Deployment of the
USS Theodore Roosevelt
Wednesday, September 19, 2001
At Naval Station Norfolk, 15,000
sailors and marines began a six
month deployment with the USS
Theodore Roosevelt Carrier
Battle Group. Wednesday's
deployment was scheduled, but
Navy officials said it was anything
but routine after last week's
terrorist attacks in New York City
and Washington, DC. About
5,500 Navy personnel were
aboard the USS Theodore
Roosevelt. Many said tearful
goodbyes before heading out to
sea.
The Navy requested that last names of sailors and their families be withheld.
Interviews with:
Jay, a Naval intelligence specialist from Florida
Rear Admiral Mark Fitzgerald
Secretary of the Navy, Gordon England
Marie is a Navy electronics technician from Portsmouth, VA
Crystal from Chesapeake, VA
Jackie from Bensalem, PA
