Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004;

Washington Post Culture Critic Philip Kennicott toured Iowa during the final days before the Democratic caucuses.

Iowans who participate in the quadrennial rite are eagerly possessive of its traditions. But winning the caucuses isn't necessarily about shaking hands on Main Street.

It's a long, cold, slog through a state where politics is more about persuasion than pretty pictures.
