The Anacostia River has been nominated as an American Heritage River by a committee of officials from the District, Prince George's County, Montgomery County, Maryland and federal governments.

The nominating documentation from the Anacostia Watershed Restoration Committee included more than 120 letters of support from government officials, nonprofit environmental and civic organizations, business groups and individuals. The Potomac River also has been nominated. The Clinton administration is expected to select 10 rivers for the designation next year.

A regional campaign is underway to restore the Anacostia, sometimes called "the forgotten river" in relation to the better-known Potomac.
