Trash is collected once a week. The city is divided into four sections, with pickup scheduled Tuesdays-Fridays (see map on Web site). Residents are required to provide an approved watertight container of five- to 30-gallon capacity. Curbside collection of recyclable items is done the same day as trash collection. Recyclables should be placed in the green recycling bins provided by the city. Paper and cardboard items should be bundled and placed next to the green bin. Trash and recycling should be placed at the curb by 7 a.m. on the day of collection.

Dogs at least 4 months old must be licensed each year. Licenses go on sale in November for the coming year and can be purchased by mail or in person at the animal shelter and the Department of Tax Administration. Fees are $10 for a fertile dog and $5 for a spayed or neutered dog. A current rabies vaccination certificate must be shown. For more information, call 703-222-8234.

Cats are required to be vaccinated against rabies.

To retrieve impounded pets, visit the shelter 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesdays-Fridays or 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturdays. Stray animals are held at the shelter for seven days before adoption or euthanasia or for 11 days if the animal has a collar, tag, tattoo or other form of identification.

To adopt an animal, visit the shelter 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesdays-Fridays and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturdays.

Hours for animal adoption are 7 a.m.-5 p.m. Mondays-Saturdays. The shelter is closed on holidays.

Dogs 4 months old and older must be licensed each year. Dog licenses are due by Jan. 31 each year; the cost is $5 for a spayed or neutered dog and $10 for a fertile dog. Owners must present rabies vaccination certification and, if applicable, proof that dogs have been altered. For more information, call 703-385-7900. The number of dogs allowed at a residence is based on lot size. One or two dogs can be licensed regardless of lot size. Cats must be vaccinated against rabies.

To retrieve an impounded pet, owners should first contact the police department, 703-385-7924. There is a $15 pickup fee for each animal and a boarding fee of $10 a day.

Cats and wild animals are picked up only if they are thought to be injured or a threat to humans or domestic animals.

Dogs are held for seven to 12 days, after which they are made available for
adoption or euthanized, depending on space at the hospital.

Local Transit

Fairfax Area Park-and-Ride Lots

The county's park-and-ride lots come in various sizes. Some offer a few spaces, while others have thousands. Some are private, and others are owned by the Virginia Department of Transportation or Metro. Some are free; others have fees. Lots may be served by buses or by rail. Fairfax Area Bus Service

Fairfax City CUE. These buses operate daily within Fairfax City and to and from the Vienna Metro station and the George Mason University campus. Routes vary. Basic fare is 75 cents, but GMU students, faculty and staff members with ID, and children 3 and younger ride free. Fare is 25 cents between Franconia-Springfield Station and the Hilton, and free between Franconia-Springfield Station and Metro Park.
