She returned to New York in 1974 and has lived in Greenwich Village ever since, dispensing advice whether requested or not.
Lichtenstein's monthly and weekly astrology columns are carried in newspapers across the country. When not writing or working on her Web site, AccessNewAge.com/zscope, Lichtenstein offers private consultation. She is a member of the National Council of Geocosmic Research and often lectures on both astrology and tarot.

Charlene Lichtenstein: Welcome to Starry Eye Astrology. I’m Charlene Lichtenstein, the washingtonpost.com celestial seer, ready to answer your questions and engage everyone in a lively discussion about astrology and the new age. My Web sites are www.AccessNewAge.com/ and www.TheStarryEye.com
Starbite of the week:
NetRatings reports that the New Year also brings surfers online to get a view of what's to come in 2003. The top two astrology sites attracted more than a million unique visitors from home for the week ending December 29. iVillage Astrology attracted a unique audience of 754,000, while MSN Astrology garnered 689,000 surfers in the same week. Yahoo! Astrology claimed the No. 3 spot with 377,000 visitors.
And now let’s hear what you have to say. Please include your birth date, time and place for all astrology questions. And, if you have any feedback on some of my past answers, please send them along!
There are some great questions tonight!
Baltimore, Md.: Come on, and face the tough questions: There is absolutely zero scientific proof -- none -- that where some stars and planets are in the sky, which are really determined by often-random astronomical and cosmic occurrences that are under anybody's control or destiny, has anything to do with someone's fortune. In fact, scientists have routinely debunked goof ball astrology for the superstitious nonsense that it is.
Charlene Lichtenstein: You know, when I first started this program four years ago, I received a steady stream of dis-believing queries. And I pretty much answered them all. And then they stopped, either from fatigue or from convincing. Fact is, there is a great deal of credibility with astrology because, frankly, it works. There are many psychiatrists who cast their patients charts to help them diagnose. It is not for predicting as much as it is for guidance. Carl Jung became a big proponent as did Gauliquin (a mathematician who started out by trying to debunk astrology and began to see that there were statistical accuracies that were just too accurate to miss).
Unfortunately astrology suffers from a bad rep but for those who have found the right astrologer, is will prove to be invaluable. I think it was JP Morgan who said “Millionaires don’t use astrology, billionaires use astrology”.
PS The three Magi were astrologers.
Attention Posters!: I just wanted to say that Charlene's reading for me a couple of months ago was right on the money! I moved into a new house last week and it was disastrous, but not surprising. Charlene let me know a couple of months ago that things would not go smoothly, and they didn't.
Listen to her advice -- she's right!
Charlene Lichtenstein: Thanks! You see that it can really help to know what the stars say.
Washington, D.C.: Hello! I'm still hopeful you'll be able to answer my question about whether relocating from Washington, D.C. to Miami, Fla. in the spring would be positive or negative for me. I'm a Leo, 8/11/65 -- you told me a few weeks ago -- you would prepare a relocation chart -- and just wanted me to remind you! Thanks very much!
Charlene Lichtenstein: Yes - thanks! And I realized after the show that I need you time and place of birth. I am so sorry that I could not contact you. Please resubmit with all that extra information and I will have it in time for next weeks show.
Hagerstown, Md.: PLease help me Charlene. I am obsessed with my ex-boyfriend. We were together for 1.5 years and then he moved to live with his dad in Indiana. We didn't last long after that, although he was three hours away to begin with. Well he came home to visit family a few weeks ago and I told him I still loved him and he kind of brushed me off, but then spent time with me! I am a busy person so I only dwell on this occasionally, but I need to know if it's futile or not ... I am young, and he is younger so I know it's probably all in vain, but please tell me something if you can. My birthday is 8/26/79 around 11:21 p.m. in Fort Lewis, Wash. and he is 8/28/81 in Lewiston, W.Va. HHHHHHHHHHEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLPPPPPP!!!!
Charlene Lichtenstein: Hmmm. well you have sun in virgo, moon in libra, mercury in leo, venus in virgo and mars in cancer. You are careful, precise and there for those who need you. You have an even tempered way of displaying your emotions and can be very charismatic there. You tend to be picky in love (why not?) and can also be a bit earthy with the right partner. You act and react emotionally tending to act with your heart and not your head.
He has sun in virgo (you two basically understand each other), moon in leo -- he needs loads of attention, emotionally. Needs to feel adored. Venus in Libra -- connects to your emotional composition. But can be flirtatious and seeks harmony in a relationship. May try to avoid confrontation and be diplomatic.
There is connection between the two of you but eventually you will need someone more reliable who can give you substantive emotional support. I am not sure he has that.
Currently you have transforming pluto in your relationship area. I sense that the next few years will be a time of change and transformation for you. A long journey that will result in rewards. Hang in there!
Washington, D.C.: I have a question that maybe you can help me out with. Sydney Omarr, former Washington Post horoscope writer, died on Jan 2 2003. He wrote the horoscopes until March 22, at which point Jeraldine Saunders has taken over for him. I really used to look forward to the daily horoscope when Sydney wrote them. They really resonated with me and were pretty poignant. I don't mean to be condescending, but Jeraldine Saunders' horoscopes just seem to be coming out of left field. I was wondering if you knew about her credentials. Is she a novice? Is there hope for more accuracy in the future? What's your opinion, Charlene?
Charlene Lichtenstein: I do not know much about Ms. Saunders except to say that she apprenticed with Mr. Omarr until his death. Maybe you can write to her and she can tell you how she analyzes the planets and whether she does it differently from Mr. Omarr.
I can tell you that writing a daily scope is a very tough job!!
Gaithersburg, Md.: I was born in Washington, D.C. on July 5, 1955, at 11:37 a.m. I have always wanted to make my living as a fiction writer and poet. So far I have had a short story and a lot of poetry published, but I have never been paid for any of it. I love to write and not being paid for it hasn't changed how much or often I write, but will I in this lifetime yet make my living as a writer of fiction and poetry?
Charlene Lichtenstein: Well let's see -- you have sun in cancer, moon in capricorn, mercury in gemini and mars in cancer. Possibly libra rising which places cancer on the top of your chart in the career sector.
You are basically very sensitive and caring. You may question your emotions and hold back for fear of rejection or embarrassment. I think writing provides you with a shield that will enable you to express your emotions without face to face risk. SO that is interesting.
Also, with mercury in gemini you express ideas fluidly, you are clever, witty and intelligent. Very expressive especially through writing. So far so good.
With cancer on the top of your chart, I suggest a career that enables you to work from home or in a small family group. One where you can connect to others, provide relief and comfort and touch people emotionally. Cancer is also moodiness so there should be a certain leemnet of "mood" to what you do.
Will it pay off? Well Saturn, the planet of hard work is edging into your 10th house in June so I see hard work, not much immediate payoff but if you work very hard, it will eventually have its rewards. Would I prefer to see Jupiter, the planet of luck and expansion there? Sure. But Saturn provides rewards for hard work so I would say, payoff is possible but you will work for it.
Charlottesville, Va.: Ms. Lichtenstein, I'm curious to see if my relationship will last. My birth date is 3/4/74, time 1:34 a.m., place Raleigh, N.C. The birth date of my beau is 1/25/71. We've been together 8 months. Thanks!
Charlene Lichtenstein: Curious to know why you are asking ...
You are in the middle of your Saturn Return and you were probably in your return when you started this relationship/ The return is a 3 year period form approximately ages 27-30 where we may feel frustrated and stressed. Read more at on the Zodiascope page.
They say that some things that we begin during a return will not last because we are in such a state of change. Of course never say never but keep it in mind especially over the next year.
You have sun in pisces, moon in cancer and venus in aquarius. You appear to be very emotional and needy but when you are in love, you can be quite independent.
He has sun in aquarius moon in cap and venus in sag. You two connect in love -- you understand each other. And you give him emotional confidence with your watery sun and moon. Definitely a good connection here.
I think that you will be the one to decide the fate of this relationship.
Washington, D.C.: I posted my question about my confusing love situation last week, and would LOVE if you would answer it today ... I need help!
(Reminder: Me: August 16, 1978, Danbury Conn.)
Charlene Lichtenstein: Let's see, you have sun in leo, moon in cap and venus in libra. You are basically a very proud and generous person who loves the limelight and likes to be appreciated. But with that serious moon in cap, you may have trouble expressing your true emotions for fear of rejection or embarrassment. Venusi and libra folks are very charismatic and attracted to attractive people. They may be less emotional and more sociable. More flirty than passionate.
Does that help?
Gaithersburg, Md.: I just turned 30, and feel like I need to focus my energy on my love life, my career and my finances. I just need some guidance for how much I should focus where!
I am a Pisces, 3/9/1973, 7:16 p.m., Washington, D.C.
Charlene Lichtenstein: So you have just finished your Saturn Return! Congratulations. This is now the time to reap the rewards of all your hard work of the past three years.
You have sun, mercury and venus in pisces, moon in taurus and mars in cap. Very intuitive, very romantic and a softie. You are very loyal emotionally and may be afraid of taking action for fear of failure. But as you get older, you learn to overcome this fear. Possibly libra rising which places saturn in your 9th house of higher ed and philosophy. You need to expand your big picture.
WIth pluto in sag squaring all those pisces planets, you may find yourself concentrating on work issues. There may be some surprises there (uranus in your 6th).
Mars is currently in your 4th house of your home so initially you may be active in home or family related issues but ultimately, the lure will be in career (and therefore finances) for the time being. In my opinion.
Washington, D.C.: I'm back with time and place of birth for relocation from Washington, D.C. to Miami, Florida in the spring question. Positive? Negative? Born 8/11/65, in Franklin, Pa., 4:30 p.m. Thanks!
Charlene Lichtenstein: That is great -- thanks. Please check in next week and I PROMISE to have your relocation chart done.
Gaithersburg, Md.: Born July 5, 1955, in Washington, D.C. at 11:37 a.m. Never in a situation like this one has my question been answered live on line. I do not need a resounding "YES!" to my question to be happy. And you are so on the mark with what you said about having a job at home! I am working hard to achieve that, too. Two layoffs in one year and my own computer equipment keep me at it. Thanks.
Charlene Lichtenstein: Please keep in touch and let me know how you are doing. As a freelance writer too (horoscopes) I know how tough it can be, but also very fulfilling!
Las Vegas, Nev.: Romance, of course!
Is there any chance I may be getting re-married any time in the not-so-distant future?
I've been "dating" a married man for a couple of years and am wondering if I need to give up on him. We were close before his marriage and have remained close since, so close that I didn't even realize he had gotten married in August of 2001. He finally told me the truth in July of 2002. He's a physician which is how he gets away with this.
Please let me know what you think.
Thank you so much!
Charlene Lichtenstein: I need yours and his birth information -- birth date, time and place. Please re-send.
Arlington, Va.: Madame! Help me celebrate my birthday tomorrow! I was born 4/1/61 at 6:14 pm in NYC. What's in the stars for me in terms of romance, career, etc.? Thanks!
Charlene Lichtenstein: Happy birthday!
You have sun in aries, mercury in pisces, venus in aries and mars in cancer. Possibly libra rising.
Basically you are a robust, courageous and pioneering person who knows your own mind. You tend to express yourself emotionally which is interesting considering how strong your overall persona is. You are strong in love -- you see who you want and go after them. No coy games here ... And yet, when you take action, you take it based on emotions rather than logic. An interesting make-up.
The next year should bring more work in your career as Saturn moves into your 10th house in June. Struggles but the possibility of rewards after all that hard work. Luck in friendships and large groups -- join a few clubs and get involved. (Jupiter in the 11th house). Your communications will continue to have a tendency to change the landscape - pluto remains in your 3rd house of communication. Watch what you say.
Early in spring through early summer -- possible love connection as the sun moves into your 8th house of sex and venus into your 7th house of relationships.
Suggestion for next year -- Every year on our birthday we have a "solar return". They say that by travelling on our birthday we can adjust our chart for the year and some who may want to improve their finances or love will travel and place stronger planets in those sectors.
NE, USA: DOB 07/10/1969, 10:15 pm. -- Hi Charlene, I just sold my home yesterday and am headed north to be closer to my family. I have a sister pretty badly disabled rather recently and want to help her any way that I can ... Closing date for house is set for 5/12 while Merc. retrogrades. Should I change it? Do you see good stuff for me with regard to move? It involved BIG changes, new job, home, and hopefully an improvement for my sister and my love life too for that matter ...?! Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
Charlene Lichtenstein: You know, I would try to change the closing until after the shadow of the retrograde (not just when the retrograde is over but until mercury crosses over the initial angle). That would be around June 6/7. That will also clear away from the two eclipses that month too. You definitely do NOT want to close during an eclipse. I have a short article on eclipses at www.TheStarryEye.com on the Zodiascope page.
Retrogrades are not dire - just annoying. Eclipses are a bit foggy and we can become disappointed.
As far as the move, let me run a relocation chart for you. I will need your place of birth tonight. Then, please resubmit for next weeks show and I will have an assessment for you then.
Closing out Quarter Century -- : Hello Charlene,
My 25th birthday is on Sat. and I would like to ask you how this year is looking for me overall? I recently had my heart broken, so romance is something I am looking forward to. 4/5/78 3 p.m. in Silver Spring, Md..
Thank you in advance if you get to my birthday question!
Charlene Lichtenstein: Happy birthday!
you have sun in aries, mercury in aries, venus in taurus and mars in cancer. You are robust and pioneering and confident in general and in the way you communicate. You are loyal and earthy in love and tend to act with your heart and not your head. Possibly leo or virgo rising.
Expect continued surprises in the next year as Uranus (planet of surprises) sits in your 7th and 8th house of relationships and intimacy. Things may ignite.
Also mars, the planet of action is transiting your 5th house of fun. I would say this is a great time to get out there and have fun -- attend parties or take a creative class. Go to shousehing fun or artistic. You never know who you will meet -- the 5th house is also the sector for romance! Mars moves on by the end of April so don't waste time!
New York, N.Y.: Dear Charlene:
What do you see happening? I have a Uranus transit in trine aspect to my natal Moon at 1 degree Cancer. That's good, right? But my Moon is square to Uranus in my natal chart. Will the natal square be triggered in a negative way? Please help me make sense of this. D.O.B. August 8th, 1969, 10:30 p.m., New York, 20 degrees Aries rising.
Charlene Lichtenstein: Well that means all this is happening in your 3rd house of communication (where your moon sits) as Uranus transits your 12th house of hidden things.
So I say that you may be prompted ... sparked (uranus) to say things that are emotionally driven (moon) that may cause unexpected things to happen (uranus and the 12th house). Secrets may be spilled and hidden enemies may be uncovered.
Your natal placement may indicate that you innately may have emotional surprises in relationships (7th house placement or in your job (if it is in the he 6th house) Does that make sense to you? I think that after a while you may learn how to handle this energy.
Crofton, Md.: Dear Charlene:
What is the "love match" between the following people? I'm the Scorpio seeking to understand my new relationship. Thank you for a great Live Online column!
Me: 11/10/67, 8:30 a.m., Maryland
Him: 5/14/65, 6:00 a.m., Maryland
Charlene Lichtenstein: You have sun in scorpio and venus in libra. Possibly sag rising which places gemini on the cusp of your 7th house of relationships. You are basically intense and passionate and perhaps a bit secretive. But when you are in love you are a bit of an open book -- charming, charismatic and flirty. You are also attracted to attractive people.
He has sun in taurus, moon in scorpio and venus in gemini. He is loyal and a bit stubborn and loves good food and comforts. He can be a bit secretive himself especially when it comes to his emotions. Yet when he is in love, he too can be flirty and needs a meeting of the minds before he is really hooked!
So you two have great compatibility -- you understand each other in love (venuses in sync) and your basic personalities are well matched too. Lots of physical attraction!
I see great potential here.
Fairfax, Va. Hi, Charlene ...
Would you tell us about your own natal chart, please? It must be fascinating!
Charlene Lichtenstein: Oops we have run out of time! Ha ha.
Well we really have run out of time but I am a sun sign sagittarius (big mouth) with leo rising (love the limelight) moon in aquarius (unorthodox way of expressing emotions) and venus in scorpio (but very passionate when I am in love). More next time ...
So thank you all for your great questions! Tune in next week - April 7 at 6p for another edition of The Starry Eye.
Until then, happy stargazing!
