The place has an aura. That means the wood paneling has grown glossy and brown through the years, the dark wood tables are worn so that your elbows almost feel cradled, and the etched and stained-glass windows look as if they should have cracks (which they do). The Dubliner is an old Irish pub, casual and easygoing, with food that's easy to define: mediocre. This is a restaurant for the I-don't-need-a-power-lunch crowd.
The Auld Dubliner Amber Ale is a big draw. While the low prices and highly appealing atmosphere are components for a winning formula, there has to be more reason for lines to form at lunch. It's gotta be the beer. The barley mushroom soup tastes like an experiment in suspending grains in a salt solution, and the lamb is chewy enough to serve as your exercise for the day. The vegetables are tasteless, and the coffee is worse.
What to order? Burgers and grilled chicken sandwiches are probably the safest bets. Look for a cold plate special of roast duck salad with arborio rice atop a Caesar salad and surrounded by fresh fruit. It's a sleeper, utterly delicious.
