Yvonne A. Folkerts

Candidate for School Board District B

Age: 46

Residence: Seminary Ridge.

Education: BA, journalism, Eastern Illinois University.

Occupation: Currently a stay-at-home parent; previously worked 18 years in public relations and news reporting.

Elected offices/civic activities: Past president, MacArthur Elementary School PTA; classroom volunteer and tutor at MacArthur; Girl Scout leader; member and former board member, the Twig, the junior auxiliary of Inova Alexandria Hospital; member, Westminster Presbyterian Church and Seminary Ridge Civic Association.

What do you think is the most urgent problem facing your jurisdiction? "I believe the most urgent problem facing Alexandria public schools is a need to strengthen the curriculum at all levels. I believe it's time to take a closer look inside our classrooms, because academic excellence for every child must be the primary focus of our public schools. I would pursue a top-to-bottom review and refinement of the curriculum to strengthen its effectiveness and prepare every student to move smoothly from elementary school, to middle school, to high school and beyond, whether that be a vocational trade, community college or university."

Why should voters elect you? "Voters should elect me to the school board because I would bring a fresh perspective and new leadership, particularly that of elementary school parents."
