Occupation: Sheriff, Arlington County Elected offices/civic activities National Sheriffs Association; American Correctional Association; Rock Spring Civic Association; Jamestown PTA; Arlington Chamber of Commerce. Family: Joel Lovelace, husband; two sons. Why should the voters elect you? "In July, I became Arlington sheriff after being unanimously appointed by Arlington's Circuit Court judges. For the past 12 years, I have served as the Sheriff's Office director of administration, where I played a key role in every aspect of the department, from hiring and training our professional staff to managing our multimillion-dollar budget. I am the only candidate with the experience to perform all the duties of the sheriff: maintaining a safe detention facility; providing inmates with necessary educational, job-training and counseling programs; ensuring the safety of Arlington's nine courtrooms and serving as the department's chief executive." Age: 62. Residence: Arlington Forest. Education: BS, political science, and a teacher's certificate to teach high school social studies, Appalachian State University; home graduate work in public administration, University of Virginia and American University. Occupation: Security officer, CIA. Elected offices/civic activities: Arlington Forest Civic Association. Family: Sharon H. Baber, wife; three adult children. Why should the voters elect you? "I have the most professional law enforcement and management experience of all candidates in the race. This experience is the basis of my vision for the sheriff's office. That vision is of a sheriff that is far more active in serving Arlington. In addition to protecting the operations of the jail and supporting the court system, I believe a sheriff should serve the community. How? By a program of outreach I call "Community Sheriffing." Elements of that program include a prison ministries program for at-risk youth, an enhanced seniors program, and a Street Smarts program for both men and women." Tell us what you think is the most urgent problem facing Arlington. "The lack of experienced professional law enforcement leaders in the sheriff's office, professionals who can lead deputies by example, and the need for an activist sheriff." Why should the voters elect you? "I am the only candidate for sheriff who has been trained in both Corrections and Law Enforcement. I am the only one who has experience working in many sworn positions within the sheriff's office, such as corrections, transportation, warrant process, investigations and court security. I am the only candidate with a degree in a criminal justice field. I was the first deputy sheriff to escort inmates into the streets of Arlington to start a work program. I have earned my badge and weapon. This is a position whereby one must lead by example and experience. I have set that example and truly have the experience." Tell us what you think is the most urgent problem facing Arlington. "Insufficient amount of affordable housing for low-income families." E-mail address: eandllowe@aol.com
