Opened: Nov. 19, 1962, at a cost of $108.3 million.
Named: For John Foster Dulles, secretary of state under President Dwight D. Eisenhower from 1953 to 1959.
Size: Built on 10,000 acres in Loudoun and Fairfax counties, approximately 26 miles and 30 minutes from downtown Washington. In 1999, an additional 1,000 acres were acquired.
Airlines: 15 major domestic airlines, eight regional airlines and 20 major international airlines.
Passengers: 22.9 million in 2004.
Takeoffs and landings: 470,000 in 2004.
Main terminal: 1,240 feet long; 1.1 million square feet.
International Arrivals Building: Opened in 1991; serves up to 2,400 passengers an hour.
Mobile lounges (19) and Plane Mates(30) : Transport passengers between the main terminal and the concourses and to planes parked on the jet apron a half-mile away.
Runways: Three; two north-south parallel runways, each 11,500 feet long, 150 feet wide, and separated by 6,700 feet, and an east-west runway that is 10,500 feet long and 150 feet wide.

Dulles Access Road: 16 miles; two dedicated lanes in each direction and a direct connection to Interstate 66 and the Capital Beltway.
