Hamburgers just won't do when you've got a craving for an old-fashioned chopped steak. That's when you've got to go to Sholl's, the enduring cafeteria where the juicy little chopped steak is my favorite entree. There's more that draws me back, though, from the 50-cent cucumber-sour cream salad to the freshly cooked vegetables - firm broccoli, meltingly soft cabbage, well-browned french fries and corn on the cob in season. The mashed potatoes, however, taste as though they're from a box.
But the puddings don't, and they include rice with raisins, baked custard and occasionally tapioca. The pies have fresh fruit spilling out of them, and the doughnuts, biscuits and rolls are made in-house. Some of the salads look tired, and much of the food is overcooked, but if you use your eyes and trust your instincts, you'll generally eat well. This is the plainest food imaginable, at prices that couldn't be lower. Thus the unadorned beige dining room is a second home to locals both marginal and mainstream, as well as busloads of teen-age tourists. Their guides know that Sholl's is invaluable as a source for healthy, well-balanced, seasonal meals at fast-food prices.
