THE CANDIDATES

Barbara Ann Mikulski*
Democrat
Age: 62
Residence: Baltimore.
  Married: No.
Children: No.
Education: Institute of Notre Dame; BA, Mount Saint Agnes College; Masters of Social Work, University of Maryland School of Social Work.
  Barbara Ann Mikulski*

Occupation/Employer: U.S. senator.

Elected Offices and Civic Activities: Baltimore City Council, U.S. House of Representatives, U.S. Senate.

Why should voters elect you?
"I've been a fighter for Maryland all my life, from the City Council to the Senate. I work hard to make sure policies reflect our values-maintaining a robust economy, securing a senior safety net, getting behind our kids and teachers, fighting for safe streets and a safe world, and investing in science and technology. But there is more to do. I want to keep fighting-for the people in the urban and suburban communities of Baltimore and southern Maryland, the western mountains, and the Eastern Shore. I want to keep fighting for all the communities of Maryland."

What do you want voters to know about you?
"I'm wild about Maryland crabs. My crab cake recipe is on my Senate web site-just shows that tradition and hi-tech can be terrific together!"

Ross Z. Pierpont
Republican
Age: 81
Residence: Timonium, Baltimore County.
  Married: Yes.
Children: One.
Education: BS, pharmacy, University of Maryland; MD, University of Maryland.
  Ross Z. Pierpont

Occupation/Employer: Health care consultant, CEO, PCSI International; CEO, Gempro International.

Elected Offices and Civic Activities: Central Committee; 3rd District chairman; Board of Review of Health of Maryland; Comprehensive Health Planning; Board of Hospital Licensure; Fee Schedule-Armed Forces Dependents; Kiwanis Club; Presidents Club and Health Council, Heritage Foundation; chairman of Advisory Board, Republican National Committee.

Why should voters elect you?
"Ross Pierpont should be elected to replace Senator Mikulski, who promotes divisive policies which undermine our social structure and waste billions of dollars. Example: our failing health care system. Years ago, I warned health plans supported by Mikulski could never deliver what they promised, would undermine health care, and waste billions. Mikulski was on the wrong side in health care as in other policies she promotes. The Pierpont Healthcare Program covers everyone-that's everyone!-cradle to grave with freedom of choice while saving $500 billion every year. For a forward-looking agenda including health care for everyone, put Mikulski out, put Pierpont in."

What do you want voters to know about you?
"Pierpont Health Plan will give total access, cradle to grave care, and save $500 billion a year. Favor right to work, lower taxes."

Web site: None.
Email: None.

The Voters' Guide was compiled from staff reporting and information provided by the candidates in response to questionnaires from The Washington Post.
