Years ago, when I called the branch of Chadwick's in Friendship Heights to ask whether it offered a Saturday hamburger special, I was told, "We have hamburgers, and they are special." It's still true. These burgers are thick and juicy, carefully handled and cooked as rare as requested, striped with grill marks and stacked on a very good golden, chewy, sesame-seed bun with lettuce, tomato, red onion and a dill pickle. In fact, they are one of the best burgers in town, regardless of price. The fries are limp and boring, but plentiful. And the rest of the pub fare tends to be well priced, decently cooked and served with breezy good cheer. Chadwick's in Georgetown, with its dark old wood and homey service, is worth remembering when you've been walking on the canal or strolling at Washington Harbour and want a quiet retreat from the crowds - or don't want to pay harborside prices. The other branches are appreciated by families, since children are treated like valued customers and their parents have learned to count on efficient service.
