Special to washingtonpost.com

Monday, March 24, 2003; 6 p.m. ET

What's your sign? Do you want to know what the planets and heavenly bodies have aligned this year -- in your career, in romance or surprises in your daily life? Each week, "Madame" Lichtenstein, takes your questions on sun signs, lunar influences and all things in the stars.

Lichtenstein's skills run in the family. Her great aunt, Etta Weimar, was the famous Romanian card reader to both kings and queens. A native of New York City, Lichtenstein was educated in Europe where she pursued the study of tarot and astrology. She returned to New York in 1974 and has lived in Greenwich Village ever since, dispensing advice whether requested or not.

Lichtenstein's monthly and weekly astrology columns are carried in newspapers across the country. When not writing or working on her Web site, AccessNewAge.com/zscope, Lichtenstein offers private consultation. She is a member of the National Council of Geocosmic Research and often lectures on both astrology and tarot.

Wondering how Mercury in retrograde affects your day-to-day life? What eclipses means for you and your loved ones? How to get in touch with your rising sign?

Starbite of the week:
It seems appropriate tonight to give a topline examination of the chart of the United States. While there are several versions of this chart (all trying to pin point the “birth time”), I will go with the one with Sagittarius rising, Sun in cancer, moon in aquarius, mercury and venus in cancer and mars in Gemini. Countries have charts, as do corporations and buildings and even major events. The U.S. chart has a stellium (a group of planets – in this case four - in one house) in the 7th house of one to one relationships. Relationships are very important to this country. The Sun is in the 7th indicating that relationships are especially important. Sagittarius rising gives the impression of one being very easygoing, somewhat lacking in grace but with boundless optimism, honesty and good humor. Generally very sentimental (Venus) fights usually with words (Mars) and can be an emotional communicator – one that speaks from the heart (Mercury).

Currently, Saturn, the planet of stress, problems and wisdom gained through hard work is conjuncting the U.S. mars in the 7th (open enemies) and squaring Neptune in the 9th (international) house. I see this as a warning that any action (Mars) taken must be preceded with careful thought and planning (Saturn) because there is something that we do not see that is illusion (Neptune). In addition, Pluto, (the planet of volcanic change) is opposing that natal Mars which I see to mean that actions can spur volcanic changes, possibly out of control. Pluto retrogrades and redirects and finally passes Mars in opposition after Sept 2005. This entire period is a time for careful, calculated action because the price of rash action is colossal.

And now let’s hear what you have to say. Please include your birth date, time and place for all astrology questions. And, if you have any feedback on some of my past answers, please send them along!

Continued from last week: Hi Charlene!

I'm the one who inquired last week about why so many of my planets are in the 12th House from last week. You mentioned a "stellium"?

You were right, apparently, about my sun being in the 12th House as well.

Here are my basics:

DOB: July 6, 1954
Time: 7:11 a.m.
Place: Honolulu, Hawaii

Numerologists love my numbers (especially the continuous numbers on the birth date and the 7:11 on my birth time) because my life is full of complete sequences, right down to my social security numbers and phone numbers -- over which I obviously have no direct control. Everything seems so orderly for me.

Palm readers have found luck lines going continuously around my hand. One even found a perfect "psychic cross" in the palm of my hand, but never explained what that was.

All interesting stuff.

Thanks for your thoughts!

Charlene Lichtenstein: A stellium is where you have three or more planets in one house. It shows an intensity of planetary energy and it is where we tend to focus more energy and attention.

You may be interested in reading more about the 12th house. I can recommend the book “The Twelve Houses” by Howard Sasportas which has a chapter on each house as well as the planets in each house.

People with an accentuated 12th house are the “helpers” or “fixers” who takes on the needs and causes of others. You may feel driven by subconscious urges and may find that once you accomplish a goal, it may in fact not have the glow it once had and you continue your search. It can show psychic ability and is also the arena of our past lives – what we are “bringing over” from the past. It can be an “old soul” who is here is finish up old business before achieving karma. The twelfth house os the last house and is therefore the one that reaches to the heavens. There may be something universal that you need to accomplish and something that may require sacrifice. Read more about this house – I think it will give you greater insights into what motivates you.

Arlington, VA: Pluto retrograde - what's it mean to a Sag, and to everyone else? I've read that things will seem to calm down a lot and a time to re-evaluate and change directions without too much trouble before Pluto goes direct. Is this accurate? What else might one expect?

Charlene Lichtenstein: As a fellow Sagittarian I can tell you that when Pluto transits Sag, it means upheavals and transformation. When Pluto retrogrades it can mean a respite but it can also mean that transformations take you one step backward. It is a time to navigate particularly slowly and carefully.

Now, it all depends where your sun is located in your chart - in what degree and in what house. In my case (because I do not have your birth info), I have sun in sag in my 4th house (of ones home) at apx 7 degrees. Pluto is now at 19 degrees so the pressure of pluto has passed. (Of course, if pluto makes any aspects to other natal planets, the impact continues in different areas!). But when it hit my sun, I actually moved. It was unpredicatble and a heck of a lot of trouble but now that the dust has settled it is positive change. And that is pluto!

Washington, D.C.: Hi Charlene,

I've been single for a long time (two years), and I feel like something is holding me back from being open to dating. Interestingly enough, however, my ability to make new friends and sustain old friendships is better than ever! Do you have any insights on what might be keeping me out of the dating arena?

Capricorn, 1/8/77, Washington, D.C., 10:10 p.m.

Charlene Lichtenstein: Let's see - you have sun in cap, moon in leo and venus in pisces. Possibly virgo rising which places pisces on the cusp of your 7th house of relationships. You are quite a romantic although people wouldn't necessarily know this of you. You tend to romanticize love and lovers sometimes overlooking or glossing over their weaknesses. You can be a bit of an enabler too. Emotionally you are very demonstrative, not like he usual cap personality which can be reserved.

Currently Uranus the planet of shock and surprise is in your 7th house which may have given you a few rude surprises in the relationship arena. Perhaps this has made you a bit gun shy? I suspect when lucky Jupiter redirects on April 4, you will begin to feel a little luckier and more expansive about love relationships - it will conjunct your moon giving it a happy jolt. Maybe a secret admirer will not be a secret anymore? Early April is also a good time to get out there and become more involved in creative enterprises. Mars in Cap will catapult you into new arenas and possibly a new romance.

Bethesda, Md.: You have always been on the money before and I thank you! My question today is I have started a relationship with this guy and I want to know if this will be a long lasting one. I am Pisces, 3/13/49 born in Brooklyn, N.Y. at 12:17 p.m. He is Cancer, 7/11/50 born in Virginia and I don't know his time. He is not a typical Cancer -- he is totally different. Will this last and is it a good match?

Charlene Lichtenstein: Thank you!
You have sun and venus in pisces. Possibly gemini rising which places sagittarius on your 7th house cusp (relationships).

He has sun in cancer but moon (emotions) and venus (love) in gemini. You are correct - he is not a typical cancer - at least not emotionally or when he is in love.

You are basically a true romantic which is well aspect to his general personality. He likes closeness but may not express himself that way when he gets close. This may be a disconnect to others but you understand that. WIth sag on your 7th house cusp, you are seeking someone more friendly, honest and expansive. While venus in gemini may be a bit more flirty, he possesses a quick mind that speaks of love. You can connect with him on a mental level and with both of your sun signs in emotional water signs, it can go deeper.

But remember to keep his mind occupied - love notes and puzzles intrigue him.

Washington, D.C.: Hello Charlene! Thank you for taking the time to respond to my question.

I am currently a college senior at a crossroads in my life. I am studying music performance and international relations. I have many options to take up career wise in either field, but don't know which path to take. In addition to that, I am in a long distance relationship with a Taurus (Born May 15, 1980 in Karachi Pakistan), which puts an additional strain on me, in terms of knowing if I am able to uphold an extended long-distance relationship.

I was born on October 6, 1981 in Neptune N.J., at 10 p.m.

Thank you very much for your time!

Charlene Lichtenstein: You have sun in libra, moon in capricorn, mercury in scorpio, venus in scorpio and mars in leo. Possibly gemini rising which places pisces on the cusp of your 10th house of career. I would say that any professional path you decide to take needs to offer you a sense of spiritual fulfillment and some way to give back to others. Your work has to have meaning. It can be creative (like music) and certainly sun sign libra would guide you to creative outlets - libra is the sign of the arts. International relations can provide a bit of the service to theirs that you seek and a feeling of doing meaningful good deeds for the world. So I can see an good match for either path.

Mars in leo is a performer and certainly through music or diplomacy you can fill that need. The scorpio influence is a bit practical and you may want something strategic and powerful. WHile this seems to lead you to international studies, I bet you can influence others through music as well - it depends on how strong your musical ability is.

So either one sounds good to me.

As far as your taurus is concerned, his sun sign is certainly very compatible with your planets and his venus in cancer makes him romantic and emotional in love - a very good match for your passionate scorpio venus. Looks very good to me.

Dublin, Calif.: Life has been in quite a turmoil for the last few years, especially where finances are concerned. Is there anything promising in the near future and what can I do now to help things along? I was born in Hayward, Calif., on Jan. 31, 1952, 2:12 p.m. Thanks.

Charlene Lichtenstein: Okay - you have sun in aquarius, mercury in capricorn, venus in capricorn and mars in scorpio. Possibly gemini rising which places cancer on your 2nd house of finances.
You are generally very international in scope and can be somewhat unorthodox in your general personality. You are an individual. Yet with that mercury and venus in capricron there is a part of you that wants to belong to the group. You may feel that you do not measure up or may be afraid to express your opinions but as you get older, you get more and more confident. You are very smart but feel that you have to work doubly hard to prove yourself. You may also be afraid to take risks in love for fear of rejection but once you do jump, you will be caught!

Financially, you may have retrograding Jupiter in your 2nd house which can upend things. But Jupiter goes direct on April 4 so hold on until then and things may clear a path for you. Take things slowly, be prepared for happy surprises as Uranus trines your 2nd house. Uranus now sits in your 10th house of career so maybe you will have some ups and downs professionally, contributing to this turmoil. This may continue for a bit but you will soon learn to go with the flow and make it work for you.

New Orleans, La.: Hi! First time I've submitted a question but I've been lurking for years. I'm curious why I'm always drawn to Taurus men -- with almost identical birthdays. I'm a leo -- August 14, 1976; 7:40 p.m., Albuquerque, N.M. and from what I understand very typical. The men are always older - significantly -- but this current relationship is wonderful and I hope permanent. He was born 5/16/66 in Japan. I don't know what time. Can you shed some light for me?

Charlene Lichtenstein: Welcome! You know, I am in my fourth year doing this show and it continues to be great fun!

You have sun in leo, moon in aries and venus in virgo. Possibly pisces rising which places virgo on the cusp of your 7th house of relationships. You are generally very generous, theatrical and expansive. You also love attention and great confidence. You are robust emotionally and can be rather particular in love. You can also be somewhat earthy in love.

Your current love is sun in taurus but moon and venus in aries. He connects well to your general personality (sun sign) as well as your emotional nature (moon). He is a fireball full of energy and is very robust in love. High energy between the two of you and a very nice connection.

Both of you may demand some attention so you will have to learn to spread it around. Thankfully you both have solid earth signs in your charts os you both don't burn to a crisp. You both have good solid foundations and a practical streak.

I have noticed that many people are attracted to a specific set of signs. You say you tend to gravitate to taureans. This may be that you lacked fixed signs in your chart and seek someone to give you what you lack.

I hope this helps!

Fairfax, Va.: I am 3/17/1970 around 4 a.m. in Saigon, Vietnam
He is 10/31/1962 don't know time in Pennsylvania.

We were planning to get married however, he is having major cold feet. The wedding has been on again, off again for 3 months now. Should I walk away or should I wait?

Charlene Lichtenstein: Hmmm let's see.
You have sun in pisces, moon in cancer and venus in aries. You are generally very soft and romantic and cuddly but when you fall in love, you can be a bit of a pile driver! Venus in aries is strong and robust and pioneering. Very different from that foggy, fuzzy pisces sun and cuddly, motherly moon in cancer.

He has sun in scorpio, moon in sag and venus in scorpio. He can be very mysterious and passionate and below the surface. He can also be a bit jealous and possessive.

What he first found attractive in you was your emotional water sign sun and moon. As you two got more involved, he found your fiercely independent venus in aries. I would say that if you want to heat up his cold feet, you need to pull back a bit from your strong aries venus and let your pisces sun sign dictate your actions in the relationship. That may involve compromising how you behave in a relationship. You may have to be more emotional and romantic than you feel but it will connect more to his venus in scorpio.

I hope that is clear and that it helps you decide what to do.

Alexandria, Va.: I just discovered these chats; they are a fantastic source of information! I have recently been offered a position with a new company, and am completely on the fence with regards to whether I should take it. I am hoping that something in my chart will be an influence in my decision! I was born Aug. 8, 1976 at 10:06 a.m. in Richmond, Va. Any information you can give me will be very appreciated! Thank you!

Charlene Lichtenstein: Thank you.
I wish I knew more about what type of job it is but here goes -

You have sun in leo and mercury and mars in virgo. Possibly libra rising which places cancer on the he cusp of your 10th house of career. You are generally very generous, expansive and dramatic. Yet you can be very careful and precise how you communicate and how you take action. You are always there to pitch in and help out and need a bit of structure around you.

In your career, you may find that you are happiest in a small tight knit group of co-workers who are more like a family. You like to help others and need an emotional connection to what you do. It may involve history or geneology, maybe antiques or things having to do with homes or places of comfort or children.

Uranus, the planet of surprises is currently in your 6th house of the day to day job and I suspect that anything that you do on a day to day basis in work will undergo surprising changes over the next few years. The most important thing is to keep your eye on the long term career goal and don't be sidelined with putting out little fires.

By June Saturn will move into your 10th house sector so expect more challenges, harder work and learning a great deal more about what you need to do to advance. This will be a 3 year period of growth through hard and ultimately fulfilling work.

Please tell me more about the job offer and I'll see what else I can tell you.

Somewhere, Wash.: Hi, Charlene

I have some major changes to consider in the upcoming months. Can you tell me how any decisions made within the next few months will come out considering where my planets are situated?
DOB: 11-03-1943
1:09 a.m.
Brownsville, Tex.

Thanks for your time with us!

Charlene Lichtenstein: What areas do you expect to see changes? Or do you want me to tell you?

Well first off you are finishing off your 2nd saturn return so you may be reaping the rewards of three years of hard work. Read more about the return at www.TheStarryEye.com on the zodiascope page.

You have sun and mercury in scorpio, venus in virgo and mars in gemini. Possibly virgo rising which places volcanic and transforming pluto in your 4th house. Changes in home, family and that which makes you feel secure. You may move, have a different family structure, have your pipes at home spill over, change your perspectives on security etc. Pluto brings change where change is needed but it doesn't feel comfortable or controllable.

Depending on where and what your decisions impact (what areas of your life) the outcomes may be more predictable or controllable or less so.

Please resubmit your birth information with more details about some of your impending decisions and I can take a more detailed look.

Monterey, Calif.: My info: Born on. 4, 1964,at 2:10 p.m., Ft. Stewart, Ga. I'm a single mother of three boys, finally pulling my life together, despite the "bumps" in the road. The future is looking brighter career wise and financially, but I'm in a mild quandary about romance. He seems interested, but I've been bruised terribly and not certain if I'm picking up the right signals. His info: Oct. 30 1963, in Paris, France. Can two Scorpios build a lasting relationship? Thank you for any guidance you can give. God bless.

Charlene Lichtenstein: You are a sun scorpio with venus in libra. You strive for harmony in love and may be attracted to physically attractive men.

He is sun scorpio with venus in scorpio - intense, jealous and passionate in love. You may come off as a bit flirty to him and he needs to feel that he can trust you implicitly.
He can be secretive (more than you) and needs to learn to trust.

You have virgo on the cusp of your 7th house of relationships so you seek someone solid and trustworthy who will be there for you through thick and thin. Pluto is squaring that sector now so you may have some transformations and volcanic change in that area of your life. Wait until pluto redirects in September to get your bearings and keep in mind his venus in scorpio needs to feel loyalty and trust.

It can certainly work but you need great patience with him.

Charlene Lichtenstein: We have run out of time! Thank you all for your great questions. For those who I couldn't get to tonight, please try again next week - March 31st at 6p.

Until then, happy stargazing!
