monuments at night, should weather permit. Do get off the Mall, fall into some neighborhoods and tool around. Always the best way to get to know a city anyway. Devise your own walking tour. -- Maura

________________________________________________

Washington, D.C.: The Reader's Choice should have a "Best New" Category. My vote would be "Saint-Ex." Just as a stand-alone bar or a stand-alone restaurant I wouldn't give it my top vote, but it's definitely the best new place in D.C. of this past year.

The Going Out Gurus: That's an excellent suggestion and I'll add it to my file.
If we had "I made a great suggestion in Got Plans but all I got was this dumb T-shirt" T-shirts, I'd send you one. But we don't. All I can offer you is my simple song, "(ahem) It's a little bit funny, this feeling inside ..."
Seriously, NICE work, DC. -- Kate

________________________________________________

Annapolis, MD Again: Fritz, Just saw your response - FYI you probably already heard but the owners of Tsunami (all Australian no less) are opening a new place off West St next Spring called Metropolitan and it will have a roof top bar.

The Going Out Gurus: I hadn't heard about the name or the rooftop bar. Both sound fab. Thanks, Annapolis.

Alexandria, Va.: Re: last week's discussion on Backyard Games:

A friend of mine made a giant jenga set for his backyard BBQs out of 2x4's. The rules are the same as regular jenga, but there's a certain entertaining risk factor when you combine 2x4's and beer that you don't get with the mini-version.

The Going Out Gurus: I must meet this friend and Jenga with y'all. I'm mad for games, portable and goofy over-sizes ones. Dangerously oversized hints of thrills and spills I must witness. My word is oak, my Jenga is balsa. -- Kate

________________________________________________

Alexandria, VA: For the Turbodog searcher, the Majestic Lounge at the Evening Star Cafe in Del Ray on Mt. Vernon has it on draft. They also have several tables where you can sit outside on nice days. Enjoy!

The Going Out Gurus: That's such a cool little lounge, and they're always bringing on interesting beers. (Also, I love the Trivial Pursuit table.) Thanks, Alexandria. -- Fritz

________________________________________________

Washington, DC: Smoke Free? Just go someplace out side! Also, doesn't the American History Museum have some jazz nights?

The Going Out Gurus: Good point WDC, the IMAX Jazz Cafe has jazz every Friday -- along with dinner, a movie, and no smoking. -- Maura

________________________________________________

Flea Markets?: Do you know of any flea markets this weekend? Preferably on Saturday. Is there one in Georgetown? Thanks guys!!!

The Going Out Gurus: I have heard that there's a Saturday morning flea in the parking lot of Lee High School in Arlington. Can anyone confirm this? -- Kate

________________________________________________

U Street DC: I looked at the "outdoor bar" feature on the washingtonpost.com web site yesterday, and you make no mention of Local 16 or Trios, two of my favorite places. A gross oversight, if you ask me.

The Going Out Gurus: Hmmm. I thought I mentioned Trio's (together with the Fox and Hounds) in the Dupont roundup. Local 16 will appear in the currently-being-updated guide to bars and restaurants that aren't in the six neighborhoods already covered. It's one of my favorites, too. -- Fritz

________________________________________________

Field Day update: Not sure if anyone else is making the trek to NJ this weekend, but the Field Day fest (Beck, Radiohead, Beastie Bors, Blur, etc) has been relocated - instead of a two-day campout near NYC, it's a one day gig at the Meadowlands in NJ, and NO ORIGINAL TICKETS will be honored, you have to buy new ones. The upside? Tickets are still available and I got pretty good seats.

(If this is a duplicate submission, I apologize, I keep getting an error when I try to submit).

The Going Out Gurus: Yeah, this is a bummer. Field Day looked like it had all the makings of a great festival. Now it has been moved to the Meadowlands. Not quite the same thing. But you're right. Tickets are still available.

________________________________________________

Alexandria, Va.: Help! We have reservations for my birthday next week at 2941, but I'm hearing mixed reviews about the place these days...anyone there have an opinion? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: I think you'll like it Alex. It feels like a special occasion place -- vast two-storey windows overlooking a "pond," soaring ceilings hung with huge orange jellyfish. The food was lush and delicious and the bread was some of the best I've had. That said, it is extremely popular at the moment and may be struggling to keep up? -- Alexa

________________________________________________

To Georgetown: When I was 18 at Georgetown, I used to go to Georgetown Billiards. After they shut down the Charing Cross, that is.

The Going Out Gurus: Georgetown Billiards still lets in the 18-and-over crowd. Lots of fun stuff to do there, too: pool, darts, foosball ... -- Fritz

________________________________________________

Petworth: Ok, so I go away and come back to find a hole in Columbia Rd. They knocked down Mr Henry's!

Now I know it's been closed for quite a while now, and I've been wondering what they were going to do with it, but they knocked it down?!

So, what's going in there now?

The Going Out Gurus: Hmmm, probably another Starbucks.

________________________________________________

U Street DC : Uhh, yeah you did mention Trio. I stand corrected. I shan't question you again.

The Going Out Gurus: No, please do question. We're all human, after all. Except for Cyborg Joe.

________________________________________________

Burke, VA: GOGs, thanks for taking my question. I've been trying to get it posted for the past 3 weeks, so hopefully this will be of a great help!! I went to Virginia Tech and a few of the bars have a shuffle board game, one that you use your hands throwing discs on a sandy surface. It is sooo much fun and I'm dying to find a place up anywhere in the DC area that has it. If you all don't know of one..would the audience be able to help??

Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Burke, our apologies.
Readers, you'll help this person find some odd shuffleboard-like game, won't you?

________________________________________________

Alexandria, VA: Just wanted to second your suggestion of Taqueria Poblano or the Dreamery to the person who is looking for something to do on a first date. Tonight is the first Thursday of the month, and in Del Ray that means live music, free samples, give aways and other fun stuff all along Mt. Vernon Ave. Plenty of dogs, too.

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, you AND I give the best advices!

________________________________________________

Washington, DC: CAn you tell me about the free Shakespeare n Rock Creek?

The Going Out Gurus: I can indeedy. The Shakespeare Free for All production of Hamlet runs through Sunday at Carter Barron Amphitheater in Rock Creek. Get same day tickets one of three places: The Washington Post, Carter Barron or the Shakespeare Theater, but read here for details.

I checked it out this past Sunday -- Worth any wait in line, I'd say. Enjoy. -- Maura

Dancing in DC: A friend is coming into town this weekend from NYC, and we want to go dancing in DC on Saturday night. It's been forever since I've been dancing in DC, and I no longer know the current club scene. I'm hoping for a Metro-accessible club that plays a diverse range of music (techno, house, & maybe some 80's dance music) for 2 30-something women. Maybe a multi-level club that has different music styles on each level? Do any of these clubs have "VIP lists" so we can sign up in advance (and hopefully not have to wait in line)? Thanks for your help!

The Going Out Gurus: Hmm. You'd be better off on Friday than Saturday for the whole different-music-on-different-levels deal. There's Dream, which has different music, but there seems to be some debate about whether they still have a shuttle (the Web site says yes, but there's no mention in the ads or e-mails). You can sign up for the guest list at www.dcdream.com. You could also try MCCXXIII, which has a new classics-and-house formula on Saturday nights, and you can sign up for free admission and an open bar from 9 to 11 if you send an email to 1223@eventconcepts.com.

That's a start ... -- Fritz

Re:Shuffle Board: I believe that Buffalo Billards has one in the back room

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks. Burke, you listening?

________________________________________________

For the visiting little bro: Maybe he'd like Georgetown Billiards--they've got pool tables, air hockey, ping pong, plus a juke box and loungey couches. It's 18+, I believe.

The Going Out Gurus: Great minds think alike. -- Fritz

________________________________________________

Alexandria, VA: Do you all ever just sit there and say to each other "Why are they asking me this again?"

The Going Out Gurus: We never say anything to each other. We're too completely absorbed in answering questions.

________________________________________________

Hiking (Wash DC): I hope that you can get to this question. I want to go hiking this weekend. Fell in love with it back in April when I went to Arizona and hiked. Any thoughts on Cedar Run/White Oak Canyon or Old Rag? My s/o and I are going.

The Going Out Gurus: Both are popular hikes in Shenandoah National Park. The Cedar Run/White Oak Canyon circuit hike goes up and down ravines and passes by waterfalls. It's rocky and pretty strenuous going at 8-9 miles. Old Rag is the granite beast everyone wants to conquer. To hike up its 3,200+ foot summit and back will take you all day. Before you set out on either course, make sure you're prepared in supplies and fitness. For more info, call the park at 540-999-3500. Local hiking clubs and the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club can help you find advice and more trails to explore. -- Anne

WDC: SAKI opened last night, has 3 floors (top floor will open in 6 months), ground floor has a live dj that was playing last night at 730 --i stopped in after a beer down the street at rumba and they were offering free sushi and sashimi. looks cool.

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks, WDC. Free food. Sounds great. If only I didn't have plans tonight...

Eastern Market, Washington, D.C.: Can you tell me what places near Eastern Market are good for dinner? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Our fave: Montmartre. -- MM confirmed by AB

Re: Backyard Games: How could you forget the best outdoor game of all time - Bocce? One of the few games you can play while still holding a drink. Great for the beach too.

The Going Out Gurus: In truth Bocce is the third best game, croquet (previously the best) is now the second-best backyard game. Oversized Jenga is king. --Kate

Arlington: hey GoGs - What's the word on Continental in Rosslyn? It looks cool, but the problem is once you are there, there's too many options close by...
Also, for the poster asking about 2941, I've been there a few times over several months and every time I love it. I think it's one of the best places to eat around.

The Going Out Gurus: Not sure what you mean, Arlington. I think Rosslyn's kind of dead, and I'd rather play pool at Continental than, say, Whitlow's. -- Fritz

Arlington: Where's there a bar in N VA or MD (not DC) that's real smoky and keeps serving you beer without you having to ask them? I want a place to go and drink. Easy to pick up women (i.e. not in DC) would be a plus; like slightly plump or white trash or something like that.

Does such a place exist around here?

The Going Out Gurus: We just had to share this guy with the rest of you.

Re: 2x4 Jenga: That sounds way fun. Even better would be if you write truth or dares on each 2x4. Remove a block successfully and then follow the instructions on the block! Hours of amusement for you and your friends...

The Going Out Gurus: I am making "truth or dare" cupcakes for "sale" as band gimmickry in lieu of T-shirts this Sunday at the Velvet Lounge. Yes, T 'n' D should be incorporated into every occassion. And thoroughly. -- Kate

Staring out the Window at the Sunny Day: Hi Gurus,
I'm going to happy hour tonight and one of my friends is requesting a healthy option for food. Are there any bars in the Dupont, Adams Morgan, Farragut area that have more than fried food specials for happy hour?

The Going Out Gurus: I'm a huge fan of the happy hour at Uni in Dupont, where sushi is $1 a piece and beer is like $3. Other Japanese specialties are available, too. It runs from 5 to 7, I believe. -- Fritz

Dupont Circle, Washington, D.C.: My friends and I are debating between Zola and Andale for dinner this Saturday. Care to weigh in? We're 30-ish and looking for fun, drinks and good food!

The Going Out Gurus: Zola.

Smoking in the Boys Room: Speaking of smoking, do you know if the mayor is planning on making DC bars smoke-free? It's sweeping the nation, and I'm surprised that I haven't heard anything yet.

Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: Well, if they can't do it in Montgomery County, what makes you think it would pass in D.C.?

Washington, D.C.: With all of these great happy hours going on, how much should I tip the bartender when I get my $1 or $2 beer? Should I tip each time?

The Going Out Gurus: I usually do $1 every other round or so. -- Fritz

suggestion: Gurus, have you considered adding a "My Entertainment" section to the site that would let each person save their entertainment faves in a personal calendar and addressbook? There is so much good content on your site, but then I forget all the restaurants I want to go to, as well as all the events I first see online weeks in advance. It would help tremendously. Just a thought.

The Going Out Gurus: Would that we could, sug.

Logan Circle, Washington, D.C.: Has anyone tried the pizza from Matchbox? I need a good New York slice (not pizza mart). If Lombardi's in NY opened a location here, they would make billions.

The Going Out Gurus: We loved the Matchbox Pizza. Loved its saucy sausage-iness. You'll like it too, I bet. -- Alexa

Alexandria, VA: Hi there. Looking for a fun place for boyfriend and I to go w/friends in Dupont or Adams Morgan area for a few drinks, apps, and maybe some pool or darts. Cheap of course - saving for a house!

Thanks - love reading the chats!!!

The Going Out Gurus: Townhouse Tavern is a good idea for drinks, snacks and pool with friends. And there's always Stetson's. -- Fritz

Washington, DC: I'm submitting early in hopes that you gurus have some creative ideas for me! My father is retiring this month and I'd like to throw him a retirement party for about 30-50 people. Could you recommend a restaurant/event space that is convenient to the beltway (people will be coming from all over) and isn't too outrageously expensive. Thanks so much!

The Going Out Gurus: Washington, Chef Geoffs on New Mexico, Normandy Farms in Potomac and Tragara in Bethesda are a few easy to reach spots that can all accomodate your party.

oh mount pleasant, my mount pleasant: loved the tuscadero song. went to their show and screamed my head off until they played it.

anyway, for the person looking for cheap, metro-accessible frameshops, the framers workshop in tenleytown's great. it's cheap b/c ostensibly you're doing the work yourself. but they hold your hand every step of the way and oftentimes just do it for you.

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks.

Alexandria, VA: Is the Old Dominion Brewery's Beer Festival happening this year? I couldn't find anything on their web site but I seem to remember its usually in June.

The Going Out Gurus: Yes. June 28-29, out in Ashburn. -- Fritz

Arlington, Va: Suggestions for taking scuba lessons, preferably in the Arlington area. I am going to Hawaii in Fall and don't want to waste time on lessons while I am there.

The Going Out Gurus: Some Northern Virginia places to try are: American Water Sports of Virginia based in Seven Corners (703-534-3636), The Dive Shop (703-698-7220), Sea Ventures Inc. (703-425-7676).

Quick last minute Dc: Hello GoGs,

I just wanted to publicly say thank you to the Company that put on Hamlet last night at Carter Barron. They were terrific, especially Hamlet and Polonius. Unfortunately the rain set in thirty minutes before the end and my group left. I don't know if they ended up finishing the play or not.
Anyway, what a wonderful space -- I'd never been there before. Is there a way to obtain a schedule of other actvities at Carter Barron? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: There's more all summer at Carter Barron. Some of the best of it is even free. -- Maura

The Going Out Gurus: That's it, folks. Have a great week. Thanks for your interest. Oh, and one last thing, our Maura will be speaking on Metro Connection tomorrow at 1 p.m. That's 88.5 WAMU. We are positively a-bulge with pride, and know you (her friends) will be too.
