On Camera: South Carolina Voter Voices

Saturday, February 19, 2000

Primary voters at a Charleston polling place Saturday were well-steeped in the Republican candidates' positions after weeks of intensive campaigning by George W. Bush and John McCain in South Carolina. Among those who spoke to OnPolitics editor Mark Stencel and staff photographer Craig Cola were:

Jon and Amy Austen, two Republican voters who backed Arizona Sen. John McCain.

Nike Kern, a writer who cast her vote for Texas Gov. George W. Bush because she says he has the best chance of winning in the fall.

John Michele, a college professor who voted for Alan Keyes.

Leda and Edward Jackson, who backed John McCain in part because of his position on taxes and the budget.

Dennis and Beth Fleming, two Bush backers who rode to the polls on their Harley Davidson. Beth made up her mind to vote for the governor at the last moment.
