2006 Proposals
Mayor Anthony A. Williams has submitted to the D.C. Council a $4.9 billion budget that includes nearly $100 million in tax relief and more than $500 million for new programs and construction projects. The mayor's major initiatives include:

| Way-to-Work | $20.4 million | Would provide job training to the chronically unemployed and summer jobs to young people who stay in school while requiring city contractors to pay workers a "living wage." |
| Great Streets | $41.8 million | Would pay for improvements and economic development along seven corridors in the city, including Georgia Avenue NW and Pennsylvania Avenue SE. |
| Washington Traffic Relief | $20 million | Would reconfigure and renovate bridges along the Anacostia River, improving access and easing congestion. |
| Tax Relief | $94 million | Would provide property tax relief and cut income taxes, with specific benefits for the poor and the disabled. |
| Pay-Go Capital Projects | $199 million | Would use cash reserves to build and renovate libraries, recreation centers, police stations and other public buildings across the city. |
