Building the Pentagon Memorial

Efforts are underway to create a Pentagon memorial for the victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. At the future site of the memorial park, architects Julie Beckman, 30, and Keith Kasemen, 31, discuss their competition-winning design with washingtonpost.com reporter Christina Pino-Marina just two days before the second anniversary of the attacks.
Known as "Light Benches," the design includes 184 curved benches - one to honor each person that was killed when terrorist hijackers crashed American Airlines Flight 77 into the west fašade of the Pentagon. Victims' names will be engraved on the benches. Sunlight and artificial light will create reflections on pools of purified water and the aluminum undersides of each bench. The rows of benches will be surrounded by maple trees and sequenced by year of birth.
The Pentagon Memorial Foundation is trying to raise a total of $20 Million to build and maintain the memorial. Fundraising efforts have raised $310,000 so far.
