 Kites on the Mall Saturday, March 23, 2002 Hundreds of spectators and participants were on hand for the 36th Annual Smithsonian Kite Festival, held near the base of the Washington Monument on the National Mall. The theme of this year's contest, "Let Freedom Fly," was reflected in the many star-spangled kites, which included the 17-foot-tall pyramidal kite featured in this video.
