How do I register my child for school?

Go to the school nearest you. Bring proof of residency, a Social Security card, the child's birth certificate, and immunization and physical examination records. You can call the public information line at 703-824-6635 to find out the name of the school serving you and to receive more enrollment information.

School officials urge parents to register their children as soon as they move into the area. Parents can register their children at their local school between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. School offices are closed in July. School officials also have an annual kindergarten registration drive in April.

Virginia law requires children who are 5 years old on or before Sept. 30 to be enrolled in kindergarten unless a parent or guardian notifies the assistant superintendent for Pupil Personnel Services.

Children who are 6 years old on or before Sept. 30 must attend school under Virginia law. Full-day kindergarten classes are the regular program of the Alexandria Schools.

When do report cards come out?

Report cards come out four times a year. Call the school system's public information line at 703-824-6635 for more information.

When are vacations for the 1997-'98 school year?
The 1997-'98 school calendar is as follows:

Sept. 2: First day of school.

Oct. 13: Columbus Day holiday.

Nov. 10: Schools closed for professional activities for teachers.

Nov. 11: Schools closed for professional activities for teachers.

Nov. 20-21: Schools close early for parent conferences.

Nov. 27-28: Thanksgiving holiday.

Dec. 22-Jan. 2: Winter break.

Jan. 19: Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

Jan. 30: Schools closed for professional activities for teachers.

Feb. 5-6: High schools close early for parent conferences.

Feb. 12-13: Elementary and middle schools close early for parent conferences.

Feb. 16: Presidents' Day holiday.

April 3: Schools closed for professional activities for teachers.

April 6-10: Spring break.

April 13: Spring holiday (or snow makeup day).

May 22: Holiday (or snow makeup day).

May 25: Memorial Day holiday.

June 17: Last day of school.
