Capt. DeConto, 44, was organizing the Navy's response to the World Trade Center attack when he died in the crash at the Pentagon. A native of Cape Cod and a graduate of the Naval Academy, DeConto was divorced and was close to his mother, two brothers and two sisters.

Scott, 46, was an Army budget analyst at the Pentagon. She lived with her husband and two children in Springfield, and she was particularly interested in her family history. This summer, she drove around the South for a week, tracing her ancestral roots.

Howell, 26, was a student body president and an Eagle Scout in his native Idaho. With a strong love for government, he came to Washington in January to be a presidential management intern doing intelligence work for the chief of naval operations at the Pentagon.
