Elected offices/civic activities: Mayor, City of Alexandria, 2003-present; vice mayor, 1997-2000; member, City Council, 1994-2003; former chairman, Northern Virginia Urban League; member, Alexandria School Board, 1974-84, YMCA of Alexandria, NAACP, Alexandria Boys & Girls Club, League of Women Voters, Alexandria Symphony Orchestra, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority Board of Directors and Northern Virginia Transportation Commission.

What do you think is the most urgent problem facing your jurisdiction? "While we have many challenges facing us as a growing city, such as traffic congestion, taxes and development, the lack of affordable/ workforce housing is most critical in order for us to maintain our diversity and our middle class. We need to allow for more density/height around our Metro stations to address this growing need."

Why should voters elect you? "As a lifetime resident, I have been involved in our community for many years providing proven leadership and experience in solving our many problems."
