Walking through markets makes me hungry, and Market Lunch serves just what a stroll through Eastern Market makes me crave. At breakfast time it has ham and eggs and grits and pancakes. At lunch it serves two grades of crab cakes - a good, spicy, shredded crab version and a better all-lump luxury version - along with fried fish and shrimp. Here's one of the rare opportunities to order fried perch - small fish having fallen out of favor these days - and fried shrimp that's hand-breaded and long on flavor.
In season you'll find soft-shell crabs and corn on the cob, while year-round there's terrific creamy potato salad and slaw, and decently tangy cucumber salad. But all is not seafood here. Market Lunch is one of the best in-town sources for authentic, North Carolina barbecue, smoky and vinegary, piled thickly on a huge soft bun with a layer of cole slaw. It's strong, sloppy and wonderful.
Service is friendly, but the lines run long, so you're expected to rattle off your order without hesitation, eat quickly at one of the tables or counters and relinquish your seat for the next customer. Market Lunch isn't for lingering. It's for a quick hit of old-time atmosphere and down-home food.
