  • Ronald V. Crickenberger (I)

    Age: 45.

    Residence: City of Falls Church.

Education: Graduate, Walker High School, Atlanta.

Occupation: National political director, Libertarian Party.

Elected offices/civic activities: Campaign manager, Toby Nixon, state representative candidate, Georgia, 1990; campaign manager, Bruce Van Buren, Avondale Estates City Commission, Georgia, 1995; coordinated Libertarian Party's 50-state ballot access drive, 2000; recruited and got on the ballot 255 Libertarian candidates for U.S. House of Representatives in 2000; CEO, Pool Protector, pool services.

Family: Noelle Stettner, partner; a son and a daughter.

Why should the voters elect you? "I can take the oath of office and keep it. I promise to never, ever vote for any tax increase; to always vote to reduce your tax burden; to always vote to respect your rights, privacy and personal decision; to never vote to make any action a crime that does not directly violate the rights of another; and to always vote to defend America, but never to send our soldiers to die fighting someone else's age-old war."

Tell us what you think is the most urgent problem facing Virginians: "The high cost of taxes, the damage to society of the war on drugs and needless HOV restrictions."

    Richard Lee 'Rick' Herron (I)

    Age: 51.

Elected offices/civic activities: Member, RAIL Now!, Greens Steering Committee; member, Virginia Greens; member, Green Party, USA.

Family: Victoria Herron, spouse; one child, age 13.

Why should the voters elect you? "We need 'More Trains, Less Traffic.' Light rail from Springfield to Tysons. Rail to Dulles. Rail from Pentagon to Baileys Crossroads to Tysons. Rail on the Woodrow Wilson Bridge. Potomac Yard Metro stop. More Virginia Rail Express lines. Lengthen Metrorail to Potomac Mills. High speed rail to Richmond. Protect our natural resources, protect our world ecosystem and reduce damage to the environment. Term limits pledge, six years max. Will donate half of salary to charity. Nonviolence advocate. Fiscal conservative. Cut wasteful defense. Pay down the national debt."

Tell us what you think is the most urgent problem facing Virginians: "To reduce traffic congestion in Northern Virginia we need to build light rail. The community wants and needs it, but instead more roads are built."

    Demaris H. Miller (R)

    Age: 57.

    Residence: Langley (McLean).

Education: PhD, psychology, George Mason University; BS, education, University of Georgia; BS, nursing, George Mason University.

Why should the voters elect you? "I am not a professional politician. I understand the challenges today's families face because I have been there as a public school teacher, a federal employee and a nurse caring for hospitalized infants by night and my own children by day. I will work effectively as a citizen legislator to make a better world for my grandchildren and future generations. I envision a nation where individual freedom and personal responsibility are paramount, national defense is strong, affordable health care is accessible to all, no child is left behind in a failing school, and Social Security is truly secure."

Tell us what you think is the most urgent problem facing Virginians: "Our challenge is to balance improving our quality of life with continuing economic prosperity that includes rapid growth in people, traffic and technology."

James P. Moran Jr. (D) *incumbent

    Age: 55.

    Residence: Arlington.

Education: Masters in public administration, University of Pittsburgh; BA, economics, Holy Cross.

    Occupation: U.S. House of Representatives.

Elected offices/civic activities: Mayor of Alexandria, 1985-90; vice mayor and council member, 1979-84; chairman, Northern Virginia Transportation Commission; chairman, United Way.

Family: Separated; two daughters and two sons.

Why should the voters elect you? "The key issue is which candidate will contribute the most to sustaining our strong economy and quality of life. We have an unprecedented opportunity to eliminate our $4‚trillion debt while adequately providing for the retirement and health care needs of the 'baby boom' generation and making needed investments in education, transportation and carefully targeted tax cuts. Unlike my opponent, I am for responsible gun control, women's reproductive rights and campaign finance reform. I am against private school vouchers. With a world-class education system, technology training, research and development and open trade, Northern Virginia can realize its full potential."

Tell us what you think is the most urgent problem facing Virginians: "Transportation: I have helped secure funding for the Wilson Bridge, Metrorail and other vital highway projects in Northern Virginia as well as additional transit vouchers for federal workers."
