Who's benefitting from Fairfax County's 'retirement option' program

Under Fairfax County's Deferred Retirement Option Program (DROP) employees can retire but continue working and collecting their salaries. Retirement benefits are placed in an account with a guaranteed annual earning.

Here are job titles for the Fairfax County employees who went through DROP and returned to work for all or part of 2011. Fairfax County provided the following information at The Washington Post's request through the Virginia Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). The county declined to provide more specific information on earnings, hours, DROP lump sums or retirement benefit amounts. Note: Employees' names are not included in this chart. Full details can be obtained from Fairfax County government offices under FOIA.

To calculate the possible earnings for a job title, you must consult the status code of an employee's job title (see footnotes), determine the amount of hours that status code includes, and multiply that times an employee's hourly rate of pay. The maximum an employee can earn is capped at 115 percent of a deputy county executive's pay, or $198,941 a year.

Status T - Exempt-temporary: positions with scheduled hours not to exceed 900 per calendar year. These positions are typically considered seasonal, such as election workers, summer lifeguards, and leaf collectors. Status T employees are not eligible to receive benefits.
Status B - Exempt-benefits-eligible: positions with scheduled hours between 1,040 and 1,560 per calendar year. Status B employees are eligible to receive limited health care benefits only, including county health, vision and dental insurance.
Status E - Exempt appointed: positions held primarily by department directors or other senior staff. Status E employees are eligible to work full time and are eligible for all benefits.
