Welcome to another in an occasional series showing off local communities. The Washington metropolitan area has much more to offer than just the Smithsonian. But too many of us never take the time to explore it.

Maybe you live in Silver Spring and have never visited the antique shops in Fredericksburg. Maybe you live in Upper Marlboro and have never made it down to the jazz clubs of Old Town Alexandria. WashingtonPost.com's Washington World will take you there!

Here are some pointers on what to see the next time you want to get away -- but not too far away.

Introducing Your Virtual Host
For this visit, we go to Maryland's largest city, Baltimore. There is, of course, more to Baltimore than Camden Yards or the Inner Harbor. But if you're like me, you don't know the neighborhoods that well or don't know where to go for great food besides the restaurants by the waterfront.

Meet Our Virtual Tour Guide
Carol Bowers, a Washington World correspondent and native of Baltimore, is our virtual tour host. Carol knows the pubs, the quirky neighborhoods and some of the oddball characters.
