Maryland will send eight representatives to the 106th Congress for a two-year term. The boundaries of the congressional districts are determined by the state legislature. Seven of them are in or near the Washington region. Both Republican and Democratic candidates will be on the ballots in all those districts. The challengers face well-entrenched incumbents.

I know their needs and aspirations: assuring quality health care for all, preserving social security, protecting our environment, safeguarding our homes, streets and schools from violence, supporting our civil servants and promoting the economic vitality of Montgomery County. I am an effective leader in women's health, child-care, older Americans and science and technology issues."

"As a young man, I was paralyzed by a disease called French polio. The experience left me with an abiding concern for those unable to share fully in the American Dream. After I completely recovered from my paralysis, I fought successfully for passage of the Americans With Disabilities Act, for strengthening the law giving girls and women equal opportunities in education and sports, and for strengthening our civil rights laws. As Montgomery County's congressman, I will continue to fight for economic and social justice for all, for quality public education and for accessible and affordable health care for every American."

"I am a teacher and a volunteer. My wife, Katy, an Easter Seals executive, shares my commitment to family, community and Montgomery County's quality of life."
