Gilmore Gets Funding Boost From National GOP GroupsBy Spencer S. HsuWashington Post Staff Writer Thursday, October 16, 1997; Page D08 RICHMOND, Oct. 15—Boosted by an unprecedented infusion of cash from national GOP organizations, Republican James S. Gilmore III raised more than twice as much money as Democrat Donald S. Beyer Jr. in September, according to reports filed today by Virginia's candidates for governor. Gilmore, the former state attorney general, received $1.5 million during the month, double the $733,235 raised by Beyer, Virginia's two-term lieutenant governor. Gilmore received $400,000 from the national Republican Congressional Campaign Committee and the National Republican Senatorial Committee, bringing his total raised from national GOP committees to $1.1 million. The GOP totals outpaced by 8 to 1 what Democratic national committees have sent to Beyer's campaign. The Democratic Governors Association and Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee have given Beyer a total of $135,000. For the entire campaign, Gilmore, 48, has raised $7.2 million; he had $1.1 million at the end of September. Beyer, 47, has raised $6.6 million and had $426,463 at the end of last month. The $13.8 million total brought in by both candidates has broken the state's previous fund-raising record for a general election for governor. © Copyright 1997 The Washington Post Company
