Eugene Dewitt Kinlow (I)

Residence: Bellevue.

Education: University of Pittsburgh, 1979-81; BS, business administration, University of the District of Columbia, 1987.

Occupation: Consultant.

Extra-curricular activities: President, Far Southwest Civic Association; trustee, University of the District of Columbia; vice chair, Consumer Utility Board; commissioner, D.C. Commission for National and Community Service; former trustee, Committee of 100 on the Federal City.

Something voters should know about you: "As a native Washingtonian, I believe that short-term investments in building community capacity for residents will yield greater positive outcomes for long-term neighborhood sustainability."

Why should voters elect you? "Voters should elect me because I have a proven track record and success in 'making every neighborhood great'. I am a coalition builder who has successfully fought for adequate funding for our public schools, better community policing, a healthy environment, greater citizen access to goods and services, better marketing of D.C.'s forgotten communities, community self-determination, workers' rights and investment in people and communities. My vision is to rebuild our city with old-fashioned values by making every neighborhood safe, attractive and affordable for our seniors and providing greater access to shopping, recreation and entertainment for our diverse population."

Orange Sr.; conducted 2000 Social Awareness Forum at the University of Maryland and 2002 Youth Political Seminar for National Congress of Black Women; organized 2002 Together Healing Under God Life Walk on Washington; held over 500 street political meetings, educating more than 2,000 youths about democracy while registering over 1,300 people to vote, summer 2002.

Something voters should know about you: "I was incarcerated for two years, bartended in Georgetown, studied in South Africa and I am victim of misplaced values that plague many urban youth."

Why should voters elect you? "Leadership. I will provide leadership that is needed to lighten the financial burden of our government, increase educational standards and ensure revitalization that will benefit all District residents. Leadership is absent in our city, thereby allowing rappers, music videos, basketball players and pop culture to have more influence than our elected officials and the democratic government that is designed to provide life, liberty and justice. I will truly represent the diverse communities I serve by mobilizing our youth and incorporating progressive and innovative legislation. Change equals a new approach."

Kweku Toure (I)

Age: 36

Why should voters elect you? "I have demonstrated throughout my work history with the District and federal governments on a micro level the capacity of creating resources for residents. I have utilized these resources to enhance residents' lives in various areas, i.e., crisis counseling, employment, providing critical information on how to get shelter, providing youth enrichment programs, and small business development, to name a few. I am convinced that as a councilman, I can enhance the lives of residents on a macro level due my to in-depth knowledge of the city's agencies and address where the critical gaps exist."

Something voters should know about you: "Over 19 years of combined public service for the District of Columbia (corrections and police departments). Former U.S. Army lieutenant. Twelve years active military duty."

Why should voters elect you? "Because government is too important to be left to the lawyers and professional politicians. In these troubled times, we need more people in politics who have raised a family, paid their taxes and shuffled down the streets looking for a job. I seek the council office for a single purpose–to built a better city. It is that simple and that big! I would work for jobs in the private sector to get our economy moving and for strong family and community values. This election is about the beliefs we share, the values we honor, the principles we hold dear."

Something voters should know about you: "My wife, Connie, and I adopted our daughter, Adelaide, two years ago; she was one day old. We plan to educate her in public schools."

Why should voters elect you? "Because I share your values for a better city. I don't just talk issues; I have a record. Affordable housing: I introduced the law that caps real property tax increases, led the fight (with AARP) against predatory lenders and have consistently voted funds to help low-income residents. Schools: I visit them and then demand improvements. It's my amendment that will set aside and protect $500 million for local schools next year. Neighborhoods: As a former ANC commissioner, I know quality-of-life issues. I listen to residents, and we work together for strong neighborhoods across the city."

Why should voters elect you? "I am extremely hopeful about the future of our city. Over the past few years, we have made a lot of progress in helping the District become a better place to live and work. Since joining the council in 1997, I have worked hard to find practical solutions to our long-standing challenges. Among other matters, my initiatives have resulted in greater tax parity with surrounding jurisdictions, improved access to substance abuse treatment, expanded public transportation services, elevated the focus on women's health, assisted the growth of technology companies, provided meaningful adoption incentives and encouraged greater home ownership."
