Recovered Video Fragment Shows Crew During Reentry
Friday, February 28, 2003
This NASA audio and video shows Columbia astronauts' activities on the
flight deck during the shuttle's Feb. 1 reentry. The crew is shown making
entry preparations -- donning gloves, checking suit pressure and integrity
and documenting what NASA describes as normal reentry flashes and plasma
effects observed outside the windows.
The 13-minute video documents the crew after the de-orbit burn, 500,000
miles above the South Pacific, and ends when the shuttle was 250,000 feet
above the eastern Pacific, southwest of San Francisco. The video concludes
11 minutes prior to the loss of communications between Columbia and Mission
Control. It was recovered Feb. 6 near Palestine, Tex.
