THE CANDIDATES

Roy P. Dyson*
Democrat
Age: 49
Residence: Great Mills.
  Married: No.
Children: None.
Education: Montgomery Junior College; University of Baltimore; University of Maryland.
  Roy P. Dyson*

Occupation/Employer: State senator.

Elected Offices and Civic Activities: Senate; U.S. House of Representatives; Maryland House of Delegates; Knights of Columbus; Elks and Moose lodges; Fraternal Order of Police; Maryland Farm Bureau; Governor's Solid Waste Management Task Force.

Why should voters elect you?
"Because I will effectively represent the citizens of St. Mary's and Calvert County, rather than representing special interest groups and lobbyists. As our counties face unprecedented growth and change, we need a strong advocate for our region in the state legislature. Three issues are particularly important: getting a handle on growth in order to ensure that our schools and infrastructure are not overburdened by change, making the St. Mary's and Calvert County school systems the best in the state, and protecting our fragile environment in Southern Maryland. My track record shows I can do this in Annapolis."

What do you want voters to know about you?
"I have represented citizens of Southern Maryland for over 20 years. My voting record and accomplishments demonstrate that I am hard-working, dedicated, and effective."

Culver Sprogle Ladd
Republican
Age: 68
Residence: Lusby.
  Married: No.
Children: No answer provided.
Education: BS, University of Maryland; MA and PhD, American University.
  Culver Sprogle Ladd

Occupation/Employer: Teacher, Woodrow Wilson Senior High School in the District.

Elected Offices and Civic Activities: Former Young Republican National Committeeman in Washington; Middle States Council for the Social Studies; National Capital Area Political Science Association; National Council of Teachers of Mathematics; Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association.

Why should voters elect you?
"My deepest commitment goes to education-and public schools are the critical difference between America and the rest of the developed world. Developing nations need to look closely at the American system of education to see what helps structure the base for economic development. We in Calvert County have a fine educational system, and we need to maintain it and strengthen aspects of education, as in adult literacy and expanded higher educational opportunities. Because expanded education leads directly into expanded economic development, it follows that I am very much in favor of a growth in high-tech development in the Solomons-Lusby area."

What do you want voters to know about you?
"I am a fifth-generation Marylander, whose grandmother Rizpah Welch Sprogle was born in Annapolis in a family that originated in Philadelphia in the late 17th century."

Web site: None.
Email: None.

The Voters' Guide was compiled from staff reporting and information provided by the candidates in response to questionnaires from The Washington Post.
