Education: Diploma, comparative legal studies, Cambridge University; MA, public administration, Harvard University; JD, Cornell University School of Law; AB, international relations, Dartmouth College.

Occupation: Lawyer in private practice.

Elected offices/civic activities: Member, Alexandria School Board, 2003-present; member, Alexandria Gang Prevention Task Force; former board liaison, Alexandria School Board Substance Abuse and Violence Prevention Education Advisory Committee; general counsel, George Washington Masonic National Memorial Association; former member, Alexandria Waterfront Committee, City of Alexandria Park and Recreation Commission; former president, Alexandria Sportsman's Club; former vice commander, Virginia Disabled Veterans; former chairman, Alexandria YMCA, Alexandria Cancer Society, Alexandria Crime Solvers, George Washington Birthday Celebration.

What do you think is the most urgent problem facing your jurisdiction? "City Council has a spending addiction that leads to spiraling tax increases — 100 percent over the last five years. The city manager has identified flagrant 'budget drivers,' yet the council has not begun to reduce the fat, much less reform the budget. No cuts are necessary. Reducing annual budget growth from 12 percent or more to a more sustainable 4.5 to 5 percent level will fully fund all services and relieve the spiraling tax burden. Senior citizens, low-income and middle-class families are being squeezed out of Alexandria. This is not my vision for a welcoming and caring community."

Why should voters elect you? "One-party monopoly government is unhealthy. As an elected school board member, I have proven myself as the balanced, reasonable alternative voice that our community needs."
