How do I register my child for school?

Take your child to the school that he or she will be attending. Take along a birth certificate, proof of address and records of immunizations and physical exam. To find out which school your child will be attending, you can call Transfer and Out of Boundary services, at 202-724-2066. Your child must be enrolled in school if he or she turns 5 by Dec. 31 of that calendar year.

When are vacations?

For school year 1998-'99, school starts on Sept. 1. * Aug. 27: First day of school for teachers.

* Sept. 1: First day of school for students.

* Sept. 7: Labor Day holiday.

* Oct. 12: Columbus Day holiday.

* Nov. 6: Teachers' staff development; students not in school.

* Nov. 11: Veterans Day holiday.

* Nov. 26-27: Thanksgiving holiday.

* Dec. 24-Jan. 1: Winter vacation.

* Jan. 18: Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

* Jan. 27: Teachers' staff development; students not in school.

* Feb. 5: Parent/teacher conferences; students not in school.

* Feb. 15: Presidents' Day holiday.

* March 29-April 5: Spring vacation.

* April 14: Teachers' staff development; students not in school.

* May 31: Memorial Day holiday.

* June 18: Last day of school for students.

* June 21: Last day of school for teachers.

Who are the school officials, and when do they meet?

The school system is run through the Emergency Transitional Education Board of Trustees:

The board of trustees is a panel appointed by the D.C. financial control board to help oversee management of the public school system through June 30, 2000. The trustees meet every other Wednesday at school headquarters, which is moving this fall to 825 N. Capitol St. NE. There must be at least a 24-hour public notice before each meeting.

The elected school board retains the power to create and monitor public charter schools. Members also are supposed to advise the trustees and convey the views of their constituents. Members meet on the third Wednesday of each month at school headquarters, 825 N. Capitol St. NE. Elections for some members of the board are being held in November. Mary Bunn is the acting executive secretary.

PUBLIC CHARTER SCHOOL BOARD

The board was created by congressional legislation in 1996 so the District would have more than one board with the power to charter schools. Its members are appointed by the mayor. Like the elected school board, it has the authority to issue applications and grant charters to individuals or groups seeking to start public charter schools and to monitor those schools. The board is located at 1717 K St. NW, Suite 802.
