2006 Proposals

Mayor Anthony A. Williams has submitted to the D.C. Council a $4.9 billion budget that includes nearly $100 million in tax relief and more than $500 million for new programs and construction projects. The mayor's major initiatives include:

Description
New Communities $55.4 million Would pay for new housing and city services in nine neighborhoods that have high rates of poverty, unemployment and crime.
Way-to-Work $20.4 million Would provide job training to the chronically unemployed and summer jobs to young people who stay in school while requiring city contractors to pay workers a "living wage."
Great Streets $41.8 million Would pay for improvements and economic development along seven corridors in the city, including Georgia Avenue NW and Pennsylvania Avenue SE.
Washington Traffic Relief $20 million Would reconfigure and renovate bridges along the Anacostia River, improving access and easing congestion.
Tax Relief $94 million Would provide property tax relief and cut income taxes, with specific benefits for the poor and the disabled.
Pay-Go Capital Projects $199 million Would use cash reserves to build and renovate libraries, recreation centers, police stations and other public buildings across the city.
