Question:
Why should the voters elect you? (1994)
Answer:
My record stands for itself. I have consistently:
• represented the interests of the Up-County;
• held the line on taxes;
• supported public safety, adding more officers;
• ensured quality in our classrooms; and
• worked to preserve our neighborhoods.
Question:
What issue inspired you to run for council and how would your presence on the council make a difference? (1990)
Answer:
Fifteen years of community leadership in school, civic, environmental and recreation issues left me frustrated at the lack of response to citizens' interests on the part of the county government. It was clear that special-interest groups were dominating the actions of elected officials. I have been an effective countywide and local leader and a coalition builder. I have worked with many agencies and departments of the county government and with the state legislature and have considerable knowledge of the governmental process. I also know the citizens and neighborhoods of the county. My reputation for hard work and being willing to listen is well known. I am tied to no special-interest group and can listen and act as an independent voice on the council. I would bring balance, experience, intelligence and openness to the council.
