Council Ward 3

Kathy Patterson (D)

Age: 54

Residence: Chevy Chase.

Education: BS, Northwestern University-Medill School of Journalism; graduate studies, University of York, York, England; MA, Georgetown University.

Occupation: D.C. Council member, Ward 3.

Extra-curricular activities: D.C. Council, 1995-present; executive committee, Coalition for America's Children, 1993-94; founder and member, Ad Hoc Parents Coalition; manager and coach, Capital City Little League; parent associations of Murch Elementary, Deal Junior High and Maret schools.

Something voters should know about you: "As little league coach or soccer mom, I'm an effective legislator because I am rooted in, and informed by, my neighborhood and my community."

Why should voters elect you? "In 1994, the District had a shrinking tax base, a $722 million deficit and leadership unable to address the crisis. I ran for council as a public school advocate, offering common sense on fiscal reforms. I began my first term by proposing a five-year financial plan, including budget cuts, and have made the difficult calls every year since. Today, we've had five years of balanced budgets. To continue that progress requires a council willing to exercise budget discipline and to demand effective services, including improved schools. I will continue to be an independent voice for fair and efficient District government."

Eric Rojo (R)

Age: 57

Residence: American University Park.

Education: BA, political science (international affairs), University of Maine, 1983; diploma (business), Tecnologico de Monterrey, Mexico, 1996; U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, 1986; Inter-American Defense College, National Defense University, 1991.

Occupation: International business consultant.

Extra-curricular activities: Member, school board, Our Lady of Victory School; co-chair and founder, Marymount University Parents Association; member, board of directors, Latino Student Fund; president, Mid-Atlantic Chapter, U.S.-Mexico Chamber of Commerce; member, Reserve Officers Association, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Something voters should know about you: "Thirty years of experience in military, government and business, a strong background in preventive programs to eliminate waste and corruption in government purchasing and administration."

Why should voters elect you? "My experience allows me to bring a unique perspective and set of skills lacking in the council. My service at the departments of Defense and Energy on security and management will help to provide leadership in the council on our safety and security issues. My experience as a small-business owner and as a former COO will allow me to provide management and accountability leadership to the council. My work on government procurement reform and anti-corruption programs can point to many simple ways to identify waste and make significant improvements. My community service in education is also important."
