The Starry Eye Astrologer

Hosted by Charlene Lichtenstein
Special to washingtonpost.com

Monday, March 17, 2003; 6 p.m. ET

What's your sign? Do you want to know what the planets and heavenly bodies have aligned this year -- in your career, in romance or surprises in your daily life? Each week, "Madame" Lichtenstein, takes your questions on sun signs, lunar influences and all things in the stars.

Lichtenstein's skills run in the family. Her great aunt, Etta Weimar, was the famous Romanian card reader to both kings and queens. A native of New York City, Lichtenstein was educated in Europe where she pursued the study of tarot and astrology. She returned to New York in 1974 and has lived in Greenwich Village ever since, dispensing advice whether requested or not.

Lichtenstein's monthly and weekly astrology columns are carried in newspapers across the country. When not writing or working on her Web site, AccessNewAge.com/zscope, Lichtenstein offers private consultation. She is a member of the National Council of Geocosmic Research and often lectures on both astrology and tarot.

Wondering how Mercury in retrograde affects your day-to-day life? What eclipses means for you and your loved ones? How to get in touch with your rising sign?

The transcript follows.

Starbite of the week:
It seems timely to examine Saddam Hussein's birth chart tonight. He was born on April 28, 1937, 8:55am at 43:42W, 34:36N. Hussein's personal planets and rising sign are as follows - sun and mercury in Taurus, moon and mars in Sagittarius, venus in Aries and Pisces rising. A top line assessment of these placements indicate a strong and stubborn personality - slow moving but deliberate (sun), with unyielding and relatively unchanging philosophies and opinions matched with a clear, steadfast style of communication (mercury). His love nature (venus) is fiery and pioneering and he can be very mutable and expansive when he takes action (mars) and in how he displays emotion (moon). To those who do not know him well, he appears more intuitive and emotional than logical (ascendant) and he can use this piscean face to his advantage.

This is a dramatic and transforming time for him - Pluto the planet of volcanic change is transiting Sagittarius and about to cross the top of his chart. There will be an upending of the landscape in his public persona and status in the community. This Pluto transit will make an easy aspect to his first house planets (house of new beginnings) and I would say that he may have an opportunity to sidestep this conflict and begin anew somewhere else. There is also a square to his natal Neptune in the 7th house of open enemies which can indicate an under-estimation of his recognized enemies.

Chiron, the asteroid indicating a "wounded warrior" is in his 3rd house of communication and one's immediate neighborhood and is about to be opposed by transiting Pluto which means to me one of two things - physical injury near where he lives or a diminishment of the impact of his communication. His power of communication may be irreparably harmed.

It is a time of great stress and change and Saddam Hussein is in the middle of a particularly interesting astrological transit. How these transits will manifest will be evident soon enough.

And now let’s hear what you have to say. Please include your birth date, time and place for all astrology questions. And, if you have any feedback on some of my past answers, please send them along!

Washington, D.C.: Hi!
Me: Born in Canton, Ohio, 1/14/70 at 12:12 a.m.
Him: Born in Kansas, 2/27/71 (lives in Bethesda, Md.)

I asked you a question a while ago about the love of my life (currently we are not together). And you were RIGHT ON! You thought there would be some movement (in the positive direction) in the middle of March! And you said to give the relationship more time (which I am doing).

There has been a small amount of movement exactly mid March! Do you see this still moving in the right direction for us to be together? Any suggestions?

Also, I am in the process of selling my D.C condo. I am thinking of taking a break, from D.C. life, and moving to Ohio for a month or two to spend time with my family (after I sell my condo). What do you see surrounding this? Would this be a positive move towards life balance? Would the move have any effect on the outcome of my relationship with the love of my life?

Thank you so much for your thoughts! You really helped to point me in the right direction before!

Charlene Lichtenstein:
Thanks for the feedback.
Just to recap – you have sun and venus in cap, moon in aries. He has sun in pisces, moon in aries and venus in cap.

His Piscean sun is finally feeling a bit of relief from that transiting Pluto in sag so I expect the movement will continue. Adding to that you have venus, the planet of love, transiting your 5th house of romance from March 3-28 and the optimistic sun and contemplative mercury moving into your 7th house of relationships on March 22. Brighter opportunities, minds in sync.

Make good use of time and see what can develop!

As far as your move is concerned, let me know where in Ohio and I will run a relocation chart for you in time for next week's show.

New York, N.Y.: Dear Charlene:

What's going on in my life? I've been out of work since I was downsized when the recession began, and I've worked in dead end temp positions on and off. I've had interviews and some almost-had-its for career jobs, but thus far no offer. See any breakthrough? Should I keep at it? Or go to school to change altogether? D.O.B. Aug. 8th, 1969, 10:30PM, New York, N.Y. Twenty degrees Aries rising, Moon at 1 degree Cancer.

Charlene Lichtenstein: You have sun in leo, moon in cancer (thanks!) mercury in virgo, venus in cancer and mars in sag. And aries rising (thanks again).

Basically you have a dramatic and sunny personality with a careful precise mind and manner of communication. You love deeply and can be very sensitive when you are in love. When you take action it is expansive and lucky albeit not always graceful!

Aries rising should place Capricorn on the cusp of your 10th house of career. Wherever cap sits in our chart it is where we have to work extra hard for our success. Capricorn is the sign of difficult beginnings and excellent endings. As you continue to work (and struggle) you will learn from hard experience and learn from your mistakes. You can go farther than you ever thought possible because you do not give up.

You are in for an energizing period - mars, the planet of action has moved into your 10th house of career on March 5 and will be there through 4/22. You may have more oomph and may see some things that were stagnating but are not in full play. Make good use of this time to send out feelers and recontact.

Mt. Shasta, Calif.: I am wondering whether I should register for more college classes, or if I should concentrate on my present job in hopes of gaining a promotion. Your help would give me a better insight on my problem. My DOB is 12-28-82; Pasadena, Calif. 11:45 p.m. Thank You.

Charlene Lichtenstein: You have sun in capricorn, mercury in capricorn and mars in aquarius. Possibly libra rising which would place cancer on the cusp of your 10th house of career.

You are generally a serious and hard working person who is able to take unorthodox action to make things happen. You have an independent streak which is quite unusual for caps and can make this work very well for you in your climb to the top.

Interestingly, Saturn, the planet of problems and delays and hard work is hovering in your house of higher learning (college) and I see this to mean that going the educational route may be harder than you think now. But if you are prepared to work hard and struggle, it can pay off after a time.

I do not know what type of career you have now. Cancer on the 10th would need a workplace that is a family and provides a great deal of emotional satisfaction. Do you have that? If so then stick with it a bit longer.

Santa Barbara, Calif.: I have long been a student of the Edgar Cayce readings on astrology. Are you familiar with them? In particular the readings mentioned a difference between physical birth time and spiritual birth time, the point at which the soul 'entered' the body. Usually spiritual birth was said to be one to two hours before physical birth. Further, the time of spiritual birth was said to be a more reliable indicator of one's horoscope time. Any comment?
The 'birth' of the United States of America was given in the readings as 7/4/1776, at 5:51:29 p.m.,in Philadelphia.
What do you see for the USA?

Charlene Lichtenstein: I am familiar with Edgar Cayce and have read about a variety of opinions on birth times - conception, soul entering etc. It is all very interesting but I tend to go with "first breath". It is easier because it is the time that is recorded and sometimes if a birth takes longer (or shorter) it is the one really standard form. Just my opinion.

I will be addressing the birth chart of the US in the next week's starbite. In fact there is great discussion as to what the real birth chart of the US really is -- and what the rising sign is. More on that in the coming weeks!

Washington, D.C.: Hi Charlene. Heeding to your advice given back in July 2001, I have spent the last year or so opening myself up to relationships and the possibility of falling in love (dealing with Venus in Capricorn is tough). However, I remain an Aquarius woman unlucky in love. What gives? Also, I am planning to move to California at the end of this year for a job. Would the west coast be a better fit?
Thanks, a fellow star gazer
(Birth info: Feb 6, 1974 at 8:53 p.m. in Central Ohio)

Charlene Lichtenstein: Not sure what you have been doing to expand your range of opportunity but there are a couple of things that are going on that you need to be aware of -

Venus in cap lacks confidence and once you know that , you can give yourself that little extra push to overcome your fears. It also indicates some delays as you are seeking someone older or more established (sometimes wealthier?) than you. That takes time. You are selective.

You are also in the middle of your Saturn Return which is a three year period (27-30) of stress change and frustration. You wnat things NOW but they either do not come or if they do come, they are not what you want after all. You are changing and you need to give yourself time and space to learn your life lessons. Good news - you have less than a year to go.

Read more about the return at www.TheStarryEye.com on the zodiascope page.

Greenbelt, Md.: I want to know about leos.

Charlene Lichtenstein: What about 'em?
They are bold, brash, beautiful, regal, generous and need loads of attention!

Somewhere, USA: Hi Charlene,
Submitting early in hopes of a response. I feel like my life is transitioning, just not sure what is transitioning (financially, home life, relationships). Just would like to know if you foresee anything for this year.

Anchorage, Alaska 5/28/1971 8:05 a.m.

A Confused Gemini

Charlene Lichtenstein: okay - you have sun in gemini, moon in cancer, mercury in taurus, venus in taurus, mars in aquarius and possibly cancer rising.

Generally you are inquisitive, friendly, intelligent and very social. You feel deeply and can be a bit sensitive. You are a clear and solid communicator and can take action in a unique and very individualist manner.

Currently Saturn the planet of problems is buried in your 12th house of hidden things, things we keep from ourselves and spiritual issues. Are you questioning basic life principles, have you been surprised and disappointed by someone who you might have trusted? This will pass this year around June but still may have you gun shy about starting new directions.

Pluto the planet of transformation is in your job sector so that may also be an area of change. Good news -- as the sun enters aries on Mar 22 it will shine in your career house. Greater optimism and hope and opportunity. Make good use of this energy.

I hope that helps.

Dulles, Va.: Hi - I've had some very big changes in my life/attitude over the last year. While I am very comfortable with my career right now I have wonderings about my personal relationships, both friendships and love life in general. Part of the changes in my life have involved finally doing things that I want to do, but some of these choices are backfiring on me for example, lots of scheduling conflicts and classes cancelled, etc. Am I in some sort of 'blocked' period right now and when is it going to clear up?

Washington, D.C.
June 12 1966
02:08 a.m.

Charlene Lichtenstein: Let's see - you have sun in gemini, mercury in cancer, venus in taurus and mars in gemini. Possibly aries rising.

Generally you are friendly, intelligent and charming. You are an emotional thinker and communicator. In love you are steadfast, loyal and sensuous but can fall into a bit of a rut when you get really comfortable. You are a great debater and fight with words and idea rather than physical confrontation.

I can see that you would have areas of change and frustration - saturn is currently in gemini and you have both your sun and mars in gemini. This transit can put a damper on your general outlook (sun) as well as your actions (mars). Also, jupiter, the planet of luck has been retrograde and it has been sitting in your 5th house of romance.

But good news all around - Jupiter is redirecting on April 4 and you will be too wonderful for words and very lucky in all sorts of fun pastimes. Also, Saturn is grinding its way through gemini and is passing over your sun now.
Patience and perseverence!!

Englewood, N.J.: I mailed several resumes for a new teaching position in various towns where I live in the past two weeks. I haven't heard from any school district. Will I hear and land a new position soon?

Also, is there a marriage in my chart?

Birth date: June 17, 1956, 2:05 a.m., Astoria, N.Y.

Thank you.

Charlene Lichtenstein: When did you mail these resumes - check to see that hey were not posted during a void of course moon, an eclipse or during mercury retrograde. All three phenomena can cause delays or even disappointments. TIming by the planets is one of the best uses of astrology. Read more at www.TheStarryEye.com and www.AccessNewAge.com moon charts.

You have sun and mercury in gemini and mars in pisces. Possibly aries rising. This places aggressive mars in your 10th house of career so I would say that if you want it go after it now while the mars oomph is there!

Marriage? Why not? Just wait until Jupiter, the planet of luck, redirects in your 5th house in early April. Romantic possibilities fall into your lap, if you are ready to receive them. Go out and do fun things - the arts, theater, hobbies etc, and you may just meet someone interesting.

Denver, Colo.: Hello Madam! I am a gay male born 10/11/1969 at 12:33 p.m. in Camp Springs, Md. (Andrews AFB). I just can't seem to catch a break in the love department. I recently met a (seemingly) great guy born 8/14/1970 (no birth time ... but wouldn't be surprised if he had Libra on the ascendant) near Cleveland, Ohio ... and we've hit it off pretty well.

Unfortunately, his ex is creating some challenges for us ... so much so that I don't know if I should continue. Should I? and, what's been going on in my relationship sector lately and when, pray tell, will that energy change? Sorry if that counts as two questions!

Charlene Lichtenstein: Libra rising? So he is appears to be very charming and attractive? Appears ...

You have sun and moon in libra and venus in virgo which means that you are basically very charming and charismatic, striving for emotional harmony and diplomacy. Yet when you are in love you can be a bit picky and discerning. You are there for your man and will go to great lengths to make sure he is taken care of. But there is a part of you that really wants the recognition. It is hard for you to ask for it. Do not be a doormat. You may possibly have capricorn rising which places cancer on the 7th house of relationships. You ache for a relationship and can be very sensitive to your partners needs.

Your great guy is sun in leo, moon in cap and venus in libra. Connection. His sun is well matched to yours and his emotional make-up which can be a bit cool and detached seems to connect to your precise venusin virgo. So you "understand" him.

I would suggest that you stick with it a bit longer - especially in time for the Jupiter redirect in your sex sector in early April. Enjoy!!

Seattle, Wash.: Hello, I'm presenting going to retire. I am happy in this area, but have thoughts of living somewhere in the eastcoast. My family lives in that area, but it's been over 25yrs since I've lived close to them. I don't know if that's a good idea. I was born, November 3, 1943, 1:09AM, Brownsville TX.

Charlene Lichtenstein: Tell you what, resubmit your question with exactly where you are thinking of relocating and I will run a relocation chart for you in time for next weeks show.

We will see how good (or stressful) your chart looks for this east coast location.

Washington, D.C.: Hello Charlene:

I have been told by someone who reviewed my chart that I have the most signs in the 12th House (I think that's what she said...) that she's ever seen and that I have lots going on in my subconscious. Is this a problem? I know that it's very very easy for me to flip into a meditative state when I feel a need to rest, re-energize, or search more deeply. Does this make sense?

Charlene Lichtenstein: So you have a "stellium" which means that you have quite a few planets sitting in one particular area of your chart. That means that that area is of greater importance to you. It is not a good or bad thing - just an area that you want to concentrate on and work on.

It also depends on which planets are in that stellium. If your sun is one of those planets you need to succeed in that area before you will feel complete.

Send me your birth information and I can tell you more.

Fairfax, Va.: Dear Charlene..
I was born 7-9-48, 9:03pm, Phila.,PA..
Chaos, chaos & more chaos!
Any ideas, please? Thank you!

Charlene Lichtenstein: Second Saturn Return!!!!

So we have a Saturn Return every 27-30 years or so when Saturn returns to the exact placement we have in our birth charts. (Read more at www.TheStarryEye.com on the zodiascope page)

What were you grappling with at ages 27-30? You obviously need a few more lessons to learn.

Top line, you have sun cancer and possibly pisces rising which places transiting saturn currently in your 4th house of family, foundations, home and stuff that makes you feel secure. It is squaring your first house of new beginnings and new people. As Saturn progresses, you may have to grapple with how you take action (natal mars in virgo squared this transiting saturn) and your basic foundations.

More information of the source of the chaos would be helpful.

Somewhere, USA: How's It Look?: How does the immediate future look for someone born 10 July 73, near Chicago, IL, in the early evening?

Charlene Lichtenstein: You are in the middle of your Saturn return so if you have short term plans, expect things to take longer than expected.

You have sun in cancer, mercury and venus in leo and mars in aries. You are a very feisty person and that may strike people as unusual. Generally you are sensitive and caring and nurturing but you can be very dramatic, expansive and aggressive when you express an opinion or take action.

As you finish your Saturn Return you may see opportunities open up like a spigot. Just pace yourself through the summer.

Somewhere, USA: Hi Charlene,

I had written you last month about me and my boyfriend, and you had asked for birthdays, and place of birth. Here they are:

Me: 7-12-1980
Bombay, India

BF: 11-20-1979
Nairobi, Kenya

Charlene Lichtenstein: You have sun and moon in cancer and venus in gemini. Generally you feel deeply and can be very caring. When you are in love you can be very flirtatious and need a meeting of the minds with your partner.

He has sun in scorpio and moon and venus in sagittarius. He can be very intense in general but emotionally and when he is in love he can be expansive, more platonic and interested in international people.

You two have great connections in your hearts - both of you are sensitive and emotional sun signs and both have venus (how we express our love) in air signs. SO you understand what makes each of you tick in a love situation.

Looks good to me!

Fairfax, Va.: Charlene, I wrote you earlier this year on my birthday asking if this was my year to find Mr. Right. Not only have my few prospects fizzled, my job is not going well and my finances are not in great shape. What exactly does this year hold. My birth information is as follows - Born January 6th, 1996 in Harrisonburg Va.

Many thanks.

Charlene Lichtenstein: Can't be 1996 - please resubmit with the correct birth year.

Bethesda, Md.: Good evening. I've contemplating a job switch for sometime not. Currently, I work for a nonprofit that while I enjoy the people and the cause, I don't feel I am being challenged in my job. I have been thinking of going back to school to become an elementary school teacher. Money issues have always deterred me in the past. Do you think I should just go for it or will better opportunities open up for me in my current position? (Leo, 8/20/75, 10:44 a.m. Northeastern PA)

Charlene Lichtenstein: I sense a theme here tonight.
You are embarking on your first Saturn return which is a 3 year period of change and starts. (Read more at www.TheStarryEye.com on the zodiascope page). The return is a learning phase where Saturn makes us learn our life lessons and work on difficult areas of our chart whether we want to or not. Usually things that we begin during the return tend not to last because we are in a state of constant change and really don't know what we want.

For that reason I would suggest that rather than a dramatic break, take classes at night and ease into it. Maybe that will give you a bit of a charge so that your day job is a bit more bearable.

You have possibly libra rising which places saturn, planet of problems, in your higher education sector. Even more of a reason to proceed with caution.

Washington, D.C.: Reminder - Hi Charlene I submitted this relocation a couple weeks ago - and you asked me to resubmit for tonight. Thank you very much for charting this!

Hi - I enjoy your column and really hope to hear from you! I am a Leo, born 8/11/65 and am considering a relocation from Washington, DC to Miami, FL in the Spring. Any idea if this would be positive or negative? Thanks!

Charlene Lichtenstein: I am so sorry - just saw your question.
I promise to lead off with my answer for you in next weeks show.

Sorry and thank you for your patience.

Seattle, Wash.: It's me again (November 3, 1943, 1:09 a.m., Brownsville Tex.). If I move eastward, it seems that PA, KY or NC are possible areas for me. These states seem to draw my attention. I'm adventurous and can be a risk taker. I get along with all types of people.. Thanks, again.

Charlene Lichtenstein: Please email me at thestarryeye@aol.com with more exact city locations and I will see what I can suggest.

Charlene Lichtenstein: Oh my! We have run out of time. Thank you all for your great questions! For those who I couldn't get to, please try again next week = March 24 at 6p.

Until then, happy stargazing!

That wraps up today's show. Thanks to everyone who joined the discussion.
